Fall 2023 Student Life Impact Report

Over the past year, the Division of Student Life has continued to deliver incredible student experiences that grow and transform today’s Volunteers, provide care that is inclusive and meaningful, and steward campus resources and spaces that make Rocky Top home to more than 36,000 students.

We’ve expanded our team, celebrated incredible milestones, and launched new initiatives. In August, we hosted Tennessee Saturday Night, an inaugural premiere event that welcomed students to campus.

We are expanding our programming footprint to better serve graduate student needs. Following a pandemic hiatus, we launched a new funding competition aimed at producing innovative ideas and renewed our work in creating a campus community where everyone matters and belongs.

Whether it’s exploring their CliftonStrengths at a leadership retreat, completing a practicum or internship, or enhancing their skills through AI software or discussion groups, we support student growth and engagement. On campus, within themselves, and in the broader community, Vols are involved.

Together with our campus partners, we are enhancing the Volunteer experience and leading with care. We are so pleased to share our impacts with you and we hope you enjoy reading these stories of growth and change.

LEADERSHIP KNOXVILLE SCHOLARS CELEBRATES A DECADE OF COMMUNITY INFLUENCE

One impactful Student Life program is celebrating ten years of leading students and building current and future world-changers.

Leadership Knoxville Scholars is a leadership development and community immersion program. It is very selective with each cohort only accepting 25 students. During their two years in the program, students experience one-on-one mentorship with community leaders who are themselves enrolled in the Leadership Knoxville program. Students complete two academic courses alongside their participation in the program; the first focuses on servant leadership and the social change model of leadership development, and the second focuses on professional competencies and civic engagement following graduation.

Every student in Leadership Knoxville Scholars completes a community action project with a small group. The purpose of these projects is to build a productive relationship with a community partner in which the scholars serve a specific set of needs aimed at creating positive change within the organization. Each student serves 60 hours with a partner over the course of two semesters. Last spring, seven community partners—including The Bottom, Knoxville Leadership 9

Foundation, Amachi Knoxville, and University Assisted Schools—were supported by Leadership Knoxville Scholars.

Madison Payne, a communication studies graduate, said, “The Leadership Knoxville Scholars program brought together individuals from different backgrounds, majors, and experiences. We learned that our differences are assets, and we must embrace diversity to create inclusive and

welcoming environments. This program taught us how to foster an environment of respect, understanding, and collaboration. Even if we don’t agree with each other on everything, we are always open to listening to each other’s perspectives.”

Students also participated in excursions to various areas of Knoxville, like Legacy Parks Foundation and Bush’s Baked Beans. Students were immersed in spaces where innovation and impact were the focus of the efforts of large teams. Twelve guest speakers from the Knoxville community also shared with the cohort class, imparting lessons in leadership, struggle, triumph, creativity, and values.

“The excursions showed us that Knoxville is so much more than just a college town, or a scruffy little city.

It is a city rich with culture, history, art, and a strong sense of community,” adds Payne.

Emily Morgan, who studied Appalachian community wealth development through the College Scholars program, noted that “whether or not this cohort realized it, we were building a home in Knoxville. The tenants of this program allowed us to understand how our city works from all angles. There was something to learn from every speaker and each excursion. Even in moments of disagreement, I was deeply thankful for my cohort mate’s critical perspective because it allowed me to love Knoxville even more fiercely than before because now I know how to make this place better.”

Participating in community service on the local level and receiving guidance from established community leaders has guided many Leadership Knoxville Scholars to their own path of impactful leadership in their various disciplines.

Currently, one graduate is pursuing a PhD in biomedical science at the Mayo Clinic and one graduate is pursuing a PhD at the University of Kentucky in psychology. Another graduate is attending the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and helping run Lynne Fugate’s campaign for the city council. One student is now a full-time staff member at The Bottom, a Knoxville non-profit the cohort visited that emphasizes the importance of safe spaces for marginalized communities.

