DEPARTMENT NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS FACULTY ANNOUCEMENTS EVAN S. GLAZER, MD, PHD, FACS, FSSO

DAVID SHIBATA, MD, FACS, FSSO, FASCRS

Associate Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, performed two major milestone procedures this quarter at Regional One Health (ROH) Medical Center. He and his team performed the first “commercial insurance” liver perfusion at ROH. This procedure was part of a research trial for metastatic ocular melanoma that received FDA and Medicare approval. The team also performed the first HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy and cytoreduction) at ROH.

Chair, Department of Surgery, Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, along with collaborators from Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT and Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa, FL was awarded a $4 million R01 research grant (R01 CA276496-01) from the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health for a study entitled, “Body Composition and AdiposityAssociated Thromboinflammation in Colorectal Cancer Prognosis.” The project will address key questions on the impact of body composition and adipositypromoted thromboinflammation on CRC treatmentrelated toxicities and survival. Dr. Shibata is also CoInvestigator/Site PI on a newly funded $2 million R01 research grant (R01AG083580-01) from the National Institute of Aging/National Institute of Health entitled “Geriatric Assessment Domains in Relation to Treatment Outcomes Among Older Adults with Colorectal Cancer”, a collaboration with researchers from Huntsman Cancer Institute.

IAN SOLSKY, MD, MA Assistant Professor, Division of Surgical Oncology, was appointed to the National Cancer Comphrensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Occult Primary guidelines panel.

REGAN WILLIAMS, MD, MS, FACS, FAAP Associate Professor, Division of Pediatric Surgery, was awarded a two-year $475,000 grant from the Shelby County Health Department 2024 Community Violence Intervention & Prevention Services. Also, she was cited as an expert in news articles appearing in the Knoxville Daily Sun, The NY Times and Hoodline.com discussing gun-related violence and bleeding control measures.

OLIVIA DELOZIER, MD Assistant Professor, Division of Endocrine and General Surgery, was elected as President of the Harwell Wilson Surgical Society and was appointed to the National Cancer Comphrensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Thyroid Cancer guidelines panel.

MAUNIL BHATT, MD Assistant Professor, Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, delivered a presentation entitled, “Traumatic Thoracic Aortic Coarctation after Blunt Thoracic Aortic Injury Mandates Emergent Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair,” at the American Surgical Association’s annual meeting held April 4-6, 2024 in Washington DC. Based on the ROH experience, the authors recommended early surgical repair of this specific type of injury to the aorta. The American Surgical Association was founded in 1880 and is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious surgical organization. Its members include the nation’s most prominent surgeons from the country’s leading academic medical institutions. UTHSC Professor and Chief, Division of Vascular Surgery, Dr. Erica Mitchell served as the senior author and sponsoring member.

Assistant Professor, Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care was honored with the 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award by the UT Health Science Center Student Government Association Executive Council (SGAEC) and the Office of Student Life. The council evaluated 30 nominees and supporting documentation submitted by students. He was one of two faculty members in the College of Medicine to receive the award.

Professor and Chief, Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, moderated a panel entitled, “Women’s Section: Vascular Trauma – What I Need to Know in the Middle of the Night,” at the Vascular Annual Meeting held June 19-22 in Chicago.

Assistant Professor, Division of Transplantation, was named Associate Chief of Staff-Elect at Methodist University Hospital.

SASKYA BYERLY, MD

THOMAS NG, MD Professor and Chief, Division of Thoracic Surgery, has been named as a Featured Section Editor in The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

The journal is the official publication of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and presents original, peer-reviewed articles on diseases of the heart, great vessels, lungs and thorax with emphasis on surgical interventions.

Assistant Professor, Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care, was a featured physican in Memphis Magazine’s Top Doctors’ edition for June 2024. Dr. Byerly has been a faculty member in the Department of Surgery since 2020. She spoke about her time at UT Health Science Center and serving patients at the Elvis Presley Trauma Center at Regional One Health. The edition recognizes physicians from around the Mid-South.

Fellow in Plastic Surgery Adult Reconstructive. Dr. Asserson attended California Northern University College of Medicine for medical school and completed his pre-residency training at the University of New Mexico Hospital. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in hand surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Fellow in Plastic Surgery Burn. Dr. Karmacharya obtained his medical degree at College of Medical Science in Kathmandu University in Nepal, Italy, afterwhich, he completed a fellowship in minimally invasive urology at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore.

Fellow in Pediatric Plastic Surgery. Dr. Davtyan graduated from medical school and received his general residency training at Yerevan State Medical University in Yerevan, Armenia. Recently, he completed an acute burn surgery/surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston, TX.

Fellow in Complex General Surgical Oncology. Dr. Aitken graduated with her medical degree from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. She completed her general surgery residency training at Memorial Healthcare System in Hollywood, FL.

Fellow in Plastic Surgery Burn. Dr. Davtyan attended medical school and received his general residency training at Yerevan State Medical University in Yerevan, Armenia. He served as chief of surgery at Akhuryan Regional Hospital in Akhuryan, Armenia. Recently, he completed clinical training in trauma/surgical critical care surgery at Yerevan State Medical University and a clinical rotation in general surgery at Glendale Adventist Medical Center in Glendale, CA.

