EDITORIAL

Welcome to HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB®!!

Fifth edition of this great adventure and...

Who would have thought it?

What started with a simple phone call is becoming something much more relevant than a sporting event.

HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® is the story of thousands of lives, each with their own dream. It is the courage to accept challenges, and to fight to achieve them. It is about the importance of having illusions, of setting goals, and of striving to achieve them. Regardless of the effort and sacrifice involved.

HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® is an experience that ‘generates memories’, and unforgettable moments. Those that we shared with our loved ones, adding that it was not easy, but that it was worth it. That, in a place in the Pyrenees, in the middle of the mountains, thousands of people came together for a week to share a passion, or a madness, surrounded by landscapes that we would not have been able to imagine even in our best dreams, the Val d’Aran.

Because HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® is much more than a competition. It is friendship, companionship, enthusiasm, joy, effort, sacrifice, emotion, struggle, dreams and, above all, passion. Sharing the values that this marvellous sport instils in us every day.

It is to make friends and strengthen the bonds we already have. Because we love to share the good times, but it is in adversity where we unite much more.

In HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® we create a family. The one that every year we come together to enjoy and share this beautiful madness that we love so much and that moves us so much

VAL D’ARAN, A NATURAL PARADISE

If there is one thing that defines the Val d’Aran, it is its ability to leave a lasting impression on those who visit. Most people who discover this incredible valley end up returning.

With peaks soaring over 3,000 metres, crystal-clear lakes, breathtaking waterfalls, the sources of the Garona and Noguera Pallaresa rivers, forests, footpaths, and a total area of 633.46 km², the Val d’Aran is the only Atlantic-facing valley in the Catalan Pyrenees. A truly unique place, and a perfect setting for enjoying a wide variety of outdoor activities.

Its rich artistic, cultural, and culinary heritage also makes it an increasingly sought-after destination. Its villages, with their calm stone facades and slate roofs, seem to sleep in another era. Romanesque churches stand watch in silence, and each cobbled street holds the memory of generations who have lived in harmony with this landscape, with respect and devotion. Traditions here are not put on show, they are lived, whispered in Aranese, and celebrated unhurriedly.

Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2024 in recognition of its exemplary environmental, territorial and socio-economic development practices, the Val d’Aran boasts an extraordinary variety of climates and ecosystems.

In the Val d’Aran, life flows to the rhythm of nature. Forests glow golden in autumn, peaks are cloaked in snow in winter, and in summer, the meadows burst into bloom as if time itself paused to admire them. It is a living valley, breathing and singing in the language of the wind and water.

Its fairytale woodlands, soulful villages, deep-rooted traditions, and its singular way of looking to the future without losing sight of the past, make this a place to which one always wishes to return. of its quiet and profound beauty, remains with us forever.

The Val d’Aran cannot be forgotten, because it is a corner to be discovered with the soul.

At HOKA Val d'Aran by UTMB® we are committed to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. Therefore, in 2023 we designed a public transportation plan to facilitate travel throughout the Val d'Aran. Thanks to this public transportation plan, we significantly reduced the event's carbon footprint in 2024. With 110 buses in operation, we avoided the use of up to 2,400 cars, transporting 8,800 people, including runners and their companions. This joint effort allowed us to reduce 4.90 tons of CO₂ equivalent, demonstrating that a large-scale event can also be environmentally friendly

LA VAL D’ARAN

IF YOU COME HERE... YOU’LL WANT TO RETURN!

The beauty of the surroundings, the challenge of the courses, the warmth of its people.

The fifth edition of HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® begins, an event that wins over new runners each year and keeps bringing back those who already know what it means to experience it.

Everyone has their own reasons, but they all share a common feeling: HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® leaves no one indifferent.

But… why do they return, year after year?

“For me, above all, it’s the excellent organization, knowing they can make tough decisions, always prioritising the safety of volunteers and runners. And the route, right in the heart of the Pyrenees. I love it.

The last two times I felt I could’ve done better. I’m going to try again!”.