Payne shared her final thoughts on the program during the spring’s closing ceremony, saying, “The Leadership Knoxville Scholars program has been a transformative experience for us all. It taught us valuable lessons in leadership, diversity and inclusion, community engagement, and the importance of ongoing learning and development.

We will carry these lessons with us for the rest of our lives and use them to make a positive impact in our community and beyond.”

The spring 2023 graduating cohort has a long list of accomplishments:

Two English Teaching Assistantship Fulbright Awards, with recipients impacting education in Taiwan and Czech Republic

Three Torchbearers and two Chancellor’s Honors Citations, one for extraordinary leadership and service and one for extraordinary community service

Four service medallion recipients who completed 100 hours or more of community service

Two top collegiate scholars who graduated with the highest GPAs in their college

Two Volunteers of Distinction who exhibited extraordinary academic achievement, professional promise, or excellence in research

RECORD NUMBER OF INTERNS HOSTED IN STUDENT LIFE, VOLS IN STUDENT AFFAIRS PROGRAM RELAUNCHED This summer, the Division of Student Life hosted six interns through the Vols in Student Affairs Program. Through the internship program, these students were able to explore various aspects of the student affairs field and consider whether pursuit of a career in this industry matches their aspirations and personal strengths.

“This is really an opportunity for students to get to know the student affairs field and how they might fit into this work,” says Chandra Myrick, associate vice chancellor for Student Life and one of the coordinators of the summer internship program.

During the summer, these students visited Tennessee Technological University, Vanderbilt University, and other neighboring campuses to learn about student affairs initiatives and impacts throughout Tennessee. They also participated in unique projects for each of the Student Life offices that served as hosts, working side-by-side with professionals in these spaces and learning about the rewards and challenges of their roles.

“It’s really cool to get to be in meetings and share my perspective as a student, and see how my voice impacts programming,” says Genesis Nolan, one of the Vols in Students Affairs participants.

“Seeing the ins-and-outs of how a program comes to life and being part of developing that for myself and my peers was a great experience that supported my growth.”

In addition to the summer cohort, Vols in Student Affairs offers programming throughout the academic year for current UT students who are interested in working in the field. Each year, this cohort program will include opportunities to network with student affairs professionals, workshops, and professional development that students in the program will complete together

to facilitate growth and discussion, as well as pair with an on-campus mentor who will meet regularly with their mentee. Students are matched with mentors in their areas of interest, like housing, basic needs, leadership, recreation, service, inclusive excellence, and more. Vols in Student Affairs is just one of several ways current UT students can pursue a career in higher education and student affairs. Many departments within Student Life offer internships, practicums, and graduate assistantships and the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences also houses one of the longest-running College Student Personnel graduate programs in the country. UT is a university on the rise and is producing the next generation of professionals and practitioners who will impact the college experience for future students.

“At the end of the day, we are shaping the future of higher education,” adds Myrick. “The Vols in Student Affairs program is all about developing these students into caring and strategic leaders who will tackle challenges facing the student affairs profession in the future.”

EMPOWERING THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF GREEK LIFE THROUGH CLIFTONSTRENGTHS

Hunter Carlheim Assistant Director, Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life Over the past five years, the sorority and fraternity community on Rocky Top has grown by 63.7%, from 4,304 members in spring 2018 to 7,045 members in spring 2023. This growth has created space for 27% of the total undergraduate population to be an active member of a chapter within that community. As the community has continued to grow, the need for more touch points with chapter officers has become

increasingly important for student leadership development, communication, collaboration, and empowerment.

With chapter presidents, council executive board members, and certain officers getting specialized training throughout the year, the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life (OSFL) took a step in the direction of creating programs and education that created a pipeline of inspired students who wanted to take on leadership roles or were seen as emerging leaders within their chapters. This mission gave way to the creation of the Future Greek Leaders program.

