Trail Alsace by UTMB - Runner & supporter guide 2026

Page 1

A UNIQUE JOURNEY THROUGH ALSACE

Held from 14 to 17 May, Trail Alsace by UTMB offers a unique journey through time, castles and vineyards. The routes take runners deep into the heart of Alsace, in the Grand Est Region and the Vosges mountains, exploring medieval strongholds and villages along trails that weave through landscapes that are both wild and beautifully preserved. Nestled in a lush natural setting, Alsace’s castles have stood the test of time and offer magnificent views over the Alsace plain, the Black Forest and, at times, even the Alps.

This unique event takes runners into the heart of a region as rich as it is beautiful. Whatever the race, all participants will enjoy some of the finest panoramas that Alsace and the Grand Est Region have to offer.

EDITORIAL

The Grand Est Region is proud to renew its commitment to the 4th edition of Trail Alsace by UTMB, which will take place from 14 to 17 May 2026. Over four days, the Grand Est Region, with its Vosges mountains, Alsatian villages and medieval castles, will once again provide an exceptional playground for trail-running enthusiasts.

With six race formats on the programme, ranging from 156km for the longest distance to 10.5km for the shortest, reserved for young trail runners, every participant will find a challenge to match their personal ambition and enjoy a unique experience of physical and mental achievement in the heart of Alsace’s forests and vineyards.

Beyond the physical challenge, taking part in a trail race is also a unique opportunity to discover a region, its landscapes, picturesque places and hidden, unspoilt viewpoints.

I would like to congratulate all participants embarking on this sporting adventure, as well as the organisers and volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make this fourth edition a success. Their dedication and commitment are remarkable, and it is thanks to them that Trail Alsace by UTMB continues to grow and shine throughout the Region.

On behalf of the Grand Est Region, I wish you all an excellent race and send you my warmest encouragement. May this day be marked by performance, conviviality and enjoyment.

Happy trails to you all!

As we approach this 4th edition in Alsace, I would like to thank all participants for their enthusiasm, which has once again exceeded our expectations this year. Your motivation is both an honour and a responsibility, and it challenges us to keep raising our standards in return for the trust you place in us. This event would not be possible without you, nor without the dedication of the more than 900 volunteers working alongside the organising team.

Together, with our partners and the local area, we have created a true community united by the spirit of going beyond limits, and we are incredibly proud of it. I genuinely cannot wait to share this event with you, bringing together sport, solidarity and celebration in the heart of such a unique region.

ISABELLE VISEUX-POLETTI

Dear Runners,

Running in Alsace is not simply about getting from start to finish. It means crossing a living region, shaped by its history, landscapes and the people who call it home. In 2026, Trail Alsace by UTMB invites you to enjoy an experience that is more committed, more open and more deeply rooted in its environment than ever before.

From the vineyards to the Vosges forests, every trail you run reflects a fragile balance. Respecting these spaces, limiting our impact, valuing local expertise and acting responsibly are integral to our vision. Here, trail running is experienced in harmony with nature, by listening to the terrain and respecting those who care for it all year round.

This 2026 edition also marks an important step forward: opening trail running to the next generation. With a dedicated format for 16–18-year-olds, we want to pass on the values that drive us — commitment, humility and solidarity — and give young trail runners the opportunity to discover this world in a setting that is both supportive and demanding. Because Trail Alsace by UTMB is, above all, a collective and inclusive adventure. From the first kilometres to the final effort, everyone has their place here: runners from all backgrounds, passionate volunteers, committed partners and local stakeholders united by a shared love of this region.

Whether you are chasing performance, discovery or shared experience, we hope this edition will leave a lasting impression on you. An emotion, a memory, a desire to come back.

We look forward to welcoming you on the trails of Alsace and, together, making the heart of trail running beat stronger than ever.

ENVIRONMENT

Trail Alsace by UTMB takes place in the heart of an exceptional natural environment. Renowned for its beautiful landscapes and rich biodiversity, Alsace is home to remarkable and sometimes fragile natural habitats.

The race organisation is committed to preserving these natural areas and to raising awareness among runners and supporters of the need to protect them. Trail running in these areas is only possible thanks to a balance between sport, nature and respect for the environment.

PRESERVING PROTECTED AREAS

The trails you will run pass through several remarkable natural sites in the Vosges: the Ballons des Vosges Regional Natural Park, Natura 2000 sites (the Fréland – Grand Brézouard – Aubure quiet zone; the Taennchel massif), and other protected or environmentally sensitive areas (the Lac Blanc and Lac Noir sector; the former Niedermunster Abbey).

THE EVENT’S ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT

The Trail Alsace by UTMB organisation works closely with local stakeholders to limit the event’s impact on the environment.

