The Inventor Who Gave Electricity Its Language This Jan. 17 marks the 320th birthday of Benjamin Franklin.

Born in Boston, Franklin is one of America’s most celebrated scientists, inventors and thinkers. Although he did not discover electricity, his experiments were crucial in shaping our understanding of its properties and laid the groundwork for many modern electrical concepts.

In the early 18th century, electricity fascinated scientists, yet little was known about its true nature. Researchers in Europe were conducting experiments, but they lacked consistent terminology to share findings effectively. As Franklin began his own investigations—especially with Leyden jars—he introduced terms such as positive and negative charge, battery, conductor and insulator. Many of these words remain fundamental to electrical science today. By providing a common vocabulary, Franklin helped unify and advance the study of electricity.

A Leyden jar stores electric charge between conductors on the inside and outside of a glass container. Although it had been invented in Europe in the mid-1700s, Franklin explored new ways of charging Leyden jars by connecting them. In a 1749 letter describing his research, he called this arrangement an “electrical battery,” comparing it to a military battery. This was the first recorded use of the term battery in an electrical context.

Franklin’s most famous electrical experiment was his 1752 kite experiment, which demonstrated lightning is a form of electricity. To test his hypothesis, he flew a kite topped with metal wire during a thunderstorm. Attached to the lower part of the kite string were a hemp cord and metal key. When the storm clouds charged the damp string with ambient electricity—the kite was not struck by lightning, contrary to popular belief—Franklin brought his finger near the key. The negative charges in the key were attracted to the positive charges in his hand, producing a spark. Using a Leyden jar, he was then able to “collect electric fire very copiously,” as it was reported.

This insight led Franklin to perfect his development of the lightning rod—a metal rod placed on buildings to attract electrical charges and safely direct them into the ground.

The lightning rod became one of the earliest technologies to apply electrical knowledge for public safety, dramatically reducing fires in homes, ships and public buildings. It remains a critical feature of modern architecture.

Franklin also proposed the single-fluid theory of electricity, suggesting electrical charge resulted from an imbalance of a single electrical fluid. Although later discoveries revealed this imbalance was due to a surplus or deficit of electrons, Franklin’s ideas provided an essential foundation for future scientific progress.

Franklin’s curiosity, experimental skill, practical insights and gift for explaining complex ideas transformed the world’s understanding of electricity. His letters and reports circulated widely throughout Europe and America, influencing leading scientists and spreading knowledge far beyond academic circles. Among his many achievements, Franklin’s contributions to the study of electricity remain deeply significant today.

The late Nelson Mandela’s words still have the power to needle the conscience and call us to a higher purpose: serving the most vulnerable among us with loving intention and benevolence. Like clay, children are pliant and rely upon caring hands to nourish and shape them into healthy, confident adults.

There is something especially fitting about a group of Pee Dee potters molding and firing vessels to help feed the children of our community.

The Pottery Collective is a group of four ceramicists—Peggy Brown, Sasha Federer, Doug Gray and Lisa Pike—who are donating handcrafted works as part of an effort to feed area schoolchildren.

They host Empty Bowls 4 Kids, this year from 6:30-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Florence. For a $60 donation, attendees can sit down

Equal Opportunity Hunger If you think hunger is something that happens to other people, you might be underestimating the power of catastrophe to level the playing field. It was a harsh truth for Julia Boyd Jackson and her family, who regularly helped pack grocery bags for Help 4 Kids.

“We spent several Mondays over the years packing bags,” Julia says. “Our family continued to support Help 4 Kids through the Boy Scouts Troop 476 and on Saturdays with our St. Luke family.”

Then, the pandemic came to town.

“I was working as an ER nurse at night, and my husband’s work as a physical therapist assistant came to a halt,” Julia says. “School was shut down for all four of my children. We were now living on one income, and things quickly got hard.”

Twice a day, her husband, David, headed to the local elementary school to secure the free breakfast and lunch. The family soon found themselves on the receiving end of the Help 4 Kids program they supported as volunteers.

“We were so thankful to receive the food bags each week,” Julia says. “Fortunately, it JA N UA RY 2 0 2 6

was only a short season that we needed the help. But for those who have not known hunger, may the Lord’s face continue to shine upon you.”

Empty Pots: Filling a Need Real hunger affects real people in the community, and Peggy faced it daily in her work at Clay Pot. Following the biblical directive to “Feed my people,” she served free coffee and food to unhoused people who entered the cafe seeking sustenance.

There were two conditions: They were not to ask customers for money or show up intoxicated.

Though the community impact of her kindness could not be measured, the 2024 Empty Bowls 4 Kids effort delivered quantifiable results: Nearly $9,000 was raised, enough to feed 44 food-insecure children in Florence County for a year.

Joining the Potters Collective this year is Francis Marion University ceramics professor Doug Gray, who has participated in similar events in Texas and Arizona.

“I was happy to donate bowls for a local event,” he says. “Empty Bowls events are held across the nation and around the world to help combat food insecurity. It’s a great cause, and I am happy it will help raise money to feed kids and young adults in our area schools.”

Also joining the cause is Lisa Pike, who teaches biology at FMU. A few years ago, she began taking classes from Doug and other faculty to develop her pottery skills. The art form engaged her on both a creative and scientific level and was so enjoyable that she and her partner set up a small studio in their backyard.

“I am pretty humbled to have been asked to contribute to the Empty Bowls 4 Kids fundraiser, as I know I am not as skilled as Doug, Sasha or Peggy,” Lisa says.

“I stopped doing pottery for several years when I had a young child, but getting back into it the past few years has been fun.”

