The Texas Western Miners began the '53 sea on triumphantly when on Sept. 19, they rolled over the Sui Ross Lobos with a 26-7 score. The Miners started the season with alma t a 60 man squad - 21 of them returning lettermen. The Orediggers set their own pace in the first game by scoring in every period and allowing just one score by the opponents. Clovis Riley quickly came into the limelight with his spectacular 52 yard run to set up the scoring for the night.

The Orediggers came through easily with a 27 路 7 win to close the regular season with a ucces ful -2 showing. THE I TRA-M RAL ALL TAR VOLLEYBALL TEAM Intra-mural acti itte are divided into major and minor p rt . Tho e in the major group are football, volleyball oftball, basketball, swimming, and track. Tho e in the minor group are ping pong, pool, tennis badminton, and horseshoe .

Each team in the maj r p rts clivi ion receive 50 p int for entering 50 for first place, 2 5 for second, and 25 for each victory. In the minor clivi ion 25 point are given for entering, 30 for first place, 15 for second, and 15 for each victory.

Medals are given to the All tar Team members who are cho en for their individual ability from any team in the major port clivi ion by the Intra- mural Board. The Board also chooses the best intra-murals player to whom a trophy i presented. To the winning team in each sport, a trophy is given.

The team which has the most point at the end of the year receives the All Intra-mural Trophy.

WESLEY FOUNDATION In eptember of 1953, the Methodist students formed the Wesley Foundation, the local organization of the world-wide Methodist Student Movement. The group sent representatives to the New Mexico Conference at Silver City. Projects, such as a special service for St. Mark's Church and redecoration of classrooms at Highland Park Church, were completed. The We ley Foundation meets weekly for supper, fellowship singing, worship and recreation.

SIGMA GAMMA EPSILON In 1940 the Alpha Lambda chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon, national profesional fraternity for students of the earth sciences, was organized at Texas Western. The initiate must have an above average scholastic record and pre ent a technical paper to be eligible for membership. Nineteen students and three instructors are member of igma Gamma Ep ilon. The fraternity works toward a closer interest in the allied fields of geology, mining, metallurgy, and petroleum engineering.

TEAM

The TWC Rifle Team received national honors this year when it won first place in the Fourth Army Area, and the W. R. Hearst Army ROTC championship which qualified it for competition again~t ROTC units of the A.rmy, Navy, and Air Force in the Hearst National Defense Trophy telegraphic matches which it also won. High scorer for TWC was Arthur Najera, whose 193 points trailed the national champion, Donald R. Schessler of Montana State University by three points. Besides this the team placed second in the fifth annual Southwest Invitational Small Bore Rifle Meet which was held at TWC in March.

To the Student Council goes much of the credit for the very successful student activities which Te~as Western enjoyed this year. The Council was responsible for the new Student Handbook ~htch appeared in October. It made arrangements for the Magoffin Entertainme.nt .~eries .~hich tncluded the Dublin Players in "Pygmalion" and such movies as "The Bicycle Thtef. TraditiOnal student activities such as dances, "M" Day the Snow Fiesta, and all TWC Day are sponsored by the Stud~nt ouncil. Although special committees and groups were largely responstble .for the card s~ctton All Western Day, Religious Emphasis Week, and the ~ampus.
