Letter from Dean Likes “ We have embarked on an ambitious journey into the future, armed with a strategic plan for growth and a burning desire to lead the way in health care innovation.”

When I wrote those words for our Spring 2017 issue of Nursing magazine, I was thrilled to tell you about our exciting plans for the future. In our 2017 Annual Report, I am pleased to detail our specific progress on the journey.

I know you will be as proud of your College of Nursing as I am to know that in the last year we have:

• Initiated a new Registered Nurse First Assistant Program, the first in Tennessee and one of only a few in the country

• Started a new Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program, the only stand-alone Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program in Tennessee

• Implemented a new Nursing Center for Community Partnerships and Innovation, which already has launched the first nurse residency partnership with the Shelby County Health Department

• Welcomed Scott Howard, MD, MSc, our new associate dean for Research

• Recruited Christopher Lance Coleman, PhD, MS, MPH, FAAN, as the chair of the Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

• Held the inaugural NightinGala celebrating the accomplishments of nurses and the impact the profession has on the community

• Graduated 64 at Spring Commencement

• Achieved a 100 percent NCLEX pass rate for BSN graduates for the third year in a row

• Recorded a 100 percent pass rate on the National Certifying Exam for CRNA graduates

Message from Alumni Board President This year marks 10 years since I graduated from the BSN program in the College of Nursing at UT Health Science Center. As I reflect over the past decade, I can say my time spent at UTHSC prepared me well for all that I have faced since. Even now as an advanced practice nurse, I use information learned in my professional entry program at UTHSC. I have been fortunate to develop sound relationships with faculty, who have become mentors, providing guidance and helping me in many pivotal experiences. My time on the alumni board of directors has enabled me to network with top talent in the nursing field from across the nation, most of whom are fellow alumni of the College of Nursing.

I have seen many significant changes within the College of Nursing. As the face of the UTHSC campus evolves, so do the programs within the College of Nursing.

What has continued is a fervent commitment to provide programs tailored to the ever-changing demands of health care. The College of Nursing continues to produce graduates who outdistance others in their fields, many of whom were recipients of scholarships funded by generous friends and alumni. In addition to scholarships, money made available to the college provides opportunities to help prepare nurses for excellence, just as I feel I was prepared. Thank you for all you do to help equip the next generation of nurses for the future.

Celebrating Nursing, Past, Present and Future Nurses from across Memphis and Shelby County attended the inaugural NightinGala Celebration presented by the UTHSC College of Nursing May 5. The dinner and silent auction at the University Club of Memphis celebrated the accomplishments of nurses and the impact the profession has on the community.

Nursing organizations and academic institutions across the country have held similar events. This was a first for the UTHSC College of Nursing.

The guest speaker was Miss Colorado 2015 Kelley Johnson, who during the talent portion of the Miss America pageant performed an original monologue about her experiences as a nurse.

The college honored two local nurses for their efforts.

Carolyn Graff, PhD, RN, FAAIDD, professor and director of the Nursing Science PhD Program at UTHSC, received the Margaret A. Newman Award, honoring someone who has made outstanding contributions to the nursing profession through health as expanding consciousness. Alisa R. Haushalter, DNP, RN, director of the Shelby County Health Department, received the Dr. John Runyon Jr. Award, which celebrates someone who has promoted the efforts of nurses in the community.

The NightinGala was held in conjunction with the 2017 UTHSC College of Nursing Alumni Weekend and National Nurses Week, May 6-12. Gold Sponsors were the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation, Regional One Health, and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. Proceeds support the College of Nursing’s efforts to develop and educate the next generation of nurse leaders.

The 2018 NightinGala is set for May 4 in the Great Hall in Germantown, Tennessee.

Nursing student Robert Kirby is dedicated to helping others.

He is pictured on a mission trip he took last winter with Vida Missions to Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

Working to Increase Ranks of Males in Nursing Robert Kirby, a second-year student in UTHSC’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, comes from a family of nurses.

“The love and respect that I witnessed them have for their patients, played a huge part in my decision,” he said, describing why he chose nursing.