Her daughter, Lucie, became involved with Help 4 Kids as a student at the Montessori School of Florence. Packing food for the weekend for students who did not have enough to eat at home served as an important life lesson.

“Lucie learned that not all kids were as lucky as she,” Lisa says. “I think that was eye-opening for her, and it helped her develop empathy and a helping mindset.

Some of the courses I teach talk about food insecurity, which started discussions at home, and our family travels have had an impact on her view of the world, too.

“It’s crazy that we live in a world with billionaires and yet have children going hungry.”

Contributions Add Up The kind of society we aspire to build

seems to be a weighty consideration these days. But if healthy, well-nourished children are a positive reflection of the societies in which they live, their wellbeing is likewise a testament to those who choose to move through this world with compassion and empathy.

Whether that inspires someone to donate to a food drive, spend hours packing canned goods into bags or part with $60 for a soup-and-sandwich dinner so vulnerable children have enough to eat, each good intention contributes to the collective push toward a more benevolent society.

Just as the empty bowl can be a metaphor for hunger, the filled bag can mean something else, too.

“For all of you in the community and those of you who prepare these food bags, please pray for the families who receive them and see them as something more,” Julia says. “To them, these aren’t just bags of food. These are bags of blessings.”  JA N UA RY 2 0 2 6

A historic caboose sits behind Dillon County Museum on Museum Square off Main Street in Latta, serving as a tribute to the town’s railroad heritage. Latta was established in 1888 as a freight station for Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, a line that ran between Wilson, North Carolina, and what is now Florence, South Carolina. The town was named after Robert J. Latta, a railroad surveyor who designed the street plan for the new community. The railroad enabled farmers to transport goods while a major tobacco market was established in town. The caboose contains artifacts from the railroad era. It was restored by the Latta Revitalization Commission and residents Lafon and Cindy LeGette.

Spotlight on a Nightshade This purple vegetable shines in a duo of Italian dishes Story and photos by Libby Wiersema I just love aubergine. No, this is not a declaration of affection for some dreamy French paramour or new shade of crayon.

Rather, it is an expression of my affinity for eggplant, aka aubergine, brinja or baigan, depending on where you live.

While “eggplant” does not sound nearly as exotic, the name initially reflected the small, white cultivars that resembled eggs. The most common variety sold by local grocers is distinctive for its smooth purplish skin and bulbous shape.

Eggplant is one of those ambiguous foods we call a vegetable even though it is botanically a fruit that grows from a flower and contains seeds. It belongs to the nightshade group of plants that includes common fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, potatoes, okra and peppers, as well as tobacco and the toxic belladonna.

eggplant. There are also those who have never ventured a taste, either because they view it with suspicion or have never been offered an eggplant dish.

I grew up in a Sicilian home where eggplant routinely graced the table.

That brings us to the Italian name for this versatile vegetable: melanzana (pronounced mel-ahn-ZAH-nah).

Mama often made melanzana alla pecorino—a chunky mix of baked eggplant, tomato, onion, garlic, basil and pecorino cheese. I could walk into the house and know immediately what we were having for dinner.

I was also a fan of her eggplant Parmesan, as well as a basic eggplant sandwich. Mama would fry thick slices of eggplant, season them with a little salt and pepper, then slap them on Italian bread with a sprinkle of pecorino—so simple, filling and good.

As an adult, my food explorations

introduced me to the wonders of moussaka, baba ghanoush, Chinese garlic eggplant and ratatouille. In fact, I have never met an eggplant dish I did not love.

On the following page are two recipes sure to thrill fellow eggplant lovers as well as the eggplant curious. These dishes are infused with rich, warm flavors—just perfect for this time of year.

Be sure to choose an eggplant that is firm and heavy with smooth, lustrous skin devoid of spots and flaws. Some people prefer to peel it before cooking. I think the skin is the best part and always leave it intact.

Eggplant Pecorino Enjoy this cheesy twist on a traditional dish when you substitute tangy pecorino Romano for its nutty cousin, ParmesanReggiano. Adapted from a recipe by America’s Test Kitchen.

2 tablespoons butter ¼ cup onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon anchovy paste or 2 anchovy fillets, minced ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes ¼ teaspoon dried oregano Pinch of salt Pinch of pepper 24-ounce bottle passata (tomato puree found in the Italian section of the grocery store) 14-ounce can diced tomatoes ½ teaspoon sugar ¼ cup fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 medium-sized eggplant 4 eggs 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup olive oil 2 cups grated pecorino Romano cheese 2 cups fontina or mozzarella cheese, shredded

Gather your finest Italian ingredients for amazing eggplant dishes.

To make sauce: Melt butter in saucepan over medium-low heat.

Add onion, garlic, anchovy paste, pepper flakes, oregano and a pinch of salt and pepper. When onion is soft, add passata, tomatoes and sugar. Reduce heat. Simmer until thickened, 5 to 8 minutes. Stir in basil and olive oil. Set aside.

To make eggplant: Line a baking sheet with paper towels.

Cut stem off eggplant. Lengthwise, cut a slice from one side of each eggplant. Turn eggplant onto the flat side to prevent rolling as you cut it into ¼-inch slices, lengthwise. Crack eggs into a shallow dish, and whisk. Measure flour into a second shallow dish. Heat olive oil in a large skillet until it begins to shimmer. Working in batches, coat eggplant slices in flour, shake off excess, then dip into egg. Allow excess to drip off, then lay slices in hot oil. When lightly browned on each side, transfer to baking sheet.

