The Eye Health & Chronic Disease Specialist Support Program (EH&CDSSP) aims to visit Coober Pedy two to three times a year and provide eyes and vision specialist services to the Umoona community, through conducting full-day eye clinics based at either the Umoona Tjutagku Health Service clinic, or the Drug and Alcohol Day Centre on the main street.
During the EH&CDSSP visits, the client experience consists of a consultation firstly with the visiting optometrist for a complete vision check, preliminary eye examination and advice and suggestions for the provision of corrective eyewear if needed, which may result in immediate issuing of magnifier glasses or arranging for prescription glasses to be ordered and dispatched. The client then has a consultation with the visiting ophthalmologist (eye doctor) whereby they have a thorough internal examination of the anatomy of the eyes, followed by professional advice regarding treatment if required, which may include:
periodic follow-up appointments
referrals for surgery/further treatment in either Adelaide or Alice Springs
or on-the-spot lasering right there in the Umoona clinic for conditions such as diabetic retinopathy or post-cataract surgery healing.
The most recent EH&CDSSP visit introduced a new visiting ophthalmologist to the program Dr Paul Athanasiov, and we will also be looking at a new visiting optometrist to work alongside Paul for the longer term as of the New Year. On this most recent visit we were grateful to have the excellent services of Ms Stephanie Mitris at extremely short notice. With the hard work of several dedicated UTHS staff (which included working on a Sunday afternoon!) , together with Stephanie, Paul, and EH&CDSSP Coordinator Chris Rektsinis, the program was able to service a total of 37 clients over a day and a half, most of whom were referred clients in urgent need of eye specialist care for quite some time.
Well done to all, and the EH&CDSSP looks forward to continuing in 2015!

The Music Group has exploded with 4-5 guitarists belting out Led Zeppelin and Covers. Now a steady group of 20 people have come to watch and it’s been great to share with them drug and alcohol messages and strategies to handle these drugs safely.
