FIRST WORDS Letter from the Editor The World’s—and UC’s—Most Intriguing People One of my favorite interviews for this issue was the chat I had with Dawn Chmielewski ’83, a senior editor at Forbes who’s spent decades reporting on the tech and entertainment industries—and not just because I wanted the scoop on the celebrities she’s encountered.

Among other questions, I asked Chmielewski about her favorite part of her job.

“I’ve always felt fortunate to work as a professional journalist,” she told me. “It’s a gig that offers unparalleled access to the world’s most intriguing people. It has opened doors to conversations with Oscar-winning director Ron Howard and media mogul Shari Redstone, whose family controls CBS and Viacom, among others.”

And while I haven’t interviewed any billionaire moguls or Oscar-winning directors (yet), Chmielewski’s comment perfectly expressed a thought I had many times while working on this issue.

For the “Three Questions” story alone, I talked to a marketing expert responsible for “shaping the media industry” according to Ad Age; the Ivy League’s only female Director of Football Operations; an inspiring plus-size dancer and entrepreneur on the rise; and Michigan’s best— and might I add, funniest—bed bug assassin.

Intriguing people, to say the least.

Earlier this fall, I spoke with The New York Times about the remarkable progress Utica College has made toward addressing the issue of college affordability.

The fact is, we have a great story to tell. In addition to being among the nation’s first private colleges to do so, UC has been one of the most successful at bucking the trend of skyrocketing tuition. Since reducing our tuition price three years ago, we have cut our average student debt burden by a third while steadily raising our student persistence and graduation rates. At the same time, we have exceeded our targets for net tuition revenue each of the last three years, which has contributed to the past two fiscal years being the strongest in the College’s history.

As the Times’ article noted, these favorable results contrast with those of other colleges and universities that have implemented tuition resets and subsequently seen their efforts fall short of expectations, either in terms of student affordability or institutional strength and performance.

Why is Utica College an unusual success story in this regard? There are many answers to this question, but to my mind the primary reasons are these.

First, we were able to reduce our tuition from a position of strength rather than one of economic necessity. Demand for our programs was already high before the reset, and we had taken significant steps to strengthen our financial profile in the years leading up to its implementation.

Second, our tuition reset was an integral component in a broader strategy, not a gimmick. We were determined to lead on the affordability issue by putting the families we serve first, making a significant investment in guaranteeing that all students – new and returning, from all income levels – would realize savings.

Third, while other institutions focused on price, we kept the focus on value and outcomes, because this is what our current and prospective students expect from us. This is, after all, the essential promise of a Utica College education, and our continuing fulfillment of that promise is the only true measure of our success.

It is a particular point of pride for me to lead an institution that is so deeply committed to taking the right steps for the right reasons. Moreover, I am proud to say that Utica College is now at the center of a national conversation on college affordability, access, and opportunity.

And we’re not done. Our next Strategic Plan, which I expect the College will implement by January 1, will advance both UC’s tradition of innovation and our entrepreneurial spirit, while deepening our commitment to delivering a high-quality private education at an affordable cost.

You might say that, like the students we serve, we never stand still.

Everyday Pioneers:

Michael Delia ’20 A fateful campus tour as a high school student led Michael Delia to an internship—and then a dream job in construction management.

Michael Delia was set on scoring his dream job from the moment he set foot on UC’s campus, and even before he was officially a student.

In 2016, Delia, then a highschool senior from Poughquag, New York, visited Utica College for Construction Management Major Discovery Day, an admissions event focused on the CM program. Both his father and grandfather were in construction, says Delia, and he had grown up determined to follow the same career path.

“Since I was a kid, I don’t remember one family dinner where construction wasn’t the

topic of conversation,” he recalls.

So on that day at UC, Delia was excited to be paired with Chris Meyer ’79, a construction management alumnus tasked with showing the prospective student around campus. As they toured buildings and talked, Meyer told Delia about his own construction company, Meyer Contracting, located downstate near Delia’s hometown. At the end of the day, as they prepared to say goodbye, Meyer asked if Delia had any more questions for him. He did.

He asked for a job.

Surprised and impressed, Meyer delivered. He helped Delia

secure an internship at his company that very summer, where he gained real-world experience in construction management months before he’d take his first CM class at UC. In fact, Delia has returned to Meyer Contracting each summer since 2016, and in 2019, Meyer offered Delia a full-time position as an assistant project manager after his graduation in May 2020.

Says Delia, “I’ve had a great experience there as an intern, so I’m excited to join the team full time.”

Now a senior, Delia has excelled at UC, taking leadership roles in both the Student Contractors Association (SCA) and Student Government Association (SGA).

In the spring of 2019, his peers elected him president of the SGA, and he’s spent the first

months of his tenure “surrounding myself with good people who want to get things done,” he says. And he’s quick to point out that “good people” aren’t always people who share his views.

“That’s part of a college education—learning to work with people who don’t think like you, but who want to accomplish the same goals.”

For Delia, one of those goals was realized on November 8, when the Veterans Monument and Flagpole, constructed in part by the SCA, was dedicated in front of the Strebel Student Center.

“Both my grandfathers were Marines,” he says. “I’m proud to have played a part in creating a place at UC where we can honor their sacrifice.” (For more on the new Veterans Monument and Flagpole, see page 13.)

Honoring Dr. Richard Costa I would like to eulogize Richard Hauer Costa, a former UC professor who

passed away in New Hartford, aged 97, on May 21, 2019.

I transferred to Utica College from Cornell as a biology major more than 50 years ago. I was enjoying my science and math classes, but I was putting off the literature course required for my degree because my English teachers from high school and Cornell ranged from boring to sadistic. I had come to think it was impossible to teach English well.

I approached Mr. Richard Costa’s classroom determined to stick it out. He passed out a short story, “Theft,” by Katherine Anne Porter, told us to read it, and called the roll. I noticed that there was a pre-med

student, I’ll call him Mr. X, who had been very obnoxious in two of my science classes. Mr. Costa then led a discussion of the story that was useful and enjoyable, had Mr. X not contributed some of his annoying disquisitions. When the class ended, Mr. Costa assigned more reading and said, “Mr. X, please see me after class.” I eavesdropped on their conversation. Costa said, “Mr. X, you are not taking this class.” “You can’t do that, I’m a straight A pre-med.” “I don’t care who you are or who your family might be. If you come back you will get an F.” I went to the second class with some trepidation because I expected Mr. X to win. I was not going to stay if he

was there. He was not, and I learned that it was indeed possible to teach English well.

We read a lot, discussed a lot, and wrote about lots of literature. Costa’s comments were designed to help us read, write, and think better.

He even allowed us to disagree with him. We had a major disagreement about two of the poems on the final exam, but I still got an A. I finished my degree and went back to Cornell where I got a job working for the Veterinary College. Seven years later I got a chance to switch fields and became an English professor; I was going to teach like Mr. Costa. My wife, Molly, and I packed up a small U-Haul and our two small sons and drove to Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. Without a home yet secured, we first arrived at the home of Bob and Cindy Bernstein, where we were to spend our first night. Bob came out and said, “There’s someone here who says he knows you.” And there was Dick Costa, now Dr. Costa, with a Ph.D. from Purdue, and Director Emeritus of Public Relations at Utica

College. Pure serendipity. He became my advisor, I took seven courses with him, we collected several more areas of contention, and we got through my dissertation.

