That unfinished wall. The image of a completed border fence, which has sparked emotions of hate and guilt along with feelings of love and veneration, has divided communities in both of the sister cities. And yet, we have only focused on the anthropomorphic perspective.

To To find out how the wall is affecting the environment and migrating species at the border, Jacqueline talked to environmental activists, zoo curators, and immigration and political experts to report on this essential, yet surpassed, world of border nature.

As reporter Jacqueline Aguirre wrote, border operations to stop illegal immigration have focused on preventing human crossing and smuggling. In doing these, no one stopped to think how physical barriers damage the coexistence of plants and animals along southern border cities.

We also have a story on vaping.

Reporter Brandy Ruiz wrote on the latest smoking studies revealing insightful approaches to vaping as a substitute for smoking habits and how that affects the life of both nonsmokers and heavy smokers.

Brandy also did a story on research studies at UTEP and how the recently awarded R1 distinction, given by Carnegie Classification of Higher Education to universities with the highest research opportunities, is changing The University of Texas at El Paso and the

This issue also covers the innovation that social media brought to traditional business entrepreneurship. Reporter Ingrid Giese interviewed local entrepreneurs on how the traditional models of their businesses changed with the rise of social media.

Lastly, my story focuses on art expressions on both sides of the border under the lens of two border artists: Cimi and Yorch. Both with an impressive street art portfolio, they talked me through their challenges, accomplishments and messages of hope to border life.

Smoking one pack of cigarettes equates to twenty cigarettes a day.

Now, multiply that by three and that’s the average amount that a heavy smoker might go through in a day. You’ll discover that more than 720 milligrams of nicotine have entered the blood stream.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 16 million Americans live with a disease caused by smoking, and each day, more than 300 people younger than the age of 18 years become daily cigarette smokers.

“I started smoking cigarettes at the age of 15. It escalated pretty quickly, at 16, 17, I started smoking like two packs a day,” says Dominique Amador, a worker at The Vapory, a local vape shop.

Amador was in sports throughout high school and participated in mixed martial arts outside of school.

After he began smoking, he started to notice that his participation in these activities began to cut in half.

“It got to where I would be laying down at night and I could feel a pressure on my chest, that

pressure would start building up and I would just have these horrible coughs,” Amador says.

“So, I got into vaping.

Actually, I quit and went cold turkey for about a year, but then I started getting these habits. I would start going to corner stores and try to look for something to maybe eat or drink, realizing that I just went there to buy a pack of cigarettes. So, that’s how I picked it up. It turned everything around. It changed my life a little bit,” Amador says.

His habit, he says, could be related to his father.

“I skipped out on my dad and we were apart for seven years. But, I remember he smoked cigarettes.

So, it could’ve been a genetic thing because I remember smelling cigarettes. Just the smoke in the air reminded me of my father. So, it made me start kind of picking it up from there,” Amador says. “I go through about a 20 mL to a 30 mL a day at a 3 percent nicotine. It all depends on exactly what the mood is that day. If it’s a stressful day, I’ll do it more so than others. I’m not

so much a chain vaper although, I do vape quite frequently.”

Nicotine levels in vapes vary from 36 mg/mL to 42 mg/mL depending on the manufacturer.

According to veppocig.com, an online vape shop that specializes in a “premium experience” using vape juices and accessories, selecting the correct nicotine level is important and should depend on how much nicotine a person’s body got accustomed to before when smoking a traditional cigarette.

There are currently three different forms of e-cigarettes: tanks and mods, rechargeable e-cigarettes, and disposable cigarettes. Some of these versions are made to look like regular cigarettes, USB sticks, pens, and other items you might find on a day-to-day basis. These devices offer a wide variety of flavorings, skins and

colors as well as chemicals that are used in the juices.

Scientists are still learning about the long-term effects of e-cigarettes. According to the CDC, here are some facts that scientists are fully sure of: 1. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which has known health effects.

2. Besides nicotine, e-cigarette aerosol can contain substances that harm the body.

3. E-cigarettes can cause unintended injuries.

Additionally, e-cigarettes are not currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a quit smoking aid, according to the CDC. In fact, U.S. Preventive Task Force, a group of health experts that make recommendations about preventive health care, concluded that the evidence that has already been collected is insufficient to recommend the electronic alternative for smoking cessation in adults. However, the CDC does state that e-cigarettes may help adult smokers if used as a complete substitute for all cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products.

“It’s just a substitute for cigarettes.

I believe that if you don’t smoke cigarettes, you should not start vaping just to pick up the habit,” Amador says.

Researchers at The University of Texas at El Paso’s School of Pharmacy (SOP) are warning that e-cigarettes might actually lead to serious heart conditions.

“It really is not safe,” says Fadi Khasawneh, Chair of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UTEP. Khasawaneh and Fatima Z. Alshbool, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at UTEP, are researching the different effects of e-cigarettes.

“I’m trying to answer the question: are e-cigarettes safe for cardiovascular systems?” Alshbool says.

In Alshbool’s study, he observed platelets in mice exposed to e-cigarette vapors over five days became hyperactive, causing blood clots to form. Platelets are blood cells that help the body form clots to stop bleeding. Hyperactive platelets ultimately form blood clots and in turn, this causes heart attacks and strokes.

“What was alarming is that even that short-term exposure, which is really just basically someone vaping for a week, increased the rate of heart attacks,” Khasawaneh says.

While the study raised concerns about e-cigarette use in humans, Alshbool and Khasawaneh stressed that there still needs to be more research done on the effects of vaping on youth.

“I do have family members who have cardiovascular diseases that are all due to cigarettes. So, it deepened my interests in tobacco in general,” Alshbool says. “But,

being here in the United States and hearing about all these trends regarding e-cigarettes and you can see, the teenagers are now vaping, it touched my heart to see these kids and imagine my kids vaping.”