Maite Maiora

1.ª PDA 2022/ 4.ª CDH 2023 / 3.ª CDH 2024

Running the CDH this year.

“First of all, the environment. Val d’Aran is paradise, and the race lets you rediscover its privileged, marvellous landscape.

I’m coming back because the route is beautiful. And the level is so high, it makes this race a must”.

Aritz Egea

1.º CDH 2021 / 3.º PDA 2023

Running the PDA this year.

“The energy of the valley, the landscapes, the people… It all feels authentic and full of life. It’s a race you run with your heart. Returning is almost inevitable...

The course, the flawless organisation, and the warmth of the people make you want to come back again and again. Val d’Aran has something magical that hooks you, and this race is the perfect chance to reconnect with that magic”.

Eli Ríos

2.ª CDH 2022/ 2.ª CDH 2023/ 1.ª VDA 2024

Running the VDA this year.

“HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® feels like a trail festival in Spain. The villages nestled between mountains, even without glaciers, and the event, along with the meticulously organised Ultra-Trail® Village, really remind me of Chamonix.

I’m back to breathe in that festive atmosphere of the sport I love, and to compete fairly with strong athletes. Plus, I really enjoyed the route and the trails”.

Riccardo Montani

5.º CDH 2024 – Running the PDA this year.

“HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® is a very special race thanks to the beauty of the course, its many mountain passes, and the local culture. The town is so welcoming, and it seems like everyone comes together to create an incredible experience for both athletes and spectators.

I’m really excited to return in 2025, the course is tough but very rewarding, with views of the mountains and blue lakes. The event is really well organised and we had a fantastic time during our stay in 2024. Also... the patatas bravas!”.

Allison Baca

1.ª CDH 2024

Running the PDA and the EXP this year.

“It’s special because I think it’s one of the most beautiful and toughest races in the UTMB® circuit. Plus, it’s on home soil, and Val d’Aran is an impressive place that doesn’t have anything to envy from Chamonix.

I’m coming back because of the high level of competition, and, to be honest, the prize money. It’s also a race that really suits my strengths as a runner”.

Víctor del Águila Pellicer

1.º PDA 2024

Running the PDA again this year.

“Its landscapes… For me, it’s like running through the Spanish Switzerland, with breathtaking views and incredible crowd support. Running through Arties feels like flying, thanks to all the cheering.

Crossing the finish line gives you that feeling of personal triumph, surrounded by a corridor of people who admire what you’ve done. Val d’Aran is a dream race.

Running HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® has been one of the most beautiful experiences of my sporting career”.

Inés Astrain

1.ª PDA 2024

Running the PDA again this year.

“I have a love story with Val d’Aran. The area is stunning, and those wild horses take me back to my childhood, to when I played cowboys and read fairy tales set in the Wild West.

I’ve grown up, but I still want to play. That’s why I keep coming back”.

Gediminas Grinius

Runner of the PDA 2023/Runner of the PDA and the EXP 2024 Running the PDA again this year.

“I’ve had unforgettable moments in the mountains of the Val d’Aran, with family, friends, or on my own. I love the area and coming back is always easy.

HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® is a benchmark race in the trail running world. The atmosphere over several days, the athletic level, the courses… This year will be my third time here, and I’ll be debuting in a new distance.”

Andreu Simon

1.º CDH 2022 / 2.º CDH 2024

Running the PDA this year

“HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® really stands out for several reasons that make it a special experience for any trail runner.

First of all, I love the stunning natural beauty of Val d’Aran, towering mountains, green valleys, and beautiful lakes create a breathtaking backdrop.

Beyond the scenery, the kind and welcoming people add hugely to the event’s unique atmosphere. Their enthusiasm and support, both on the route and at the finish line, create a fantastic vibe.

The strong line-up at the start makes it a real challenge. For me, trail running is all about the joy of running and the chance to explore nature. That’s why Val d’Aran is the perfect race.

I’m coming back for the demanding course and the spectacular setting. I’m looking forward to pushing my limits and improving on the same route. This year will be even more special as I’ll be travelling with some good friends from Norway, and I can’t wait to share the experience with them”.