Other grad students tended to avoid his classes because he gave them actually useful criticism and, sometimes, gave grades less than an A. Dr. Costa wrote seven books, all of which are re-readable and make you want to read the literature he writes about. He won two distinguished teacher awards at A&M, both of which I was honored to write letters of support for.

We communicated regularly over the years, and I could always count on him for interesting responses.

I got to enjoy 43 years of teaching English because of Dick Costa.

A Pioneering Partnership Celebrating UC’s Newest Residence Hall COLLEGE DORM OR LUXURY APARTMENT? UTICA COLLEGE’S NEWEST RESIDENCE HALL, PIONEER VILLAGE, IS BOTH. Opened in fall 2019, the apartment-style living complex is comprised of three buildings with 144 beds total. Each unit includes four single bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room, full kitchen with dishwasher, and

a washer and dryer. A smaller one-story building adjacent to the complex serves as a community center for residents.

The $14 million-dollar project, a partnership between the Municipal Housing Authority, BBL Construction Services LLC, and Utica College, was built by Albany-based BBL, with several UC construction management grads and students assuming

leadership roles in the project.

“This partnership has allowed UC to offer an affordable, premium-level housing option that keeps more students on campus, where they can live and learn alongside their peers as part of the growing Utica College community,” President Laura Casamento said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 13.

Others speaking at the celebration included Senior Vice President for Student Life and Enrollment Management Jeffery Gates, Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri, Utica Municipal Housing Authority Executive Director Robert Calli, BBL CFO Steve Obermayer, and UC Student Government Association president Michael Delia ’20.

Shaun Harper Visits UC When racial equality expert and scholar Shaun Harper visited campus on September 12, he hoped to inspire an open dialogue about race relations at UC. He didn’t expect to leave inspired himself. “I was touched and motivated by the honesty of the students, faculty, and staff at Utica College,” he said.

“Conversations about race are always difficult, but when people are willing to be open with one another, that’s when change happens.”

In various sessions with faculty, staff, students and administration, Harper, the founder and executive director of the University of Southern California’s Race and Equity Center, helped formulate ideas to improve the campus climate.

“I am rooting for UC,” said Harper. (1) Steps Toward Unity The sun was out—and so were hundreds of students, faculty, and staff members on September 4 for the third annual Unity Walk, celebrating inclusion and diversity at Utica College. Said Provost Todd Pfannestiel in his opening remarks: “This walk is a simple but very powerful way of saying we stand together as one community.” (2) Break for Good The best way to spend fall break? Helping others. On October 15, more than 100 members of the UC community participated in Alternative Fall Break, organized by the Office of Student Life and College Engagement, and lent a hand to local organizations like The Root Farm, Utica Zoo,

Honoring Those Who Served Utica College returned to its roots this Veterans Day, thanks to two student groups who came together to honor U.S. veterans, including students and alumni who have served in the Armed Forces, with a new monument on campus.

Funded by donations, the Student Veterans Association (SVA) and Student Contractors Association (SCA) purchased a 35-foot flagpole set in concrete in front of Strebel Student Center, alongside a sidewalk and a granite and bronze monument.

Members of the UC community celebrated the addition to campus in a dedication ceremony on November 8.

Clayton Hawes ’19, president of the SVA who currently serves in the U.S. Army Reserves, helped organize the project. “This monument pays tribute to our fallen veterans and to the men and women currently serving under our flag,” he said. “It speaks to the very reason that Utica College was founded, to educate those who served in defense of our nation.”

Utica College was founded by Syracuse University in 1946 when area leaders saw a need to provide education for veterans returning from World War II. The college, currently home to nearly 150 veteran students, has long been designated a Military Friendly College, and more recently, a Purple Heart campus in recognition of UC’s support of military members, veterans, and their families. A Perfect Match PAT GAGAN ’20 GAVE OF HIMSELF TO HELP SOMEONE FIGHTING CANCER—LITERALLY. When Be The Match, the global leader in bone marrow transplantation, came to the Utica College campus in search of possible bone marrow donors, 120 Pioneers stepped up to be tested, including Gagan, a former left tackle for the Pioneers, now serving as assistant offensive line coach.

Months later, Gagan got a phone call. Three physicals and four rounds of bloodwork determined that he was indeed a match for a 22-year-old male with leukemia. The patient had exhausted chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and

Gagan—and his bone marrow— were his last hope.

In August, Gagan flew to Washington, D.C., for the donation surgery funded by The Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation at Georgetown Medical Center. It’s a serious surgery, as surgeons drill into the donor’s pelvis and remove 1.5 liters of bone marrow; recovery often takes several weeks.

Uncomfortable with any personal notoriety, Gagan shares his story only so others will be tested and will consider donating, as well. The initial test is a simple cheek swab; if someone matches a patient at 70 percent or more, the medical team will ask for bloodwork.

“I can’t say enough about the doctors at Georgetown, The Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation, and Be The Match,” he says.

The feeling is mutual.

“The Andy Talley Bone Marrow Foundation is so honored and proud of your selfless commitment to give someone a second chance at life,” the foundation’s representatives posted to social media. “Thank you, Pat! And thank you to UC Football for your continued support!”

For Gagan, though, the donation was just second nature. “I didn’t think twice,” he says. “I couldn’t go to sleep at night if I said ‘no’ to someone’s last shot.”

Faculty Achievement Patrice Hallock, dean of health professions and education, Laurence Zoeckler, professor of education and Thomas Crist, Harold T. Clark Jr. Professor of Anthropology and Anatomy and professor of physical therapy, traveled to Butrint National Park in southern Albania in May as part of Utica College’s 16th Annual Forensic Anthropology/Bioarchaeology Field School.(1) Jason Francey, assistant director of college engagement, Nicholas Abounador, adjunct lecturer of theatre, Michael Diederich, adjunct lecturer of theatre, Laura Salvaggio, faculty theatre director, and Hannah DeStefano ’23 founded The Wilde Rep Theatre, located in New Hartford. Their first show, set in an insane asylum, opened in September.

Gary Leising, assistant professor of English, wrote an essay titled “View of ‘Mary Ventura and the Rebirth Kingdom.’” The piece examines the short story by Sylvia Plath.

Leising’s essay, his third on Plath, was recently published in Indiana University’s journal Plath Profiles.

Annmarie Kinsella, assistant professor of occupational therapy, Dawn Evans, assistant professor of physical therapy, and Cynthia Love-Williams, associate professor of nursing, hosted a best practice presentation, “Preparing a Workforce for Interprofessional Practice,” at World Future Forum 2019 in April.