This program uses CliftonStrengths education to guide two targeted communities of students through different stages of leadership. The two communities are first-year and second-year chapter members who haven’t gotten involved and older chapter members who are no longer in leadership roles whose Since January 2020, 20,969 Vols have taken the CliftonStrengths organizational knowledge assessment, including 90% of this year’s first-year students. Taking the assessment allows students to understand and appreciate their strengths and those of their peers. The top 5 strengths represented across the entire student body are Restorative, Achiever, Competition, Adaptability, and Relator.

At strengths.utk.edu, students can access coaching sessions with UT Certified CliftonStrengths coaches and find academic courses and workshops where strengths-based learning is applied.

UT faculty, staff, and administrators can also take the assessment, identifying their natural talents in order to perform at their best and better support UT’s mission.

One hundred Future Greek Leaders (FGLs), which are first-year and second-year members of their chapters, are taught about their personalized strengths in a team setting designed to not only teach them the theory of strengths but also take them on a journey of team building challenges, in-depth

FALL RECRUITMENT discussions, and thought-provoking sessions to see how their strengths show up in action.

Focusing the discussion on how their team is made up of different strengths and motivations, the FGLs see how their strengths add to the overall diversity of a team to make it stronger. Greek Life community members who have previously held leadership positions serve as facilitators who lead a small group of FGLs. Small groups focus on reflecting on the team building activities and overall reflection on their role in the community. Small group facilitators make connections between activities, strengths, and how they connect to actual leadership examples they’ve seen as community leaders. As FGLs learn about their leadership styles and strengths, their facilitators are learning how their own strengths are skills they can transfer from being an active leader to a mentor within the community.

With two cohorts completed, OSFL continues to see these students take on leadership roles in our community, on campus, and off campus. As the community continues to grow, it is our goal that this pipeline of emerging leaders equipped with the knowledge of strengths, community values, and teamwork leaves the community better than they found it.

EXPANDS THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is changing the landscape in many fields, including education. But one effect of increased technology is a more inclusive campus experience for students with disabilities.

Meeting Increased Demand Through AI In the 2022–2023 academic year, Student Disability Services (SDS) saw a 21% increase in the number of newly registered students. Last year, in order to continue to meet student demand for services, SDS launched the use of Glean, an AI-driven, web-based note-taking platform. Glean not only empowers students in their courses but also teaches students how to take notes. In addition to SDS utilizing the peer note-taking model, this platform helps students learn and thrive on their own terms.

Peer notetakers are students enrolled at UT who are paid for their notes, either from classes they are already enrolled in or classes they attend in order to take notes for students registered with SDS who need accommodations. At UT, SDS boasts a 95% match rate for students who need note-taking accommodations and peer notetakers who can provide those notes. And while student needs are being met in this area, the demand is growing.

After implementing Glean on campus in the fall of 2022, SDS experienced an 85% reduction in the number of classes that needed to be covered by a peer notetaker, which means a greater number of students can be supported. Currently, SDS has 320 Glean licenses, and students can use a single license for all of their courses.

Building Skill and Confidence in Students “When some students arrive on campus, they’re still learning how to take notes,” says Griffin. “But notetaking is a lifelong skill students may need in their careers. When students are paired with a notetaker, they receive critical information from their courses, albeit from another student’s perspective.”

Through Glean, students can capture an audio

recording of their class sessions and then organize information by topic. Students can flag what is important or what they need to review, flag tasks to follow up on, add slides or pictures, and play back the recording during study sessions. Students can also create entire study guides, organize their notes by course or by date, and highlight or revise entries.

Glean also eliminates a slight delay students may experience, as student notetakers have 48 hours to upload their notes. And, if a peer notetaker misses something in class, it’s lost. But with Glean, students can replay class sessions to identify key information.

Through the Glean platform, students can carry notes with them from semester to semester. This allows them to build on their knowledge, especially in later classes related to their major or course of study. Students have a greater measure of control over their learning experience, determining what they need and how they need it to be delivered.

Renewed Vision for NCBI’s Relaunch Disruptions from COVID-19 continue to impact various programs and initiatives on campus, but one has been formally relaunched as of fall 2023 with renewed vision.