Mari Klakegg Fenre

2.ª CDH 2023/ 4.ª PDA 2024 Running the CDH this year.

“The Vielha area has a special charm, but it’s the atmosphere during the race and the places you pass through that are truly amazing.

Plus, being a Major, it’s really motivating as an elite athlete. Even more so being from Catalonia, racing at home gives you an extra boost, especially when your loved ones can be there with you. I’m racing again this year. I’m more recovered from the injury I had in 2023, so I’m ready to enjoy the PDA 55k.

I’m especially excited because I’ll have a lot of important people in my life cheering me on and giving me energy. So… can’t wait to start the adventure!”.

Sheila Avilés Castaño

3.ª SKY 2024 – Running the PDA this year.

“HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® is special for its mountains and the difficulty of its routes. Also, the whole valley is filled with a fantastic sporting spirit, one I’d love to see in Poland.

I keep coming back because I feel I have something to prove in the VDA. It’s the longest distance and very technically demanding. I love these kinds of challenges and I feel good taking them on. As the saying goes: third time’s the charm!”.

Roman Ficek

2º VDA 2024 / DNF on the VDA 2022 Running the VDA this year.

“The course is spectacular, it crosses the Pyrenean mountains via some of the best trails. It’s a truly beautiful route.

And even though it’s a major UTMB® event, it still retains a very special local feel, and the community around it makes it unique.

It’s an incredible event and also holds personal meaning for me: I had a breakthrough moment here in 2021 when I took second place in the VDA. After some tough seasons, I hope to achieve a similar result this time around”.

Morgan Pilley

2.º VDA 2021 – Running the VDA this year.

“YOU DON’T NEED TO BE THE MOST TALENTED, JUST THE MOST COMMITTED”

China continues to solidify its growing presence in the trail running world, ranking once again as the fourth most represented country at the starting lines of HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB®, matching its position from 2024. Japan holds the eighth spot.

Each year, the number of Asian participants increases significantly, with many of them taking on two or even three race distances. The event is also broadcast live through iQIYI Sports, China’s largest sports streaming platform, expanding its reach across the continent.

In this context of growing interest and participation, HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® is proud to welcome one of Asia’s most prominent trail running figures and one of the sport’s most internationally acclaimed athletes: Miao Yao.

Born in 1996, Miao Yao burst onto the ultratrail scene with outstanding performances that quickly placed her among the sport’s global elite. Her aggressive racing style and exceptional physical strength have led her to win iconic races such as the 2018 CCC® and the 2024 OCC® at HOKA UTMB® Mont Blanc.

But Miao’s story goes far beyond athletic achievements. With no money, coach, or sponsors, she worked as an apprentice in her sister’s beauty salon when she discovered trail running. For a time, she didn’t believe she had a future or any special talent. Yet through passion, discipline, and unwavering perseverance, she transformed her life through sport.

Today, Miao Yao is not only a symbol of trail running’s rapid growth in China but also a powerful example of dedication and authenticity. She doesn’t run just to compete, she runs to explore the world, connect with nature, and push the boundaries of her body and mind.

PDA RUNNER

What drew you to HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB®, and what does it mean to you to be here for the first time?

This year, I set out to run a by UTMB® race, and when I heard that Val d’Aran is known for its breathtaking beauty, it immediately caught my attention. Being here for the first time is a chance to explore a spectacular place while doing what I love.

What are your expectations for the race?

I’m really looking forward to discovering the PDA course. In my mind, Spanish trails are always rugged and wild: full of rocks, steep climbs, and technical sections. I’m excited to find out what surprises this route has in store.

China has become a trail running powerhouse, and this year it ranks as the fourth country with the most participants at Val d’Aran. What do you think explains this growing number of registrations?

I think media coverage has played a key role in helping more people in China discover trail running. As more runners see the beauty, challenge, and sense of adventure that the sport offers, they feel inspired to take part. It’s really encouraging to see the community growing so quickly.