According to Alshbool, the appearance of e-cigarettes has become attractive to youth as some devices look like a USB. “The FDA announced that there is a survey that shows that e-cigarette usage among high school students increased by 38 percent from last year to this year.”

The 2018 National Youth Tobacco FDA Survey showed alarming increases in current use of any tobacco product. This is primarily because of an increase in e-cigarette use. The data in the survey shows that 1.5 million more students used e-cigarettes in 2018 than in 2017. Furthermore, the data shows that more than 3.6 million youth used e-cigarettes, making them the most commonly used tobacco product in 2018.

“They started getting rid of them because they look too kid-friendly,” Amador says about Juul pods being taken off the market.

In March 2019, the FDA issued a policy restricting how and where flavored e-cigarettes are sold.

According to an article by the Washington Post, the initiative would limit sales of fruity and kidfriendly vaping products to stores that bar minors.

“I personally think that if kids are going to want to get something, they are going to get it regardless of what their parents or old people are going to think,” Amador says.

“But I don’t think it’s cool. I think they should get out of that trend.”

Buying vapes, Juuls, mods or any sort of e-cigarette seems to get harder and harder every day. The $15 billion-dollar startup

for e-cigarettes called Juul, including other large e-cigarette manufactures, were caught under investigation by the FDA in September 2018 when Commissioner Scott Gotlieb released a statement about his concern over the “epidemic of nicotine used among teenagers.”

This investigation has led to the companies ceasing their sales in stores, gas stations and other major markets for their product.

Alshbool and Khasawneh both agreed and encouraged e-cigarettes being used as an alternative to help transition smokers away from traditional cigarettes and completely discouraged non-smokers from

using e-cigarettes. They also noted that if one had to choose between starting the habit with a traditional cigarette versus an e-cigarette, the latter is better when considering that users can choose the nicotine levels they decide to intake.

“Even if it doesn’t have nicotine, you’re still looking at the habit.

When I vape, I don’t even vape in front of my little brothers and sisters or any kids for that matter because I don’t want any kids picking up the habit,” Amador says. “Vaping for me is strictly substitution for cigarettes. I don’t recommend anyone who is under 18 to start doing it especially because nicotine is a drug.”

SPLASH FRONTERIZO Un Vistazo a Murales y Esculturas de la Frontera By: Grecia Sánchez

terreno como Los Dos, Christin Apodaca, Mitsu Overstreet, Myker Trrobali, MAC, VooDoo, Deadpunk, entre otros. Por el lado mexicano, el trabajo ha sido liderado por el Klvr (Kalavera) studio, grupo independiente Performance, Arturo Damasco, David Flores, Shack Chavez, Paloma Martinez, Melissa Lara, entre otros.

Muchos de estos temas son parte de conversaciones diarias en ambos países, pero, lo inusual es la discusión a través de pintura, mural y escultura.

Sin duda, una de estas caras toma forma con Jesús Alvarado, mejor conocido como Cimi, quien cuenta con un repertorio de 10 murales en El Paso con contribuciones colaborativas en Cd. Juárez.

El mundo artístico de la frontera El Paso-Ciudad Juárez ha sido influenciado y dirigido por varias caras en ambos países.

En el lado estadounidense, se ha descrito como “Renacimiento” al arte urbano de El Paso por trabajos recientes que resaltan la cultura Chicana en el parque Lincoln, en el centro de la ciudad, entre otras áreas, con artistas liderando el

Sigo aprendiendo y ahorita se trata de trabajar con diferentes artistas, diferentes miembros de la comunidad que agregan valor al trabajo”, Cimi dice. “He aprendido diferentes cosas así que cada vez que se habla de un nuevo mural siempre va a haber una nueva experiencia. Siempre es divertido”.

Con una carrera de más de 15 años, Cimi atribuye el origen de su apodo a sus inicios artísticos en la preparatoria Bowie de El Paso.

“Muchos de mis amigos, cuando crecían iban cambiando sus nombres a su análogo en

azteca, pero mi nombre es de origen cristiano y es más un nombre católico así que no era exactamente traducible al azteca”, Cimi dice. “El más cercano que pude hallar fue ‘Cimi’ que es de origen maya y significa su interpretación de la vida porque lo comparan con el maíz”.

Cimi dice que los mayas utilizaron el maíz para interpretar la vida como un ciclo, ya que el maíz tiene que plantarse y crecer para que se puedan hacer tortillas y otras comidas. Eventualmente, la planta tiene que morir, dejando que la semilla vuelva a caer, y así, prepararse para crecer en otra vida.

“No estoy diciendo que soy dios o lo que sea, pero fue el origen más cercano que encontré a mi nombre, y también porque empecé con el grafiti así que necesitaba un nombre corto, cuatro letras”, Cimi dice.

Fue así como Jesús Alvarado se transformó en Cimi, nombre en el que se le conocería en el mundo artístico de la frontera. Creciendo bajo la influencia de Gazpar Enríquez, quien es reconocido como uno de los artistas más prominentes de la frontera, Cimi inició sus estudios artísticos sintiendo una curiosidad enorme por el aerógrafo.

La frontera sur de Estados Unidos con México ha surgido como tema en varias conversaciones: la decisión de continuar con un muro, la creciente violencia en una ciudad y la seguridad intacta de otra, una caravana esperando cruzar, familias separadas, peleas dentro de carteles de drogas, entre otros.

vez que estaba aprendiendo me di cuenta de todo el trabajo que es, porque tienes que separarlo, limpiarlo y ponerlo de nuevo junto”, Cimi dice. “Es algo que no solamente vas a aprender cómo hacerlo y luego dejarlo de lado”.

Al otro lado del río Bravo, Jorge Alejandro Pérez Mendoza, quien nació en Cd. Juárez, ha desarrollado el arte urbano de esta región y es hoy en día uno de los artistas de mayor influencia en el norte de México.