To assemble, ladle a thin layer of sauce into the bottom of a 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Add one layer of eggplant slices, sprinkle each slice with pecorino Romano, then repeat. Cover the top layer with remaining sauce and cheeses.

Heat oven to 375 F. Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes or until bubbly and brown. Let cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Caponata This tangy Sicilian eggplant relish is delicious served on sliced Italian bread or crackers, and tastes even better the next day.

2 eggplants, cut into ½-inch cubes 2 tablespoons olive oil Pinch of salt 1 cup chopped onion 3 stalks celery, sliced ½ cup sweet peppers, chopped (red, yellow, orange or a mix) ¾ cup pitted Castelvetrano and/or Kalamata olives, sliced 2 tablespoons capers 2 cups passata, or an equal mix of passata and diced tomatoes 5 tablespoons balsamic vinegar Pinch of sugar 2 tablespoons fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced Fresh ground pepper and salt, to taste

Heat oven to 375 F. Toss eggplant cubes with olive oil and a sprinkle of salt, then roast on a baking sheet for about 20 minutes or until cubes are lightly browned. In a deep skillet over medium heat, saute onion, celery and peppers until softened. Add eggplant, capers, olives and passata or tomatoes.

Cover and simmer over medium-low for 8 minutes, stirring to prevent any sticking. Add vinegar, sugar and basil. Adjust salt and pepper, to taste.

Earlier this year, a historic geomagnetic storm created a disco party in the sky that was visible as far south as Florida. In South Carolina, night owls were treated to raspberry-pink skies streaked with yellow and blue waves. What caused Mother Nature’s grandest light show?

It starts with solar flares on the sun. Flares are caused when the sun’s magnetic fields tangle and eventually snap like rubber bands.

These massive bursts of radiation release photons, or light, at almost every wavelength on the color spectrum.

The photons released by solar flares move through space on solar winds, where they can travel a leisurely 95 million miles in eight seconds. Most particles fly off into space, but some are magnetically attracted to the Earth’s poles and penetrate our atmosphere.

When photon particles run into other electrons and atoms in Earth’s atmosphere, they create the bursts of light we know as the aurora borealis, or northern lights. When the lights come from the southern hemisphere, it’s called the aurora australis.

Wavy patterns in the colored lights are caused by fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field, and different colors are created by photons colliding with other gases. For example, photons colliding with oxygen give off a green color, while purple, pink and blue are caused by photons colliding with nitrogen. If you ever see a rare red aurora, it’s because photons are colliding with high-altitude oxygen.

Seeing the aurora is a common bucket

list item. However, finding yourself in the right place at the right time can be a rare and magical experience.

Typically, the best place to see the aurora is Tromso, Norway, just a short 4,200-mile hop from Marlboro and Dillon counties. Sweden, Iceland, Norway and Greenland are also popular with aurorachasers. Closer to home, but not much, Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territories is a good bet from August through April.

Don’t pack a bag just yet though. You may be able to see the northern lights from your backyard every decade or so. The sun has an 11-year cycle in which it flips its north and south poles. That can create massive geomagnetic storms, such as the one we saw in May, that send waves of photons into space and toward Earth.

It’s not unusual for the aurora to be seen much farther south than usual during these times. If you slept through this year’s light show, mark your calendar for 2035, brew a strong pot of coffee and camp out in the darkest place you can find.

The Space Weather Prediction Center has an aurora forecast website that predicts locations and intensity levels of auroras, and it never hurts to keep an eye out for rare events. One thing’s for sure: Whether you’re chasing auroras across the frozen tundra or simply marveling at their majesty from the comfort of your backyard, the aurora borealis is nature’s way of reminding us that the universe is full of surprises. 

Through Operation Christmas Child

MPD Electric Cooperative employees, with the support of MPD members, came together this season to make a meaningful impact through Operation Christmas Child, a global outreach of Samaritan’s Purse.

The program “delivers great joy and the Good News of Jesus Christ to children in need around the world through giftfilled shoeboxes,” according to Samaritan’s Purse. For many recipients, these shoeboxes are the first gift they have ever received, offering a tangible reminder they are loved and not forgotten.

Working side by side, MPD employees and members collected toys, hygiene items and school supplies, packing more than 60 shoeboxes with care and compassion.

Samaritan’s Purse extends heartfelt thanks to all who join in its mission—whether through packing shoeboxes, supporting disaster relief, participating in medical missions or giving in various ways. The organization’s work is inspired by the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30–37), a reminder of the call to help those in desperate need.

Since 1970, the organization has sought to aid the poor, sick and suffering while sharing messages of hope.

As evangelist Franklin Graham said, “God has called us to go into the world to care for those that are suffering. It’s just what we do. We run to the fire. We don’t run away from it.”

Heat oven to 350 F. Lightly coat a standard 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick spray.

Divide the spinach, red bell pepper, green bell pepper and tomatoes among the cups.

They will be about two-thirds full.

In a large bowl or large measuring cup with a spout, briskly whisk together eggs, egg whites, salt, basil, oregano and pepper until well combined. Carefully fill each muffin cup three-quarters of the way to the top with the egg mixture. Sprinkle the feta evenly over the tops of the cups.

Bake for 24-28 minutes, until the egg muffins are set. Cool for a few minutes, then run a butter knife around the edges of each muffin to loosen. Remove them from the pan and enjoy immediately, or cool on a wire rack and refrigerate or freeze for later.

Breakfast Smoothie 1 medium frozen banana 1 cup frozen strawberries 2 tablespoons rolled oats ¼ cup vanilla protein powder

1 tablespoon all-natural creamy peanut butter 1 cup plain unsweetened almond milk

Place everything into a high-speed blender. Blend on high, stopping to scrape the sides as needed, until smooth.

