930 MADISON BUILDING WATER PIPE FROZE/BURST

LINK BUILDING WATER LINE ERUPTED

The 930 Madison Building cooling tower water pipe froze and burst. The weather related incident resulted in the building being shut down and closed completely for hours while repairs took place.

A water line erupted in the Link Building water and poured out of the basement mechanical room into the tunnel and elevator. Facilities teams responded quickly to clean up and keep the water under control.

CAMPUS PROJECTS, EMPLOYEES AND EVENTS FACILITIES ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY Thank You To Employees

Facilities employees enjoyed a holiday party complete with good food, gift giveaways, music and more. This wonderful event was all courtesy of the facilities management team.

This was their way of thanking their employees for their work efforts during the year.

Scott Campbell, Safety Officer With winter in full swing, Memphis enjoys a varied climate.

Temperatures will range from the 60’s to an average low of 33 degrees. Even on the coldest nights, often the afternoons warm up to above freezing. When this happens, the average snowfall is low, but there is a higher potential for ice accumulation on the streets and sidewalks – and the associated injuries from slips and falls. These situations are caused from melting snow, rain, freezing fog, condensation that freezes during the temperature changes, and many other situations. Slips and falls on ice, or wet floors inside entry doorways are areas of high concern during these times. In areas of wet or ice accumulation follow these tips to avoid injury: 1) Walk slowly and wear slip resistant footwear. 2) Use caution when getting in and out of vehicles.

3) Watch for Slippery floors when entering buildings. 4)Try to keep hands and arms empty so you can stabilize yourself in slippery areas. If you notice areas that have ice in the walkways or wet floors in entrances, you must help everyone around you by notifying someone of the hazard. You can be the first line of defense. Do not think that someone else will report for you. If they don’t, it could be you or your co-worker that is affected by a slip and fall injury because of non-action.

Thermal comfort is a very complex subject that covers many very subjective criteria. The definitions of thermal comfort are varied and can be complex, but what thermal comfort really means to you is simply whether you feel too hot or cold.

Most people think that temperature is the factor that controls thermal comfort. It is true that temperature is a main ingredient in thermal comfort, but there are many other influences that impact how hot or cold you feel. These factors can be best broken down in to two categories, environmental factors and personal factors.

Environmental Factors: Air Temperature, Air Speed, Radiant Temperature, Humidity Personal Factors: Clothing, Metabolic Rate, Well Being These are the factors in your thermal comfort you can control.

There are some you can influence and there are others that you have no control over. There are also limitations on the extent of control you may have over these factors or how influencing one factor may be over another factor or person in a negative way.

In the next few months, this section will be covering some of these factors and how you can best control or influence these elements so you may be most comfortable in your work environment or in any environment outside of work.

Madison Building Food Court

The re-opening of the madison building food court will be wrapping up soon. Employees were able to get a first look during the annual Campus Holiday Party in December and will soon enjoy Coletta’s Italian, Power Life Smoothies and Juice Bar, Southern Hands, and SOI No. 9, Thai cuisine soon. Opening in the spring 2019 will be Chick-fil-A and Starbucks Coffee. It all looks amazing, great job!

KEY AND LOCK CONTROL MANAGEMENT Key and lock control management is under Facilities Administration. If you need to turn in, transfer, have new keys issued, or have locksmithing needs do the following:

TRAINING NEWS - UPCOMING TRAINING INFORMATION SECURITY AWARENESS Facilitator: Mary Madeksho

It’s that time of the year again!

Mary Madeksho, Admin Coordinator II, ITS Security will be taking time out to facilitate four training sessions for facilities employees to ensure everyone receives training. The trainings will take place January 14 - 16, 2019.

1) Complete a request form found on the facilities website under the key control tab (https://www.uthsc.edu/ facilities/key-control.php).

Trainings are to continually educate facilities employee on the importance of cyber security and awareness to ensure everyone is doing their part to protect themselves as well as the university. The training is an annual requirement for everyone in the UT System. New hires have to take the training before they can even connect to the network.

2) Attach the form to an Archibus work order request (link found at the bottom of each page of Facilities website).

Facilities has more than 200 employees and we appreciate the extra effort put forth to ensure our employees receive training on the importance of information security. We extend our thanks in advance for her time and effort to accommodate the entire organization .