Jorge es mejor conocido como Yorch, ya que es el resultado final de una modificación en los caracteres del apodo que él tenía cuando estudiaba diseño gráfico en la Universidad Autónoma de Cd. Juárez (UACJ), hace alrededor de 20 años.

Yorch cuenta con un repertorio de dos esculturas en Cd. Juárez, más de 5 murales y más de 20 trabajos en serigrafía. Ha representado a Cd. Juárez en el sur de México en convocatorias de arte a nivel nacional.

También, ha hecho obras para el tribunal de menores y centros comunitarios junto al colectivo Rezizte, proyecto de arte juarense al que Yorch atribuye su mayor influencia y desarrollo artístico fronterizo.

Aparte de Rezizte, Yorch dice haber recibido influencia por parte de los históricos muralistas mexicanos.

“Diego Rivera, de por sí, es el que tenemos que ver si nos queremos dedicar a algo monumental, pero de los mexicanos, el que más me gusta es David Alfaros Siqueiros”, Yorch dice. “Siento que se manifiesta una influencia de su obra sobre todo por la construcción que es algo que yo estoy ahorita incursionando de lleno”.

REZIZTE: JUÁREZ SE MANTIENE VIVA CON ARTE Yorch cuenta el nacimiento de Rezizte desde que él y sus amigos interesados en el arte estaban juntos estudiando en la UACJ. Después de varias reuniones en el taller de Yorch, nace la idea de crear un colectivo.

“Todavía no sabíamos nombre ni nada, entonces en mi taller, yo ya

empezaba a imprimir serigrafía, parte de lo que hacemos en el colectivo. Como primer proyecto, ahí nos juntamos y era ya llevar algo que quisiéramos hacer”, Yorch dice. “Teníamos muchas ganas de hacer cosas y todos llegamos con imágenes. Todos los temas eran recurrentes hacia la situación de violencia de la mujer, que era no exactamente de ese tiempo a principios de 2000, pero teníamos entre 12 y 15 años y crecimos en ese rollo de los ‘90s y los asesinatos”.

Los fundadores de Rezizte buscaban darle a Cd. Juárez algo más de qué hablar a parte de violencia, que según Yorch era lo más notable del tiempo.

“La palabra Rezizte era decirle a la ciudad ‘resiste’ y el personaje era Tin Tan o Don Ramón que era la idea de los personajes de la ciudad”, Yorch dice. “(También) decidimos ponernos máscaras 656 (porque) íbamos a usar la idea de un luchador como que éramos luchadores sociales”.

Se hicieron carteles y calcamonías manifestando una lucha social para mejorar la situación que,Yorch dice, les tocó vivir.

Después de un mes de juntas y trabajos, se montó una exhibición de arte con el tema de violencia contra la mujer en la UACJ.

“La universidad empezó a reconocer que ya estábamos juntos haciendo algo”, Yorch dice. “Entonces, después de esa exhibición, continuamos con ese mismo camino de hacer esa obra en la calle y de pronto también tener alguna exhibición de trabajo”.

Así es como inicia el proyecto de Rezizte y para Yorch fue una colaboración crucial en su desarrollo como artista fronterizo.

“Rezizte ha sido muy importante porque estuvimos en muchas ciudades de la República haciendo murales, de invitación a hacer una obra y murales comunitarios”.

SEGUNDO BARRIO COMO HERRAMIENTA PARA ESPARCIR RECUERDOS El Segundo Barrio es conocido históricamente como uno de los vecindarios con más presencia hispana y latina en El Paso.

Comenzó a formarse cuando agricultores y trabajadores rurales de México cruzaron la frontera durante los 1800s y fue refugio para varios inmigrantes mexicanos que huían de la violencia e inestabilidad socioeconómica de la Revolución Mexicana a principios de 1900s.

Tras pasar por incendios, sobrepoblación, falta de infraestructura y servicios públicos, restauraciones e inundaciones, actualmente El Segundo Barrio es conocido como uno de los vecindarios de El Paso donde se puede apreciar una gran herencia mexicana creada por varias generaciones de siglos detrás en la región fronteriza.

Precisamente, es el vecindario en donde creció Cimi, hacievvndo de este lugar la sede de la mayoría de sus murales.

“Lo que queremos hacer es recordarle a la comunidad de todas las cosas grandiosas que hay dentro de ella, especialmente las que están escritas en la historia”, Cimi dice.

Cimi dice que le gusta llamar a sus murales, no tanto como obras de arte sino como historias.

“Los llamo mis historias porque un mural, desde mi punto de vista, tiene que contarte una historia.

spira es que la comunidad interactúe con mis historias y que hable de ellas”, Cimi dice. “Que digan ‘¿quién es esa persona y por qué está ahí?’ y que eso se empiece a generar una conversación dentro de la comunidad, recordando a cada uno de las historias que pasaron aquí en la frontera”.

El chicanismo es otra característica resurgente en Segundo Barrio. El término “Chicano” fue utilizado originalmente para insultar a los hijos de inmigrantes mexicanos a finales de los 1950s y fue después apropiado por esta generación para fomentar el activismo mexicanoamericano e identificarse como una fuerza política y social en E.U.A. Esta generación, era constantemente criticada por ambos lados por no ser “suficientemente estadounidenses” ni “suficientemente mexicanos”. Es por esto que, al acuñar el término, se utilizaron las raíces del Náhuatl, lenguaje oficial de los Aztecas, para identificarse como miembro “Mechica” o “Mechicano” y el término se termina usando como “Chicano.”

Cimi, quien se identifica como Chicano, también habla de su objetivo para representar artísticamente esta parte oculta en la historia de El Paso. “¿Cómo vas a estar orgulloso de algo que no conoces? Es por esto que tenemos que investigar y sacar estas historias y estos personajes, para recordarle a la gente de ellos”, Cimi dice.

