University Housing and the university just wrapped up a one-billiondollar building campaign and the UT Foundation raised over $1.3 billion during this time. The building campaign and fund-raising campaign has transformed our campus. University Housing has opened six new residence halls in the past eight years. It is an exciting time to be a part of the Tennessee Family. We have developed this recruitment guide to give you information about our department and the university. This guide includes descriptions of our professional staff positions, a summary of our compensation package and benefits, a pictorial directory of our current staff, and information about the Knoxville community. HALL DIRECTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION

The hall director is an entry-level, full-time, twelve-month, live-in position with University Housing. Hall directors are responsible for developing and administering a comprehensive residence life program focused on community development and student contact in residence halls housing between 495 and 1036 predominately undergraduate students. Hall directors serve as the catalyst for student contact and development in the community and are designated as frontline staff members for staff supervision and development, student discipline, program development, on-call crisis protocol, and facility management. Hall directors are responsible for the selection, training, evaluation, and development of graduate assistant(s), resident assistants, and office assistants. Hall directors are expected to have direct contact with residents through routine daily interactions. Each spring semester, hall directors will instruct a section of the Resident Assistant Training Course as part of the RA selection process. Bachelor’s and master’s degrees are required. A master’s in College Student Personnel, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, or Student Development is preferred. Qualified candidates will have experience in residence life, community development, and staff supervision, as well as leadership and effectiveness in promoting respect and appreciation for diversity among students and staff. Annual salary is competitive with other institutions. Hall directors receive a university benefits package, a furnished apartment at no cost, including utilities and a meal plan. FAQS What environmental initiatives has University Housing implemented at the university? We encourage residents to recycle, especially during check-in at the beginning of the year and check-out at the end. During fall 2020, University Housing worked with the Office of Sustainability and recycled 33,540 pounds of cardboard. In addition to these efforts, the University Housing partners with the Office of Sustainability to host the Make Orange Green POWER Challenge to see which hall is best at recycling and reducing energy and water consumption. Does University Housing encourage hall directors to seek partnerships with other departments on campus? We encourage continual growth and development among our hall directors. After a hall director has become well versed with the yearlong responsibilities associated with operating a residence hall, the department encourages part of the hall director’s time to be allotted to another department on campus with the understanding that the hall director position is the primary responsibility.

What type of special communities does University Housing offer? We currently have thirteen Living and Learning Communities (LLCs), in seven residence halls on campus. For 2021-2022, we will have sixteen LLCs in ten residence halls.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. STAFF/STUDENT INVOLVEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

The hall director serves as the catalyst for community involvement in her or his assigned building. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Foster a sense of community in the building. Use creative and innovative methods to personally connect to residents. Eat meals in the student dining facilities to increase visibility and connection opportunities with students. VISIBILITY Be available to residents and staff. Serve as a positive role model. Maintain office hours. Attend floor, building, and/or area functions. Hall directors are the professional staff members available in each residence hall for student contact. A desire to spend evening and weekend time with students is required. SUPERVISION Motivate and direct building staff (RAs, AHDs, and student desk staff). Conduct individual and performance assessment meetings to develop and review goals/outcomes achieved, and to provide and solicit feedback. Conduct weekly staff meetings to discuss issues and recognize contributions. Provide formal evaluations of building staff members (RAs, AHDs, and student desk staff). ADVISING Identify, encourage, and provide leadership opportunities to students. Serve as advisor, mentor, and resource to hall associations, campus student organizations, student staff, and individual residents. Provide individual advising meetings for students with academic, social, interpersonal, and adjustment concerns. EDUCATION Ensure programs are designed to connect resident students to their floor, building, and university communities. Work with the resident assistants and hall associations to develop programs and activities that meet the diverse development needs of students. Advise hall association members as they work to accomplish their goals and vision. TRAINING Assist in the development and instruction of resident assistant training classes and of workshops conducted for all staff prior to the beginning of each semester and throughout the year.

2. COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT The hall director provides professional direction of an assigned building. CONDUCT Enforce and support all university and departmental policies and regulations. In cooperation with the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, assist in the administration of the university’s judicial process for students living in residence halls. CRISIS/ON-CALL DUTY Work closely with university staff in crisis situations. Develop a schedule with building head staff to ensure coverage. CONFLICT RESOLUTION Provide appropriate counseling and referral for individual students and staff as needed. ADMINISTRATION Maintain proper building records, file weekly reports, and meet all area and departmental deadlines. STAFF SELECTION Select, supervise, train, and evaluate staff (GAs, RAs, AHDs, and student office assistants). LIAISON Work to build relationships with the building housekeeping supervisor, the area housekeeping coordinator, the assigned maintenance personnel, the Housing Operations Office and the UT Police Department to assure the physical environment is maintained at an acceptable level. BUDGET Administer the office supply, hall association, programming, staff development, and athletic equipment budgets for the hall. ASSIGNMENT Direct all functions of the hall’s assignment process and maintain accurate room occupancy data for the hall. Process student requests for room and/or hall changes and termination of their housing contracts. Participate in administration of the room/hall selection process. SUMMER OPERATIONS Coordinate conference services, summer school housing, orientation tours, and work on departmental committees and projects as assigned by an assistant director. PUBLIC RELATIONS Investigate and respond to concerns and complaints of students, parents, university staff members, and others in a manner that provides accurate information and fosters good public relations.

3. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The hall director sets goals and priorities to develop herself or himself professionally. DEPARTMENT Serve on assigned departmental committees, task forces, and specific task projects. Assist in policy formulation for the department. PROFESSION Represent the department at professional conferences through attendance, presentations, and committee involvement. Participate in continuing education and personal development opportunities. PROFESSIONAL REPUTATION Project a professional reputation through appearance and conduct (written and verbal communication and behavior). Demonstrate dependability and accountability by being punctual in meeting attendance as well as in adhering to deadlines.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

University Housing believes that candidates should be making well-informed choices about career options. To this end, we strive to provide as much information as possible about the standard of living that a person accepting a position at UT might expect. The information in this section was designed to provide you with answers to some important questions about salary and basic benefits. We hope it will generate additional inquiries. We believe the overall compensation package for our staff positions is extremely competitive, and we encourage you to look closely at what other institutions are offering when weighing your career options.

SALARY • The hall director salary is very competitive with peer institutions. The department will pay for registration, travel, meals, and lodging for one professional conference, either in person or virtually. In addition to professional conferences, the department holds ongoing professional development sessions for the hall directors to attend. The university also provides numerous opportunities for professional development, including leadership certificates, communication certificates, computer-training classes, and other individual courses. For a complete list of training opportunities, visit hr.tennessee.edu/training. • Since Tennessee does not have a state income tax, many employees new to the state find their percentage of take-home pay to be higher than at other places where they have worked. • Staff members earn one sick leave day per month of employment. • Staff members earn two annual leave days per month of employment, or the equivalent of almost five weeks of vacation each year.

INSURANCE A wide range of insurance options are available for staff members, including dental care, vision, long-term disability, and a flexible benefits plan, which sets aside pre-tax dollars for medical expenses. The cost of these optional benefit plans is generally very reasonable, and each should be evaluated as it pertains to your individual needs before an enrollment decision is made. RETIREMENT Participation in a retirement plan is a condition of employment for regular full-time employees. The State of Tennessee is the administrator for the retirement plan for all State employees, including the University of Tennessee. There are several plans from which to choose. More information is available at hr.tennessee.edu/benefits.

MEALS Hall directors are provided with a full meal plan as a part of their compensation package. Three plans are available to best meet each staff member’s needs.

FACILITIES • Staff members are provided with rent-free, furnished apartments, local phone, and utilities. The hall director apartments are cleaned on a weekly basis by the housekeeping staff. • Each hall director’s apartment is wired for free internet access. • Each building has a staff laundry where staff members can do their laundry without charge. • Although parking on campus is scarce, hall directors are provided with assigned parking spaces at a cost of $30 each month. • For $27 per month, staff members may purchase the equivalent of membership in a full-service health club.

EXTRAS • The mountains and lakes of East Tennessee provide a full spectrum of opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast, including hiking, biking, camping, canoeing, fishing, skiing, and whitewater rafting. The Smoky Mountains, Big South Fork, and several Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) lakes are within an hour’s drive from campus. • Knoxville offers an array of activities, local restaurants, and other opportunities for entertainment, such as the World’s Fair Park, Downtown and Market Square, cultural festivals, Knoxville Zoo and Ijams Nature Center. • Tennessee is Big Orange Country, and one of the most popular extra benefits provided hall directors is the opportunity to purchase season sports tickets. Even if you’re not a big sports fan, you are sure to enjoy the excitement of being among the 100,000+ fans who turn out to support the Vols for home football games, or take in one of the topranked Lady Vols basketball contests.