Breakfast Burritos

8 large whole-wheat tortillas 1 pound ground pork 1 teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon black pepper ½ teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon onion powder

1 medium red bell pepper, diced 8 eggs, beaten 2 cups spinach leaves, chopped 4 ounces grated cheddar

Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground pork and seasonings, crumbling the meat.

Add the bell pepper. Stir until pork is cooked through and peppers are soft. Drain any excess grease, and set aside to cool slightly.

Wipe the skillet clean, and heat over medium heat.

Add eggs and spinach. Cook until eggs are set and no longer runny. Let cool slightly.

Assemble the burritos by placing equal amounts of sausage and egg mixtures onto each tortilla. Sprinkle 1-2 tablespoons of cheddar on top.

Folding in the ends, roll the burritos tightly, and place seam side down on a large baking sheet. Place in freezer.

Once frozen, place burritos in a large freezer bag.

To serve, remove the burritos from the freezer, and place on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave for 3-4 minutes.

Burritos can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Overnight Oats

1⁄3 cup muesli, or 1⁄3 cup old-fashioned oats plus ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon almond butter or peanut butter

1 tablespoon chia seeds ½ to 2⁄3 cup milk of choice ½ cup fruit Drizzle of maple syrup or honey

In a jar or bowl, combine the muesli (or oats and cinnamon), nut butter and chia seeds. Add a splash of milk.

Mix the nut butter into the muesli. Add the rest of the milk, and stir to combine. Put mixture into a Mason jar.

Top with fruit. If you used more than ½ cup milk and want the fruit to stay on top, wait to top the oats until ready to serve. If using fruit that doesn’t store well, such as sliced apple or banana, wait to top the oats until ready to serve.

Close the jar’s lid, and refrigerate overnight or up to 5 days. When ready to serve, add a drizzle of maple syrup or honey. Enjoy chilled.

Healthy Pumpkin Muffins 1⁄3 cup melted coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil ½ cup maple syrup or honey 2 eggs, at room temperature 1 cup pumpkin puree ¼ cup milk of choice 2 teaspoons pumpkin spice blend 1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon salt 1¾ cups whole wheat flour 1⁄3 cup old-fashioned oats, plus more for sprinkling on top 2 teaspoons turbinado sugar, optional

Heat oven to 325 F. Grease a 12-cup muffin tin with butter or nonstick cooking spray.

In a large bowl, beat together oil and maple syrup or honey with a whisk. Add the eggs, and beat well. Add the pumpkin puree, milk, pumpkin spice blend, baking soda, vanilla extract and salt.

Add the flour and oats to the bowl. Mix with a large spoon, until just combined.

Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups. Sprinkle the tops of the muffins with about a tablespoon of oats and a sprinkle of turbinado sugar and/or pumpkin spice blend. Bake muffins for 22-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into a muffin comes out clean.

Place the muffin tin on a cooling rack to cool. The muffins will keep at room temperature for up to two days, or in the refrigerator for up to four days. They keep well in the freezer in a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.

Sweet Potato Hash

1 tablespoon olive oil 2 medium-sized sweet potatoes, diced 1 tablespoon chili powder, divided 1 teaspoon salt, divided 1 pound ground chicken or turkey 1 each red, green and yellow bell pepper, diced

1 medium-sized red onion, diced ½ teaspoon pepper 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 2 teaspoons fennel seeds 2 teaspoons smoked paprika 2 teaspoons onion powder 1 cup chopped kale

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sweet potatoes, half of chili powder and ½ teaspoon salt.

Saute for 15-20 minutes until softened, stirring occasionally.

Once sweet potatoes have cooked for 15 minutes, add ground meat to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon and cooking for 3-4 minutes until browned.

Add bell peppers, onions, remaining chili powder, remaining salt, pepper, garlic, mustard, fennel, paprika and onion powder. Cook another 5 minutes. Stir in kale. Remove from heat, then divide among four bowls.

Refrigerate leftovers up to 5 days.

The morning was chilly with a slight drizzle, a bit cold for late spring in South Carolina. But the weather didn’t deter Beth Renwick, Cathy Bagley and Shawna McCardle from tackling the 10-plus miles of the Peak to Prosperity Trail, about an hour outside Columbia. The trio trekked the 10.7 miles to prepare for the 21-mile hike in California for CureSearch for Children’s Cancer.

It’s common to see hikers and joggers, some with dogs, tackling the Peak to Prosperity Trail. It’s the most popular stretch of the Palmetto Trail, a statewide hiking route spanning more than 400 miles from the coast to the mountains. Once completed, the Palmetto Trail will be a continuous 500 miles, one of only 16 crossstate trails in the country.

“It’s a mixture of easements across the state,” says Furman Miller, a regional coordinator for the Midlands 167 miles of the trail.

The Palmetto Trail is open every day of the year to hikers and backpackers. Bikers and horses are allowed in a few areas, but

motorized vehicles are not. Campsites are scattered throughout the state with free access, although sites inside national forests must have permits.

“Don’t call the Palmetto Trail office and complain you can’t camp somewhere,” Furman says. “If we had our druthers, we could camp everywhere.”

The overall goal is to make the trail accessible to everyone.

“This is South Carolina’s trail,” Furman says. “It’s our gift to South Carolina. It’s an absolutely gorgeous state because we have so many natural wonders and historic sites.

We have a wide offering of environments, and our trail goes through all of it.”

