Should OLLI have to cancel a course for any reason, tuition credits can be held for future semesters. You may also request a refund. Should you need to cancel a course, please advise the OLLI office prior to the course commencing.

Once a course begins, you can drop the course until the second session for a tuition credit, but you must notify us immediately. We cannot retroactively issue a tuition credit. If you must cancel because of health issues, please notify the OLLI office immediately. No credits can be issued after the second session of a course.

A Few FAQs Q: May I bring a friend to an OLLI class, just to get an idea of our wonderful classes?

A: Please encourage your friends to join OLLI and participate. Membership is a value at $25. It is not possible for non–members to “sample” OLLI courses. If a friend or relative is visiting you from another state and you want to spend time with your guests without missing OLLI classes, check with the staff to see if it’s possible for them to attend one class session. Non–member guests may not attend OLLI fitness sessions as guests. No one can attend and “just watch!” OLLI facilities cannot accommodate children as guests of OLLI members.

Q: Can someone who is an OLLI member in another state register for OLLI at UTMB Health classes?

A: This question often arises within the national OLLI Network of 125 institutes across all the states. So far there is no equitable way to transfer memberships since membership costs and practices vary widely across the nation.

Q: When someone registers for a Tuesday yoga class and must miss a class for a doctor’s appointment, is it okay to catch up by attending the Thursday class?

A: You must attend only classes on days for which you’ve registered and paid tuition. Some people solve this dilemma by enrolling in more than one day. Even if you miss a few sessions, OLLI courses offer terrific value for your tuition dollars.

Get Hooked on Crochet–Part 1 4 Weeks: $20 tuition Instructor: Marianne Pascal Fridays, February 9–March 1, 10:00 a.m. to Noon There is a crochet pattern and project for everyone to be successful– once you know the basic stitches and a few tips and tricks for working your yarn more easily. This is a basic beginner 4–week crochet class that will begin with holding your hook and yarn with proper tension, guide you through basic stitches, and explore two different types of yarn. We will make a bookmark and a dish towel/ hand towel/washcloth to practice stitches. A materials list will be sent beforehand to bring to the first class. (Limit 14)

Creating Fun Memories with the Grandkids

Birds of a feather flock together, but birds with this home will never roam! Come learn how to design and create an adorable mosaic birdhouse. No grouting is involved, and no art or mosaic experience is required. Deadline to register March 1. (Limit 14)

Come learn lots of boredom–busting ideas for keeping the grandkids busy this summer… without busting the bank! As the doting “Nonna” of 7 kids, Michele Patrick is full of free (or cheap) ideas that will not only be fun but will also create lifelong memories. Plant Prints on Fabric

3–Hour Workshop ($10 supply fee due to instructor—cash only) Instructor: Suzanne Becker Discover the timeless art of sewing by hand in this immersive course. Wednesday, May 1, 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.

Learn essential techniques like threading a needle, sewing basic stitches, hemming, and repairing fabrics. Develop your hand–sewing Spend an afternoon discovering the textures and shapes of gathered skills, boost your creativity and gain a deeper appreciation for the plants and printing with them on various fabric items. “Djembe Jam” invites you to discover the rhythmic magic of the djembe drum. Explore the art of playing along to music, learning diverse beats and grooves. We’ll be playing songs on the first day! Our required course book, “Essential Elements for Guitar–Book 1: Comprehensive Guitar Method” by Will Schmid and Bob Morris (Hal Leonard Publishers, needed with “Audio Access Included”), includes many familiar songs, and we sing while we play. Purchase the book and a guitar on your own before class begins. (Limit 18)

You will learn more chords and new finger skills in this next–level class. Each class has difference music. Advance your ukulele skills in this intermediate course, open to students who’ve completed OLLI’s “Beginning Fun with the Ukulele” or who satisfy entrance criteria. This course hones your chording, strumming, fingerpicking, and melody–playing skills. Utilizing Marty Gross’s Essential Elements Ukulele Method Book 2 (Hal Leonard Publishers), we’ll sing and play tunes like “A Hard Day’s Night” and “Over the Rainbow.” Obtain your book before class and bring your ukulele. Line dance performs patterned, rhythmic foot movements in unison with the music. It blends dance, music, and exercise, promoting physical fitness. This fun workout will help tone muscles, improve coordination and balance, and enhance concentration and flexibility. Each dance will be introduced with detailed instruction and modifications, and new dances will be presented as the group progresses. Participants need footwear that allows them to slide or swivel easily. (Limit 30)

Join our intensive tournament poker course to enhance your poker skills and dominate the game. Learn advanced strategies, study hand ranges, master pot odds, and develop your reading abilities.