Juan Thomas, associate professor of Spanish, presented “Contact induced pluricentricity? The role of Anglicisms in forging a new variety of Spanish” at the Languages, Nations and Cultures conference in Stockholm, Sweden in May. Thomas Rossi, professor of management, was awarded the Virgil Crisafulli Distinguished Teaching Award at the College’s undergraduate Commencement ceremony in May. Rossi was chosen through nominations made by colleagues and students, who described his teaching style as “passionate and effective,” and praised his ability to “share stories in the classroom that directly relate to personal, real-world experiences.” (2)

ATHLETICS Jhonny Theze ’23 Hometown: Bronx, NY Major: Business Management Jhonny Theze has made quite a first impression. The UC men’s soccer team began the season 9-2-2, setting a school record for the best start to a season, and the freshman was a central figure in the Pioneers’ success. Theze, who immigrated to the U.S. following the 2010 earthquake in his native Haiti, has led UC in goals and points, setting a new school mark for goals by a freshman and quickly establishing himself as one of the most prolific scorers in the Empire 8 Conference. Head coach Brian Marcantonio says the midfielder’s impact on his team cannot be measured in statistics alone. “He’s one of the most talented freshmen I’ve ever seen,” he says.

“As much as he’s scoring goals, he opens up opportunities for other guys. He draws so much attention defensively. He’ll get (the ball), intentionally draw two or three defenders, and then release to others.”

The men’s golf team won the Empire 8 Fall Championship for the first time in program history. (1) The women’s golf team finished second at the Northeast Women’s Golf Conference Championships, the highest finish in program history.

The women’s soccer team’s 8-3 record through 11 games of a 16-game schedule marked the program’s best start since 2005. Mikayla Blumenstock ’20 and Allison Wagner ’20 were named ECAC North Region Offensive and Defensive Players of the Month, respectively, for October. (2) The football team defeated conference rival St. John Fisher 34-28 in the third annual New York State Tool Believe Bowl on October 12. The Believe Bowl benefits the Thea Bowman

House and the Believe 271 Foundation, which provides support for local fire fighters battling cancer and other life-threatening occupational illnesses. (3) Mitchell Marlow ’20 recently broke the men’s cross-country school record in the 8K with a time of 25:27. (4) Utica College was one of four recipients of the NCAA 360 Proof Lighthouse Award. The award was established in spring 2019 to recognize outstanding high-risk alcohol use prevention practices and contributions to the field of prevention. Utica College will be recognized at the Alcohol, Other Drug, and Campus Violence Prevention Conference: A NASPA Strategies Conference and the NCAA Convention.

POWER THE BLACK STUDENT UNION CELEBRATES 50 YEARS AT UTICA COLLEGE

In the fall of 1966, a group of 20 black students came together to form United Students at Utica College. Its mission: “to inform both black and white students of the Negro in this society and, hopefully, promote more humanitarian attitudes toward the Negro in America.”

Over the course of two years, the group grew and became more visible on campus while developing a progressive list of demands: install a lecture series for prominent black speakers, create courses on black history and achievement, establish a black cultural center on campus, and make a more concerted effort to recruit minority students, to name a few.

“During the past three years, several black students have left Utica College because the educational system has been grossly delinquent in responding to the mod-

ern needs of the minority students,” their proposal began.

While some of the demands were met, others had been ignored by college administration, prompting six students representing the newly named Black Students Union to stage a historic sit-in in a campus computer lab. Because of their efforts, an agreement was finally reached with then-president Dr. J. Kenneth Donahue.

That was May 1969.

Now, 50 years later, the Utica College Black Student Union is one of

the most visible and most active organizations on campus. Since 1969, its members have gone on to achieve personal and career success, and many of them returned to UC in October to celebrate the milestone during homecoming weekend.

We spoke with four former BSU presidents to learn how their experience in the organization has impacted their lives—and is impacting them still.

Jonathan Adewumi ’86 “I joined the BSU as a freshman in 1981. I was elected president in 1983

and served for two terms.

At the time, the biggest issue for minority students at UC was that our organizations were not funded on par with the white organizations. The BSU was an umbrella organization that was comprised of students in black fraternities and sororities, black student athletes, the gospel choir and the rest of the black student population.

The Black Student Union provided us with a vehicle to discuss issues that affected us as students on the campus and to proffer solutions. We conducted fundraising programs to meet budget shortfalls, and it also allowed us to have a united voice on the campus.

with the BSU, from sit-ins in Strebel protesting a cut in minority programming on WPNR, holiday parties in the BSU room, to fundraising events. It was an amazing time. Dear to me, though, was going to area prisons with the gospel choir to minister to the incarcerated.

Being president of the BSU made me sensitive to the needs of my peers and the struggle each person was going through to meet their goals. That experience helped later in life when I was chairman of a 250-member Black Merchants Association. The ability to listen to my members’ needs and develop solutions to individual and community problems had its roots at Utica College. Even now, I carry those lessons as president of a non-profit organization for Nigerian descendants living in the United States, Europe, and Canada that tries to 17

alleviate the economic and educational challenges of our people back in Nigeria.

Today, I live in Brooklyn, New York, and have been an entrepreneur most of my adult life. I’ve had the opportunity to partner with my brothers to own a clothing manufacturing company, Nigerian Fabrics and Fashions, a computer magazine PC World Africa, and most recently Amarachi Restaurant. I’m a single parent of an amazing 24-year-old son who is currently enrolled in an MBA program at Montclair State University.”

Anthony Baird ’91 “I was involved as a BSU member from 1987-89, and in the spring of 1989, I was encouraged to run for president. I was elected and served as president until my graduation in 1991.

pretty cool. I felt like I was getting along with the people, and I didn’t think there was more to campus life than just trying to adjust as a new student.

But as I paid attention to the kinds of activities and programs that were being organized and delivered to the community by the BSU, I learned quickly that the role of the BSU president was to get students of color acclimated to life on a predominantly white college campus. For black students, we helped create a community of people that look like you, identify with you, and share common experiences with you; to me, that was one of the ways to survive on campus.

As president of the Black Student Union, I was responsible for changing the tenor by getting more students of color involved on campus, fostering more diversity, working with the administration, and working with black alumni to be more engaged with UC. However, when the BSU received letters from some racist people who threatened our lives, our safety, and our well being on campus, it prompted a radical move for the BSU to be better organized and to create change on the campus. We demanded more inclusion and tolerance for people of color, black people, and people of the African diaspora (African, Hispanic-Latino, African-American, Asian, and Native American). I believe that moment left an indelible mark in my

mind and in my heart around issues of leadership, diversity, inclusion, mentorship, persistence and determination.

I have since gone on to serve over 26 years in higher education administration, and I believe that career path was a result of the work I did while I was a UC student and leader of the BSU. Because of the relationships I forged with my peers, faculty, and administrators during a time of crisis, I felt empowered, emboldened, and capable of making a greater impact on any college campus I were to step on. I went on to earn terminal degrees in the field of higher education leadership.

I am currently retired from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. I have two adult children; my son has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and is currently working for General Dynamics Electric Boat in Connecticut, and my daughter has her master’s degree from the New School in Manhattan. She’s building her career in management.

I have been busy expanding my educational, personal, and professional coaching enterprise. I am building a career and professional readiness curriculum online platform in hopes to distribute throughout the nation and the world.