JOEL BRAVERMAN, MD Fellow in Trauma/Surgical Critical Care. Dr. Braverman graduated with his medical degree from Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences State University of New York in Buffalo, NY. He received his general surgery residency training at Rush University /John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in Chicago, IL.

UT HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER’S DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT LEARNING IN MEMPHIS Christian Streck, MD says his time in Memphis provided strong foundation for his career and life

Dr. Christian (Chris) J. Streck, Jr., Class of 2006, was raised in Greensboro, North Carolina as the son of a general surgeon. Although Chris spent a significant amount of time shadowing his father when he was young, he was considering a career in law prior to one in medicine. As an undergraduate at Duke University, he comajored in biology and history.

Ultimately, his studies compelled him to pursue admission to

Chris attended medical school at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC where his first clinical rotation was in general surgery. Although he had initially felt inclined towards pediatrics, it was during this experience that he realized he truly belonged in the operating room. After finishing in Winston-Salem, he began general surgery residency at UT Health Science Center in 1999. He recalls being very happy with the high volume of clinical and operative experience early in his training. “I remember calling my father on the phone and telling him that this is the greatest thing, that they are letting me operate.” Dr. Streck felt like Memphis was a blessing in disguise, “It was a lucky fit for me. It wasn’t what I thought I wanted in terms of a residency program, but when I arrived in Memphis, I realized that this was a great situation and was a huge influence on me and my career path.”

Today, Dr. Streck is a Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. He is the pediatric trauma medical director and was recently named the Vice-Chair of Education. Previously, he served for eight years as MUSC’s general surgery residency program director. Dr. Streck and his wife have thoroughly enjoyed raising their family in Charleston. They have 4 children: Allie (21), Christian (19), Grant (16), and Chase (12).

As a family they enjoy attending the kids’ sporting events and spendng time together on the water. Chris and Maria make an effort to prioritize their time to allow for exercise together and have recently picked up pickleball.

Early in residency, Dr. Streck rotated at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital, and it opened his eyes to a career path that he previously did not know existed. Pediatric surgery allowed him to combine his love for operating and his interest in taking care of children. During his time in residency, he spent two years in the labratory of Dr. Andrew Davidoff at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital where he had a very productive research experience. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery at UT Health Science Center, training under many of the individuals who had turned him on to this calling. In all, Chris spent nine years in Memphis. During his second year, he married Maria Rudisill, who he initially met when they were in medical school at Wake Forest. Maria completed both her residency in pediatrics and fellowship in Allergy-

In June, Dr. Streck returned to Memphis for the 51st annual Harwell Wilson Surgical Society Annual Research Symposium and Awards Banquet as the invited alumni speaker and spoke on the topic, “Good Planning for Better Scanning: Evaluation of Pediatric Blunt Abdominal Trauma.”

He noted he was glad to be back in Memphis and be able to participate in honoring former Chair and Professor Emeritus, Timothy Fabian, MD. “He was my chair the whole 9

time I was a resident and as a result, I have a specific focus on pediatric trauma and trauma research. As a researcher, a lot of what I’ve focused on has been based on on my experiences with Dr. Fabian. Had I not come to Memphis and taken care of so many injured patients and had Dr. Fabian as my chair, I don’t think this would have been my focus and my career.”

Dr. David Shibata, Professor and Chair, UT Health Science Center Department of Surgery, was named the receipient of the 2024 UT President’s Award in the Bold and Impactful category. Based on the BE ONE UT values, these awards are the highest honor a UT employee can receive. This award honors someone who serves the state by tackling grand challenges and makes a difference by thinking big and serving with a purpose. As the executive director and chief medical officer of the UT Health Science Center Cancer Program, he was recognized for his vision in developing the cancer program with partner hospital Regional One Health. All the honorees were formally recognized on Aug. 1, 2024 by President Boyd and his Be One UT cabinet at an event held in Nashville, TN. NEW FACULTY PEDAIATRIC CARDIOTHROACIC BRET METTLER, MD, FACS Dr. Bret Mettler will join the UT Health Science Center Department of Surgery as Associate Professor and Division Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. His current role is the Director of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Bloomberg Children’s Center at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of South Dakota. Dr. Mettler completed his internship and residency in general surgery at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio, TX. He subsequently completed a research fellowship in the Cardiac Tissue Engineering Laboratory at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

On May 29, Marjorie J. Arca, MD served as an invited Grand Rounds Lecturer in Pediatrics Surgery. Arca is Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, Division Chief of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She is the Surgeon-in-Chief at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester, NY. She presented on the topic, “The Road Less Travelled: The Journey of Women and Minorities in Academic Surgery.”

SURGICAL ONCOLOGY ANNUAL CANCER SYMPOSIUM NOV. 9, 2024 | MEMPHIS, TN The UT Health Science Center Surgical Oncology Annual Cancer Symposium will feature a comprehensive multidisciplinary management of gastric and esophageal cancer. The activity is designed for oncology specialists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, basic scientists as well as other members of our healthcare community. The event will be held at the Marriott Memphis East Hotel in Memphis, TN.