Understand position play, timing tells, and the art of bluffing. Gain the expertise needed to compete and succeed in poker tournaments.

Dancing provides many benefits, including physical fitness, mental stimulation, and emotional bonding. Considering the many reasons to start dancing, we challenge you to find one good reason you shouldn’t join us in this fun, western–style couples dance class. Canasta, initially invented in Uruguay, is making a comeback! This fun, easy–to–learn game offers a less intense experience than bridge, but it requires skill, luck, and attentiveness. Wild cards include jokers and deuces. Groups will play with two or three regular decks, and two, three, or four players can enjoy a complete game. We’ll provide the cards, instructions, and a set of written rules. (Limit 20)

You’ll become a citizen scientist by just snapping pictures of the plants and animals you see whether they’re in a nature preserve, your own backyard, or the cracks of a sidewalk.

Join us to learn how you can participate, then wander through the neighborhood with us to practice. This will also get you ready for the City Nature Challenge, a global competition to discover how many different species of wildlife can be found in different areas over the course of one long weekend (April 26 –29, 2024). In this yoga class, participants will use a chair to aid standing and balancing poses. There is no “mat” work, but participants must be able to sit and stand from the chair frequently. These sessions will be vinyasa yoga, linking breath and movement. There will be stretching, flowing, breathing, and relaxing. All levels of physical abilities are welcome, but you must be able to get in and out of the chair on your own. FREE Fitness Sessions are open to all and do not require membership in OLLI.

Balanced Bites: Monthly Healthy Cooking Workshop

OLLI at UTMB Angleton welcomes all those 55 and over to participate in FREE Fitness sessions held every Tuesday, and Thursday from 9 to 10 AM (50 weeks a year) at FWS Center for Health and Wellness. Sessions offer seated low-impact fitness activities. All props and weights required are provided by OLLI. There is no charge, and no pre-registration is required. You can drop in for a single session, attend every week, or participate occasionally at your convenience. All sessions are FREE!

Get a Taste for Reducing Food Waste is a learning series that uses practical ideas and information to help people reduce the amount of food that goes to waste in the home. Participants learn how to plan healthy meals, store foods correctly to prevent spoilage and food waste, save a little money, and even compost food to keep it out of the local landfill.

the evidence-based National Diabetes Prevention Program using the CDC’s accredited PreventT2® curriculum features an approach that is proven to stop/delay prediabetes from progressing into type 2 diabetes. If you have prediabetes, these lifestyle changes can cut your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half. By improving food choices and increasing physical activity, you can lose 5 to 7 percent of your body weight. This program is made available for adults with prediabetes. Toolkit for Active Living with Chronic Conditions this program is proven to help participants with chronic co-existing conditions learn decision-making, better breathing, dealing with pain, dealing with difficult emotions, and more. This program is made available for people 65 years of age and older with diabetes and hypertension, heart disease, stroke, or arthritis.

Receive a toolkit by mail and chat with your Certified Leader and peers for 1 hour once weekly for 6 weeks in person, over the phone, or live online.

Health Coaches for Hypertension Control (HCHC) Developed by the Clemson Institute for Engaged Aging, this program has been proven to help people with high blood pressure better manage their condition by focusing on nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and more. Trained facilitators guide the small-group program and participants receive a free electronic blood pressure monitor and other educational materials. This program is made available for people 65 years of age and older with diabetes and hypertension. Meet with your Certified HCHC Leader for 1.5 hours weekly for 8 weeks in person, or live online.

Geri-Fit® a strength bodybuilding program. Most exercises are seated. All exercises are safe for all levels of fitness. This program is made available for people 65 years of age and older with diabetes. Meet with your Certified Geri-Fit® Instructor for 45 minutes twice weekly for 12 weeks in person, or live online.

Walk With Ease (WWE) Developed by the Arthritis Foundation, this program has been proven to help people with arthritis engage in walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises to reduce pain, increase balance, and strength, and build confidence in their ability to be physically active. This program is made available for people 65 years of age and older with diabetes and arthritis. Meet with your Certified WWE Leader for 45 min thrice weekly for 6 weeks in person or receive the book and work at your own pace checking in with your leader periodically.