How It All Started The Palmetto Conservation Foundation, a small nonprofit based in Columbia, was established in 1989 “to encourage and inspire active, outdoor recreation, land conservation and preservation of historical and cultural landmarks.” In 1994, the foundation created the Palmetto Trail with hopes of a continuous trek from Walhalla

in the Blue Ridge Mountains to Awendaw on the coast. Even though the trail has yet to be completed, it’s already the longest pedestrian and bicycle trail in the state.

To establish the Palmetto Trail, the foundation sought easements on private and public lands, including miles of national forest.

“The state utilities were all in,” Furman says of the initial trail creation. “You had a lot of areas that were natural partners.”

Other sections of the trail hug historic sites such as Revolutionary War battlefields, follow ancient Native American paths and involve government properties, such as the 16 miles by Fort Jackson. To date, the federally designated Millennium Legacy Trail includes three urban passages where through-hikers may pause and enjoy a meal and hotels in Newberry, Columbia and Spartanburg.

The Capital City Passage in Columbia runs along the banks of the Congaree River.

In several instances, landowners gave permission for use of their land, some with restrictions.

“You might have to hike along the property lines,” Furman says. “But our idea is you’re not hiking in a hurry, so you don’t mind going around a field.”

Rails to Trails The easiest sections of the trail to create were rails to trails conversions, where old train tracks and bridge trestles became hiking paths.

“Rails to trail are notoriously flat, so that’s a nice flat trail,” Furman says, adding that some are ideal for strollers and wheelchairs.

It’s one of the reasons the Peak to Prosperity Trail is the most popular part of the statewide program. Another is its relative proximity to urban centers.

The Peak to Prosperity Passage begins at the Alston trailhead in Fairfield County and crosses the Broad River on an old Norfolk Southern Railroad trestle. The trailhead offers picnic tables, five camping sites, firepits and a canoe put-in spot on the river. The other side parallels the small town of Peak in Newberry County.

It’s easy to spot nesting bald eagles, otters and turtles along the trestle hike, plus informative markers that tell the story of the town’s Dr. C.A. Pinner Sr., who traversed the 1,100-foot-long trestle by foot to reach patients in nearby counties.

The trail heads to Pomeria through a piedmont forest and includes 20 more trail trestles over 11 miles of Crims Creek.

Many hikers start at Alston, travel 1 mile to the next trestle and back again for an easy day hike, Furman says.

The Peak to Prosperity Passage is one example of gaps needed to fill to complete the statewide trail. A 5-mile gap exists just before reaching the town of Prosperity.

“When finished, folks can continue the railbed all the way into town,” Furman says.

It Takes a Village Hiking is part of Furman’s DNA. He trekked in New Mexico with the Boy Scouts in 2004 and hiked the Appalachian Trail. When he read about the Palmetto Trail, he emailed the foundation and began work cutting trails and putting railings

be collected, but for the most part, hikers keep the trails clean and volunteers patrol the passages to keep them safe.

“Most of the people on the trails are enjoying the outdoors,” Furman says, adding that those who do rarely cause problems. “They appreciate nature and appreciate what South Carolina has to offer.”

What’s Next?

Most of the Palmetto Trail is finished, with only small 5-mile and 7-mile gaps to complete.

“We’re getting really close to finishing,” Furman says. “All the low-hanging fruit is done, but we’re getting to the hard stuff now. Most are doable but complicated. But we’re really, really close.”

Fundraising events continue, such as a 5K and 10K race and the half-mile race in the Midlands and a Trail to Table chef ’s dinner served on the Peak to Prosperity trestle.

Furman offers guided hikes as well.

“We’re constantly trying to make people aware of the trail and get people out on the trail,” he says. 

If You Go

Hikers can reach the Palmetto Trail in about two hours from anywhere in South Carolina.

The environment is relatively easy to walk from the Low Country toward Columbia. Elevation increases in the Midlands and rolls upward through the Appalachian Mountains upstate.

The latter is not for the faint of heart.

“It is gorgeous territory, but it’s strenuous,” Furman says.

Leashed dogs are allowed on the Palmetto Trail.

on train trestles. He and fellow volunteer Charles Weber opened the first 6.5 miles of the Peak to Prosperity Passage after they cleared and decked eight trestles. Funding for the work came from a South Carolina Parks, Recreation and Tourism grant.

“I enjoyed it so much I was hired,” Furman says.

Furman oversees a large area of trail creation and maintenance as well as a host of volunteers and AmeriCorps workers, all of whom are necessary to the trail’s success. For instance, a group of volunteers arrive at the Peak to Prosperity Passage on Tuesday mornings to spend a half day working the trail. AmeriCorps workers spend six months building trails, removing invasive species and learning wilderness first aid, among other tasks.

“The bulk of the work is done by a few people,” Furman says. “We’re out there on the trails all the time. We’re willing to say that our trails are safe.”

Sacred Spaces

South Carolina’s historic churches are icons of the state’s rich heritage, architectural significance and culture. From Charleston’s stately spires to remote country chapels, these sacred spaces tell compelling stories of faith, community and perseverance across three centuries of American history.

These historic churches also serve as repositories of decorative arts, from hand-carved pulpits to memorial stained glass. Their archives often contain valuable historical documents, including early church records that provide crucial genealogical information and insights into colonial and antebellum life.

Charleston, nicknamed the “Holy City” for its many church steeples punctuating the skyline, is an ideal starting point for exploring South Carolina’s renowned religious architecture.

St. Michael’s Anglican Church, built between 1751 and 1761 at the corner of Broad and Meeting streets, is one of America’s finest examples of colonial religious architecture.