There was a time when, as you once said in an interview, you felt you had no future or particular talent. Now you are one of the most popular runners in China. What message would you like to share with people who might be in the same place you once were?

Find something you truly enjoy, something that lights a spark in you, and give yourself fully to it. Passion and perseverance can take you farther than you ever imagined. You don’t need to be the most talented, just the most committed.

When your energy is low, where do you find the motivation to keep going?

I slow down, refocus, and make sure I’m fueling properly. I’ve learned to listen to my body: once I give it time to recover and absorb the energy it needs, I find the strength to move forward again.

What has trail running given you, and what does it continue to bring to your life?

Trail running has shown me the world. It has taken me to incredible places and allowed me to meet people I never would have crossed paths with otherwise. It’s not just a sport, it’s my passion, my profession, and an essential part of who I am.

THE SOUND OF DREAMS FULFILLED AT

Some gestures sum up entire feats. They are the fruit of months of effort and sacrifice, the reflection of dreams realised.

At HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB®, that gesture is the ringing of a bell. An emotion. A celebration. A sound that spreads through every corner of the Val d’Aran to announce that a new exploit has become reality.

The finish line bell of HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® has become one of the event’s emblems. The idea arose almost by intuition. “We wanted something runners could visualise as their ultimate goal, like an arch or anything closely tied to the finish line, and in the end the bell emerged. Romanesque churches and their bell towers are among the most important features of our valley, so we thought this would let us weave a fundamental part of our culture into the race, giving runners a symbol they could always keep in mind, while perfectly representing the valley,” explains race director Xavier Pocino.

And so the bell was born. A symbol. The meeting point of nature, history, and human endeavour.

Its sound is the honest voice of hand forged iron, cast in the workshops of the Cubillo Brothers in Cantabria, master bell makers for more than 500 years, whose craft defies the passage of time. A bell born of the earth, painstakingly shaped, destined to break the silence with the force of emotion.

A Symbol Laden with Roots

The choice was no accident. The peal of bells forms part of the Val d’Aran’s soundscape. The Romanesque belfries crowning the stone churches not only grace the skyline: for centuries they have been the deepest, most symbolic means of communication between the valley’s villages, announcing births, farewells, celebrations and gatherings.

In a land where mountains divide and time seems to pause, sound has always been a way to connect. Placing a bell at the finish line anchors the race to the identity of the place, bringing runners not only to Vielha, but to the very soul of the valley. To reach a finish, and to connect with a tradition, leaving a vibration that the wind will carry to the mountains.

Because when the bell rings, the whole valley listens.

UTMB® for the Planet is the name of UTMB® Group’s sustainability strategy, the result of our commitment to creating a positive impact on the world, because we are aware of the importance of our role in shaping a sustainable future for our sport, our communities, and our planet.

INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY

UTMB® strongly believes in equal rights and opportunities for all members of the trail running community. We are in the process of creating policies of inclusion and diversity in terms of gender, race, age, social class and other aspects. We strive to grow and continue to evolve the sport to make the UTMB® World Series welcoming to all athletes.

As part of our ongoing commitment to promote the inclusion of athletes with disabilities in trail running, the UTMB® Group has introduced an adapted sport policy which applies to all UTMB® World Series events. This initiative seeks to officially recognise athletes with disabilities and to offer them solutions to facilitate their participation in UTMB® World Series events.

‘IF I CAN DO IT, YOU CAN DO IT’ JUAN JOSÉ ESTEVE, EXP RUNNER

In 2010, during the popular local festivities in Puzol, a town in the province of Valencia, where he is from, a bull gored him in the thigh, causing a 30 centimetre gash.

After 38 days in hospital, Juan José López, better known as El Penyo, decided to have his leg amputated. But, far from regretting it, he took on the situation and nine months later he was already competing in races.

What does it mean to you to face a challenge like the EXP of HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB®?

Taking on the HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® EXP is an incredible opportunity to continue demonstrating that sport is for everyone, regardless of circumstances. In the end, sport is health, and anyone with the right preparation can take on a challenge like this. It is no longer a question of limitations, but of passion and will.

