The Texas Business Honors Program (BHP) is a prestigious and selective program, offering a curriculum modeled after case-based MBA programs. It challenges students to think outside of the box. Small class sizes of 35 to 45 students allow for increased focus on discussion, presentation, group collaboration and analytic exercises. BHP is more than just a top-rate education--it’s a community. Special programming coordinated by the BHP and the Honors Business Association (HBA) provide opportunities for students from all graduating classes to form strong, lasting relationships with one another.

THE BUSINESS HONORS MAJOR gives students a

solid foundation in all business disciplines. It can be easily combined with other majors in the business school, or outside of the business school, while still allowing a student to graduate in four years.

Students who choose to pursue a second business major within McCombs will be able to choose from top-ranked academic programs, allowing them to combine their business honors education with the specialization of their choice.

STARTS DAY 1.

The relationships and resources students create and discover as a freshman will shape their four years at college, which is why BHP offers an array of support for freshmen. The freshman experience begins with the BHP Leadership Kickoff, where students will establish strong relationships with their BHP cohort and Peer Mentors during a twoday retreat in the Texas Hill Country. The Peer Mentors help freshmen develop strategies for academic and social success and encourage their mentees to find their niche and follow their passion. Throughout the year, students will continue to build relationships with their cohorts and the program through classes, unique programming and individualized advising sessions.

WE’RE HERE We have dedicated academic and career counselors, as well as a number of programs in place to provide our students with the personal attention they need. You will not have to figure it all out on your own. Your advisors will help you maximize your education through strategic academic planning, allowing you to focus on your college and career goals. Specialized career resources and individualized career coaching will help you gain the skills you need to land your ideal job.

Our students graduated at the top of their high school class, were leaders in their school and have a strong interest in business. BETHANY ROLAN

’17

Senior Bethany Rolan is serving as President for The University of Texas at Austin Orange Jackets this year. Orange Jackets is the oldest, and one of the most prestigious women’s service organizations on campus, and its members serve as the official hosts for the university. The organization has allowed her to meet women from across campus who are driven and supportive, much like her BHP peers.

Bethany relishes the BHP community and feels she has learned so much from her classmates, who have a wide variety of interests and are extremely supportive of one another. That sense of community and collaboration is something she felt when she attended Discover BHP, the program’s event for admitted students, as a senior in high school. She meshed with the students she met there and loved that she could have the experience of being at a large school, while having the classroom experience of a small school through the program. Bethany is triple majoring in BHP, Economics, and Supply Chain. The Economics program at UT is housed in the College of Liberal Arts, so she has been able to take several classes through that school that she believes have made her a well-rounded student. During her time here, Bethany has held three on-campus positions, working for the BHP office as a peer advisor, serving as a research assistant for one of her professors, and as a teaching assistant for the Business Communications course.

She appreciates being able to be involved in the university in so many capacities. She interned with McKinsey & Company and hopes to continue on as a consultant after graduation.

Class discussions around real-world business cases allow professors to teach the complexities of business, and allow students to learn how to think through any problem. This method of teaching allows students to gain the analytical skills to make an informed decision in any situation. It also allows students to be more mature in their professional perspective and ready to tackle any problem that comes their way in their careers.

KELLY MERRYMAN

’98

Before joining YouTube in 2015, Kelly was VP of Content Acquisition for Netflix for seven years. Coming out of BHP, she was interested in management consulting, so she accepted a position with Bain in their Dallas office and worked as a consultant in a variety of industries. She then moved into private equity, joining Audax Group. Kelly left Audax to pursue an MBA at Harvard. During that time, she became interested in the entertainment industry and the introduction of digital distribution to that industry.

After graduating, she pursued that interest and took a job with Sony Picture in Los Angeles, where she spent three years in their business and corporate development groups, before being recruited to Netflix.

Looking back on her time in the BHP, Kelly says the case method taught in small classrooms was very effective and taught her that solutions to complex business problems generally span multiple functional areas. She also greatly values the network she built through BHP.