Hardeman-Ikem, who also serves as the UT campus director for NCBI, notes that the original facilitation team was passionate about continuing NCBI at UT and ready to get started.

UT became a campus affiliate of the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) in February 2020, just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. But with operations and staffing back to pre-pandemic levels, the facilitation-style trainings are now occurring on a regular basis again.

NCBI has developed an international network over the past 38 years, which includes delivering effective diversity programs on hundreds of college campuses and universities. NCBI focuses on identifying similarities among people and people groups and building relationships based on those similarities.

Through NCBI, participants are equipped with tools needed to advance inclusive excellence through conversations. Participants are intentionally trained with other peer leaders in order to support an ongoing institutional effort to combat racism and discrimination while also promoting the kind of atmosphere that includes both visible and invisible differences found in a workplace or community.

“People might wonder how to tackle difficult topics, build bridges with people who aren’t like themselves, or form deep relationships across other groups,” says HardemanIkem. “These and other inclusive practices are the kinds of tools participants leave NCBI with.”

“The initial pause for NCBI was due to COVID-19 and some staffing changes,” says Crystal Hardeman-Ikem, associate dean of students in the Division of Student Life. “But when we started considering a relaunch, it was a welcome surprise to find that most of the original facilitators were still available and already engaged in similar diversity-promoting work in their areas.”

At UT and other campus affiliates, NCBI consists of a representative crosssection of students, faculty, and staff who are trained to promote a more inclusive campus environment.

Participants in the team-led workshops acquire practical skills for shifting prejudicial attitudes and also learn how to become more effective allies for one another.

Moving forward, UT’s NCBI team plans to hold workshops each semester to promote a more equitable and diverse learning environment and workplace for all Vols. Four six-hour sessions are currently planned for the 2023–2024 academic year.

STUDENT EDUCATORS FACILITATE CAMPUS CONVERSATIONS Multicultural Student Life is excited to continue offering Kernel Convos, a film and discussion-type program. While the program was on hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, it returned last year to continue its tradition of impacting student conversations in an engaging and encouraging way.

Through Kernel Convos, students are invited to attend a showing of a representative film and participate in a facilitated conversation after viewing. Sometimes a content expert leads a question-andanswer session, and sometimes students are presented with an open forum after the film to share their takeaways in a large group setting.

The conversation can range from the significance of the movie to the importance of different types of storytelling, or other themes within the movie itself. But the events always invite students to engage open dialogue in an accessible, approachable way.

The conversations that are part of Kernel Convos are led by diversity educators, a group of student leaders passionate about building a welcoming community on Rocky Top. Diversity educators are firstyear or continuing students with at least one year of their academic career remaining. Selected through an application and interview process, diversity educators develop skills in public speaking, team building, and facilitation experience.

More than 200 UT students participated in facilitated conversations, with more than 1,900 students participating in facilitated conversations with diversity educators in the 2022–2023 academic year. Multicultural Student Life plans to host four films for Kernel Convos in partnership with the Pride Center.

TENNESSEE SATURDAY NIGHT WELCOMES STUDENTS TO THE VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

It’s the first Saturday night before your first year at UT. You’re nervous about finding your place on campus or maybe having a hard time adjusting to being away from your family for the first time. What are your plans? Will you doom scroll on your phone, alone in your room? Will you order takeout and stress about classes or making new friends?

Or will you have a blast with other students and with people who can help you navigate resources, find what you need to be your best at UT, and support you during your entire collegiate career?

Thousands of students chose the latter and spent their first Saturday night on campus, or back on campus for continuing students, with the Division of Student Life at Tennessee Saturday Night.

This premiere event was hosted across many rooms and spaces in the Student Union and introduced students to every department in the division amid a fun, energetic atmosphere with food, fun, and fireworks.

The Student Union is often referred to as the “campus living room,” with spaces where students meet friends, get food, engage with student organizations, and gather with others. It’s a community space and an event-hosting hub on campus.