How are you preparing for this challenge?

I have the help of my coach, who will also be my running companion. We plan it like any other training session, with weekly plans to accumulate kilometres and elevation gain until we reach 70 to 90 kilometres a week, as long as the prosthesis allows me to do so, as it is common for me to get sores or wounds due to the accumulation of distance. I also have between two and three strength days and two quality days (series, fartleck, etc.).

In 2010 you suffered a goring that could have ended your life. How does a person recover after something like that?

It wasn’t traumatic for me, to be honest. I dealt with it quickly and I asked for my leg to be amputated. I think that, when you are faced with adversity, it is essential to gain time to deal with the problems and act quickly. I did that, and within nine months I was racing. Within two years I was European Half Ironman Champion.

The key is to adapt to the new situation, accept it, and help your companions to do the same. Sport was what allowed me to find my way back.

You were the first amputee in Spain to finish a marathon. What does sport give you?

Sport has been my medicine. It has given me the opportunity to improve myself, to set goals, and to do things that I couldn’t even imagine doing before my amputation. I have been one of the first to participate in races like the Titan Desert, and to finish races like the Transvulcania Ultra. Sport has allowed me to face unthinkable challenges and, most importantly, it has given me the daily motivation to keep going. It has also made my life easier professionally, as today I make my living from sport.

The UTMB® Group has introduced an adapted sport policy to promote the inclusion of athletes with disabilities in trail races. From your point of view, what should be done to encourage this participation in events of this nature?

I think the key is visibility and accessibility. Organisers need to keep working to make races more and more inclusive, not only in terms of infrastructure, but also by creating a community that supports athletes with disabilities. There is still a long way to go, but initiatives like those of UTMB® are a step in the right direction.

What is trail running for you?

Trail running is probably the most technical and complicated sport for me, but, at the same time, the one that fulfils me the most. After the amputation, running long distances over all kinds of terrain was something I never imagined I could do. And that’s why it’s the sport in which I feel most fulfilled as an athlete. Besides, I have always received a lot of affection from the trail running community, and having the opportunity to be at the start of a race like HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® is a dream come true.

Do you have any phrase, motto, or thought that you repeat to yourself in difficult moments?

The motto that has always accompanied me is: ‘If I can do it, you can do it’. It’s my philosophy when I give talks. I’m not a physical or genetic wonder, I’m just a constant person who works hard. With a little effort, anyone can achieve their goals.

An

anecdote you will never forget.

Once, in the Transvulcania Ultra, my only goal was to reach the finish line within the time cut. Every time I reached an aid station, I saw runners taking off their shoes, about to retire. When they saw me arrive, eat and continue, they would ask me if I wasn’t retiring. And of course, I said no. The incredible thing was that, at that moment, many of them decided to continue and, in the end, we all made it to the finish line. It was a very emotional experience, after 16 hours, to be able to help others to fulfil their dream of finishing an ultra.

What would you say to someone who is going through a critical moment?

Sometimes life throws us difficult obstacles, but the important thing is not to give up. Adversity is an opportunity to grow and learn. If I was able to get through it, I’m sure you can too. Don’t let anything stop you and keep looking for that goal that motivates you.

Fifteen years after that goring, how has your life changed in all this time?

Fifteen years have passed and the truth is... it has changed my life completely, but for the better. What at the time seemed like the end, ended up being the beginning of something much bigger. I learned to see things differently, to give importance to what really counts, and to never give up. Thanks to everything I have experienced over the years, today I can say that I am much stronger, that I still have challenges that excite me, and that sport has given me a life that I never even imagined. If I look back, I don’t see a tragedy, I see an opportunity that I was able to take advantage of.

‘I

DON’T HAVE TIME IS THE GREAT EXCUSE FOR NOT DOING THINGS’ RAMÓN ARROYO, EXP RUNNER

Ramón Arroyo is a Spanish economist and triathlete whose story of self-improvement has inspired thousands of people. Born in Bilbao in 1971, he led a full and active life until 2004, at the age of 32, when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Doctors predicted that in a year’s time he would not be able to walk even 100 metres. Far from resigning himself, Ramón decided to face the disease with determination. He began to train gradually, participating in popular races and marathons. In 2013 he managed to complete an Ironman in Calella, one of the most demanding triathlon events, which includes 3.86 km swimming, 180 km cycling, and 42.2 km running.

