DEGREE PROGRAMS PharmD The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) is a professional doctorate degree, and is the prerequisite for the licensing needed to practice the profession of pharmacy. It is a full-time, four-year course of study. All students earning the PharmD will also earn certificates in Medication Therapy Management and Immunization Delivery.

PharmD/PhD The PharmD Program is combined with PhD programs based in the College of Pharmacy and the College of Graduate Health Sciences to train qualified pharmaceutical scientists for careers in research-focused positions.

Students accepted into the program may choose to pursue a PharmD degree, along with a PhD in either Health Outcomes and Policy Research or Pharmaceutical Sciences.

PharmD/MBA The UTHSC College of Pharmacy partners with the University of Memphis to offer a PharmD/MBA dual-degree program. Once the MBA program is completed, graduates are prepared for careers in management and leadership positions across the profession, from retail pharmacy ownership to institutional pharmacy management.

PharmD/MHIIM The PharmD program can be combined with the Masters in Health Informatics and Information Management (MHIIM) program based in the College of Health Professions. This degree prepares pharmacists to be leaders in an increasingly complex electronic health record environment.

PharmD/MPH The UTHSC College of Pharmacy partners with the University of Memphis to offer a PharmD/MPH dual degree program. While pharmacy education generally focuses on the health of one individual, the MPH program shifts the paradigm to population-based health, enabling the pharmacist to better understand their role in the context of public health and the health care system.

Certificate Programs Students may additionally earn a certificate in Health Informatics or Nuclear Pharmacy while completing their PharmD degree. Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM) prepares health professionals to manage complex electronic patient information. The nuclear pharmacy certificate program readies student pharmacists for careers as authorized nuclear pharmacists trained in the preparation and use of radioactive drugs and materials.

STUDENT LIFE With more than 80 student organizations on campus and 10 student organizations in the UTHSC College of Pharmacy, there are many ways to get involved. Our college and student organizations host numerous events throughout the year, including the annual UTHSC Boo Flu, Race for the Summitt 4-Miler, PARscription Golf Tournament, World AIDS Day, providing students numerous opportunities to affect the health of their community and develop leadership skills.

Rocky Top is not only home to the Vols, but to our third UTHSC College of Pharmacy campus at the UT Medical Center. Students can gain research and clinical experiences through opportunities at a Level I trauma center, a children’s hospital, and many other clinical and community practice sites. Plus, there’s UT football in the fall.

STUDENT PHARMACIST CURRICULUM Being a student pharmacist in the UTHSC College of Pharmacy means that you will have a unique and life-changing educational experience. As the only pharmacy program in Tennessee to have an integrative curriculum model, whereby pharmacology and medicinal chemistry are taught within disease-state management courses, students receive enhanced understanding of drug action and therapeutics. Your P1 year begins with foundational courses, therapeutics modules, and introduction to clinical simulation and patient counseling, providing students with the knowledge and skills development experiences necessary to produce better practitioners. From the start, you will receive

immunization training and have numerous opportunities to provide immunizations in the local community. The P2 year continues to build clinical knowledge and paves the pathway for entering advanced experiential training early in each student’s education. Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) begin during the P3 year, and continue through the fourth professional year. APPEs consist of month long rotations within clinical sites and under the supervision of a precepting pharmacist. Through these rotations, students become practice ready and develop a better understanding of the variety of clinical practice areas.