I am also working on a book, and the central theme is that your success is always under construction, that you are the

architect of said success and that you must build a strong education, personal, and professional foundation, so you can leverage your talents, abilities, gifts, and skills to help solve problems. It is a message to college-age students and new entrants in to the workforce who are trying to figure out how to make sense of who they are in relation to what they want to do for a career.”

Patricia Gortman ’17 “When I’m became the president of the BSU in 2015, I didn’t have a blueprint. I had never run an organization before.

At the first meeting, there were about six students.

That’s when it hit me: This is my culture, and this isn’t something I can let die out.

It was important that our voices were heard and our culture was respected every single day on campus, with every event, forum, and meeting. Through perseverance and the help of a few dedicated members, we ended up with 27 members the next year.

The lessons I’ve learned from my time in the BSU are priceless. From dealing with events, detailed planning, agendas, and getting the student body interested in what you have to say, to the parties, and chill nights, I’ve gained a lot of experience with staying calm in stressful situations.

I am happy to say I’ve found community, friendship, confidence, public speaking skills and my voice through the BSU. I’m proud to mentor and witness the next generation of BSU, as well.

I am originally from Harlem, New York, but I currently live in Utica working in financial aid at Mohawk Valley Community College.

From the organizational skills to the communication skills, I’ve applied all of the lessons I learned as president of BSU in my professional and day-today life. “ Alexia Colacicco ’19 “I had several goals for the BSU when I became president in 2018. I wanted for us to have fun, educate those around us, stand up 19

for what we believe in, and for others to gain knowledge and/or perspective through our events on campus. On a more personal level, I wanted the BSU to be a safe place for students of color to talk about racial tension and injustices that happen on our campus and the real world. Overall, I want BSU members to be educational and social contributors to campus, but also a family for those who decide to be a part of it.

We had a great Black History Month in 2019 with many educational and social events (16 of them, almost one event every day), and ended it with one of our annual events, “Amateur Night at the Apollo.”

Honestly, I saw my greatest accomplishments as president in my members.

When I saw my members growing, learning things, becoming more active, hosting events, contributing event ideas, it made me feel good. I like seeing people get out of their comfort zone, do things they usually wouldn’t do, or just contribute to an event or something they’re passionate about. BSU wouldn’t be as successful without the contributions the members provide.

I’m not worried about the future of BSU. I think BSU has always had strong minded and determined people involved. We’ve been doing it for 50 years!

Also, BSU will always be necessary. Especially in a predominately white institution, where people may not have the same perspectives on things, or may not even know another point of view on the situation.”

Your UC Love Stories

Sure, it’s not uncommon for love to blossom on a college campus. Yet somehow, the tales of Pioneers locking eyes during orientation, falling in love over pancakes in the Caf, or popping the question outside White Hall never seem to get old. We took to social media and asked alumni to share their Utica College love stories. Here are some of our favorites: Online Dating I first encountered my future husband, Brian Cooley G’17, in the fall of 2017.

We were both earning our MBAs in UC’s online program, and we were placed into the same group in our marketing management class, which we attended

virtually. After meeting in the online classroom, we would video chat after class and exchange emails, eventually agreeing to meet in person. Our first in-person meeting was lunch at Grande’s in Rome. I brought one of my friends with me for safety reasons. I was nervous and didn’t talk much, but there was definitely a connection between Brian and me. We got engaged May 2018 and even took our engagement photos on campus! We were married in May 2019.

A Great Catch If it weren’t for an arm injury in high school, I wouldn’t have ended up at Utica College or met my wife.

As a high-school athlete, my plan was to go to a D1 school to play baseball.

Instead, UC baseball coach Don Guido welcomed me to his team in the fall of 1991. Carrie Offinger and I met as freshmen on the first day of classes. It was truly love at first sight. Carrie and I have been married 24 years, and we have two children: Kaitlyn, age 23, and Tyler, 18.

I met my husband, Griffin Reid ’07, at Utica College orientation in 2003, when he was my orientation leader. It was actually my mom who met Griffin first.

At the time, I was dating someone else, but after meeting Griffin as part of the parents’ group, my mom pointed him out and told me “now that’s the kind of guy you should be dating!” Later that day we got to talking and exchanged numbers. We stayed in touch over the summer and started dating officially when I arrived on campus in September 2003. We graduated and got engaged in 2007, and were married in July 2009.

In 2012, we welcomed our son, James, and in 2014, our daughter, Finley. We recently celebrated our 10year wedding anniversary!

My fiancé, Jamie McNamara ’15, G’16, and I met my first week at UC in 2012. My freshman year, I decided to join the cross-country team. (I didn’t run cross-country in high-school, and I had barely run more than five miles in my life.) My first day on the team just so happened to be picture day. So after rushing to the mall to find shorts that would match the rest of the team, I ran I to the gym to meet up with everyone else for our photo. I noticed Jamie talking with a teammate and asked a friend what his name was. After being introduced a few nights later, we hit it off and have been together ever since. After almost seven years together, we got engaged on July 5th, 2019, surrounded by friends and family, many

of whom went to UC. We now live in Albany with our pug, Morty, and we will be married in July 2020.

Good Sports (3) It was love at first sight when Steve Crawford ’01 and I met during our freshman year in 1997. Steve played basketball at UC, and I was on the soccer and swim teams. We met through a mutual friend, and it was an instant connection. Our first date was at a bar called Albie’s on November 3, 1997.

We’ve been together ever since, and just celebrated 17 years of marriage. We have two teenagers and an incredible, loving, hilarious family life and marriage— all thanks to Utica College.

Love is On the Air (4) Malik Gayle ’18 and I met my first day at UC in 2017 in the WPNR practicum class. As many first introductions go, I didn’t think much of it. Later that day, he asked me to join the radio station as their promotions director, and as we spent more time together, we realized we liked the same bands and had a similar sense of humor. We just celebrated our two-year anniversary and adopted our cat, Flynn. As we transition out of college and into the world, we’ll never forget the place that brought us together.

A Fateful Introduction

Love on Ice

Our UC love story is 28 years in the making. I was the student coordinator for new-student orientation during the summer of 1991. During one of the summer sessions, an orientation leader approached me with a new student and said, “This is Melissa. She’s a swimmer and a lifeguard. Talk to her.” We spent time talking that day, and played pool in the basement of North Hall for about three hours that night.

When orientation finished, I resumed my job working on the Face Book. (“Social media” in the early ’90s was a book of pictures of incoming students, along with their hometowns and interests.) I found Melissa’s picture and decided to call her.

I made up a reason to call, and we spoke for about ten minutes. It was the most nerve-wracking call I had ever made.

When she arrived on campus the next month, I was there to greet her, meet her parents, and help her move into her room in North Hall. We spent most of the opening weekend together, going to campus events, eating lunch, and working at the pool. It took me about three weeks to get up the nerve to ask her out. When I finally did, she agreed. That was September 20, 1991. Melissa Racioppa ’95, G’16 and I have been together ever since.

As young alumni and a newly married couple, we attended summer orientation dinners with the parents of incoming students. Melissa was always quick to point out that I was her orientation leader, which always seemed to elicit nervous laughter from the families.