“With this event, we wanted to create an atmosphere that echoes our commitment to mattering and belonging on campus,” said Frank Cuevas, vice chancellor for Student Life at UT. “From inflatable mini golf to canvas painting to airbrush tattoos to sensory experiences like making slime, every student could find an activity for them. Considering the diverse interests of our student body helps students find community.”

From dodgeball to bingo, students were able to create a tailored evening suited to their own personalities and interests, all while accessing information and meeting staff members from offices that aren’t always at the forefront of the student experience, like the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards and the Big Orange Tix team.

At check-in, students received a passport guide that listed the activities available and the office students could engage with at each station. Students received tickets for the activities they participated in and turned those tickets in for a chance to win prizes like a TV, a $500 gas card, a Nintendo Switch, and gift cards to the UT VolShop.

“We wanted students to leave that night knowing that Rocky Top is a vibrant campus community that cares and supports them,” adds Cuevas. “There is a place for every Vol and for what they love to do.”

STUDENT PRACTICUMS DEVELOP FUTURE PRACTITIONERS Through two departments, the Student Counseling Center and Student Conduct and Community Standards, students from multiple UT degree programs participate in experiential learning practicums that not only support their own personal growth but also support the greater student body’s access to services.

Student Counseling Center Currently, the Student Counseling Center is hosting 10 graduate students either at the master’s or doctoral level. These students are counseling trainees and the cohort is made up of students from both the Department of Psychology in UT’s College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Social Work.

Every member of this cohort provides one-onone counseling therapy to students in need of services, with one graduate assistant also offering couples therapy. Most practicums are one year in length, with some extending to a second year.

“By offering practicum experiences, we’re able to really broaden the scope of services the center can provide and ultimately serve more students,” says Jess Westcott, assistant director and director of training at the Student Counseling Center.

Last year’s cohort of 10 student trainees had an incredible impact on students. This class, most of whom have now graduated from the program, served 508 total students through 2,041 appointments. This amounted to 1,514 hours spent with student clients.

Students in the practicum program participate in professional training alongside the full-time staff and are able to learn what the environment is like in the psychology and counseling realm.

These students also receive supervision from one or more center staff members according to their educational background and professional goals.

“Supporting students as they identify strengths and areas that need improvement in their approaches to therapy is a key aspect of our training program,” says Westcott. “Together with their supervisor, the student trainees are able to assess what’s going well in their sessions together and which skills they need to develop further.”

Practicum students also complete outreach activities, like giving presentations to classes about managing stress or anxiety. More advanced trainees support the center’s group counseling efforts as observers, facilitators, or co-facilitators. Last year’s cohort spent 35 hours at outreach events throughout the year.

Another unique aspect of the practicum model at the center is that students are able to provide case management and care coordination to students who need longer-term care, supporting growth and well-being for students that extends beyond a short-term counseling relationship.

Some students also do brief assessments to help guide students to the most appropriate campus resources to meet their needs, which is a skill that quickly translates to the professional mental health landscape.

Student Conduct and Community Standards Student Conduct and Community Standards (SCCS) develops student integrity and accountability through an educational, consistent, and equitable conduct process centered on

student development. Staff take a restorative and empathetic approach and believe in the philosophy of doing the next right thing after a mistake has been made.

Although the office can issue disciplinary outcomes, most allegations of misconduct are resolved through an educational and developmental approach designed to promote learning and development. Student-centric recommendations help students learn and grow, ultimately developing appropriate decision-making skills as members of the Volunteer community.

Last year, 99% of students who engaged in the conduct process agreed with the outcomes recommended by SCCS staff and resolved their case through an informal pathway rather than a formal hearing.

“These students are not only supporting our team’s efforts but are developing critical skills for the marketplace,” says Samsel. “They’re meeting with students, parents, attorneys, and other stakeholders and developing skills like conflict management, motivational interviewing, and curriculum development.”