Debido a esto, Cimi dice el aspecto esencial en sus murales tiene que ser el resaltar a algún personaje principal que surja de la frontera.

“Al empezar un nuevo proyecto, siempre trato de aprender sobre historia, sobre historia en nuestras comunidades específicamente”, Cimi dice.

MURAL ‘LA FRONTERA’ Un ejemplo del trabajo de Cimi y su objetivo de crear conversaciones a partir de murales que resalten la historia de la comunidad es el mural localizado en el Museo de Arte en El Paso.

“Mi mural favorito es el del museo, probablemente porque es el retrato más grande con el tamaño de dos historias. También es mi favorito porque fue un desafío.”

El mural “La Frontera”, que fue comisionado por el museo, fue hecho en 2018.

“Era cuando Trump empezó a hablar de la frontera y de los migrantes y de lo mala que era la situación y el muro y todo eso”, Cimi dice. “Así que quisimos retratar a algunas personas de la comunidad que fueran específicamente de frontera porque somos diferentes de muchos otros lugares”.

Cimi dice que la diferencia radica en una conexión profunda con Cd. Juárez y que por lo tanto “es una buena mezcla y quisimos representar eso”.

“Siempre he estado trabajando con Rezizte, pero estos dos proyectos yo si los gestioné completamente y por eso los firmo como Yorch”.

“Es por eso que tenemos a una mujer Tarahumara representando a Juárez y Chihuahua y a este hombre, Barragán, que es el hijo de Christian Barragán quien inició la banda de mariachi en la preparatoria Bowie”, Cimi dice. “Porque Bowie fue de las primeras, si no es que la primera preparatoria en tener una banda mariachi en los 90s así que Barragán siguió los pasos de su padre. También pusimos letras de una canción de Juan Gabriel donde habla de la frontera y de cómo es diferente y hermosa y cosas así”.

Para Yorch, el regresar del Museo de la Estampa en la Ciudad de México cuando se hizo una exhibición por parte de Rezizte, fue motivador al punto de querer ejercer completamente un proyecto de arte individual. Debido a esto, él empieza a buscar los fondos financieros y gestionar las dos obras que tardaron más de 8 años en completarse.

Según Cimi, el mural fue conocido como una fuerte respuesta hacia la retórica negativa de Trump en su tiempo y sigue manteniendo esa fortaleza.

MONUMENTO ‘SER FRONTERIZO’ En el ámbito escultural y de construcción, Yorch ha desarrollado dos esculturas en Cd. Juárez.

La primera obra se llama Mujer Fronteriza y consta de un tanque de agua en la colonia Salvarcar en Cd. Juárez que se pintó en el 2012. La segunda obra, llamada Ser Fronterizo, consiste en un camión partido a la mitad localizado en un espacio abierto en la intersección de la Avenida de Las Torres y Avenida Paseo de la Victoria. Esta es la obra favorita de Yorch.

“Estas ideas nacen en un tiempo donde Rezizte hizo una exhibición en el INBA (Museo de Arte del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes en Ciudad Juárez) en 2006 y es la primera vez que nosotros entrábamos al museo y era colectiva la exhibición”, Yorch dice. “Ahí cortamos un carro en pedazos en un yonke y la inter-

Yorch habla de la exhibición “el salón de la obediencia y la desobediencia,” donde él empezó a trabajar con material reciclado y según Yorch, se vuelve un pilar importante para Rezizte.

En Ser Fronterizo, Yorch explica el corte de camión significa la división de la frontera. Él dice haber elegido un camión, mejor conocido como ruta por los fronterizos, como base de su escultura en parte porque es un medio de transporte esencial en la vida de los fronterizos.

“Para mí es como englobar toda esa manera de usos que le damos en la ciudad y ponerlo como soporte de obra del mural, de lo que yo voy a pintar, pero al instalarlo de esta manera, hago la idea de que es un objeto de Estados Unidos que reutilizamos de muchas maneras”, Yorch dice.

La escultura está ubicada estrictamente de norte a sur, de manera que la parte del camión que se ubica al norte simboliza E.U.A. y la parte ubicada en el sur simboliza a México.

“Este objeto dividido a la mitad, esa división del espacio geográfico que es impuesta más que natural, esta división del camión sería la imposición de la división de la frontera”, Yorch dice. “El muro de concreto se difumina y ya nada más entra una franja en medio del camión que lo divide, pero sería la metáfora de que un día también se difuminará la frontera, pero la división aún sigue marcada con la pieza”.

Yorch también incluyó elementos de su propia vida al pintar esta escultura ya que su padre ha trabajado en E.U.A. la mayor parte de su vida de modo que Yorch ha tenido los “beneficios de la vida fronteriza sin cruzar”.

“En el sur, pinté un personaje que tiene alas que sería el emigrante y la parte del norte es como hablar de las familias que componen la frontera, no necesariamente Juárez. Porque, por ejemplo, mi familia tiene 10 y 11 años allá en El Paso y para que me vean tienen que venir y esa ha sido siempre la vida de nosotros”,Yorch dice.

El monumento Ser Fronterizo tiene un costo aproximado de dos millones de pesos mexicanos. La obra, que se inició hace cinco años, sufrió el cambio de administraciones municipales, falta de apoyo económico para su construcción y representa el reto más grande que Yorch ha tenido que superar en su carrera de más de 15 años como artista: convencer al presidente municipal de apoyar su obra.

“Hay todo un trabajo arquitectónico y de ingeniería alrededor de esta obra, aparte, las obras de los artistas grandes que admiro como Siqueiros,

cuando involucra más de tres artes, es cuando empieza a ser para mí la obra impresionante”,Yorch dice. “Estas construcciones ya tienes que trabajar con un arquitecto, que es para mí algo muy importante que logre con esta obra, que fue involucrar esas artes juntas y luego la ingeniería para poder lograr todo esto y que sea el respaldo del mural”.