Later, with our own children, we attended several alumni weekend celebrations and sporting events. My daughter learned to play roulette (and be pretty successful) as a 6-year old at homecoming casino nights. My son still talks about the time he wore his orange Morph suit and high-fived President Hutton while circling the Aud after goal at a hockey game. On the anniversary of our first date, Father Drobin renewed our vows in a private ceremony in Newman Center with our three children by our sides. We have participated in Convocation and Commencement ceremonies together, watching the next generation of Pioneers arrive and depart UC ready to take on whatever is next for them.

Utica College has always played a very prominent role in our lives. I returned to UC in 2006 after receiving my degree in public relations and have been working with student success and retention since then. Melissa joined the faculty in 2016 after working as a child-life specialist for over 20 years.

Utica College has been a consistent backdrop for several of the milestones in our family’s life, and I am confident the college, campus, and people (both past and present) will continue to contribute to many memorable events in our future.

Rich Racioppa ’93, Director of Student Athlete Success Utica, NY

My husband, Adam Graff ’14, and I met at Freshmen Orientation in the summer of 2010. He was a recruit for Gary Heenan and the UC men’s ice hockey program, and I, a recruit of Dave Clausen’s on the UC women’s ice hockey team. After meeting that summer, we became fast friends, and it was not long after school started that we began dating.

Throughout our whole college career we both wore the #10 jersey on our respective teams. Adam did very well at UC, racking up on points at center, while I racked up minutes in the penalty box as a defenseman!

We both graduated from UC in May 2014 and then moved to Adam’s home in Delaware with our bulldog, Margaux. Adam began working while I went on to obtain my master’s at Arcadia University. The weekend of my graduate ceremony, Adam proposed in front of all of our friends and family—a graduation party turned surprise engagement party! We were married on September 29, 2017, and shared our wed-

North Hall Love I met my husband, Ryan Harrigan ’14, at our freshman orientation in July 2011. We dated throughout undergrad (fun fact: we were both RAs as upperclassmen and were both assigned to North Hall, so for three of our four years 23

I’ve always had a “thing” for soccer players, and in the first semester of my freshman year at Utica College in 1987, I noticed a cute freshman on the men’s team. He had long legs, a shock of dark brown hair, and gray eyes.

I thought he was adorable, but our paths didn’t cross until February of second semester when I was walking with a friend through the Library Concourse. We cut through en route to

lunch to avoid the bitter Utica winds and there was the cute soccer player, sitting in the Concourse playing the piano.

My friend knew him (they both worked in the admissions office) and stopped to chat. Later I told her I thought he was cute, so with her help, we arranged for a group of his friends to meet a group of my friends at a local dance club that Saturday night. We hit it off, and the night ended with a kiss. From there, Mark Gavagan ’91 and I were always together. We attended several fraternity (Tau Kappa Epsilon) and sorority (Chi Beta Sigma) formals. He made me laugh every day with his good sense of humor, but it was really his kindness toward me and others that stole my heart for good. We just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. We have two beautiful daughters, and still laugh together every day.

A Teaching Moment My husband, Douglas Seitz ’17, and I met when we sat next to each other on the first day of our Interpersonal Communication class in January 2014. We talked a little bit, and then happened to see each other out that weekend. About three weeks into the class, he got the nerve to ask for my phone number—right in front of Professor Doug Croft. I will never forget how awkward I felt with our professor (who was teaching us how to communicate) getting a front-row seat! Five years later, we are happily married and have one “fur baby,” a goldendoodle named Zola.

A Match Made on Halloween

“When movie night officially ended the next morning, I realized I had just found my soul mate and future wife.”

I met Nicole Bruno ’00 at a Halloween party in the Strebel Student Center in 1997. I remember seeing her around campus but we never formerly met or had any meaningful communications. That night my friends dragged me to the party, and Nicole was there with her roommate and a group of friends. I did the bare minimum to be considered in costume. (I think it involved face painting, if I remember correctly.)

I showed up looking like I took an elbow to the face on bar night. I pleaded with everyone to cut me some slack considering this was my first Halloween party.

I think Nicole was either a cat or a bunny—I remember cute ears and a tail.

We casually talked among our friends but as the night went on, we had more oneon-one conversations.

A few days later we bumped into each other in North Hall. She was reluctantly cleaning her roommate’s turtle tank and asked if I would help. I must have aced the turtle-tank cleaning because she invited me to come to her next movie night with her friends.

On movie night I joined her and three or four other friends in her room. I was the new guy in their little group but they were all pretty easygoing, and it wasn’t as awkward as I thought it would be. After the movie, her friends said their goodbyes and I ended up staying and talking with her until the sun came up.

Talking to her was so easy

and natural. She told me about everything from growing up in Queens, being on the bowling team in high school, and her love for Zebbs chocolate-chip cookies. I told her about my family’s journey from Jamaica to Brooklyn, and my love of all things Tom Jones.

When movie night officially ended the next morning I realized two things: One, I was going to sleep for the rest of the day. And two, I had just found my soul mate and future wife.

A few weeks later, we were in between classes and I popped in to the Pioneer Cafe to grab a bite to eat before my next class. When she approached me for a hug I caught her off guard and went in for the kiss. My sneak attack led to her looking around sheepishly and almost immediately asking for our relationship status update. It was a real fight or flight moment, but with no second thoughts I made the decision that would change my life forever. We have been together ever since.

We both graduated in 2000 and then did the long-distance thing for two and a half years. Nicole was working in NYC and getting her graduate degree at Columbia University, and I studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. I proposed to her in my final year of my MFA program, and we got married in the summer of 2004. We have two daughters. November 18, 2019 will mark 21 years since that first public kiss.

3 Getting down to brass tacks with six successful—and surprising—alumni From the world of college football, to a busy cardiac ICU, to the MTV stage with Lizzo at the Video Music Awards, there’s one thing Utica College alumni have in common: they’re busy—very busy. So when Utica was lucky enough to score some one-on-one time with these six movers and shakers, we had no use for small talk. Instead, we had just three important questions. Their answers informed, enlightened, and made us laugh—all with no time to waste.

Akira Armstrong ’05 Founder and CEO, Pretty BIG Movement It’s been a pretty big year

for Akira Armstrong ’05.

A dancer since childhood, Armstrong made her national debut more than a decade ago in Beyonce’s 2007 “Get Me Bodied” music video. The gig led to more work, but the opportunities for plus-size dancers were limited. Even after years on the scene, she felt she still had to prove to casting agents and choreographers that full-figured women could be dancers—professional dancers—each time she auditioned.

So she decided to create her own opportunity. In 2008, Armstrong founded Pretty BIG Movement with a small group of fellow professional dancers she’d met around NYC. The group hosted workshops 25

and performed steadily, but they didn’t hit it big until 2015, when Pretty BIG competed on NBC’s America’s Got Talent.

Though they didn’t take the title, they advanced to the final rounds, putting Pretty BIG Movement, and full-figured women in general, on a national stage.

Fast-forward to August 2019, when of-the-moment singer and rapper Lizzo tapped Armstrong to join her onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards.

The joyous, powerful performance presented full-figured dancers to 1.93 million viewers nationwide, with the YouTube clip boasting nearly 7 million more views in the months that followed. It was a national coming-out for not just Lizzo, but for Akira Armstrong and the empowering movement she’d created.

