Always looking for new advances in health WHATS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD OF DIABETES AT UMOONA HEALTH? HEALTHY FOR LIFE - ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO MAKE OUR CLIENTS LIVES LESS PAINFUL Recently a client who has been coming to Umoona Tjutagku Health for a very long time agreed to trial a new device which would make taking regular twice daily readings for her sugar less painful.

This blood sugar reading system is provided from the global company Abbots at the cost of $95.00 very 2 weeks

Unfortunately at this stage it is very expensive to provide for free to our clients so Trish is looking at what can be done. Dr Helen has contacted Abbots the company that distributes the blood sugar system to see if Umoona

Our client Raylene Dodd wore the disc on the back of her upper arm for 2

weeks. Raylene was able go about her daily activities and any time Raylene wanted to know what her glucose/sugar level was, she held a reader close to

the disc on her arm and it provided a reading of her sugar levels. This meant that for 2 weeks Raylene did not have to use a needle device on her finger to get a reading of her blood sugar. Hurrah no pain for 2 weeks.

The glucose reading in this system is taken from the interstitial fluid so there is a 10 minute difference between the blood reading and the interstitial reading. The benefits were obvious. When Raylene felt unwell it was quick and easy to read her levels. When Raylene wondered what effects different foods had on her sugar levels it was easy to find out.

Indigenous desexing program – Coober Pedy 20-09-2016 (Supported financially by SA Health) Roger the Vet from Pt Augusta held a clinic especially for Indigenous clients in September 2016.

Dawn and Monica picked up the animals with their owners, and brought them to the clinic for desexing, health checks and vaccinations.

Totals for the day were Male dog desexing 10 Female dog desexing 10 Male cat desexing 4 Female cat desexing 4 Vaccination 43 Worm 34 Microchip 17 Other procedures included lump removals, nexgard medication for mange, and nail clips.

This has been a very successful program; well supported and organised. The success can be measured by the number of Indigenous people who actively sought them out to get their animals desexed. One person bought 7 dogs in for desexing, another brought 5 dogs in. These numbers demonstrate a shift in animal care thinking and are the result of a long standing animal health program in this area.

The day went very well. Roger was able to start on the dogs early and this meant he wasn’t working into the night to get all the animals finished. Most clients accompanied their animals, some were involved in the drop off and pick up, others only one way. Many of the people and names we had seen before.

A brief over view of suicidally rhetoric Much of the rhetoric associated with suicide derives from writers such as Durkheim who posited that suicide might be the consequence of external pressures, as opposed to simply being psychopathological (Reeves 2010). For Durkheim the distinctive characteristic of suicide, is not that the act is performed intentionally, but rather that it is performed advisedly. This means that the agent knows that death will be the result of his act, regardless of whether or not death is his goal.

The suicide prevention role Role of Suicide Prevention Worker interplays with the aims and objections of the south Australian Suicide Prevention Plan which was rolled out in 2015. This new strategy was a systematic approach which adopted the theme that Living Is For Everyone (LIFE). The Framework provides support for a national action plan to prevent suicide and to promote mental health and resilience Australia wide. It provides a practical suite of resources and research findings on how to address this comples issue (NSPS 2015). Aims and objections of the role also interplay with the 2017 - 2021 Draft of the South Australian Suicide Prevention Plan which has a focus on Making people the priority, empowering the community, and translating evidence into practice Suicide prevention work entails raising awareness through education, individual crisis management, as well as ongoing support for those who have attempted to commit suicide or are contemplating suicide.

Education is a core component in suicide prevention work, and spearheads the strategic plan to address suicide and also raising awareness within community as a whole with the aim of preventing suicide amongst diverse groups and empowering communities to act against suicide. Ways in which education is carried out varies.

Typically suicide prevention entails working in collaboration with other agencies such as schools, suicide prevention networks hospitals and other mental health service providers. Suicide Prevention Networks are very important and the establishment of Suicide Prevention Networks linked to local government regions have provided a way of empowering the local community to act against suicide (Draft South Australian Suicide Prevention Plan 2017 – 2021)

The importance of culturally appropriate interventions.

Given that this role is set in a rural setting space, the importance of culturally appropriate interventions cannot be overlooked. The efficacy of these interventions carried out have been empirically tested and are known to address this issue which plagues society today.

Camping Trips Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples view health in a holistic context that encompasses mental health, physical, cultural and spiritual health. Land is central to wellbeing and when the harmony of these interrelations is disrupted, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ill health persists and an integral part of their social and emotional wellbeing (National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention Strategy).

Take the time to relax, recharge and revitalise your spirit with a Women’s Pampering evening on us. The Ladies were spoiled with an evening of pampering, divine rest and relaxation return feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The Women’s pamper night was held at Umoona Tjutagku Health centre and was the first event for the local Aboriginal community.

There was a lot of laughter practicing Yoga demonstrated by Trish Turner.

The program was organised by The Healthy For Life Team encouraging women to take time out from their busy schedules.

So All you Ladies we will be doing one every month so please come and enjoy some MEEEEE time.

Therefore camping trips are an important intervention, as they encourage clients to maintain and nurture their connection to the land. For those high risk groups (those who have committed suicide or those who are contemplating it) to connect to the land plays a central part in the healing process.

School program

Education is a key component to suicide prevention, for this role I have developed a school program which helps raise awareness about some of the issues which contribute to suicide or suicidal thoughts amongst teens. This program embraces anti sematic youth on practical ways on maintaining good mental health, and embraces anti suicidal. This program is part of early intervention which aims at providing valuable tools to the youth so that they are better equipped to identify suicidal thoughts, and also increases help seeking behaviour. Nurturing help seeking behaviour is done by helping individual identify organisations that may assist in a time of crisis.

Post suicide attempt counselling.

As previously mentioned working in collaboration with health clinics and hospitals is vital, and plays an integral part in providing a holistic and relevant support. Emergency call outs occur regularly in this role. By adopting interventions which are favoured in this framework cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectic behaviour therapy and mindfulness (CBT, DBT) both during and post care, the best possible care for the client is assured. In line with evidence based postvention, ongoing care, safety planning and risk assessment are necessary and place the client centre, as well as offer valuable support for families assisting a loved one who attempts suicide.

Conclusion The importance of providing services which offer gap free support, crisis care and case management, as well as community actives all aimed at healing individuals as well as communities, cannot be overlooked. Therefore I count it a privilege to play a part in preventing suicide and hope to make a real difference as a Suicide Prevention Worker in Coober Pedy by being part of an organisation that offers high quality care and ongoing support By Sophie Henschke

National Sorry Day is an annual event that has been held in Australia on 26 May, since 1998, to remember and commemorate the mistreatment of the country's Indigenous population. During the 20th century, Australian governments' policies resulted in a "Stolen Generation" – described by John Torpey as "Aboriginal children separated, often forcibly, from their families in the interest of turning them into white Australians".

Tackling Indigenous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, tobacco smoking is the most preventable cause of ill health and early death, and responsible for around one in five deaths. Australian Government has delivered a targeted program to reduce Indigenous smoking rates (Tackling Indigenous Smoking) with regional grants since 2010. It has also supported the important complementary role of primary health care services in the delivery of brief interventions, and developed nationwide media campaigns targeting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as part of the National Tobacco Campaign, including Break the Chain television, radio, digital and print advertising, the More Targeted Approach, Quit for You, Quit for Two targeting pregnant women and Don’t Make Smokes Your Story.