Ambas partes del camión contienen una estructura que las sostiene por dentro. Es por esto que Yorch dice “es innegable que están ahí las matemáticas y tienes que ver que hay arte ahí también”.

El monumento también ha ayudado a Yorch a cumplir con su objetivo como artista.

“Cuando vengamos, la idea es que empecemos a hacer una discusión acerca del tema y del porqué, eso es parte de lo que yo si busco como artista. Yo disfruto hacer un ‘print’así pequeño con una idea original como disfruto terminar esta obra donde trabajaron y se involucraron cerca de 100 personas a lo largo de cinco años para lograr esto”.

ADVERSIDADES Y EN ESPERA DE ‘LO QUE SIGUE’ Ambos artistas coinciden en decir que su desafío más grande ha sido conseguir los fondos para las obras en las que se está trabajando.

“Como artistas, siempre tenemos el problema de cómo vamos a fondear este trabajo o el estudio o cómo vamos a seguir siendo artistas enfocados solamente en arte. La mayoría de nosotros tenemos un trabajo de 8 a 5 y no podemos solamente enfocarnos en el arte”, Cimi dice. “Creo que El Paso ha crecido

en las artes, pero desafortunadamente, no estamos en ese punto donde podemos renunciar a nuestros trabajos y ser artistas de tiempo completo porque aún necesitamos apoyo”.

Aparte de su trabajo, Cimi también maneja su propio estudio y su tienda Kalavera Studio Shop, donde vende pinturas, camisetas, calcomanias relacionadas al arte, entre otros artículos. Martin Zubia (aka Blazter), quién se graduó de UTEP en arte y se ayudante en Kalavera, dice que la filosofía de trabajo de Cimi es trabajo en equipo.

“Cimi y yo no batallamos para llegar a conclusiones y pienso que eso es raro.

Usualmente trabajo con otras personas y alguien quiere hacer una cosa – alguien más quiere hacer otra y cuando se quiere mezclar suele terminar en que la gente se separe”, Zubia dice. “Pasa que alguien va a querer vencer y dominar a otros mientras que con Cimi es un esfuerzo de equipo así que todos tenemos que arrojar ideas y prestar del mismo plato”.

Zubia, quien ha ayudado en todos los murales de Cimi, es el principal ayudante en Kalavera y, según Cimi, es un trabajador de valor en la tienda.

“Digamos que tú quieres ir al mecánico y el mecánico te va a explicar en términos que tú puedas entender y así, vas a saber qué parte de tu carro está rota. Entonces cuando la gente viene a Kalavera y ellos quieren saber sobre pintura de spray y preguntan cómo le hicimos para tener todos estos murales, Martin va a saber cómo explicarles lo que hicimos”, Cimi dice. “Él te puede decir toda la teoría y todas esas cosas y creo que es una de las mejores cosas que él ofrece, ayudar a otras personas a entender lo que puedes hacer con lo que vendemos aquí y cómo usarlo”.

Para Yorch, el desafío más grande ha sido convencer al presidente municipal de Cd. Juárez, Armando Cabada, para que se gestionaran los apoyos necesarios para construir Ser Fronterizo.

“Cuando uno es joven, ahora lo sé, tienes todo el ímpetu de que quieres hacer un cambio y lo quieres hacer ya, entonces caes en la desesperación y a veces haces acciones como cuando te quieres manifestar”, Yorch dice. “Conforme el tiempo pasa, ves que puedes hacer otras maneras de impacto, pero más duradero que no van a ser la emoción del momento”.

Yorch explica que en ese momento inicial él tenía la postura de no tener por qué hablar con un presidente para hacer cambios en la ciudad. “¿Por qué tener una plática o algo que arreglar con un presidente? Es esta figura

que se te crea cuando vas creciendo de que los políticos son corruptos que tienes que enfrentar en algún momento”, Yorch dice. “Entonces un día pienso que el cambio verdadero tiene que ser en un nivel más alto y ya no es nada más decirle a la ciudad sino que es esa negociación con la autoridad y contacto directo con quien si puede resolver ese problema”.

En cuanto a Cimi, lo que sigue para él es seguir experimentando, ya que para él es lo que hace a un buen artista.

“El seguir aprendiendo y el seguir pensando fuera de la caja es lo que hace a un buen artista. Creo que una vez que te quedas en un estilo por mucho tiempo, te hace viejo, así que un buen artista para mí tiene que seguir experimentando con las diferentes técnicas o tal vez mezclarlas”.

Las redes sociales, donde la mayoría de las personas en el mundo se han convertido en usuarios, han evolucionado y modernizado el sistema económico para que los negocios puedan promover sus propios productos.

De acuerdo a Statista, una página web donde líderes de datos de mercado proveen información sobre los consumidores, el número de usuarios de redes sociales en los Estados Unidos de 2014 a 2020 son millones y equivalen a tres cuartas partes de la población que usan las redes sociales.

Robin Grambling, profesora en el departamento de mercadotecnia y administración del Colegio de Administación Empresarial en la Universidad de Texas en El Paso, explica que la tecnología ha cambiado todo lo que en un negocio se hace de mercadotecnia, así como la distribución y la forma de comunicarse con los consumidores.

“Si ves promociones tradicionales o anuncios publicitarios tradicionales, los anuncios de radio e impresos fueron una

conversación de un solo sentido, provenientes de la empresa o de la marca, no pudieron obtener comentarios e información en tiempo real, pero las redes sociales han permitido hacerlo”, Grambling dice.

Para Grambling, las redes sociales también han permitido saber más de los consumidores por las diversas estrategias que las compañías usan al dirigirse a sus audiencias. Por ejemplo, las compañías utilizan encuestas cortas para saber las preferencias de sus consumidores, y así, satisfacer mejor las necesidades del consumidor.