The church’s towering white steeple, visible from much of the peninsula, has guided sailors into Charleston Harbor for more than 250 years. It survived the Revolutionary and Civil wars, with its original English bells, colonial-era pews and historic organ intact.

In addition to other famous visitors, George Washington sat in pew number 43 for a service in 1791. The churchyard contains graves of historical figures, including two signers of the Constitution.

Just a few blocks away stands St. Philip’s Church, whose graceful steeple and portico have become synonymous with Charleston’s historic Church Street. The original building—inspired by St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields in London—burned in 1835, and the current building was completed in 1838. Its cemetery predates the structure and holds the remains of numerous notable South Carolinians, including statesman John C. Calhoun.

The Circular Congregational Church in Charleston presents a unique architectural vision. Founded in 1681 as a dissenting or Protestant church, the original structure was a meeting house, which was eventually replaced by a second and third structure, a large circular hall built in 1804.

The church’s cemetery is the oldest in Charleston, with graves dating to the 1690s, offering a remarkable chronicle of the city’s earliest European settlers.

Venturing about 20 miles north of Charleston to near Cainhoy, Ebenezer Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church—locally known as Old Brick Church—represents one of the oldest surviving churches in South Carolina.

Built in 1788, this simple yet elegant brick structure replaced a wooden church from the 1770s. Despite its remote location, the church served as a vital center of life for Presbyterian settlers from Ireland and Scotland and enslaved African Americans throughout the 19th century. Today, its weathered walls and peaceful grounds provide a haunting glimpse into rural colonial life.

Further south in the Lowcountry, several historic churches reflect the region’s distinctive Gullah Geechee heritage. Brick Baptist Church on St. Helena Island, built by enslaved people in 1855, became an important center became an important center for African American students and community life during and after the Civil War. Penn Center, one of the first schools for formerly enslaved people in the South, held many of its early classes in the church.

The English Gothic Revival style—designed by Edward Brickell White, who designed the steeple of St. Phillip’s in Charleston—found expression in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia, completed in 1847. Its soaring spire and intricate stonework demonstrate the

In 1865, because the congregation removed the Episcopal icons and replaced them with papier mache crosses, the church survived Sherman’s burning of Columbia.

Prince George Winyah Parish Church in Georgetown, completed in 1750, is one of the oldest continuously operating churches in South Carolina. Its Georgian design reflects the prosperity of colonial Georgetown, a major port city at the time. The brick exterior has local oyster shell mortar, and the interior features original box pews and a striking elevated wineglass pulpit, typical of Anglican churches of the period.

Bethel A.M.E. Church in Georgetown, established in 1865, represents the determination of emancipated African Americans to create a spiritual home.

Originally meeting in a brush arbor, the congregation built its first wooden structure in 1882. The current brick building, completed in 1912, shows elegant Gothic Revival architecture with pointed windows and soaring tower.

During the Civil Rights Movement, Bethel A.M.E. was a meeting place for activists and organizers. The church maintains its historical significance while continuing to serve Georgetown’s Black community through worship services, educational programs and community outreach.

Christ Church Episcopal in Greenville

showcases the Gothic Revival style’s continued influence in the late 19th century. Its brick exterior and pointed arches create a striking presence in the historic district, while its interior woodwork demonstrates the skill of local artisans.

The preservation of these historic churches presents ongoing challenges. Many congregations struggle to maintain aging structures while adapting to modern needs.

Extreme weather threatens these valuable buildings, especially those on the coast. However, organizations such as Preservation South Carolina work to protect these irreplaceable buildings, including Trinity Episcopal Church in Abbeville, which dates to 1842. Designed by George E. Walker to mirror Europe’s magnificent Gothic cathedrals, the church is home to an extensive collection of rare 19th-century stained glass by American artist William Gibson.

Visiting South Carolina’s historic churches offers more than architectural appreciation. These buildings embody the state’s complex religious and social history, from colonial establishment to revolution and slavery to civil rights. Their graveyards tell stories of epidemics and wars.

Many historic churches maintain regular worship services, allowing visitors to experience these spaces as their builders intended. Others open their doors for tours, concerts and cultural events, ensuring continued relevance to community life.

Understanding South Carolina’s historic churches means acknowledging their complex role in society. While they represent architectural achievement and spiritual devotion, many were built in a society shaped by slavery and segregation. Rodeo is having a moment. Thanks to the runaway success of shows like “Yellowstone” and its spinoffs, “1883” and “1923,” Western culture has moseyed into the mainstream. Cowboy boots, wide-brimmed hats and arena thrills are showing up everywhere, from fashion runways to small-town festivals across the South.

But rodeo isn’t just entertainment. It is a bona fide sport rooted in ranch life and cowboy tradition. Today’s professional rodeos, governed by associations like the International Professional Rodeo Association and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the largest and most prestigious rodeo sanctioning body in the world, feature timed and judged events that demand athleticism, control and grit.

What to Expect in the Arena The heart of every rodeo lies in its events.

Bull riding challenges competitors to stay on a bull for 8 seconds while holding on with one hand. Saddle bronc riding requires balance and timing to stay on a bucking horse using a specialized saddle. Bareback riding adds intensity with no saddle at all, relying on a rigging strap for grip.

Barrel racing tests a rider’s speed and precision around three barrels. Team roping is a coordinated effort between two riders—one ropes the steer’s head and the other its heels. Tie-down roping demands speed and finesse as riders rope a calf, dismount and tie its legs. Breakaway roping is a timed event. When the rider ropes the calf, the rope pops free, signaling the clock to stop.

