Light Up Navajo

Bringing electricity to families in the Navajo Nation Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC) first learned about the Light Up Navajo project through our Arizona statewide cooperative – Grand Canyon State Electric Cooperative Association – which represents all electric cooperatives across Arizona. Recognizing the importance of this volunteer initiative, MEC decided this was a cause worth supporting by donating time and resources.

Light Up Navajo began as a project in 2019 led by the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA) and the American Public Power Association (APPA) to bring electricity to the families living in the Navajo Nation who still live without electricity, running water, heating, air conditioning, refrigerators, microwaves or only have temporary power through NTUA leased solar or personal generators. The Navajo Nation is the largest American Indian nation within the United States, spanning portions of northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southeastern Utah. For context, the Navajo Nation serves more than 27,000 square miles of land – larger than the entire state of West Virginia, and MEC’s service territory covers 1,287 square miles. To date, there 4

are an estimated 10,400 Navajo families remaining without access to reliable power.

In recent years, the project has grown to include 45 volunteer utilities from 16 different states, including 17 rural cooperative utilities, two of them from Arizona. Over the past four years, the project has connected nearly 900 homes to electricity for the first time.

volunteered for the project, and on Saturday, July 5, 2025, traveled the six hour and fortyfive minute drive to Window Rock, AZ for orientation with the other volunteers across the country. Afterwards, they were stationed outside Tuba City, AZ for the week – approximately 300 miles away from MEC headquarters in Bullhead City, AZ.

Jerry Hardy, MEC’s Engineering and Operations Manager, brought the volunteer opportunity to MEC’s CEO Tyler Carlson and senior management. Mr. Tyler Carlson expressed strong support for the initiative stating, “We fully support this cause, and we are proud to support our linemen who volunteer their time and skills to help bring power to families who have lived without it for too long.”

Chad and Cole were paired with lineman volunteers from a Connecticut municipal utility – Norwich Public Utilities – and NTUA electric line crews. NTUA loaned a bucket truck for the volunteers. Chad, Cole, and team rotated jobs throughout the week, each essentially being a jackof-all-trades. “One day I was running the digger derrick truck, another day operating a wire trailer, another time performing groundman duties, and being point in the bucket lift,” Chad Valenzuela, MEC Journeyman Lineman reflected. Chad

has worked at MEC for seven years and is based out of our Bullhead City office. He first started as a groundman and received multiple promotions after completing MEC’s Union Apprenticeship program.

“This was a different experience,” Chad said.

“I mostly work with hot or live wire when performing troubleshooting or responding to outages and new service requests. Out here, we were building entirely new lines across far distances that was not energized.”

Together, the team installed 30 wooden poles – ranging from 30 – 40 feet in height and 2 miles of single-phase power over the duration of the trip.

“The majority of MEC’s eastern service territory is remote, so building line outside Tuba City felt similar to building new line in the Peach Springs area of our territory,” said Cole Garcia, MEC Apprentice Lineman.

“Working on this project was a great career experience,” Cole reflected. “It was valuable to see how other utilities would build out a line.” Cole has been with MEC for three years. He was hired as a groundman days after his graduation from lineman school in Northern California and within two months was promoted to Apprentice Lineman.

Mohave Electric Cooperative was formed in July 1946 as a not-for-profit utility because the surrounding investor-owned utilities would not bring power to our area.

Similarly, the Navajo Nation also did not have access to electricity as investor-owned utilities would not build distribution line to or on reservation land. NTUA was created in 1959 by tribal leaders to provide basic utility services to Navajo communities.

During their week-long journey, Chad and Cole helped build out line to four families and were able to connect two families to electricity for the first time.

Navajo resident, Esther Whiterock, shared with MEC, “I’ve been here 62 years and have never lived with electricity.” MEC captured a photo of her standing outside her ancestral home watching the crews build the line closer and closer to her house. “The first thing I’m looking forward to getting is a refrigerator, so I can have fresh meat and vegetables.” Esther mostly buys canned food from the grocery store 32 miles from her house. The only way to preserve fresh food is through ice chests and dry ice or running generators but the gas station to buy fuel is 27

miles away and can be expensive in price.

“My mother spoke about the idea of having electricity, but didn’t live to see it, and this week it’s becoming a reality,” Esther added.

Cole reflected, “Seeing the family have power for the first time – it was amazing to see their reactions.”