But it didn’t end there.

Shortly after the MTV performance, Pretty BIG’s social media content drew the attention of Dove.

Armstrong’s message of self-love and body positivity fit perfectly in line with Dove’s latest campaign focused on challenging beauty stereotypes. The brand produced a web mini-documentary about Armstrong’s journey to self-acceptance, helping launch Pretty BIG’s message to a new, larger audience, and the response has been profound. In addition to the thousands of likes and shares on the video were heartfelt comments like this one: “I needed this growing up.

I have been plus size all

of my life and my passion has always been dance.

Unfortunately, I didn’t fit the image of the industry.

I experienced much of the rejection [Armstrong has].

I counted myself out, but God didn’t. Today I am CEO of a dance enrichment program. I hope you read this message because you need to know you inspire. Not to mention y’all moves and choreography is fire!”

And for Armstrong, the movement continues.

1. How did your experience at UC prepare you for everything you’ve accomplished with Pretty BIG Movement?

“My sophomore year I became the president of

A.I.M (Africa In Motion) dance group on campus.

The experience prepared me for a position of leadership and taught me how to work with different personalities, organize events, choreograph dance routines, be a creative director, and so much more.”

2. What was going through your head onstage at the VMAs? “I was thinking about every little girl that may feel she can’t be where I’m standing. While attending UC, I always knew my purpose and knew I wanted to continue dance as my career, but never thought I would be on a national level. A long process of love, talent, and dedication was all left on the stage.”

3. We have to ask—what’s Lizzo like in person?

“Lizzo is a cool, vibrant, funny, yet humble, person.”

Maya Ana Callender ’16 Director of Football Operations, Princeton University Maya Ana Callender has loved football for as long as she can remember. Growing up in the Bronx, New York, Callender was responsible for getting her brother to football practice on time after school each day. What other adolescent girls might have considered an annoying chore helped inspire not just Callender’s love for the game, but also for the countless logistics required behind the scenes.

Before graduating from UC in 2016 with a B.S. in marketing management, Callender served as manager for the Utica College football team, doing everything from managing the team’s social media, to scheduling practices, to booking hotels and transportation when the team was on the road. Today, just

three years after graduation, Callender is playing on an even bigger field: She’s director of football operations at Princeton University—and the only female DOF in the Ivy League.

1. At Princeton you manage more than 100 coaches and players.

What’s your secret to staying organized?

“I always try to stay ahead of the team’s weekly schedule by having everything in writing.

This helps if someone has a question about scheduling, because there is no guessing and planning on the spot, rather, its adjusting the schedule. It makes my job so much easier to manage if I have each game-week itinerary already laid out, so if the Head Coach asks about a particular day, I can flip through my binder to that week and tell that coach exactly what is scheduled or what we need to change.

When I am not scheduling a week ahead, I am the liaison between the football staff and the athletic department.

Communication is key in this profession and I am always working with the event operations department for home games, facilities for our practice fields, and compliance to make sure we are all on the same page.”

2. Your best advice for someone who wants to work in college football?

“Start where the team needs help to succeed, even if [the task] is not ideal or glamorous. I must have had every job with UC football. I was an office and recruiting assistant, videographer, equipment manager and operations assistant for all junior varsity games.

No job is too small. If you work hard and are willing to learn, good things will come.”

3. Superbowl 2020— who will win?

“The New York Jets.”

Dawn Chmielewski ’83 Senior Editor, Forbes As a journalism student at UC, Dawn Chmielewski dreamed of working for The New York Times, “like any budding journalist who grew up in the Watergate era,” she says. Instead, Chmielewski spent nearly a decade working for the most revered newspaper on the other coast: The Los Angeles Times. As a staff writer, she found her niche reporting on entertainment, technology and media, and went on to senior editor positions at technology news website Re/code, Deadline Hollywood, and most recently, Forbes, where she’s served as senior editor for media, entertainment, and technology since January 2019. Today, the award-winning journalist is working on her first book with former colleague Dade Hayes, Binge Times: Inside The High-Stakes Scramble By HBO, Disney, Hulu (... And Apple, Amazon and Everyone Else) To Catch Netflix, an in-depth exploration of the streaming video zeitgeist. It hits bookshelves in 2021.

1. Congrats on your upcoming book! Tell us more about it.

“It’s really the first book to bring readers inside this cultural and business transformation of streaming video.

It will capitalize on all of the color and voice and incident in the story of traditional media companies and technology giants racing to catch up with Netflix. Along the way, it will explain key turning points, explore the competitive landscape, introduce an ensemble cast of indelible characters, and trace a historical arc. Built into the narrative are the questions of whether the incumbents can reinvent themselves, and whether executives steeped in the Hollywood’s old ways can fashion a new vision for the future.”

2. What’s the last show you binge-watched?

“HBO’s Succession. I was drawn in to the show after profiling the Redstone’s family saga for the Forbes 400 issue of the magazine. It’s a riveting tale of power, ambition and ruthlessness that feels ripped from the headlines. Lately I also love Amazon’s Fleabag, the Emmy Award-winning comedy from Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who created another of my favorite shows, Killing Eve).

I’m in awe of her ability to take the viewer through a range of emotions, from laughing at her acid-wit to cringing at her awkwardness to weeping at her painful confessions.”

3. Favorite class at UC? “Kim Landon’s Reporting on Public Affairs class. It offered an introduction to the caffeine-fueled adrenaline ride that is journalism.”

Vinny Rinaldi ’08 Head of Addressable Media, The Hershey Company There’s a good chance you’ve heard of Vinny Rinaldi’s last two employers: a little tech start-up called Google, and a Pennsylvania chocolate manufacturer named Hershey. With heavy hitters like those on his resume, it’s hard to believe Rinaldi graduated from UC just over a decade ago. The business management alum and former ice hockey player spent two years as Google’s senior programmatic account manager, and in 2017, moved on to his current role at Hershey, where his work has already earned Rinaldi a spot on Ad Age’s list of “40 Under 40 People Shaping the Media Industry” in September 2019. The magazine lauded his approach to “data-driven media buying … [which has] led Hershey to gaining $4 million incremental sales last Halloween with a program to improve sales in underperforming markets.” A sweet honor, indeed.

1. You’re head of addressable media at Hershey. What exactly do you do?

“I oversee all our media investment—$350 million a year on TV and digital advertising for every single brand within our portfolio (Reese’s, Twizzlers, Hershey chocolate, etc.). It’s such a mindset shift from where I used to work in advertising technology and at Google. Where my UC education comes into play is in business relevancy. I’m not just buying media related to how much chocolate we sell; we’re also part of Wall Street. If we need cacao beans for chocolate, what’s happening in the global market matters. It’s helped me go back to what I learned in college and use the business perspective I developed at UC.” 2. What’s the most valuable class you took at UC? “I learned a lot in my business courses, especially the higher level ones, but I learned even more from getting involved in the community, doing things like the Boilermaker and the Heart Run and Walk. To me, that’s what helped define my time at Utica more than my education.

It helped me grow into the person I am today, how I approach things in business, my personal life—those aspects all stem from those four years in Utica.”

