FACILITIES ASSOCIATE VICE CHANCELLOR RAISES MONEY IN “JAIL OR BAIL” FUNDRAISER An Annual Event to Benefit the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Emile David, associate vice chancellor of facilities, volunteered for the “jail or bail” fundraising event as part of the Annual StepOut Kick-Off held in September. It was a fun-filled few hours as Emile professed his innocence while being escorted away in actual handcuffs by the UTHSC Campus Police. Emile, along with other UTHSC staff volunteered to be picked up and taken to a mock holding cell in the Madison Plaza here on campus. He was only there a few hours due to the dedication of friends, family and co-workers making donations toward his bail in support of the yearly fundraising extravaganza. During his brief stay, Emile tried to escape (a few times) which earned the title “one of the best (worst) criminals” they’ve had since hosting the event. It made for a fun-filled few hours all to benefit a worthy cause!

Every dollar raised will help fund research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes.

TEAM UTHSC (Medicine-Endocrinology) used this really neat way of raising “bail” as a method to contribute to their annual team donation to ADA. Donor contributions help in the fight to improve the lives of millions of Americans living with diabetes as well as those who are at risk.

CAMPUS PROJECTS, EMPLOYEES AND EVENTS 930 MADISON, 6TH FLOOR Laura Mooney, Project Manager

The 930 Madison building 6th floor lobby (College of Health Professions offices) has a new look. Furniture has been replaced with the exception of a few chairs. Brand new artwork will be added to the west wall and a new reception desk is on the way. Facilities painters, electrical, custodial and carpenters all worked on the renovation. Take a look at before (bottom row) and after (top row) pictures. Looks great team!

SAFETY TRAINING - NFPA70E

Scott Campbell, Campus Safety Officer Facilities electricians and HVAC staff attended a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E electrical safety training class recently (pictured below) provided by Pearson Safety Services. Why is this training important?

Injuries from electric shock and arc flash hazards are the sixth leading cause of occupational fatality in the U.S. On average, approximately 2,000 workers each year receive hospital treatment due to electrical burns. The training requires safe work practices to protect personnel by reducing exposure to major electrical hazards. It also helps companies and employees avoid workplace injuries and fatalities due to shock, electrocution, arc flash, arc blast and assists in complying with OSHA 1910 Subpart S and OSHA 1926 Subpart K. Work practices covered by NFPA 70E include installation, inspection, operation, maintenance, and demolition of electric conductors, electric equipment, signaling and communications conductors and equipment, and raceways.

CUSTODIAL EMPLOYEES RECEIVE ANNUAL CERTIFICATION Edwin Jeffres, Superintendent

The Facilities Custodial Annual Certification program was held September 19th and 20th (pictures below). The approach was a little different this year, and included various speakers and vendors whose custodial supplies are used across the UTHSC campus.

The vendor-led training covered proper use, safety, and best practices of floor care (hard flooring, tile, carpet), laboratories, restrooms, offices, and classrooms. Facilitators included Eric Hickman, Windsor floor machine expert, along with Drew Murrah and Sean Allard from American Paper & Twine. All custodial employees received a certificate of completion. Attending to congratulate employees was Emile David, associate vice chancellor, and Kenny Bradshaw, director of the facilities department, along with Chandra Alston, associate vice chancellor of human resources.

URSELA HOWELL RECEIVES $1000 SPOT BONUS CUSTODIAL FOREMAN - DUNN DENTAL BUILDING Awarded by Chandra Alston, Associate Vice Chancellor, Human Resources Ursela Howell was presented with a $1,000 spot bonus from Chandra Alston during the custodial certification training. Highlights from the surprise presentation and the many comments Chandra received regarding Ursela’s work performance are below.

Chandra Alston: “There is a person in custodial services who has demonstrated RESPECT and VALUE for their team. They’ve turned around a unit, building (Dunn) and team. For the first three years of my tenure as AVC, I had to deal with discipline, complaints and terminations from this department. Since Ursela was hired in 2016, I have not heard ONE PEEP, but have heard praises and accolades for this person in the last few weeks.”

Ursela’s team: “To a friend, sister ... boss, job well done! You are doing great as a supervisor and a person can’t ask for more from a supervisor than to treat you with respect. She’s a person that goes by the golden rule ... do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Thank you sooooo much!; My foreman is the glue that holds our crew together. You are the best supervisor I have ever had, and I have had a LOT; Thank you for just being you. You have been honest, fair, hardworking and a leader; I am so happy to have been a part of your team and I am grateful for your leadership; My wonderful foreman is kind, understanding, reasonable and easy to get along with.”

Ramona Ivy (Dunn Bldg Manager): “The foreman keeps me informed and is the BEST one we have EVER had. I am sooooo lucky to have my foreman!”

KEY AND LOCK CONTROL MANAGEMENT Key and lock control management is under Facilities Administration. If you need to turn in, transfer, have new keys issued, or have locksmithing needs do the following: 1) Complete a request form found on the facilities website under the key control tab (https://www.uthsc.edu/ facilities/key-control.php).

2) Attach the form to an Archibus work order request (link found at the bottom of each page of Facilities website).

We are located in the Physical Plant Building (room 224). Office hours are 7:45 am – 4:45 pm, Monday through Friday. For further assistance, please call 901.448.6837.

FACILITIES TRAINING OPEN ENROLLMENT AND BENEFITS Facilitators: Gina Curry and Debbie Jackson, Human Resources THANK YOU to the HR training specialists for facilitating two days of training for all Facilities employees in the month of September!

Training was held in GEB classrooms over the two day period to educate every facilities employee on the upcoming changes so they could make informed decisions regarding benefit choices. Employees were provided detail and allowed to ask questions during the training classes.

Facilities has a large organization (over 200 employees) and we appreciate the extra effort put forth to ensure our employees receive the knowledge and training that’s provided during this period. They both did an outstanding job of covering the employees’ various shift times and we extend our thanks for their time and effort to accommodate the facilities organization.