The Origins and Growth of Rodeo Rodeo’s roots trace back to the post-Civil War era, when cowboys celebrated the

end of long cattle drives by testing their roping, riding and racing skills against one another. These informal competitions soon merged with the spectacle of traveling Wild West shows, most famously staged

by Buffalo Bill Cody, whose performances mixed horsemanship, marksmanship and cowboy contests for audiences across the United States and Europe.

By the 1920s, rodeo surged in popularity, but without standardized rules or oversight, fraudulent promoters and inconsistent events threatened its credibility. The formation of organizations such as the PRCA brought structure, safety regulations and legitimacy to the sport.

Today, rodeo thrives in many forms, from professional and collegiate competitions to women’s, youth, senior, military and LGBTQ+ rodeo associations, each reflecting the sport’s cowboy heritage and the evolving diversity of modern competitors.

Animal Welfare in Rodeo While rodeo remains a cherished tradition in many rural communities, it has sparked discussion about animal welfare. Modern sanctioned rodeos follow strict veterinary and safety guidelines, with on-site veterinarians, padded equipment and event rules designed to minimize stress and injury to animals.

The PRCA, for example, enforces over 60 rules related to animal care, and violations can result in fines or

disqualification. Supporters argue that rodeo animals, especially bucking stock, are well-fed, well-trained athletes valued for their performance careers, which often span many years. Critics, however, question the use of animals in timed and rough-stock events, advocating for stronger oversight and alternative demonstrations. The ongoing debate highlights the balance between preserving cultural heritage and ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare.

New Trends in Southern Rodeos Across the Southern United States, especially in Texas, Oklahoma and the Carolinas, rodeo culture is evolving. Today’s events often include concert-caliber entertainment with big-name music acts. There are expanded youth competitions, such as mutton busting and peewee barrel racing, greater diversity in the arena with more women and minority riders and a festive atmosphere complete with craft fairs, food trucks, tailgating and vendors.

High-tech features are becoming standard as well, including digital scoreboards, livestreams and mobile apps.

Dress the Part You don’t have to be born on a ranch to look the part at a rodeo. Adults should reach for bootcut jeans or denim jackets, broken-in Western boots or sturdy shoes and a wide-brimmed hat or ballcap for sun protection. Add a flannel or light jacket for evening chill, and if you like, accent your outfit with a statement belt buckle, turquoise jewelry or fringe.

For children, keep it comfortable and fun with jeans or overalls, closed-toe shoes or cowboy boots, a sun hat or bandana and lightweight layers to adjust as the weather changes.

Tips for a Great Day Rodeos can be long, exciting and sometimes dusty adventures. Be prepared with sunscreen, refillable water bottles and hats. Ear protection is a smart idea for toddlers during louder events like bull riding or fireworks. Plan breaks between competitions to let children stretch, explore petting zoos or grab a snack.

Arrive early to secure better seats and settle in. Consider bringing a blanket or cushion for added comfort on bleachers.

Big Rodeo Energy in Houston The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the largest in the world by attendance, drawing more than 2.4 million visitors.

Thanks to its dedicated volunteers, this massive event raises over $25 million annually for student scholarships.

While Houston grabs the headlines, rodeos across South Carolina deliver just as much soul on a smaller, more intimate scale.

Rodeo Roots: Youth in the Arena South Carolina’s youth rodeo culture continues to grow, thanks to organizations like the South Carolina High School Rodeo Association, the Foothills Youth Rodeo Association and the South Carolina Rodeo Association’s Youth Division. Many events include petting zoos, pony rides and activities designed for young wranglers.

Hunting with hounds has been a pastime in the Appalachian region for centuries. People from all over the country gather at Paschal Farm in the Piedmont region of Camde, for a beagle hunt closing out the inaugural Wateree Hounds Sporting Week. Even before it officially ends, the club declared the event a resounding success and eagerly anticipates the revival of this coveted Southern sport.

Today, the beagles are searching for rabbits in the brush surrounding the farmhouse. The lively hounds, still behind lock and key in the truck’s kennels, are boisterous and focused. As their handler strides closer and reaches to unlock the kennel, barking intensifies.

They are itching to take the field.

Wateree Hounds Preserve Hunting Traditions Wateree Hounds is a community in Camden dedicated to preserving the timeless tradition of the fox hunt, in addition to others, while fostering camaraderie, land conservation and respect for shared heritage. This organization is a cornerstone of the equestrian and sporting community in Kershaw County, with a leadership team boasting more than 300 years of combined hunting experience. The group provides experiences across hunting lands, while championing wildlife management and equestrian excellence. Its mission extends past the field of hunting, through the careful breeding and training of hounds and horses, stewardship of properties and opening of trails that promote equestrian access while preserving natural habitats.

Both riders and supporters of this tight-knit club enjoy multiple fox hunts, polo matches and social events plus conservation community initiatives from October to March. The Wateree Cup Polo Classic is held in November.

As a registered pack under the Masters of Foxhounds Association since 2023, the membership—now a nonprofit— adheres to high standards of ethical

hunting and land stewardship.

The organization began in 2020. In anticipation of its first official sporting week in 2025, the membership brought in professional huntsman, Sam Clifton, one of top huntsmen in the country.

Originally from England, Sam has been hunting with hounds for 30 years.

During this week, he rode alongside the hounds and huntsman.

“Each day, a different huntsman picks up, taking the horn, but Clifton has, for the most part, been leading the pack and hunting the hounds,” says Ned Towell, co-founder of Wateree Hounds.

“He carries the horn and hunts the hounds, and we’re just fortunate to have him and all these other great huntsmen.