Graduate assistants, practicum students, and interns facilitate educational conferences with students in the conduct process, teach and help develop educational sanction courses, assist with assessment and data, and meet with students who are on disciplinary probation.

Director Amanda Samsel attributes part of this success to their work with graduate and practicum students. Over the past five years, the office has hosted 23 total graduate and practicum students from a wide range of programs at UT: the College of Law; the College of Social Work; and multiple programs through the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences, including the College Student Personnel program, the Counselor Education program, and the Instructional Technology program. Of these 23 students, 15 now work in higher education, including eight current University of Tennessee employees.

Shaun McComas, assistant director for Student Conduct and Community Standards, is also a licensed social worker, so students from the College of Social Work are able to earn clinical hours under his supervision.

Two award-winning sanction courses were developed by the SCCS student team alongside professional staff: VolsREACH, an ethical decision-making course, and VolsGROW, a digital class centered on human dignity and the role it plays in resolving conflict. Each year, around 150 students participate in an in-person VolsREACH class and hundreds complete unique educational sanctions each academic year.

“Graduate assistants, practicum students, and interns are given a robust experience in our office, and their involvement is integral to helping students grow and develop through the student conduct process,” adds Samsel.

Across the Division of Student Life, departments like Student Conduct and Community Standards and the Student Counseling Center are creating meaningful pathways for students from a multitude of degree programs to become career-ready while contributing to the division’s strategic priorities.

Cumulatively, these practicum students heard more than 2,000 cases over a five-year period.

The added support these students provide allows SCCS to remain more student-centric and meet with students in the conduct process quickly.

In the spring of 2023, Lindsay Davis, coordinator for Family Engagement in the Office of the Dean of Students, was honored with Student Life’s Community Service Award. This award recognizes someone who is actively engaged in the Knoxville community, regularly volunteering with local or national organizations, as well as local schools, churches, and more. Davis shares about her commitment to volunteering and what it means to her to be a Volunteer for Life.

Being recognized for my service in the Knoxville community caught me by surprise because serving my community has been second nature to me for as long as I can remember. As a Knoxville native, I have benefited from the investment of others and in turn have sought ways to give back to the community that has given so much to me. When I decided to return to Knoxville, it was important for me to find ways to involve myself in my community.

Being idle wasn’t an option for me; I knew my mother and mentors would expect me to share my time and talents outside of my work at UT. With so many ways to offer time and talents to the Knoxville community it can be hard sometimes to decide how to serve. For me, what’s important is identifying one passion and service related to that passion. It could be a one-time event or an ongoing commitment, but being passionate about the work you’re contributing to is important.

As a legacy Vol, I have witnessed my mother, VFL ‘95, serve our community graciously whether it was through our church, sorority, or personal interests. My mother modeled what it means to be a UT Volunteer long before I became one myself.

Oftentimes I find myself participating in service projects alongside her, whether it’s volunteering with our sorority sisters in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. or through our involvement with Girl Talk, Inc. My mom’s enthusiasm and commitment to these organizations inspired me to find a way to get connected in one of their many programs.

Serving as a career coach in the Life Prep Academy through Girl Talk Inc. has allowed me to invest in the lives of young women as they prepare for their next steps post-high school. I often credit my success and growth to my mentors and sponsors who took the time to pour into me. Because of them, I am empowered to share my wisdom, experiences, and resources with other young women. I have enjoyed serving in this capacity because it aligns my professional expertise with my personal interest in youth development and mentorship. I have the opportunity to support my mentee as she explores her post-secondary options by creating an action plan to meet her goals and deadlines.

Embodying the Volunteer Creed has empowered me to find ways outside of UT to bear the torch, impacting my community and paying forward the growth I’ve experienced because of others.

BIAS EDUCATION RESPONSE TEAM CHANGES TO CAMPUS CLIMATE TO BROADEN SCOPE One of the stated values of the Division of Student Life is inclusion. We value a community that respects all its members while working toward creating a sense of mattering and belonging. But what happens when that social fabric suffers a rip or tear when a Volunteer experiences something that makes them feel less than welcome?