3. Best candy of all time?

“Reese’s.”

Opeyemi Ogunwomoju ’16 Cardiac Intensive Care Nurse, Mount Sinai Hospital, NYC When she remembers being hospitalized as a child, Opeyemi Ogunwomoju doesn’t recall scary needles or intimidating doctors. She remembers the nice men and women in scrubs who played games at her bedside, brought her snacks, and made her laugh on “joy rides” through the children’s unit in a wheelchair. Only later did Ogunwomoju realize those special friends had a name: They were nurses.

“Those interactions would shape the rest of my life,” she says. They would also shape her career path.

After earning a B.S. in nursing from Utica College in 2016, Ogunwomoju went on to secure a position as a clinical nurse at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. In December 2018, she was promoted to the hospital’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, one of the country’s best and busiest ICUs, where she cares for patients experiencing the most dire cardiac emergencies.

1. What made you choose Utica College to earn your nursing degree?

“I grew up in the Bronx, and I wanted to break off on my own for college somewhere far, but not too far. I Googled ‘Best Nursing Programs in New York State,’ and one of the top schools was Utica College. My mom and I visited campus, and we were sold!”

2. Favorite class at UC? “Critical Care Nursing with Professor Cynthia Love Williams. I remember meeting with Professor Williams once when some material in the textbook confused me. I told her, and she looked at me and said, ‘You’re going too far in the book.’ I had read way beyond what we were assigned and started to study things we hadn’t even discussed in class yet, but I was determined to understand it. I should have known that ICU life would be my future in that moment!”

3. Life in the ICU has got to be stressful. What makes it worth it to you?

“Talking to patients, which I know sounds obvious, but most of my patients are intubated or sedated when they come to the ICU, and some patients are even paralyzed through medications. So it’s incredibly rewarding when a patient recovers enough to talk with me. Working as a nurse can leave you stressed and not feeling appreciated, but seeing your hard work pay off through the health of your patients makes it all worth it.”

Stephen Alcala ’73 Owner and Founder, Pronto Pest Management In April 2019, Reader’s Digest served their readers with a definitive list of each state’s best bed bug exterminator.

Perhaps a sign of a national bed bug epidemic, yes, but also a sign that Steve Alcala has really made it. A former UC football player, Alcala founded Pronto Pest Management, named Michigan’s best bed bug pro, in 1982. The small business, based in Oak Park, Michigan, has grown into a multi-million dollar company with 27 employees and several major contracts, removing pests for some of the country’s biggest corporations (who shall remain nameless—and bug-less, thanks to Alcala). Unlike many of his competitors, Alcala’s company uses specially trained K-9s (yes, dogs) that can sniff out critters better and faster than humans or machines. But the real secret to Alcala’s success, he says, is building relationships, solving problems, and a hint of good old fashioned showmanship.

1. Any lessons learned at UC that apply to the world of pest management?

“My time at UC opened my eyes to what success was and what it looked like. I grew up as an only child. We didn’t have a lot of money, and we moved around a lot.

When I got to Utica, I saw successful people who had good educations, nice homes, and cars—people who didn’t just talk about doing big things, they actually accomplished them. It made an impact on me. I realized I wanted success, too.”

2. You say you’re a bit of a showman on the job. How so?

“Well, here’s one of my favorite stories. My crew and I had been working in an old government building in downtown Detroit. They had a rodent problem, and we’d been successful at eradicating most of the rats, but we just couldn’t get the dominant male, which is usually the biggest. Eventually one of my guys and I had him trapped in a bookshelf in an office. I whacked him with a club. I walked out of the office and a crowd of employees had gathered in the hallway. I held up the rat by the tail and they cheered. I was pretty proud of that one.”

3. After nearly 40 years in the business, is there any type of pest that still makes your skin crawl?

“Nope. Nothing.”

Enduring Lessons Legendary journalist and UC alum Richard Benedetto ’65 on his new book— a “love letter” to the city he says shaped his decades-spanning career.

As a former White House reporter, a founding member of USA Today, and a political columnist for Gannett News Service, Richard Benedetto’s journalism career has taken him all over the world. But through it all, his heart remained in Utica, where Benedetto ’65 was born and raised—and where his journalism career began.

The former columnist for the Utica Observer-Dispatch is celebrating his time in the Mohawk Valley with a new book, Around and About, A reporter’s love letter to the people and places of Utica and Oneida County, a collection of his columns from 1974 to 1976.

We talked to Benedetto, who now teaches journalism and political science at American University, about the book, his favorite Utica memories, and the Ray Simon mantra that has stayed with him for more than five decades.

There are 121 of your columns in the book. Do you have a favorite?

One of my favorites is about my first-grade teacher from Albany Elementary School in Utica. I interviewed her just before she retired. The thing that struck me was how she was so embarrassed to think she did anything important in her career. I said, “How many children did you teach to read?” She thought about it and came up with the number 2,000. It made her realize what an impact she’d had on my life and so many others.

What makes your time in Utica so special to you?

That was the time when I came into my own as a newspaper reporter—the time I had the most fun. One of the great

things about reporting in Utica and being from Utica was that I knew so many people. People would feel free to criticize or praise something I wrote, and I felt as though I was achieving something and making a difference in the community.

You spent decades as a political reporter in Washington, covering the Reagan, Bush, and Clinton administrations, and every political campaign since 1984. How has political journalism changed since then, especially now in the era of Trump?

I use this phrase all the time, and it goes back to Ray Simon: “Reporting is easy. You go places other people don’t go, and you come back and you tell them what you saw and heard.”

People need information, and our job is to give people good information. At UC, we were taught the right way: to write stories in a clear way without a lot of baggage. The name of the game is to communicate to people and help them understand what you want them to learn. Journalism isn’t hard, we make it hard.

‘Just Watch Me’ Dr. Anthony Baird’s convocation address to the class of 2023 began with a bang—or rather, a snap.

“Take out your mobile device and take a picture,” he instructed the new students.

“Snap it, tag it, and post it.

This is the beginning of your new beginning—the foundation of your success.”

Baird ’91, a distinguished alumnus, spent 25 years as Director of Corporate Programs Development at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Today, he is Principal Consultant and Manager of I.A.M~EPPIC

Enterprises, a professional coaching firm.

In his address, Baird encouraged students to “be open to the opportunities within your circumstances,” he said.

“They serve as the foundation to your educational, personal, and professional development.”

In closing, he urged the class of 2023 to repeat a mantra of self-reliance: “Look to the person to the left and to the right of you and tell them, ‘I am going to complete this degree— with or without you. Just watch me.’”

Brvenik Takes Helm of UC Board of Trustees Robert A. Brvenik ’77 began his four-year term as chairperson of the Utica College Board of Trustees on June 1, 2019. Brvenik, former principal partner of Paragon Outlet Partners, helped fund the Brvenik Center for Business Education in downtown Utica, which opened and was dedicated in 2016. He succeeds Mark A. Pilipczuk ’88.

PIONEER PAST Ah, 1986—when the hair was big, but the computers were bigger. A precursor to the personal computer, these video terminals started appearing on UC’s campus in the late 80s, and paved the way for more advanced PCs later in the decade.