His inspiring story was made into a film in 2016 with the movie “100 metres”, directed by Marcel Barrena and starring Dani Rovira. The film received multiple nominations and recognitions, including awards from the Spanish Society of Neurology and ONCE.

In addition, Ramón captured his experience in the book “Surrender is not an option”, where he recounts his struggle with the disease and how sport became his ally to face the daily challenges.

Today, Ramón Arroyo continues to be an example of resilience and overcoming, demonstrating that, with determination and support, it is possible to face even the most difficult adversities.

What prompted you to participate in EXP?

Mainly two aspects. The location, because since I was a child I have had a special affection and connection with the Valley, and I am in love with it. In winter for skiing, in spring, in summer, in autumn... It’s a marvellous place, where I have a dream, unfulfilled for the moment, of living or retiring. The Valley has meant a lot, and what better way than to make my debut there, and this is my second appearance. I’ve been doing triathlons since 2008, but because of fear and my difficulty in keeping my balance on certain occasions, I haven’t dared to run in the mountains. I thought it wasn’t my place until I started running with poles, which gives me two fundamental points of support to keep my balance.

How are you preparing for this challenge?

It’s been a bit peculiar because I had planned to run in the Barcelona Marathon and the Monday before, skiing in Baqueira, my leg got caught and I sprained the internal lateral ligament of my leg, which has meant a month and a half’s break. So, although I’m still in good shape, I need to strengthen my strength and balance. And technically I have to go out once or twice to run in the mountains. I have a personal trainer, Pablo Lucero, who is a great expert and knows me well and knows what my limitations and strengths are.

What does sport mean in your life?

A lot of things. It is a fundamental part of my therapy. It has not only brought me physical benefits, but also psychological, cognitive, social benefits... I have been involved in sport since I was a child, mainly skiing, although I gave it up a bit at university. Thanks to returning to sport I have recovered something that is fundamental for me, which is part of my life, of my health, and thanks to it I have learned to live in a friendly way with multiple sclerosis, I have been able to make myself known, and tell my story... Sport is a fundamental pillar for anyone who wants to face life with a certain quality and with a certain health..

A

moment you will never forget.

On a personal level, the birth of my children. They have been a medicine, a therapy, and an extra motivation to keep going in life and in sport. And on the sporting side there are several. I remember with great affection a half marathon in Madrid, where I really enjoyed myself and felt like a real athlete. Of course the Barcelona Ironman in 2013, which was the culmination of the whole story, of all the effort, and, above all, the arrival at the finish line and seeing the satisfied faces of all my people... It was something I will never forget.

And an anecdote that you never get tired of telling.

I couldn’t choose just one. So many things have happened to me... I remember once, on the cycle lane in Madrid, I met another cyclist, we got talking, and he told me he knew Ramón Arroyo... He didn’t recognise me, I suppose because of the helmet... And very nice anecdotes, like the number of people who stop me in the street and share their life story with me, and thank me for the book, the film, or the interviews, which motivate them. It’s a beautiful thing.

When your strength fails, where do you find the motivation to keep going?

By looking inside myself. I think it’s something you have to go back to the origin. You have to ask yourself why. Because the reason why I run is clear to me, and the reason I keep running is for

my health. I find motivation in asking myself what is the reason or why I am running. It’s realising that doing sport is not just a hobby, but a vital necessity.

Your story was shown in the film 100 metres, with Dani Rovira in the lead role. How did your life reach the big screen?

I did a small project that came about through the networks, so we recorded a Informe Robinson called El reto de Ramón that went viral. One of the people who saw it was Marcel Barrena and he thought there was a story to tell. At first I thought it was a joke, but then I made myself available to him. Not everyone has the opportunity to tell their story in a film. Although I believe that we all have a life of film and a story to share.

