2018 LICHTERMAN EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR ROBERT MCKINNIE Congratulations to Robert (Willie Earl) McKinnie, Foreman, Facilities Transfer and Logistics Services on winning the 2018 Thomas C. Lichterman Employee of the Year! The Lichterman Outstanding Employee winner was announced at the annual award ceremony, held to recognize and honor our outstanding employees for their hard work, dedication, and commitment to our university.

Willie Earl continually shows dedication in fulfilling not only his everyday job responsibilities as logistics foreman, but provides exemplary service and customer service to the entire campus in this role. His team is one of the busiest on any given day here on campus moving materials, supplies, equipment, furniture and even sensitive equipment as needed. He prides himself on ensuring his team is dedicated to meeting their everyday goals. His team, as well as others on campus often speak to how well he performs in his role as foreman. Willie Earl is pictured below with Chancellor Steve Schwab and Executive Vice Chancellor Dr. Kennard Brown, along with Kenneth Bradshaw, Director of Facilities and Jeff Fields, Superintendent of Logistical Services.

FACILITIES ADMINISTRATION SPOTLIGHT

CAMPUS PROJECTS, EMPLOYEES AND EVENTS 6TH ANNUAL IT TECH FAIR

PHARMACY BUILDING

Facilities employees enjoyed the annual IT tech fair in November which showcased the latest and greatest technology along with information on resources and services available to employees through ITS. Facilities employees were among the winners of some pretty cool prizes given away during the tech fair: Scott Degroff ($100 gift certificate from wēpa), Mary Killion (JBL Speaker from Interactive Solutions, Inc.), Ephrem Guelay (JBL Speaker from Interactive Solutions, Inc.) and Ladonna Ford-McCormick (Google Home from Proofpoint).

Burnie Mitchell and Nathan Roy, facilities carpenters, work on installing ceiling tiles in Pharmacy B025. The room is being renovated for a microscope lab.

As the University of Tennessee Health Science Center moves towards more energy efficient buildings, one of the main ways to conserve energy is the efficient use of lighting. There are many ways to make lighting more efficient such as: • Switching to higher efficiency lighting such as LED’s • Using dimmable lights • Using daylighting controls to turn off lights when there’s enough natural lighting • Using occupancy sensors to control lighting when people are present • Using task lighting instead of overhead lighting • Using higher color temperature lighting to improve color rendition • Properly trained human resource

Renovations in Dunn N103 for the dental instrument repair room, are almost complete. The project included demolition of partition walls, new ceiling, paint, flooring and lighting.

Let’s talk about the last one, “Properly trained human resource” What does that exactly mean? In short, it means: simply turn off the lights. You would be amazed at how many housekeeping closets, storerooms, mechanical rooms, and other areas on campus, mostly unoccupied, have lighting that burns 24 hours a day, 365 days a week. Most of these rooms have a light switch that could be used to reduce this expense but most people just don’t turn off lights. Occupancy sensors are the answer to controlling lighting unoccupied spaces but they cost money. In fact, every other item listed above to make lighting more efficient cost the University money.

Using the light switch to turn off lighting when leaving a room, doesn’t cost anything. Until we are able to get occupancy sensors in all areas here on campus, let’s be part of the properly trained human resource and turn off lighting that is not being used, especially in areas that aren’t occupied.

MADISON PLAZA AND FOOD COURT

CELEBRATION TIME!

Renovations are in the final stages for the Madison Plaza lobby and food court project. After the many months of work put into this project, it’s coming together quite nicely. Almost every facilities department and several vendors have worked as a team on this project. The new improvements will compliment the space and have a brighter, cleaner, more inviting look. The re-opening has been long awaited and everyone is excited that it will be ready just in time for the Campus Holiday Party and food court re-opening. Be sure to come by and take a closer look during the event on Friday, December 7, 1 - 3 pm. Spread the joy and Donate a toy! Below are a few preview pictures of the amazing work completed so far.

KEY AND LOCK CONTROL MANAGEMENT Key and lock control management is under Facilities Administration. If you need to turn in, transfer, have new keys issued, or have locksmithing needs do the following: 1) Complete a request form found on the facilities website under the key control tab (https://www.uthsc.edu/ facilities/key-control.php).

2) Attach the form to an Archibus work order request (link found at the bottom of each page of Facilities website).

We are located in the Physical Plant Building (room 224). Office hours are 7:45 am – 4:45 pm, Monday through Friday. For further assistance, please call 901.448.4001.

TRAINING NEWS - ACTIVE SHOOTER Facilitators: Sergent William G. Gray

Thank you to Sergeant William G. Gray for taking time away from his busy schedule to facilitate Active Shooter training for the facilities organization on November 5, 6 and 7. Sgt. Gray did an great job of covering the steps to take in the event of an active shooter situation on the campus. The training included guidance on all things related to employee safety and security in the workplace.

Facilities is one of the largest departments at the university with over 200 employees and it’s beneficial when we all learn the do’s and dont’s to be prepared for a possible active shooter situation. We hope it never happens, but want to be prepared in the event that it does.

We appreciate the time and effort to accommodate the various shift times for the department in order to ensure everyone was trained.