“The goal of this week is to attract folks from the North, where the ground is frozen.”

A master hunter, Ned says Camden was known as a resort town at the turn of the 20th century. It was a destination for polo, golf and bird hunting, winter activities that always attracted crowds.

“Let’s try and recreate that,” he says.

Wateree Hounds Sporting Week celebrates the renaissance of the iconic culture that once defined Camden and its landscape of rolling hills as the premier winter destination for America’s sporting elite. As South Carolina continues to experience unprecedented growth, events like this become increasingly important to maintain the sporting heritage of the region.

“It’s something we’re going to lose,” Ned says about the tradition of hunting.

“More importantly, it’s the land we’re going to lose. South Carolina is the fastest-growing state in the country right now, and if we don’t continue the traditions of hunting the properties, we’re going to see them turned into developments. That’s just a fact.”

Ned says he has a mission to preserve the land.

“We need to do the best we can to maintain these traditions because if we’re not out there, somebody else is going to be,” he says. “No one is a better conservationist than a hunter. We build

and maintain trails, build jumps on properties whenever possible, scout new property and work to preserve it all. If we can provide a little extra income to a landowner by leasing it, that might be the difference between them wanting to sell it or not.”

Redefining Camden and The Olde English District Camden and the seven surrounding counties that make up the Olde English District are experiencing a kind of renaissance, according to Ned. In addition to moving into the future with high expectations, it is also reaching backward to its storied past, layering its historical foundation with the character of the present.

In addition to winter sporting week, Wateree Hounds is resurrecting polo.

“We haven’t had polo in Camden for 20 years,” Ned says. “We’ve had matches, exhibition matches, and we have people that are actively living in Camden that are playing polo. We’re loving it.”

The Camden Polo League at the Kirkwood Field is positioned to bring back the sport that has been played here since the late 1800s. The site of the Battle of Kobkirk Hill during the Revolutionary War, the space has been used as a polo field, billed as the second oldest still in use in the region. In order to preserve the field for posterity, it is now owned by the American Battlefield Trust and the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust and is managed by the Wateree Hounds.

Ned says the club has a lease on the field, located in downtown Camden.

“It was going to be developed 25 years ago, and a gentleman saved it,” he says. “We’re keeping it up, and in return, we get to use it. And so, we’ve been able to be a part of the resurrection of polo, which is, again, sort of the new old Camden that’s been dead for a long time.”

Wateree Hounds anticipates bringing back the charter for the United States Polo Association that was originally formed in 1900.

One-hundred-twenty-five years later, it will be reorganized as the Camden Polo Club.

“It is the beginning of a new era for us,” Ned says. “This is all about tradition.”

The Thrill of the Hunt The thrill of the hunt returns to Camden in 2026 with the Wateree Hounds Sporting Week slated for Jan. 25-31. A weeklong schedule of events begins on Sunday with a welcome dinner at Finally Farm, followed by early morning hunts, shared meals and evening soirees.

The culmination of the storied event concludes with a wild game dinner and silent auction Saturday evening.

decorate more than 10 exquisitely decorated tables, welcoming guests. The scenes on each of the 124 plates showcase the family and sporting heritage that is now flourishing in Camden.

In 2025, 45 participants and hundreds of horses and hounds took part in more than 18 hunts, plus hundreds of spectators on scene. As their second bash comes into view, the club members anticipate even more involvement in events due to the success of last year’s festivities.

Wateree Hounds invites everyone to experience Camden through the agent of the hunt as it showcases the English tradition of the connection between animals, people and the land. With sporting week in full swing, a revival of the community’s history is coming full circle.

Barrett’s Beagles Are Ready to Hunt Arriving at Paschal Farm’s open field for the beagle hunt, the camaraderie is palpable. Men and women gather, cocktails in hand, laughing and sharing stories,

awaiting the release of the dogs and the sound of the horn. Since rabbits usually run in circles, spectators walk alongside the hounds—in this case, behind the eager animals—and not on horseback, making this ideal for all ages.

In their kennels, Ramsey Barrett’s pack of Orleans Foot beagles squirm with excitement. Nine beagles get the call this afternoon and are fitted with tracking devices around their necks. Since it’s a small field, seven remain in the kennels, and are none too happy about it. Ramsey travels across the United States and runs his pack five or six times each week, possibly more during the winter.

As the dogs jump from the bed of the truck, they circle the spectators once.

It doesn’t take long for their noses to find the direction that might produce rabbits. Ramsey flushes out the prospect of rabbits—“shaking rabbits” as he says— with the beagles on his heels and many leading his way, leaving everyone to catch up. He and his crew chase four different types of rabbits: cotton tail, snowshoe hare in Maine, cane cutters in Alabama and

swampers in North Carolina.

Unfortunately, no rabbits would be found on this wintery afternoon. As the afternoon ends, he watches the dogs return to the previous spot where nothing was found.

“This is a march to madness. They’re ignoring me,” Ramsay says, laughing as he continues to blow the horn and track the dogs via satellite. The monumental task of rounding them up, followed by the drill of returning them to their kennels, takes longer than it should. Afterall, they prefer the run. Ramsey removes the tracking devices from his dogs and shoves the devices inside his Gucci bag, ready for the next hunt.

Ramsey’s favorite part of being a handler comes down to two moments.

“One is when a puppy first speaks,” he says. “It’s kind of incredible as he finds his voice, and the penny drops, and it’s like, ‘I get it.’ And then the other, probably my favorite, is when every single beagle is opening up, just crashing loud, and they’re all racing together in full cry. When you have that, it’s what you live for.” 