What did that experience give you?

It was wonderful. For a person like me, who is not connected to this world, to be able to participate so deeply in the whole process was an incredible experience, a learning experience and something that continues to surpass me, because I consider that my story is not exceptional. There are so many stories worth telling. What it gave me, fundamentally, is to be aware that you can achieve things that, a priori, we believe are not possible.

It has been 20 years since you were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. What lessons have you learned from this stage of your life?

In August it will be 21. The big learning is that we can turn around what in principle is bad news. What I learned, and continue to learn, is to see the opportunity in a negative event, which, in my case, is the diagnosis of a chronic and degenerative disease. It is the great excuse that life has given me to make a change, to redirect it, and to do what really fulfils me and what I am passionate about. Thanks to sclerosis I am aware that I am vulnerable, that I need to lean on others. I have realised that there are a lot of good people, that motivation is fundamental, that surrounding yourself with the best... And I have learned to enjoy the little things in life. Something very trivial can become a wonderful experience.

What advice would you give to those who, due to different circumstances, are going through a difficult time - be it illness, personal problems, etc.?

I don’t really like to give advice... But I would tell everyone not to waste their time. If I look back, what I reproach myself for is having wasted time, and you can’t get time back. It is the only asset we have. So my advice to everybody is not to waste time and to get going, and to fulfil your dreams, your goals. At least try. Don’t let it be a question of not having tried. I don’t have time is the big excuse for not doing things. And it’s not true.

WOMEN IN TRAIL

At HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® we want to promote female participation in mountain races.

Encouraging the inclusion of women in trail running competitions not only advances the fight for gender equality, but also enriches the essence of this discipline, promoting values such as inclusion, resilience and collaboration.

To achieve this, it is crucial to promote projects that overcome social and cultural barriers, create safe and supportive spaces, and provide role models that inspire more women to join this exciting activity.

To this end, at HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® we are carrying out a series of initiatives to encourage more women to take part in this experience:

Woman Kit

Since the last edition, the women of HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® will find a Woman Kit at all the aid stations, as well as at the finish line. It will contain essential products for personal hygiene such as sanitary towels, tampons, intimate wipes and hydroalcoholic gel.

Toilets for women only.

Women’s changing rooms at the aid stations with a life bag (Bossòst, Salardú, and Arties).

Pregnancy policy

UTMB® strives to facilitate and encourage the participation of women in trail running races, and has therefore implemented a new policy concerning pregnancy which applies to all the events of the UTMB® World Series circuit.

CHARITY BIBS

With all the distances completed for months now, HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® has once again offered the possibility of acquiring a charity bib and running for a good cause.

The purpose of this initiative, which took place for the first time last year, is to support a series of local projects related to solidarity, health, inclusion and the environment.

Specifically, 45 Charity Bibs have been put on sale, 15 for the CDH, 15 for the PDA, and 15 for the EXP.

The amount donated will go to three local non-profit organisations chosen by HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB®.

The organisations selected are:

• ADDA, the Aran Association for the Disabled ,an association whose purpose is to help people with intellectual disabilities of working age who, due to their characteristics, cannot access a work contract, and which currently welcomes users from the Val d’Aran and Alta Ribagorça. In addition, ADDA has been carrying out different tasks for the event since its first edition, such as the preparation of the ribbons, the signposting that is distributed throughout the valley, or the production of magnets and trophy plaques for the winners.

• Càritas d’Urgell – Centre Val d’Aran, an organisation that seeks to promote, guide and coordinate the social and charitable action of the Diocese of Urgell, particularly in the Val d’Aran, with projects focused on children and young people, the elderly, the homeless and housing, employment programmes, shelter and accompaniment, social aid, and social and solidarity economy.

• Associació contra el càncer d’era Val d’Aran, organiser of summer camps in the Val d’Aran for children with cancer or with family members with cancer.