A number of measures have been put in place:

• Defining the routes in consultation with managers of natural areas and the relevant State authorities

• Adapting the courses to avoid the most sensitive sectors

• Implementing precise course marking and suitable signage

• Managing and sorting waste

• Raising awareness among participants and volunteers

These actions form part of a broader approach aimed at balancing outdoor sport, respect for local areas and the preservation of biodiversity.

ENVIRONMENTAL AMBASSADORS

During your stay, both in the village in Obernai and out on the trails, you will meet environmental ambassadors whose role it is to support and guide you in protecting the environment.

The environmental ambassadors have two main missions:

• Raising awareness among runners during bib collection

• Field actions: specific course marking, putting up signage and cleaning the trails

Beyond their direct role in keeping the trails clean, they also have the authority to issue penalties in the event of non-compliance with the rules.

Reminder: Deliberate littering by a competitor or a member of their support crew will result in a 1-hour penalty.

RESPONSIBLE TRAIL RUNNER CHARTER

By taking part in Trail Alsace by UTMB, I commit to respecting nature and the areas I run through.

• I stay on marked trails: to avoid erosion and protect natural habitats

• I respect wildlife: I keep noise to a minimum and do not leave the paths

• I leave no waste behind: I keep my packaging until I reach designated bins at aid stations or at the finish

• I respect local activities: farmers, foresters and residents are the lifeblood of these areas

• I limit my impact: I make use of the transport plan put in place by the organisation (for runners and supporters)

WASTE MANAGEMENT AND AID STATIONS

Runners, supporters, volunteers and organisers: everyone is encouraged to act as eco responsibly as possible.

OUR “ZERO PLASTIC” APPROACH:

With our BYOU system, no catering utensils are distributed during the event. Runners must bring what they need in order to eat (in addition to the cup included in the mandatory equipment), particularly if they wish to eat hot meals.

Our aid stations adhere to a “zero single-use plastic bottle policy”. We prioritise the water available to us as a resource, and produce our own cola and sparkling water directly on site.

Compared with the 2024 edition, this represents a saving of:

- 3,360 still water bottles

- 2,280 cola bottles

- 2,418 sparkling water bottles

WASTE MANAGEMENT:

Small rubbish bags are distributed at bib collection. These are to be used for soiled toilet paper and waste such as opened gels or cling film that has contained food.

We ask all runners to keep their waste with them between aid stations, including fruit peel. Dedicated bins are available at aid stations to ensure waste is sorted properly. The final bin is located around 100m after the aid station and is marked with a sign.

Runners are encouraged to use rechargeable batteries and, where this is not possible, to keep used batteries with them until they can dispose of them in the special containers available at aid stations or at the finish.

SOLIDARITY

Since the launch of the UTMB World Series — and particularly Trail Alsace by UTMB — we have sought to embed a strong spirit of solidarity at the heart of every event, in line with the core trail-running values of sharing and mutual support.

At the heart of the Vosges massif, this approach aims to support local initiatives and allow everyone to contribute, in their own way, to meaningful projects.

In addition to Charity Bibs, the UTMB CARES endowment fund supports several committed associations. When registering, you have the option to make a donation and take part in this collective effort.

For the 2026 edition, donations will be shared equally between three partner associations:

- L’Association des Châteaux Forts d’Alsace - ELA - Le Club Vosgien

Every contribution, whatever the amount, helps support their work and strengthens the positive impact of the event.

WOMEN IN TRAIL

To strengthen equity in trail running, UTMB World Series is introducing tailored measures to ensure its races meet women’s specific needs, enhancing both participation and the overall experience.

In line with this commitment, the Trail Alsace by UTMB organisation is introducing the following measures across the event:

• Menstrual products and personal hygiene items available at all aid stations

• Separate and adapted facilities, including separate toilets and changing rooms for men and women, to provide a respectful and comfortable experience

• The presence of a dedicated female point of contact within the organisation

• A WhatsApp discussion space allowing women to exchange freely

Welcoming a child is a unique moment in an athlete’s life, and the support provided should reflect the diversity of their journeys, whether elite or amateur. Following the introduction of a pioneering pregnancy policy in 2023, UTMB World Series is strengthening its commitment to inclusion by further developing its parental support framework.

Developed in collaboration with the Pro Trail Runners Association (PTRA), this approach addresses the specific needs of elite athletes while applying to all runners across the UTMB World Series circuit.

FINDING YOUR WAY AROUND LAC BLANC

At Lac Blanc, the mountains are yours to discover and experience, whatever the season.

Along the trails, the landscape opens up to breathtaking views over the Vosges summits, deep forests and high-altitude pastures. A setting that evolves throughout the year, inviting you to slow down and take it all in.

In winter, the resort becomes a playground for snow sports and adventure: alpine skiing and snowboarding on the slopes or in the freestyle area, Nordic skiing through forest trails, sledging, snowshoe walks through pristine landscapes, or the thrill of the alpine coaster.

