After various service provider meetings which included attendance by Coober Pedy Area School, AFSS, SAPOL, Red Cross, Housing SA, SA Ambulance, Health SA, Coober Pedy District Council and Umoona Community it was decided that Men’s Health would include a Men’s camp, a Family Fun Day and the showing of the film ’Last Taxi to Darwin’ at the Drive Inn.
On 20th and 21st May 2016 the Men’s camp was held at Mabel Creek station where 20 men gathered overnight to discuss men’s Health issues, relationships and appropriate behaviours, Drug and alcohol issues and men’s issues. It was especially good to have senior surgeant Allan Dawson in attendance as he discussed with Jack and Todd from Kornar Winmil Yunti the role of police and appropriate behaviour. For over 2 hours the men discussed health issues and appropriate strategies for life.
It was an extremely enjoyable time and cooking and discussions were very beneficial. Getting out of town, enjoying malu, sharing, chatting and camping out were great. At night the men watched some movies focussed on Aboriginal history and some Comedy shows, Thanks to UCWCSA for it funding of such a venture with the idea of an annual camp. Taboo or not Taboo, sexual health and blood-borne virus (BBV) workshop was held by AHCSA in partnership with ASHM and SAHMRI at SAHMRI office in north terrace Adelaide on 20th and 21st of April 2016. Approximately 30 participants attended the workshop including AHCSA team, students, representative from South Australian Aboriginal organisations and stakeholders. It was a 2 days workshop on sexual transmitted infection and BBV. The event included presentation on STI screening test & analysis, management and treatment of Hep B, C & HIV and clean needle program facilitated by Dr David Johnson, Public Health medical Officer, AHCSA Assoc Prof. James Ward, Jeff Stewart, CNC, Adelaide, Rob Gerrie, DASSA and Michael Larkin, AHCSA. Group discussion, evaluation, and tricky conversation: asking hard questions to get positive results and group activities made the program more meaningful.
Honourable guest speaker Assoc. Prof. James Ward delivered a knowledgeable speech SAHMRI. He spoke about the institute’s Nobel work, acknowledging its health service including educational privileges starting from primary level to PhD/research work for the aboriginal people of SA. Additionally he also mentioned the contribution towards the aboriginal people around other parts of Australia in health sector. Furthermore he has declared about the upcoming vast vacancies in the health care sector for SA aboriginal health workers. In the seminar, Mr Neville Fazulla, a victim of HIV, has spoken about the endeavouring journey that he has experienced from the beginning of his illness. His delightful presence has inspired us not just to deal with the disease, but also overcome it fiercely with a positive attitude. During the workshop, there were few other organisations such as Clinic 276, Yarrow Place, SA SIN and SHINE SA that has been informed us about their social activities, the way they work and operate. Below is their contact address for service inquiry: •

SA SIN: www.sin.org.au

Yarrow Place: www.yarrowplace.sa.gov.au

In a nut shell, the seminar has provided the participants with descriptive knowledge on sexual health and blood-borne virus (BBV). I intend to convert this knowledge into skill and serve the aboriginal community of Coober Pedy and around it for a healthier future.

National Sorry Day is an Australia-wide observance held on May 26 each year. This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. Stolen generations refer to Indigenous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communities