Donations are raised by UTMB® Cares, a non-profit foundation created by the UTMB® Group, and a global initiative to unite the worldwide trail running community and create positive change by supporting local social and environmental causes in the circuit’s race destinations. Rooted in the values of solidarity, respect, inclusion, authenticity and humility, UTMB® Cares uses the global platform of the UTMB® World Series to influence local positive change, focusing on three main pillars: people, the environment, and communities.

In its fourth edition, held in 2024, HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® launched for the first time this initiative, which has been in place for years at HOKA UTMB® Mont-Blanc. Specifically, 19 race bibs were sold, and a sum of 9,500 euros was raised.

HAVE YOU ALREADY MET OUR BELOVED MASCOT VOP?

If you experienced HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® 2024, surely you crossed paths with him, shook his hand, or even he even asked you to dance, because... he was one of the sensations of the event!

Vop is our beloved mascot, a cheerful fox created by Martina L., a 5th grade student at Escola Ruda de Salardú, winner of the Mascot Drawing Competition, designed to promote, from childhood, important values such as health, sport, care for the environment and respect for the environment.

This year Vop returns to HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® to share her energy with you, so if you see him...

Don’t hesitate to come and say hello!

ANTI-DOPING

UTMB® GROUP REINFORCES ITS COMMITMENT TO CLEAN TRAIL RUNNING

Once again this year, HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® will carry out anti-doping controls on the first classified runners in the VDA, 100M; CDH, 100K; and PDA, 50K and random controls on the rest of the participants.

This measure is part of the anti-doping policy of the UTMB® Group, which is committed to establishing solid bases to encourage clean sport, to promote the development of trail running and to guarantee integrity and transparency in competition.

‘As a world reference in trail running, we have a responsibility to lead the fight against doping in our sport’, declared Frédéric Lenart, General Manager of the UTMB® Group.

In 2024, UTMB® Group reinforced this commitment with an investment of more than 100,000 euros, in close collaboration with the International Agency for Anti-Doping Control (ITA), an independent body specialised in the fight against doping.

In addition, an anti-doping regulation has been developed:

A specific anti-doping regulation has been created for the UTMB® World Series, aligned with the WADA World Anti-Doping Code.

A comprehensive educational programme has been designed to support and guide both elite athletes and their management teams in the practice of clean sport.

HOKA PRIZE PURSE

A FIRM COMMITMENT TO RUNNERS AND EQUALITY IN TRAIL RUNNING

UTMB® Group is highlighting its commitment to elite runners with the HOKA Prize Purse, a significant cash prize that supports the professionalisation of trail running.

Real support for professional athletes

The HOKA Prize Purse was created with a clear objective: to support athletes who combine demanding training with their professional careers. The investment not only recognises their physical and mental effort, but also offers them tangible support to continue their sporting development with guarantees. In a sport where consistency is key, having financial backing makes all the difference.

Parity and equality: facts, not words

One of the most outstanding aspects of this endowment is its firm commitment to gender equality. The UTMB® Group is clear: performance knows no gender. This is why the prizes are exactly the same for men and women, both in the UTMB® World Series Finals and in the Majors.

This commitment also extends to the different race categories. In events such as HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB®, the prizes are divided equally between the three distances VDA (100M), CDH (100K) and PDA (50K). The top five finishers, both men and women, receive:

1st place: 5,000 €.

2nd place: 3.000 €.

3rd place: 2.000 €.

4th place: 1.250 €.

5th place: 1.000 €.

In this way, the UTMB® World Series recognises the value of all distances. Because coming first in a 50K, 100K or 100M race requires different skills, but all equally admirable: endurance, technique, mental strength and enormous determination.

A race that rewards more than ever

As well as being one of the trail events with the most participants in Spain, with the HOKA Prize Purse, HOKA Val d’Aran by UTMB® is also one of the most generous. It is thus consolidated as an essential event not only for its beauty and toughness, but also for the recognition of those who strive to be among the elite.

Because in the UTMB® World Series, crossing the finish line is not only a personal achievement, it can also be a professional boost. And that, in a sport like trail running, is much more than a prize: it is a message of respect and evolution.