To end the week of hard work, NTUA, APPA, and the Navajo community hosted a celebratory appreciation dinner for all the volunteers. The gathering was a time to rejoice and memorialize this year’s accomplishments.

“It was great to come together with everyone and share this moment with them,” Chad recalled.

When asked if they would volunteer again, both linemen responded with enthusiasm, “YES!” Chad added, “It’s a very humbling experience. One I highly recommend to others and one you will not forget.”

Youth Tour, a lifechanging experience designed for high school juniors whose parents or guardians are MEC members. Selected students will join peers from across the country for a week-long, all-expenses-paid adventure to our nation’s capital during Summer 2026.

This unforgettable trip offers students the opportunity to explore national landmarks, meet with lawmakers, and gain a deeper understanding of American history and government, all while building lifelong friendships. More than a sightseeing tour, this journey inspires leadership, civic engagement, and personal growth.

MEC Invests in Bright Futures with $10,000 in

Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC) is investing in the next generation of leaders by awarding a total of $10,000 in scholarships to six exceptional students for its 2025 MEC Scholarship Program.

This year’s program drew 24 applications from students across MEC’s service territory, all pursuing higher education in the fall. After careful review by a panel of judges, six students were selected for their academic promise, community involvement, and commitment to their future fields.

The 2025 scholarship recipients and their attending colleges are: • Shea Amann, Arizona State University • Rachel Barton, University of Arizona • Christopher Boggs, Montana State University • Christy Cerjance, Grand Canyon University • Savanah Furr, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Prescott • Anthony Siyuja, Coconino Community College Each student received a $1,667 scholarship to support tuition and academic expenses at their respective

institutions. “Mohave Electric Cooperative is proud to offer continued support to students pursuing their educational dreams,” said Tyler Carlson, MEC CEO. “We congratulate these six outstanding individuals and look forward to watching the impact they will make in their communities and beyond.” Carlson spearheaded the creation of an education-focused investment fund to ensure continued opportunities like these scholarships are available for MEC members.

The scholarship fund is entirely separate from member rates and is dedicated to community-benefiting programs. MEC’s commitment to education goes beyond this annual scholarship. The cooperative also provides funding for Mohave College scholarships, Classroom Grants for local educators, Washington Youth Tour, and innovative learning experiences such as the Making Accidents Disappear magic show and SunWatts Renewable Energy Education Grant. We caught up with Christy Cerjance and asked her how the scholarship helps her with educational and career goals. “I chose Grand Canyon University because of the flexibility and convenience of the online program, which has allowed me to pursue my degree while balancing parenting and work. I was also drawn to GCU’s strong Christian foundation, which aligns with my personal values and faith. I’m especially looking forward to my upcoming courses Instructional Methodologies - Science and Instructional Methodologies - Social Studies. As someone pursuing early childhood education, I’m excited to explore creative, engaging ways to teach young learners in those subject areas. My ultimate goal is to become a preschool teacher. I have a deep passion for working with young children and helping lay a strong foundation for their future learning and development. Throughout this program, I’ve been incredibly grateful for the mentor teachers I’ve had the opportunity to work with during my practicum experiences. Their guidance, encouragement, and willingness to share real classroom strategies have made a lasting impact on me. Observing their patience, creativity, and ability to connect with every child has helped shape the kind of educator I aspire to be.”

Trees do more than provide curb appeal. When strategically planted to shade the east, west, and south-facing walls of your home, trees can lower exterior wall temperatures and reduce cooling costs by up to 20%.

This season, members can choose from four popular shade tree varieties: Each tree is just $9, with a limit of eight per member, and availability is first come, first served. Colorado River Women’s Council You may recognize Colorado River Women’s Council (CRWC) for their signature annual event, Boom Box Parade. A holiday float and light celebration since 1998, the parade draws hundreds of residents and visitors who line Hancock Road to share cheer, unity, and the joy of giving across the Tri-State region.

But did you know CRWC is a nonprofit celebrating over 60 years of service to the Tri-State area—Bullhead City, Laughlin, Needles, Fort Mohave, and Mohave Valley?

CRWC is the cornerstone for fostering civic leadership, uplifting small businesses, and empowering children, teachers, and women through sponsor-supported initiatives like G.A.T.E.(Grant Assistance for Teachers

and Educators), P.O.K.E.(Protecting Our Kids Environment), Women Helping Women, Adulteen, and continuing education scholarships.