“Hay muchas maneras de dirigirse específicamente al consumidor.

(Así) las redes sociales han elevado las relaciones a un mejor nivel”, Grambling dice. “Y esta relación (entre la compañía o la marca con el consumidor), les permiten a ambos tener esta relación en tiempo real, y a través de aplicaciones y este tipo de tecnología.”

Photographer: Veronica Martinez El emprendimiento de la generación virtual Una de las cosas por las que los “millennials” y la “Generación Z” son conocidos es por su alto uso de plataformas de redes sociales como Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat y otros medios.

Aubrey Oliver, estudiante de 22 años de psicología en UTEP, abrió su propio negocio de joyería en Etsy, un mercado en línea que se dedica a vender artículos hechos a mano. Ella utiliza la redes sociales como base en su negocio.

“Yo tengo y uso Instagram para mi negocio, y ayuda bastante porque digamos que tienes un cierto collar con ciertas piedras preciosas, en Instagram puedes usar los hashtags de tus gemas para que estén expuestas”, Aubrey dice.

Hace dos años, Aubrey empezó su negocio de joyería. Ella dice las redes sociales la han ayudado a tener éxito y un ingreso a bajo costo por la facilidad de permitirle trabajar en donde sea y cuando quiera.

“Usar las redes sociales es más fácil porque puedes hacerlo desde tu habitación o cualquier lado donde estés. Si tienes que escoger de otras formas de publicidad que envuelven personalmente, yo que no tengo carro y a dónde puedo ir es muy limitado”, Aubrey dice.

“Entonces uso las redes sociales que también alcanzan a otras personas que a lo mejor no tienen carro por numerosas razones o no tienen el tiempo de ir físicamente a una tienda”.

Para otras personas como Julio Cesar Mena, operador de 33 años y dueño de Café con Leche, Instagram es la plataforma donde vende su producto. Él anuncia su posición durante el día cerca de algún negocio en El Paso y va con su carro de café ofreciendo el producto. También su negocio funciona como servicio catering donde su promoción principal son las redes sociales.

“Ahorita por el estilo del negocio que tengo y como lo tengo, como lo estoy manejando, las redes sociales son lo único que necesito realmente ahorita”, Julio dice.

“Si fuera un lugar más accesible entonces usaría otros diferentes medios (como) flyers”.

Julio dice que las redes sociales pueden ser utilizadas exitosamente para cualquier negocio.

“Yo creo que es necesario, y negocios que no lo usan, pues la verdad nomas están haciendo un (dejando de utilizar un servicio) diservice ellos”, Julio dice.

Según la profesora Grambling, el no tener o no usar un tipo de red social en un negocio hace que sea probable que el producto no tenga éxito.

“Si tienes un buen producto, excelente precio y ubicación pero nadie lo sabe, entonces no vas a tener éxito”, Grambling dice.

Según Grambling, para esta nueva generación de millennials que buscan emprender un negocio o incluso comprar en línea, las redes sociales son la mejor manera de empezar un negocio y darte a conocer si es que no cuentas con los recursos necesarios para emprender tu negocio.

“Creo que siempre habrá un lugar para las tiendas, se verán diferente y probablemente pequeñas, pero a los clientes les gusta la experiencia y eso es lo que mantendrá a pie los negocios” Robin Grambling, profesora en el departamento de mercadotecnia de UTEP

“(Promoverte en redes sociales) es menos costoso y en muchas ocasiones es gratuito. La clave es simplemente construir tu red social y darte a conocer.

Claramente esa es la manera de empezar negocios pequeños”, Grambling dice.

¿Nueva tendencia o una adicción al celular?

Julio, quien apenas empezó su negocio hace cinco meses, explica la realidad de la mayoría de las personas que actualmente encuentran o buscan su información en las redes sociales.

“Si te pones a pensar, la gente se levanta y lo primero que hace es ver su teléfono, entiendo eso y también es generacional, es como la gente hoy en día es su estilo de vida, yo no me quise quedar atrás

en ese aspecto, y lo entiendo, entonces es una herramienta muy importante para cualquier negocio de cualquier tipo”, Julio dice.

De acuerdo con un estudio de Pew Research Center, al menos 88 por ciento de los jóvenes, entre edades de 18 a 29 años, consumen alguna forma de redes sociales.

Las redes sociales para Natalia Flores Sánchez, 23, son la base de su negocio Sin Popote Está Bien, en el cual ella dice que si no hubiera Facebook o Instagram, ella no tendría trabajo.

“Las redes sociales son la base para que eso suceda y para que el negocio continúe existiendo, es impresionante la cantidad de personas con las que te puedes conectar”, Natalia dice.

La idea de su negocio surgió por una experiencia que tuvo en Los Cabos, donde encontró una cantidad enorme de plástico que estaba varada entre las piedras, tratando de volver al mar.

En estos tiempos, las redes sociales se están volviendo en lo que las compañías antes le llamaban publicidad tradicional,

pero no significa precisamente que grandes compañías se dediquen sus ventas en línea, de acuerdo con Grambling.

“Creo que la gente se ha preocupado por eso, creo que siempre habrá un lugar para las tiendas, se verán diferente y probablemente pequeñas, pero a los clientes les gusta la experiencia y eso es lo que mantendrá a pie los negocios, la experiencia”, Grambling dice.

UTEP’s R1 Designation Gives Birth to New Hope By: Brandy Ruiz Cesar Gonzalez, a freshman student at The University of Texas at El Paso majoring in biological science with a biomedical focus and minoring in medical engineering, witnessed a woman giving birth in a hospital for the very first time when he was 17.

“It was shocking, but seeing that and being able to save lives and other things throughout that whole time made me realize that I wanted to be a doctor,” Gonzalez says.

Gonzalez was part of Silva Health Magnet High School’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), program and during his time participating in it, he was able to experience professionals in the medical field performing operations, helping births and even saving lives.