Enter the Campus Climate Impact Committee.

The campus climate should affirm the dignity of all and encourage the exchange of ideas through discourse in every aspect of campus life.

Formerly UT’s Bias Education Response Team, this committee now has a broader scope and assists members of the university community affected by campus climate concerns through outreach, support, and education.

A campus climate concern is an action or incident, either intentional or unintentional, that may discriminate against, stereotype, exclude, or harm anyone in our community. Concerns may stem from fear, misunderstanding, hatred, or bias, and may affect one’s ability to learn and thrive on campus. Campus climate concerns could be anything from vandalism or damaging property to bigotry or racial slurs to bullying and ridiculing a person’s accent. And while the committee is not a disciplinary body, behavior that violates the Student Code of Conduct is referred to appropriate offices.

“Anytime there’s a campus climate concern, our goal is to provide student-focused and compassionate care on all sides of the situation,” says Ciara Gazaway, program director for inclusive

excellence in the Office of the Dean of Students.

“For many students, being on a college campus is their first experience interacting closely with people who come from backgrounds or have lifestyles different than their own. And sometimes it can be challenging to know how to engage others with respect. That’s where we come in to simply have a conversation with students on both sides to help them thrive in their relationships with other students on campus.”

One aspect of Gazaway’s role is ensuring students who report campus climate concerns feel comfortable attending class and persisting at UT. “At UT, students are learning and growing, developing potentials and skills they never knew existed in themselves,” says Byron Hughes, dean of students and assistant vice chancellor for Student Life. “They can’t reach their full potential if they don’t feel like they matter and belong on campus.”

Gazaway adds that the Campus Climate Impact Committee also provides educational workshops and presentations to campus groups or classes, and she hopes that having conversations with students will support not only their personal growth but campus community growth as well.

“At UT, students explore opportunities on campus that help them understand what belonging means, and how it impacts their community,” adds Hughes. “We all have a responsibility to welcome others, and this committee can help guide students in determining how to handle campus climate concerns when they arise.”

Housing is not only a basic need but also something in scarce supply nationwide, and students are experiencing this challenge in unique ways. University Housing and other departments are working to alleviate the stresses students experience throughout the housing process.

Whether students live on campus in residence halls or off campus, Student Life support is available for them.

A New Program Area This year, the division is launching a new program area, Off-Campus Student Life. Headed by program director Thomas Boleyn, efforts will focus on helping commuter students feel connected to campus and supporting their unique Volunteer experience.

An off-campus housing website is available to help students match with other students looking for roommates and locate properties that have listings for space available to students. Students can utilize this website to search for offcampus housing, compare rates, and connect with resources. An off-campus housing fair and educational programming have also been offered to provide helpful information for students and their families.

Last spring, Student Life launched a new competition to generate innovative ideas; winning proposals received financial support from privately endowed gifts given to support Student Life initiatives. Loosely based on the ABC hit Shark Tank, the Student Life Innovation Awards provided one-time funding for new and creative initiatives, programs, or services that supported the Student Life strategic plan.

Proposals were also limited to those that included at least two Student Life programs or departments, encouraging collaboration and anti-disciplinary solutions to student needs.

“We wanted proposals that required departments to collaborate with one another,” said Frank Cuevas, vice chancellor of Student Life.

“Each proposal had a lead, but partnering with others across the division was key. Every Student Life department supports all four of our strategic priorities of providing transformative experiences, a culture of inclusivity and care, personal and professional growth, and responsible and effective stewardship.” After rounds of written proposals and presentations, three proposals were funded.

Motivational Interviewing Training for Staff

The Student Counseling Center, the Center for Care and Resilience, and the Center for Health Education and Wellness proposed funding for motivational interviewing training for staff.

Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based approach to behavior change that helps people who are ambivalent about a decision or area of their life. It prioritizes nonjudgmental and compassionate care, recognizing that people have within themselves the resources and skills for change.

In February 2023, staff in the three centers plus eight additional UT departments and units completed training to lead students through personal growth and learning through effective communication skills. Anticipated outcomes of this training are that students will have a higher

satisfaction with changes they implement that originate within themselves; longer-lasting behavior change because their own personal values are considered in motivational interviewing; and empowerment to make changes they need to make.

Train-the-Trainer Alcohol Skills Training Program*

The Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life and the Center for Health Education and Wellness requested funding for a train-the-trainer, evidence based workshop through which participants will enhance their knowledge and effectiveness in discussing alcohol with students and learn how to facilitate conversations with students to reduce harm around alcohol use.

These trainers will use motivational enhancement strategies to prompt change in students and help those students who do choose to drink do so in less dangerous ways, thus reducing the likelihood of experiencing unwanted consequences. Student outcomes will include increased knowledge of how consuming alcohol increases risk, an increase in student behaviors that reduce risk, and decreases in both overall consumption and negative consequences from drinking.

Basic Needs Vending Machines

This year, from January 1 to September 15, Basic Needs in the Office of the Dean of Students welcomed more than 17,045 visitors through the Big Orange Pantry. This fall, a basic needs vending machine was placed on campus as a result of this proposal’s funding.

The refrigerated machine was installed in the TRECS facility on September 21 and will include shelf-stable and refrigerated food items as well as basic hygiene items like toothpaste and deodorant, KAT bus passes, and well-being kits provided by other Student Life departments to support mental health on campus. The vending machine is also dynamic in the size and number of slots available.

“Our numbers speak for themselves: our students are passionate about engaging with diverse identities, intentional community-building, and inclusive leadership development now more than ever,” says Bonnie Johnson, director of the Pride Center.

In addition to partnering with more than 20 units on and off campus to provide more inclusive and culturally responsive support programming, the center also supported 33 total Safe Zone at UT sessions, an educational workshop that focuses on terminology, awareness, and understanding of the issues related to the LGBTQ+ community on campus. Safe Zone at UT sessions are facilitated by faculty, staff, or graduate students, and this year’s sessions were led by 15 different facilitators, an all-time high for any single academic year.

Pride Center staff also conducted a focus group with graduate students to identify the specific needs of this student population, including programming, fiscal support, and more. In the 2022-2023 academic year, the center added a staff coordinator position.

The student mentoring program saw the largest cohorts of mentors and mentees yet, with 43 total participants. And finally, the Pride Center community space in the Student Union had record space utilization with 14,950 total visitors in 2022– 2023 compared to 9,474 total visitors in 2021–2022.

“As an alumna of UT and the Pride Center myself, it thrills me that our center’s capacity is expanding to meet the growing needs of the Volunteer community from faculty to staff to students of all degree levels,” adds Johnson. “We are excited about supporting more students as they explore themselves and their futures here on Rocky Top, and we look forward to even more utilization of our services, affinity space, and programming.”

GRANT CREATES STUDENT HEALTH CENTER IMPROVEMENTS

UT’s Student Health Center continues to work to minimize the burden of illness on the student body. During the 2022–2023 academic year, 32% of students, roughly one-third of the student body, were provided healthcare or triage services by staff at the Student Health Center. The center, located in the heart of campus and close to several residence halls and Greek housing, includes several clinics and a recently-established community health team.

This team leverages evidence-based strategies

to reduce the impact of illness on student success by facilitating layered prevention behaviors, understanding campus disease patterns, and advancing community resilience to public health emergencies.

Thanks to a $500,000 grant and other partnerships from the Tennessee Department of Health, the Student Health Center was able to make technological upgrades that support innovative health promotion programming. The center was also able to purchase equipment to expand the capacity of the in-house laboratory to support students’ diagnostic needs. Further, the grant helped fund free testing for many infectious diseases and secure access to free flu vaccines for students.