This past year, CRWC introduced two new programs, Seeds of Hope and Homeless Shelter Dinners, adding another layer of meaningful support to the community.

Some of their programs include: • Scholarships – Awards $5,000 annually to local high-school seniors or trade school students via a merit-based application requiring essays.

• Women Helping Women – Provides support for women exiting safe houses, in recovery, or overcoming economic hardship.

• Golden Rule Community – Encourages kindness and civility throughout the Tri-State area, recognizing everyday heroes in acts of compassion.

CRWC and their annual corporate sponsors ranging from Farmers Insurance, TWN Communications, DOT Foods, Mohave Electric Cooperative, and Don Laughlin’s Riverside Resort Hotel & Casino, to name a few, enable CRWC to make a wide-reaching impact in the community.

With fund raising events such as Western Auction, CRWC is also able to contribute to the Colorado River Concert Series, Casa Council, Kiwanis of the Colorado River Cornfest, and support teachers, students, clubs, and community development programs.

For those wishing to join CRWC, their monthly luncheon meets on the second Thursday of each month and hosts guest speakers on community-relevant topics.

Members enjoy fellowship, networking, and enrichment for a better community.

Employee Spotlight JEANNIE DENNISON

Jeannie Dennison is an Accounting Representative at Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC).

For the past 11 years, Jeannie has been a keystone of MEC’s finance and accounting team. She joined MEC in 2013 as a cashier, where her attention to detail and warm demeanor quickly stood out. Just a year later, she transitioned into her current role as an accounting representative, a position she’s mastered with precision, patience, and pride.

Jeannie’s daily work involves the meticulous tasks that keep the cooperative’s finance and accounting department running smoothly: entering expenses and assets into the general ledger, balancing accounts through bank reconciliation, and generating invoices for miscellaneous receivables. Of all her responsibilities, it’s the bank reconciliation that truly lights her up. “It’s the challenge,” she says. “It’s like solving a puzzle. It doesn’t always balance right away, so you have to figure out where the issue is. I love that.”

With retirement on the horizon in Spring 2026, Jeannie reflects on a career filled with numbers, but also with deep human connection. Before joining MEC, she had a varied career that included working as a unit secretary, rising to a social worker in Veterans Affairs, and even restaurant management part-time, all while raising three children on her own. “I’ve always had a soft spot for the elderly and Veterans,” she shares. “They have so much knowledge, so many stories. We used to film them talking about their experiences and send the videos to their families. It was incredibly meaningful.”

Born in Washington, D.C., and raised throughout Maryland, Jeannie moved to Bullhead City in 2012. Her heart, however, still belongs to the East Coast in many ways. She cherishes visits back East in the fall or early spring, often gathering family in a park pavilion for a day of shared memories. Family is everything to Jeannie; she has three children (two boys and one girl), seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and even a grand-puppy - a Chiweenie-Pug mix with plenty of personality.

Outside of work, Jeannie finds joy in the quiet comfort of books, especially old historical novels. She’s an avid reader who proudly owns a first edition of Gone with the Wind and also counts Wuthering Heights among her favorites. Her love of stories started early, her childhood included ballet, crafting with her mother which included homemade Halloween costumes, and a household filled with the music of The Beatles and Tom Jones.

With a life rich in experience, Jeannie still enjoys simple pleasures: a good true crime mystery on the ID Channel, a documentary on National Geographic, and a chance to piece together a puzzle, whether they’re on paper or in a ledger.

Jeannie Dennison brings heart, history, and a whole lot of wisdom to MEC. Her dedication to her craft and compassion for others make her more than just a valued employee; they make her family.

Beef Brisket Energy Services Supervisor Bill Nielsen shares his beef brisket recipe.

Ingredients 7 pounds small beef brisket 2 tablespoons mustard 2 tablespoons salt 2 tablespoons pepper 2 teaspoons garlic powder 2 tablespoons Traeger beef rub As desired Bill Johnson’s Barbeque Sauce

Directions Coat Beef Brisket with mustard (as a binder) and season well with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and your favorite rub. No need to marinate brisket; cooking “low and slow” allows all of the seasonings to infuse into the meat.

Place the brisket directly on the smoker at 225 degrees for about six hours.

Remove from the smoker and wrap the meat tightly in aluminum foil or butcher paper. Return to smoker for another four to six hours (depending on the size of the brisket) or until the internal temperature reaches about 200 degrees.