BEING A LONGHORN means access to a wide range of activities. Whatever your interests may be, you will find a way to pursue them at UT and in Austin, one of the best cities in the world. BHP students are involved across campus and are able to explore their passions, selecting from more than 1,100 student organizations on campus. We offer a truly well-rounded and fun college experience with top sports and great school spirit!

All BHP students are automatically a member of the Honors Business Association (HBA), which hosts a number of events throughout the year, including company field trips, dinners with faculty and alumni, and philanthropic outings. There are also more than 40 McCombs student organizations for students to get involved in, from affinity groups, to major-specific groups, to business student legislation.

Austin also has great weather, fun events and many outdoors activities to choose from. Why choose to live anywhere else for the four years you will be in college?

The McCombs School has robust study abroad opportunities with partnerships in 25 countries. BHP students have the option to participate in a specially designed program in Buenos Aires, where they can earn credit for a BHP management course. Studying abroad allows students to earn credit for business courses, experience other cultures, build their resume to become more attractive to employers, and develop foreign language skills. All BHP students are strongly encouraged to study abroad at some point during their time in the program.

NEO ’ NANNA 17 Neo Nanna has never regretted his decision to come to UT or BHP, because he knew going into college that he wanted a challenging environment with honors-level coursework after participating in a McCombs summer camp for rising seniors. He appreciates the diversity of opinions and experiences of other students and feels grateful to his BHP classmates, who have been a great support system helping him navigate through the challenges of college. Although he is triple majoring in BHP, Finance, and Psychology, his passions lie in adolescent development and high school college-readiness. Neo spends his time outside of the classroom on various nonprofit initiatives, including serving as a Community Outreach Coordinator for Camp Kesem – UT, a summer camp for kids whose parents have cancer. He is proud of the money he has raised to send kids to camp and the difference he has made in their lives as a Camp Kesem Counselor. Neo interned with JPMorgan Chase, but hopes to go into social impact work after graduation with the eventual goal of working in education policy and management.

Director of Structured Products at BP Business Honors Class of 2003

DOMINIC SUNG

’03

Dominic graduated from the McCombs School of Business in May of 2003 as a Business Honors and Finance major with a minor in MIS. He was recruited by BP as one of the first participants in a rotational analyst program for its Integrated Supply and Trading business. In his 13-year career at BP, he has held a variety of roles, including physical gas optimization, credit risk, and product control. He is currently responsible for providing financial markets and tailored risk management solutions for energy customers in the Eastern United States, working with them to price and execute their risk management and hedging programs. The 2012 recipient of the McCombs School of Business BBA Rising Star Award, Dominic has been a UT BHP Advisory Board member since 2003, and has just stepped down as Chair. Beyond the strong academic education that the BHP provided him, there are two huge impacts of BHP on his life. The first is the ability to apply learned skills in order to adapt and succeed no matter the situation. The second is the network of hugely successful BHP graduates that he is lucky to call friends. In his attempt to give back to a school and program that he feels provided so much to him, Dominic has been a guest lecturer at McCombs, regularly interviews BHP applicants, and serves as an alumni mentor to current BHP students.

encourage you to apply! We are looking for students who have excelled academically and are leaders at their schools and in their communities. All applications are holistically reviewed by the BHP admissions committee, with special attention given to resumes, quantitative scores from standardized tests, transcripts, and the evaluation given by our alumni interviewers.

APPLICATION AND SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION BHP only accepts online applications through the Apply Texas Application. Students must list “Unspecified Business” as their first-choice major and select to apply to honors in order to be considered. Students who submit their application

by October 15 will receive their admission status earlier. They will be evaluated under the same criteria as students who apply by the regular deadline. Early application does not positively or negatively affect a student’s chances of admission.

BHP has a limited number of merit-based scholarships available for incoming freshmen. All applicants will be automatically considered for these scholarships. University-wide scholarships are awarded through the online ApplyTexas Application for Freshmen Scholarships. Visit www.TexasScholarships.org for more information. Even if you don’t think you will qualify for need-based aid, it’s a good idea to apply for all types of aid by completing the FAFSA. The Texas Exes also offers a number of scholarships, including the Forty Acres Scholarship, a full-ride scholarship for top incoming freshmen.
