The Power Life Smoothies & Eats move to the Student Alumni Center (SAC) from the Madison Plaza Food Court is complete. The renovation for the new space is finished and they are scheduled to open in their new home on August 12. They will now be well-suited for the SAC location due to its proximity to Campus Recreation, housed in the same building. The project consisted of renovating an existing storage area into their new space which was done by Facilities carpenters, painters, plumbers, HVAC, electrical and custodial services. Great job team!

CAMPUS PROJECTS/DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT EMPLOYEE SERVICE RECOGNITION

PHARMACY BUILDING, 3RD FLOOR

Facilities’ employees were recognized recently during a ceremony held to honor them for their loyalty, commitment and years of service with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Congratulations and thank you to the following facilities employees for five years of dedication and service: Cornell Washington, Dalton Brown, Rosie Davis, Derek Hall, Rhonda Jones, Martha Macklin, Denise Minor, Ronald Ryan, Aubrey Alexander, Marvin Springfield, Everlina Taylor, Ebone Treadwell, Merdith Turner, David Wade, Tabitha White, Terri Whitelow, Rosalie Nelson and Eric Young.

A renovation project is nearing completion on the third floor at the College of Pharmacy. A new wall was built and a new door will be added to create two new office spaces and brand new furniture will be installed in the month of August.

Facilities HVAC, electricians, carpenters and painters as well as Safety and IT all worked on the project.

FACILITIES UT SIGN MAKEOVER Facilities Physical Plant The UT sign that sits directly in front of the facilities physical plant received a much needed make over. The sign is at least 30 years old and looks great after touch-ups and a fresh coat of paint done by facilities painter, Mark Clayton. If you’re on campus and looking to find the Facilities Physical Plant administration building, you need only look for the big orange “UT” in front of the building. Take a look at the before and after photos below.

FACILITIES EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Facilities Management

Facilities management very often receive emails from across the UTHSC campus commending employees and staff for doing a great job on a given day. Sometimes they are even sent directly to Dr. Kennard Brown, Executive Vice Chancellor, such as the one below from Eric Sollenberger, medical resident: “I’m a third year resident at Hamilton Eye and have had the pleasure of chatting with Britney Crump (Sr. Custodian) several times in the evenings during the course of her shift, particularly while in the wetlab on the third floor of HEI. She’s always been a pleasure to interact with and has consistently helped me dispose of overflowing waste that has built up in the wetlab. Recently, she took it upon herself to spearhead management of the entire wetlab, removing a five foot high pile of boxes. We are incredibly appreciative of her efforts - she took ownership of the situation and is making Hamilton Eye a better place to work. Additionally, her supervisor, whose name I didn’t get, (Edwin Jeffres, custodial superintendent) was very professional. Just passing along a positive experience made possible by these two individuals.” Job well done to our employees and staff!

ENERGY MANAGEMENT WITHIN FACILITIES MANAGEMENT Whit Sutton, Energy Manager

Energy management as a part of facilities management is generally inconspicuous at best, and completely absent in most facilities. Proper energy management can have a huge impact on facilities operations and its budget. By not pro actively pursuing energy management practices, managers not only miss an opportunity to directly save money through resource reduction, but also save money through indirect methods such as reduced cooling loads for our buildings, or less maintenance to cut labor cost.

To illustrate how important energy management is at a facility, in most cases a full 25 percent of a facility budget is allocated for energy cost. For instance, a facility that has a 25 million dollar budget, 6.25 million dollars should be devoted to energy. Because of all of the UTHSC scientific type buildings and other special high energy use facilities, our energy costs run more like 40 percent of our facility budget. That’s about 10 million dollars. A huge amount of money is spent just to keep the University of Tennessee Health Science Center operational on a day to day basis. Freeing up some of that money through conservation would eliminate some of the constant drag that utilities has on the facilities budget.

That’s where energy management comes into play. Using the right Energy Conservation Measures (ECM) a proper energy management program can save up to 20 percent of the utility costs. That savings to our budget, translates into 57 full-time employees, new roofs on all the buildings, over 100 new facility vehicles, or a totally new HVAC system in a major building EVERY YEAR! Continued investment with the right ECM’s for in-house UTHSC installations will begin again this fiscal year. With the addition of energy savings through our new performance contract with our partner Siemens, LED lighting retrofits for most buildings this year and continued monitoring and reassessment of our energy use and conservation choices, we will progress further to achieving our 20 percent energy reduction goal.

FACILITIES FAMILY NEWS

Katherine White, Technical Specialist III (Daughter of Brian White, Sr. Electrician III) Katherine White took interest in becoming a locksmith by working in the mechanical maintenance field with her dad, Brian White who is an electrician here on campus. From middle school until she went away to college she continued to shadow her dad. While away in college, she began working as an office aid, but after a year she was moved to help the school’s locksmith, since she already had experience in the field. She’d never done locksmith work before, but was familiar with construction and door handling, so it was easy to pick up. She worked in the Delta State University lock and key shop for three full years, until this summer 2019, when she came to UTHSC. She works alongside our campus locksmith, Geoffrey Fulghum and has been a great help in this role. Katherine will be returning soon to Delta State for her final semester and will graduate this December with her Bachelor of Science in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Her current plan is to return to work at UTHSC following graduation in January. Way to go Katherine!

KEY AND LOCK CONTROL MANAGEMENT

FACILITIES TRAINING - BIOMETRIC SCREENING AND MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

Key and lock control management is under Facilities Administration.

If you need to turn in, transfer, have new keys issued, or have locksmithing needs do the following:

Facilitators: Dr. Kimberly Collins, Student Health Services and Gina Curry, Human Resources

1) Complete a request form found on the facilities website under the key control tab (https://www.uthsc. edu/facilities/key-control.php).

2) Attach the form to an Archibus work order request (link found at the bottom of each page of Facilities website) and bring to Facilities.

A huge THANK YOU to Dr. Kimberly Collins and Gina Curry for training all of the Facilities employees in the month of July. They both did an outstanding job of covering the employee’s various shift times and we appreciate the time and effort to accommodate the organization.

Employee trainings were related to Biometric Screening and the many offered incentives through Partners for Health as well as Mental Health Awareness, which affect your physical, mental and spiritual well-being. The training was well received and employees were engaged during the entire training.