As the College of Nursing continues to grow, one of its core values is to promote diversity, attracting a diverse, qualified applicant pool that is reflected in the student population and its graduates. Similar to certain races, males are underrepresented in nursing. Increasing the male presence in nursing programs is a step toward the college’s goal of a diverse student population.

“National nursing trends show that patients are more receptive to health care providers of similar ethnic and cultural backgrounds,” said Wendy Likes, PhD, DNSc, APRN-Bc, FAANP, professor and dean of the UTHSC College of Nursing. “This may translate to men as well.

With the current nursing shortage and projections demonstrating this trend will worsen, we cannot begin to fill the nursing gap without ensuring a diverse nursing pool to include men.”

Kirby believes in breaking stereotypes. “Having diversity in nursing opens new doors toward caring for our patients, and I strongly believe any nurse today would agree that having both men and women on their units is beneficial,” he said. “My favorite aspect of it is getting the opportunity to be with my patients all day and hear their stories. As nurses, we get to be a crucial part of their care and give a voice to them. That is enough to motivate me to provide the best care possible.”

According to national data gathered by Christopher Coleman, PhD, MS, MPH, FAAN, professor and chair of the Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in the UTHSC College of Nursing, men comprise roughly nine percent of registered nurses, and only five percent of nursing faculty teaching from the baccalaureate to the PhD level.

For the UTHSC College of Nursing, however, success can be seen in the numbers. In addition to 14 percent of the college’s faculty being men, male nursing students currently represent up to 20 percent of their cohort in some programs and/or concentrations.

Kirby, who is president of the Student Nurses Association chapter at UTHSC and the social chair for the Nursing Student Government Association, said he had a simple reason for choosing UTHSC College of Nursing. “It felt right,” he said. “Additionally, the instructors were highly regarded as some of the best in the country. I can go into any of my instructor’s offices and connect with them. They want the best for their students, and it is evident in the way they instruct and care for each of us individually.”

After graduating in December, he plans to move to Columbia, South Carolina, to marry his fiancée, Emily, an aspiring physician assistant. He intends to return to school, and hopes to work in a pediatric intensive care unit as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), not only because he finds it rewarding, but also because a CRNA had a lasting impact on his life. “When I was younger, I needed two eye surgeries and the CRNA was that last little voice of hope before going under, and that has always stuck with me,” he said. “If I can be that voice for a frightened child, and relieve any stress for him or her, then that is what I want to do.”

Going forward, the college will continue its efforts to recruit and retain a diverse student body. “Campus support such as the Chancellor’s Diversity Scholarship, University Scholars Award, and the initiative to increase males of color on campus are also great resources,” said Jamie Overton, MAEd, director of Student Affairs in the College of Nursing. “It communicates a campus-wide commitment to increasing and supporting a diverse student population.”

A Lifelong Commitment to Nursing Continues Sylvia Anderson Price, BSN, MPH, PhD, coauthored the first book on pathophysiology for allied health professionals.

She was teaching a class on the subject, and because there was no textbook on it for allied health professionals, she decided to write one. She invited her colleague, Lorraine Wilson, to work on it with her. Their book, “Pathophysiology: Clinical Concepts of Disease Processes,” has been used to prepare countless nursing students since it was published in 1978.

To say it is Dr. Price’s only claim to fame would be shortsighted. Certainly, the book has been a great success in the health care arena. However, Dr. Price, a retired professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, is also well-known as a teacher, innovator, mentor, leader, and author of many scholarly works on nursing administration and economics.

She recently received the title of professor emeritus in the UTHSC College of Nursing. The title honors her contributions to the college and its students, and reflects her continued commitment to the university she served for a decade.

Michael Carter, DNSc, DNP, University Distinguished Professor in the College of Nursing, said Dr. Price mentored many outstanding nurses in the community in the Nursing Administration major she started and ran for 10 years. She encouraged her students not only to be outstanding health care administrators, but also to be exceptional writers, publishing in health care journals and contributing to the body of knowledge about their profession. She can count among her students numerous leaders in academic and clinical administration throughout the Mid-South and across the country.

Dr. Carter met Dr. Price when he agreed to serve as one of her contributing authors. At the time, she was an assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing in Ann Arbor. A visit to the UTHSC College of Nursing

by Dr. Price and her husband, Joe, along with some encouragement from UTHSC’s Nursing administration, led her to join the faculty.