“My parents were excited for me because they saw how happy I was doing it. I was on my own and my mentality reached a point where it was ready to do more,” Gonzalez says.

Ever since Gonzalez was 15 years old, he’s lived on his own and away from his parents who reside in México City. But, he says, adapting to the change was not hard for

him as he began his journey in the medical field in high school, which was around the time he arrived in El Paso and his eyes were opened to the field of medicine.

These days, Gonzalez participates in Thomas Boland’s research at UTEP, who is a UTEP professor in Chemical Engineering, that is geared toward using 3D-printing technology to engineer tissue and to recreate aortas, the largest artery in a body, for those who suffer from health deficiencies.

“I enjoy the work because It’s very different from working in a hospital.

You’re potentially helping a lot of people in the long run instead of the amount that you see in the hospital daily,” Gonzalez says.

Although a freshman, Gonzalez considers himself a sophomore because of the amount of credits he has acquired through his classes. Not only is this fact something for which he feels a sense of accomplishment, but he is also proud of the fact that he has been participating in this research under Beu Oropeza, a UTEP gradstudent working on her doctoral degree in biomedical engineering while participating in research with Boland since his first week of his first semester at UTEP.

“(Oropeza) had all the materials ready and now she’s just working on actually getting things done,” Gonzalez says. “But, it’s difficult because (in the past) funding has been very specific and so we had to focus on one thing at time.”

Funding issues are common, but that may change. On Jan. 9 UTEP obtained the ‘Research I university’ (R1) distinction and now exists alongside schools such as UT Austin, Yale University, and Cornell University under this designation.

This category, created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, describes universities that offer a full range of baccalaureate programs, award 50 or more doctoral degrees each year, give high priority to research and receive $40 million or more in federal support.

Of the list of more than 130 institutions, UTEP has taken its place among both public and private institutions that have a very high level of research activity, according to Carnegie Classification.

“This newly earned Carnegie R1 classification in the Top Tier of national research universities strongly validates UTEP’s success in delivering on our innovative

access and excellence mission,” stated President Diana Natalicio in an article by UTEP’s student newspaper, The Prospector.

“It also powerfully affirms the stature of UTEP faculty researchers, the quality of their innovative work, and their competitiveness in securing funding to support it,” Natalicio continued. “Engaging our students, both graduate and especially undergraduate, in this growing research activity at UTEP provides them with outstanding learning opportunities and raises their aspirations to pursue advanced degrees and research careers.”

Roberto Osegueda, vice president for research and professor of Civil Engineering at UTEP, oversees all the research projects pursued by faculty on campus and has seen firsthand the kind of opportunities that students are open to after participating in research at UTEP. “It is a designation aspired to by many universities and we just happened to get it,” Osegueda says.

“We happened to be among a few select schools, 130 schools who have the R1 designation among many thousands of schools.”

At UTEP’s Expertise Connector (expertise.utep.edu), Osegueda showcased the countless UTEP research projects past and present, the students that have participated and the different types of degrees that students earned after completing their research.

“Hopefully in five years, I’m already in medical school like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T) or Harvard Medical School,” Gonzalez says.

“Anytime you have a student that’s engaged in research, they’re going to get something like a masters or a doctorate,” Osegueda says.

After completing research, Gonzalez believes he will be open to the opportunity of pursuing a higher degree.

Since Osegueda first started as the vice president for research, the amount of funding that has supported UTEP’s research has increased almost every year for the past 10 years, according to a 2018 Research and Development survey done by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

“With all the funding that is going to go towards research, it will give me a better chance (to pursue a higher degree). There’s no guarantee that I will get accepted but, there is a better chance compared to if I didn’t have anything done right now,” Gonzalez says.

“By obtaining the new title, we’re able to accomplish a lot more and do a lot more with our research that hopefully the new designation will help bring in. I can imagine only amazing things for UTEP’s research as a whole,” Gonzalez says.

Osegueda believes the new designation will open new opportunities. He says that the more funding that UTEP gets for

The wall. No matter where in the country you live, you know what it is. Aimed to be “an impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful southern border wall,” according to President Trump in his 2016 campaign, its idealistic existence promotes Trump’s movement for the advancement of border security and what he felt was paramount in keeping immigrants out of the country. This subject aggressively divided the country in two—those who sided with the President and the counter. What we failed to see was the third side—the lives of plants and animals coexisting within southern border cities.

“Ecosystems are dependent on wildlife on both sides. The biological integrity is in danger,” said Rick Lobello, educational curator of the El Paso Zoo and member of the Sierra Club Rio Grande chapter.

The border between the United States and México spans about 2,000 miles, stretching from the southernmost tip of the Gulf of México by the Rio Grande Valley in Texas to the Pacific Ocean along the California border. Shared by two countries, the Chihuahuan Desert spans hundreds of miles from Colorado, Arizona and Texas in the U.S. and spills into six states in México, including Chihuahua and Durango.

There are many species that live in the ecoregion. “El Lobo,” or the Mexican Grey Wolf, roams through the Big Bend area. The

long Mojave rattlesnake slithers through the hot sands of Arizona.

The Sprague’s pipit bird flies over the other 800 species of reptilians, amphibians, birds and mammals in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world, including more than 3,500 plant species like the sword-shaped leaved yucca and ocotillo plant. The parts of the wall that are already in place have already had some large effects on some of these species.

Another threat has been the long history of barriers that have divided this vast ecoregion for many decades.

“There’s always been this idea that you have to have a physical barrier,” said UTEP Political Science Professor Irasema Coronado.

According to a report by the Congressional Research Service, the United States Border Patrol has been erecting physical barriers to deter illegal entries and drug smuggling through San Diego’s border entry since the 1990s. A separate report by the Center for Biological Research says the new construction of the wall is likely to further imperil 93 species like the jaguar, Mexican grey wolf, and the golden eagle.