Remove from the smoker (keep wrapped) and let it rest for 15 to 30 minutes. Remove wrapper and slice across the grain. Top with your favorite bbq sauce and enjoy!!!

Enhances Energy R With New Natural G In the heart of Cochise County, Arizona, the Apache Generating Station stands as a testament to the commitment of the Arizona Electric Power Cooperative (AEPCO) to reliable energy generation for rural communities across the Desert Southwest.

This facility is undergoing a significant transformation with the introduction of two new gas units, marking the first expansion of the Apache Generating Station since 2002.

The new additions, known as Gas Turbine No. 5 and Gas Turbine No. 6 (GT5 and GT6), utilize natural gas to generate an additional 84 megawatts (MW) of power. These units employ cutting-edge aero-derivative technology that is renowned for its efficiency and flexibility compared to traditional gas turbines. This innovative investment in new technology showcases AEPCO’s commitment to maintaining reliability through the modernization of its generation fleet.

One of the key advantages of GT5 and GT6 is their rapid response time. Capable of ramping up energy production in just 10 minutes, these units are designed as quick-start solutions to address the fluctuating energy demands experienced by AEPCO’s members. During peak demand periods, such as hot summer afternoons or bustling evening hours when energy consumption surges, system operators can quickly activate these new gas units. This capability is crucial for maintaining a stable power supply and effectively preventing brownouts and blackouts across the energy grid.

Another notable aspect of the new gas units 20

is their environmental performance. GT5 and GT6 are equipped with state-of-the-art technology that reduces emissions and improves the efficiency of the units. In an era where environmental sustainability is paramount, these advancements reflect AEPCO’s commitment to reducing emissions while still meeting the energy needs of its members.

The introduction of these new gas units is strategically aligned to complement AEPCO’s expanding renewable energy portfolio as part of its Reliable Energy Plan. The new gas turbines are expected to seamlessly integrate with existing and forthcoming solar projects. Solar power generation typically peaks during the day and tapers off in the evening as sunlight diminishes. GT5 and GT6 will provide essential support during these transitional periods, ensuring a consistent and reliable energy supply when demand rises, particularly as homes and businesses switch on their lights at dusk.

The addition of GT5 and GT6 represents a significant leap forward in AEPCO’s Reliable Energy Plan. As rural communities continue to grow and evolve, the importance of modernization and adaptability in energy generation remains critical. With these new gas units, AEPCO is not only ensuring a robust energy future but also reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility and community needs. The enhanced capabilities of Apache Generating Station will serve as a cornerstone of energy stability for the region, paving the way for a brighter, more secure energy future. n

A Message from CEO Tyler Carlson

Join MEC at a Townhall Meeting Greetings MEC Members, Mohave Electric Cooperative has been providing safe, reliable, affordable electricity to our members for seventynine years. We’ve made substantial investments to harden the grid and enhance reliability, especially in the face of extreme weather and other public policy changes.

MEC incurs both fixed costs and energy costs and the two make up the majority of your electricity bill. As a member-owned, not-for-profit cooperative utility, MEC works diligently to minimize any financial costs to our members. However, like many utilities across the country, we have seen increases in our fixed costs and need to adjust our customer charge and rates to account for these changes in costs.

Fixed costs including distribution infrastructure such as wires, poles, transformers, meters, operations, repairs, and maintenance, etc. have increased an average of 99% since 2020. Fixed costs are primarily recovered in the customer charge. These costs are what is needed for MEC to provide electricity to you whether you have any kWh usage or not.

Fortunately, our energy costs which include the cost to generate, transmit, and procure electricity have leveled out since 2023. These costs vary and are closely tied to the price of natural gas and coal which are forecasted to be stable for now.

Mohave Electric has filed a Rate Case to account for the changes in costs and to allow us to continue to invest in our energy grid. Since our last Cost of Service Study in 2021, we have invested $15,285,962 in distribution systems, renewable energy facilities, and long-term power supplies.

MEC contracted an energy rate analyst to review our cost of service based on our audited 2024 financials. This comprehensive study indicates the Customer Charge for most members should see a small increase - $5.99 for standard residential service. Also, the current standard residential service rate, tiered from 8¢ - 11¢ per kWh of electricity, will remain the same. Commercial, solar, time of use, and demand services could see a combination of slight increases in customer charge, energy rates, and demand charges.
