TOP DOCTORS MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

BY MEMPHIS THE CITY MAGAZINE

Welcome to the Summer 2025 edition of the UT Health Science Center Surgery News.

With the transition to the new academic year, it is with pride that we celebrated the graduation of our most recent class of accomplished chief residents. As usual, our residents, students and fellows showcased their outstanding achievements at the annual Department of Surgery/Harwell Wilson Surgical Society Research Symposium. We were grateful to Dr. Kelly Hunt, Chair of the Department of Breast Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson and UTHSC Alumna for serving graciously as our Distinguished Visiting Professor.

As we look forward to the success of our graduates during the next steps of their careers, we simultaneously welcomed our new superb class of incoming PGY1 residents. Thanks to Ms. Brandi Lewis for arranging our annual new resident welcome event at Top Golf. It is with great pleasure that we announce the successful recruitment of Dr. Jason Frischer of the University of Cincinnati, a leading national expert in pediatric colorectal surgery, as the new UTHSC Division Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. We will provide a more detailed introduction in a future edition of the newsletter.

We are equally excited to welcome “home” Dr. Jessica Staszak (Residency Class of 2020) as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care. She most recently served in the Section of Acute and Critical Care Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Staszak is featured in this issue’s Faculty Spotlight.

As usual, I remain extremely grateful to our staff, residents, fellows and faculty for your daily efforts to continuously further the success of our department. We look forward to another fantastic year!

DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SURGERY CHIEF RESIDENTS FEATURE

MAKING THE ROUNDS

Meet our Surgical Chief Residents!

Over the course of the upcoming academic year, each newsletter will include brief questions and answers with our Chief Residents.

Linnea Cripe, MD, PGY5

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

College: Johns Hopkins University

Medical School: Temple University

Residency: UT Health Science Center

Fellowship: Surgical Oncology-Breast, University of California, Los Angeles, CA

QUESTIONS

Other than being a physician, what previous jobs have you held? I worked at California Pizza Kitchen while completing my post baccalaureate program prior to medical school. I worked in a lab overnight and was a teaching assistant in college for a civil engineering analysis course. I worked at a summer camp for six years.

What advice do you have for the incoming surgical interns? Be prepared to work hard but have fun with your co-residents and team. You may feel overwhelmed but when in doubt, treat your patients how you would want your family to be treated. Take pride in yourself and your work.

What is a fun or little-known fact or talent about yourself? I biked from Baltimore, MD to San Francisco, CA in 2014 and raised money for young adults affected by cancer to benefit the Ulman Cancer Fund. The journey was 70 days and anywhere from 50-120 miles per day. I loved Virginia, Colorado, and California the most.

Andrew Fleming, MD, PGY5

Hometown: Memphis, TN

College: The University of Tennessee (Knoxville)

Medical School: UT Health Science Center

Residency: UT Health Science Center

Fellowship: Surgical Oncology, Moffit Cancer Center, Tampa, FL

QUESTIONS

Other than being a physician, what previous jobs have you held? When I was 15, I worked as a jazz pianist four nights a week at a bar in downtown Memphis. (My dad, Dr. Martin Fleming had to drive me to work).

What attracted you to the UTHSC general surgery residency program? The Department of Surgery in Memphis has a strong emphasis on clinical volume, case complexity, and graduated autonomy. As a medical student, I saw the Memphis surgery paradigm firsthand and consider myself fortunate to have stayed on for my surgical training.

What advice do you have for the incoming surgical interns? The patients come first. Always.