Moreover, the focus on illegal immigration reforms refer only to people immigration such as the Immigrant Responsibility Act and operations “Hold the Line” and “Gatekeeper” within the same decade. In both of

those operations, the solution is the construction of fence barriers to keep people out yet this damages species and the migration and the symbiotic relationship of both the fauna and flora on both sides of the border.

Under the George Bush administration, the Department of Homeland Security built a series of fences and installed sensors and cameras under the Secure Fence Act of 2006. Hundreds of miles of barriers along the southern border lasted five years, completing 649 of the 652 miles of reinforced fence, at a total cost of $2.3 billion.

The introduction of these border security measures were not the end of it. A few years later, the border was the talk of the nation once again.

Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign called for building a wall to keep illegal immigrants out of the country.

Trump’s proposed wall does not include provisions for wildlife and plant life. There is also potential damage on ecosystems as the federal government focuses on the administration’s “serious and ongoing commitment to fully secure our border, take the fight to criminal gangs like MS-13, and make our immigration system work for Americans,” according to the 2019 White House budget report.

The report also said it provides “funding for a wall on our Southwest border and additional resources for law enforcement at the Departments of Homeland Security

and Justice” as well as the funds to “increase in the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, Border Patrol agents, and immigration judges to improve enforcement at the border and within the United States.”

Under the Barack Obama Administration, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) chose Coronado as executive director in 2010. The goal for CEC was to promote environmental cooperation throughout North America to identify the best practices in environmental policies.

“There is a lot of support for collaboration and cooperation because there’s an understanding that we’re all in this together,” she said.

Over time, much of the Chihuahuan Desert region has been lost to degradation. Urbanization, cultural expansion and resource extraction have threatened the ecosystem.

In fact, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service places this region as one of the most endangered areas in the world.

The Rio Bosque Wetlands in the lower valley exists within the Chihuahuan Desert as a 367-acre park and has experienced many changes in past decades.

John Sproul is the coordinator and manager of the park and is also part of the Center for Environmental Resource Management at UTEP. Sproul said the park’s gradual changes have created a mosaic of different habitats. It has brought in a vast amount of different species of plants and animals alike to the region. But its flow of water, supplied by the Elephant Butte Reservoir, has faced water flow restrictions and resulted in degradation of the wetland that eventually became repurposed or cleared away.

“It was a really important part to the natural heritage of the region and from a broad point of view, that’s what’s been lost. The real diverse mix of different habitats and different plants and animals associated with them,” Sproul says .

The Rio Bosque runs parallel to the

Rio Grande River and the border wall. The 18-foot high barrier was constructed in 2007 and runs more than a mile beside the park.

Sproul is surprised to have witnessed the return of a beaver that had not been present in the park in almost 10 years. He said the disappearance of the beavers is an example of how many of the larger species cannot squeeze through the two inches of space that exists between the beams of the barriers.

“The big impact from the perspective of Rio Bosque was the way that the wall severed what had been an open connection between the park and the river corridor where terrestrial wildlife could move back and forth between the two areas,” he said.

The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, gave provisions to “waive all legal requirements determined necessary,” ensuring the construction of roads and the wall.

This waiver of legal requirements also gives authority to bypass 28 laws passed before – National Environmental Policy Act, National Historical Preservation Act, Endangered Species Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, according to a Center for Biological Research release.

Lobello is worried over the continuous harm on the species in this region. He says people need to become more connected with the natural environment that exists around them to understand and value it so that they can take more action to save it. His membership in the Sierra Club and his job as an educational curator for the Zoo allows him to actively promote sustainability and awareness of our region’s species.

“If we destroy it, it’s gone forever, and it becomes unsafe for the people who depend on these natural ecosystems just like plants and animals do,” Lobello said.

“Many species of animals, including endangered species, are put at risk by this project, and all alternatives that protect wildlife and the environment must be considered by law,” said Animal Legal Defense Fund Executive Director Stephen Wells in a statement.

As activists raise awareness, the construction of the wall has met more opposition. In June of last year, the Sierra Club of El Paso and other organizers like American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico and defenders of Wildlife gathered with 400 people near the Santa Teresa port of entry in New Mexico in a protest named “All Against the Wall.” The event gathered people to bring awareness of the impacts the wall has had on migrants, the communities on the border and the wildlife that exists there.

In addition to protests, lawsuits have also been filed to challenge the wall. The Center for Biological Diversity filed a lawsuit mid-February against the Trump Administra-

tion over the president’s emergency declaration made to pay for the border wall the day before.

promoting an idea to construct an “environment corridor”--an infrastructure project with a nationally composed group of 28 scientists and engineers.

Instead of a wall, there would be solar energy panels, wind turbines and natural gas pipelines. Providing close surveillance over these energy parks, border security would be an important aspect of its management.

“It would allow areas for wildlife to continue to migrate while alerting officials to anyone crossing the border illegally,” said Arizona State University professor Carlos Castillo-Chavez.

Despite this lawsuit and alternatives to a physical barrier, Trump’s demands have persisted through a declaration of national emergency at the border. This movement to access more than $8 billion in funding prompted a 35-day government shutdown. Congress has sinc passed a spending bill of $1.3 billion to include some border wall funding, but has left Trump unsatisfied, according to his own remarks when announcing the spending bill approval.

As for El Paso, Sproul says it is a cautionary tale for the rest of the cities along the border and he hopes for more awareness of the issues that have affected the border.

“We need to keep making people aware of what the issue is, why it is important, by supporting the organizations and political entities that are resisting the construction of additional border wall,” he said.

Coronado said that it’s up to the younger generations to speak out in opposition to the wall and stand up for the environment and wildlife along the border.

“That is just egregious what we have done, but it’s your generation that needs to fix this,” she said.