SUPPORT As a journalism student at UC, Kim Landon ’75 had an exciting opportunity: She had been asked to serve as editor of the yearbook.

“It makes me emotional remembering it,” says a tearful Landon. “That one gesture and the support of those funds have made all the difference.”

It was an offer Landon was prepared to decline.

After graduating from UC in 1975, Landon went on to join the public relations faculty, thanks, once again, to a meaningful gesture.

“My family was going through a difficult financial time, and I knew I’d probably have to get a job off-campus in order to pay tuition and stay at UC,” she recalls. Making time for a position with the yearbook, it seemed, wasn’t in the cards—until thenDirector of Student Activities Dick Frank heard about her situation.

“He just looked at me, smiled, and said, ‘let me get back to you on that,’” says Landon.

In his way, Frank was assuring Landon that he’d figure out how to help her bridge the financial gap.

And he did. Through funds made available by donors to the College, Landon received a scholarship that allowed her to both join the yearbook staff and stay focused on earning her degree without working off-campus.

“Ray Simon hired me and gave me a chance when I had no business teaching journalism,” she says. And through Simon’s mentorship, Landon soon became one of the department’s—and the College’s—most beloved professors. (In fact, on UC’s first Superhero Day in April 2019, Landon, now a Professor Emerita, was far and away the most-cited inspiring “superhero” by UC alumni.)

So today, with her participation in planned giving, Landon hopes her financial support will go just as far in impacting a UC student’s future.

“Utica College gave me a life,” she says. “And who could ask for a better life?”

ADVANCEMENT UPDATES

A Record-Breaking Gift UC receives the largest bequest in its history.

President Laura Casamento announced in October that the College has received the largest bequest in its history. UC will receive $2.35 million from the Lotis B. Howland trust. The gift is also the largest single cash gift in the College’s history.

“Ms. Howland’s generosity will enrich the Utica College community and positively affect the educational experience for current and future generations of UC students in many ways,” Casamento said.

Paul Steates, Howland’s attorney, said that Howland passed away last October at the age of 98. Born in Mt. Vernon, Georgia, she moved to Utica and was married to Alfred Smith, and after his passing she later married John Howland. She was an avid

Putting Safety First Two grants to help fund vital safety initiatives and improvements across campus A $298,330 grant from the Department of Justice will help fund a new safety initiative, Safe Trax, designed to enhance prevention education and services to survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking.

Announced in September, the Safe Trax program combines resources from internal partners across the College, the YWCA of Mohawk Valley, Mohawk Valley Health System, and the Utica Police Department. The team will work to enhance safety, provide support and services, support efforts to hold offenders accountable, and improve overall campus response to sexual assault and domestic violence.

“Eliminating domestic violence, dating violence, and sexual assault on college campuses starts with education and continues with making sure survivors have access to the resources they need. I am proud to have fought for these important dollars and I will never stop working to end campus violence,” said Congressman Anthony Brindisi, who attended the news conference announcing the grant. “I know Utica College will put this grant money to good use.”

Earlier this year, UC received a $312,711 grant from the Higher Education Capital Matching Grant program to fund security improvements to public areas of the campus, including the installation of parking lot security cameras, additional external emergency phone “blue light” stations, new exterior LED lighting, and additional sidewalks. The grant will also aid in the acquisition and installation of new doors, locks, and access control units on academic buildings, a call recording system, a mass notification siren/PA system, and a firewall system. In addition, this award will help UC purchase an ATV/UTV vehicle for campus emergency medical services.

Good Sports The first UC Pioneer Athletic Giving Challenge scores a goal During one week in September, more than 1,200 donors helped raise $42,148 for Utica College athletes as part of the first-ever UC Pioneer Athletic Giving Challenge.

Though men’s lacrosse took the title for most donors with 191 individuals making gifts to the team, all 700-plus athletes won, thanks to generous gifts from UC students, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. Tanner Stewart ’10, a former UC lacrosse player who is now a financial advisor for Northwestern Mutual in New Hartford, NY, was one of many who helped organize and contribute to the Challenge.

“As former UC athlete, it gave me a sense of pride to give back to the college athletic community,” he says. “I’ve always believed one should leave a place better than they

Above and Beyond: Ryan Oliver ’19 Utica College linebacker Ryan Oliver ’19 doesn’t limit his good work to the playing field or the classroom.

For years, Oliver has been committed to his volunteer work with the Haiti Rehabilitation Project, a non-profit created to serve people in need of physical and occupational therapy services in Gonaives, Haiti. Along with the group, Oliver has traveled to the village to provide rehabilitation services to children who have cerebral palsy or other disabilities, and to teach local therapists techniques so that they can continue to provide services after they leave. Back in Utica, he participates in year-round fundraisers to help support the Project from afar.

This fall, Oliver was honored for his efforts. The American Football Coaches’ Association announced that Oliver had been selected to the 2019 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. The prestigious award is presented each year to a handful of college football players who are actively involved with a charitable organization group while also maintaining a strong academic standing.

As part of the honor, Oliver is invited to New Orleans, Louisiana, to participate in a special community service project alongside his fellow honorees and Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, Tim Tebow. He will also be recognized at halftime of the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl on January 1, 2020.

In a ceremony at the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center in September, UC’s head football coach Blaise Faggiano presented Oliver with the award.

“Ryan Oliver has excelled on the field and in academics, and has gone above and beyond in his community service between all the things our program does, and then that extra initiative he has demonstrated with the Haiti Rehab Project,” said Faggiano. “He embodies everything that our program believes in.”

Switching Paths, Finding Success: Samantha Bigornia ’19 When Samantha Bigornia graduated from the University of Florida in 2018 with a degree in kinesiology, she was excited to begin her career in the fitness industry.

“I had a passion for helping and educating people on how to live healthier lifestyles,” she says.

But it wasn’t long before Bigornia realized that her work was limited to those who had access—and the physical ability—to work out in the upscale recreation center where she worked.

It was then that she began researching a new career path in nursing.

“I decided that a career in nursing would enable me to serve people of all levels of health and different backgrounds, and care for people from more than just an exercise perspective,” she says.

After searching online, she discovered Utica College’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, which would not only allow Bigornia to earn her degree in just 16 months, but would make for an easy commute: UC’s St. Petersburg campus was just miles from Bigornia’s home in Tampa, Florida.

“The hybrid nature of the program allowed me to set my own schedule and still pursue fitness as a hobby,” she says.

In the program, students complete clinical rotations in the BayCare Health System, UC’s clinical partner in Florida.

Bigornia found she thrived in the fast-paced medical setting.

“My clinical experiences really helped supplement my learning beyond the classroom,” she says. “They gave me the chance to practice my hands-on nursing skills.”

The practice paid off. In October 2019, Bigornia was offered a position in Vanderbilt University’s Nurse Residency Program in Nashville, Tennessee. She will start the program on the hospital’s Adult Acute Surgery Track in February 2020—less than two years after making that fateful decision to switch career paths.

“My hope is that I am able to take the knowledge, passion, and skills I have learned in Utica’s ABSN program and further develop these skills through taking care of post-operative patients at Vanderbilt.”