When the mountains turn green, summer reveals a whole new terrain to explore. Hiking, cross-country and downhill mountain biking in the Grand Est’s third Bike Park, the alpine coaster, treetop adventure courses, a barefoot trail, paintball and a wide range of activities for children offer something for everyone to enjoy with family or friends.

Our tip: for an unforgettable experience, set out early on the GR5 overlooking Lac Blanc to watch the sunrise. As the first light illuminates the ridgelines and reflects on the lake, the scene is simply magical.

SUPPORTERS

A FEW USEFUL DETAILS FOR YOUR SUPPORT CREW:

Aid stations where assistance is authorised:

You may wait here for your runner in order to assist them (equipment, food, etc.) and spend some time with them.

PLEASE NOTE:

Only supporters with a support crew ticket will be allowed entry to authorised aid stations. In the event of high attendance, checks may be carried out. The support crew ticket will be provided at the same time as the bib during bib collection.

Supporters without a support crew ticket may still go to the aid station, but will not be granted access to the assistance zone.

Self-sufficient aid stations (no assistance allowed):

These aid stations are passage points for your runner, where they will find hydration and food, among other things, but they will not be allowed to receive outside assistance.

At these points, you will not find facilities for your own comfort (shelter, heated area, catering or similar), but that should not stop you from coming to cheer on your runner!

PLEASE NOTE:

two aid stations on the 50K and 20K (Trail des Pèlerins) routes are closed to support crews and spectators:

Mont Sainte-Odile – 50K / 20K Ottrott Village – 20K Trail des Pèlerins

For your safety and the smooth running of the race, please do not attempt to go there.

EQUIPMENT

ÉQUIPEMENT

A FEW COMMON-SENSE REMINDERS FOR COPING WITH DIFFICULT WEATHER:

MANDATORY PERSONAL INSURANCE

ASSURANCE INDIVIDUELLE OBLIGATOIRE

To start your race with peace of mind, please remember that you must hold individual accident insurance covering potential search and evacuation costs in France. Every year, runners are caught out through lack of preparation. This type of insurance can be taken out with the provider of your choice.

Since 2022, UTMB Group has offered its own repatriation insurance, available via this link

- Prepare for both cold conditions and extreme heat

- Do not wait until you are shivering before putting on extra layers

- Do not get changed exposed to wind: anticipate or wait until you have shelter

- Protect yourself from the sun

POLES: take care when using your poles, especially in the first part of the race when the field is crowded. Do not put your hands through the straps on descents: in the event of a sudden fall, they can prevent you from catching yourself properly with your hands, increasing the risk of injury to the shoulders, wrists, forearms or head.

FOOD & HYDRATION

ALIMENTATION & HYDRATATION

Hydration and energy intake must be adapted to the weather conditions and should include salt throughout the effort. Maintain a good balance between slow-release and fast-release sugars.

FATIGUE AND ALERTNESS

FATIGUE ET VIGILANCE

Rest areas are available at aid stations, allowing you to stop, rest or take a short nap. It is dangerous to isolate yourself alone in the countryside to sleep. Fatigue and reduced alertness can lead to accidents.

Run within your limits, particularly in the early stages of the race, so that you retain enough energy to manage challenging situations, such as sudden changes in weather.

MANDATORY EQUIPMENT

Choosing suitable equipment is a key factor in the success of your race. Remember to test your gear before the event to avoid any surprises or discomfort.

WHY IS MANDATORY EQUIPMENT REQUIRED ?

In May in Alsace Grand Est, conditions can be very hot (over 30°C) or very cold, with rain or even hail. Your equipment must allow you to cope with all types of conditions and, depending on your pace, spend one or two nights on the course. In the event of an incident, your equipment must also allow you to wait for assistance in sufficiently safe conditions.

You must carry the mandatory equipment with you at all times, otherwise you risk a penalty. Checks are carried out during the races, immediately before the start and right through to the finish.

It is important to note that the equipment required by the organiser is a minimum safety requirement, which each trail runner must adapt according to their own abilities. We strongly advise you to test it during training outings in a variety of conditions and to carry anything that may be useful or necessary for you.

https://alsace.utmb.world/en/ races-runners/runners/equipmentadvices

Additional kits required depending on weather conditions

The “heatwave” and “bad weather” kits are an integral part of the mandatory equipment. Depending on conditions, the organiser may require one of these kits and will inform participants before bib collection opens for their race. To collect their bib, each participant must present their mandatory equipment, including the additional kit if required by the organiser.

Choose clothing that provides effective protection in the mountains against cold, wind and snow, ensuring both safety and performance. All clothing must be correctly sized and unaltered from its original condition.

This equipment must be carried in a bag that will be checked and tagged at bib collection and may not be exchanged during the race.