Dr. Price traveled to Memphis about twice a month, advised students, met with other faculty, and taught her classes.

This was before online education, but Dr. Price was able to use her monthly presence, fax machines, and the phone to stay connected with her students and allow them to earn the administration MSN with minimum disruption in their work and family time. Many of the nurse administrators at UTHSC’s clinical partner institutions were able to earn their degrees and begin their publishing endeavors under Dr. Price’s mentorship.

Alice Davidson, RN, MS, JD, who was chief nurse at the Memphis Veterans Affairs Medical Center, taught with Dr. Price. Her insight into nursing practice issues was invaluable to the class discussions.

“My decision to teach in the graduate program in nursing administration at UT Health Science Center was one of the best I ever made,” Dr. Price said.

Former student Marylane Wade Koch, MSN, RN, said Dr. Price started as a teacher and mentor, and has become a lifelong friend. “She expects the best and gives her best, always looking for ways to bring you along to a place to use your talents,” she said. “This kind, spiritual woman enjoys fishing, writing, and being with friends and family more than anything money can buy.”

Dr. Price now lives in Florida, where she continues her love for writing, and volunteers her time with Junior Achievement. She maintains close relationships with many of her former UTHSC students.

She has also been active in nursing philanthropy, and recently established a scholarship in the UTHSC College of Nursing. It will allow her to continue to help nursing students achieve their dreams. The Dr. Sylvia Anderson Price Endowed Scholarship will support students with financial needs.

“I am honored to have met Dr. Price and be able to share with her the well-deserved title of professor emeritus,” said Wendy Likes, dean of the UTHSC College of Nursing.

“Dr. Price has reached so many students,” she said. “I have heard from several of them, and they speak of her dedicated mentorship and development, particularly of nurse scholars.

Her great work will continue on in those honored with her recently endowed scholarship.”

CON’s Sara Wilkinson Receives Top Student Honors at National Conference Sara Wilkinson, a third-year student in the UTHSC College of Nursing’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Nurse Anesthesia Program, is the only student in the country to receive the 2017 Student of Excellence Award from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).

The professional organization has a membership of 49,000, including certified registered nurse anesthetists and student members. It represents approximately 90 percent of nurse anesthetists in the United States, and focuses on legislative concerns, continuing education, and general support for the profession of nurse anesthesia.

Wilkinson received the top student award at the organization’s recent annual conference in Seattle, Washington. The award acknowledges academic excellence, excellence in leadership, and excellence in service to others. At UTHSC, she has served as president of the Student Government Association Executive Council.

“I was thrilled to receive this award, which acknowledged all my hard work during my time as a student nurse anesthetist,” Wilkinson said. “I was excited to be able to represent UTHSC, and the nurse anesthesia program.”

Wilkinson received other honors at the meeting. Her poster, “Bispectral Index Monitoring and Post-Operative Delirium,” was chosen for display at the conference. This is the first time a poster from UTHSC has received this honor. Dwayne Accardo, DNP, CRNA, assistant professor and program director for the DNP Nurse Anesthesia Program at UTHSC, was a collaborator on the poster.

Wilkinson also received the Dean and Fred Hayden Memorial National Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes scholastic excellence.

“These awards have been wonderful to receive to recognize all my efforts and hard work, but the most important goal of my career as a certified nurse anesthetist is to be of service to my patients,” she said.

As Deputy Surgeon General, Rear Admiral (RADM) Sylvia Trent-Adams advises and supports the Surgeon General regarding operations of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps and in communicating the best available scientific information to advance the health of the nation. She served as the Chief Nurse Officer of the USPHS from November 2013 through May 2016.

RADM Trent-Adams has held various positions in HHS, working to improve access to care for poor and underserved communities. As a clinician and administrator, she has had a direct impact on building systems of care to improve public health for marginalized populations domestically and internationally.

Prior to joining the USPHS, RADM Trent-Adams was a nurse officer in the U.S. Army.

RADM Trent-Adams received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Hampton University, a Master of Science in Nursing and Health Policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She became a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2014.
