TISA CONVENTION The annual convention of the Texas Intercollegiate Student Association met at Texas Western in March. Delegates representing 32 colleges and universities throughout the state of Texas convened to discuss and solve problems facing individual student councils in Texas. Delegates were received with open arms by TW and El Paso, and the beauty of El Paso and TW and foreign fascination of Juarez across the river left the collegiate emisaries with fond memories of their trek to westernmost Texas.

SING SONG Voices that fill the evening air of Greek meeting night filled Magoffin Auditorium last spring. Each fraternity and sorority on campus presented a program of close-harmony vocalizing. Songs old and new, some traditionally Greek, combined for a most enjoyable evening. Sigma Alpha Epsilon took first place in the men's division, while Zeta Tau Alpha presented the best feminine effort to take the award in that division.

Dynamite and sirens long before daylight proclaimed the arrival of M-Day. Hundreds of Miners trekked 500 feet up the slope of Mt. Franklin to repaint the M. Chow followed on campus, and then the pack of lovely, hungry Daisy Maes were loosed upon helpless L'il Abners. The mad flight ended as usual, with woman triumphant.

CHARLEY'S AUNT Beginning the season for College Players was the hilarious, perennial comedy, "Charley's Aunt." New talent combined with new director Charley Baker gave 1W audiences one of the finest plays in years. From curtain to curtain, the mirth-provoking entanglements of Charley and his equally scatter-brained friends piled laugh upon laugh. Love and reason triumphed as the final curtain descended upon the first Players success of the year.

EX-STUDENTS ASSOCIATION The Ex-Students' Association is an organization with a dual purpose. The first and foremost is to further the interests of Texas Western, and the second is to be of service to Exes by keeping them abreast of college happenings and binding ex-students all over the world together through their common interest in TWC. The campus link with exstudents is Cecilia Gil de Partearroyo, secretary of the association. Miss Partearroyo publishes a monthly magazine, The Nugget, for Exes, which prints vital statistics on Exes as well as what who is doing where. The arrangement of mutual service to the ex-student and the college keeps membership in the association high and ever-increasing. Among the more noted service of the association is the selection of the outstanding Seniors each year. One cooed and one male student is singled out and honored at a banquet each year.

In the form of a student affiliate chapter, some forty chemistry and chemical engineering students joined the American Chemical Society at Texas Western in Sept~mber of 1949. Since then their charter has been duly signed and sealed, and the organization has enjoyed a c~ntinual growth in membership. TEXAS WESTERN ENGINEERS The need for technically trained men in all functional fields of engineering continues to grow with the many advances now being made. Each year the nation's major mining, petroleum, manufacturing, electric and construction engineering concerns tum to Texas Western for graduates to fill their posts. El Paso ideally located, is a great mining and industrial center of the Southwest, with its large variety of geological formations. One of the largest custom smelters in the world is situated near the college, and within a short distance is also one of the world's largest electrolytic copper refineries.

The college, having geared its engineering department to the need of the individual student, and offering the finest of facilities, consequently produces some of the best trained and best qualified young men entering the field today.

A student chapter of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers was established at Texas Western in May, 1948 under the sponsorship of Floyd A. Decker, professor of engineering. The principal purpose of the local chapter is to function under the auspices of the national organization which is dedicated to aiding the progress and development of students of electrical engineering. This aid is accomplished by affording opportunities for students to carry on activities similar to those of the mother organization. Typical of these is the holding of meetings, pre路 sentation and discussion of papers, and participation in inspection trips to sites of interest to engineers.

In 1948 twelve men formed the local chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, an organization which has as its purpose the furtherization of the professional spirit among chemical engineers. Recognizing the fact that its benefits will extend beyond college and graduation, mining students are exceptionally eager to join AIME. Consequently, the organization's membership steadily grows. Benefits include subscription to a technical magazine on mining, metallurgy, and petroleum engineering. SEASON HIGH LIGHTS

Texas Western's Miners made good on Coach Mike Brumbelow's pre-season prediction by winning three of ten games in the 1951 season. The true story of the season, however, lies not in the cold, impersonal figures of statistics. The story of the '51 Miners is one of tremendous courage, hustle, and spirit in the face of superior, more experienced teams. Their performance against the Arizona Wildcats led Tucson sportswriter Abe Chanin to write "The underdog, courageous young Miners provided the best football show here in many years." The Westerners held the more experienced, beefy Wildcat crew to a fourpoint victory when Arizona was a three to four touchdown favorite. An identical showing was made against the powerful Tech Red Raiders the week following Tech's 41-0 slaughter of Arizona. The Raiders' relentless power ground out a 27-7 victory when pre-game predictions had Tech winning by astronomical figures. And the week following Tempe's 61-14 crushing of Arizona the Miners met them at Kidd Field. A final period touchdown and field goal gave the Sun Devils a 23-13 victory. On the brighter side was the Miners' season-ending victory over West Texas State, their 41-7 romping over the New Mexico Aggies, and their brilliant showing against New Mexico University, 32-7. The '51 season, although a losing one statistically, was a success for Coach Brumbelow and his young Miners.

The year of experience added to the courage and hustle of the Westerners make '52 season prospects bright indeed.

Kidd Field, Sept. 22-An outmanned and inexperienced band of Miners took the field against the powerful Eagles of North Texas State in the season opener at Kidd Field and ended up on the short end of a 33-0 score. The powerful Eagles took but three minutes to push across their first score, after taking over the ball on the Miner 27-yard line. Crushing line plays carried the distance in eight plays, with Ray Renfro carrying over for the first of his three scores for the evening. Later in the first period Renfro swept end and raced 73 yards for another counter to put the Eagles ahead 13-0. The Eagles scored twice in the second period on the line-smashing of Renfro and Ken Bahnsen and the half ended with the Miners trailing 27-0. In the third period the Miners put on their greatest offensive threat. Dick Shinaut brought the crowd to its feet with a brilliant 56-yard dash to the Eagle 17. John Connell smashed for seven more to 10 but there the Eagle line stiffened and North Texas took over.

Renfro ended his amazing offensive showing with a 40-yard touchdown pass to End Swann that made the count 33-0. Standouts for the Miners were Shinaut with 105 yards gained and Connell with 53 yards in 13 carries.

Kidd Field, Sept. 29 - Recovering from their initial loss to the North Texas Eagles, the Miners administered their annual drubbing of the New Mexico Aggies by a score of 41-7. TW picked up a total of 382 yards and converted them into six touchdowns. Halfback Jimmy Williams scored twice, and John Connell, Billy Davis, Clovis Riley, and Jack Burris scored single counters. Dick Shinaut made five of six conversions. Jimmy Williams began Miner scoring with a 43-yard dash over tackle. Gerald Campbell set up the second score with a 40-yard punt return to the Aggie 28.

Clovis Riley scored on the next play down the sideline. Alert Rene Rosas recovered a Farmer fumble on the A & M 33, and Williams and Connell combined to gain the score. Connell carried to the 27, Williams raced to the 2, only to be penalized back to the six. Then Williams smashed over 'center to score. Counter No. five came after Shinaut passed 27 yards to Jimmy Walker on the Aggie 27. On next play Shinaut bootlegged to the six, then smashed over center to the three. Connell went through the line for the counter. The final score came on a 79-yard drive, with Connell picking up 56 of the total yards, aided by a Shinaut pass and Riley's line plunging. Billy Davis carried over from the one-foot line.

Midland Stadium, Oct. 6-The Miners played one of the best games of the season against Abilene Christian College in Midland, only to lose 20-13. The Westerners drew first blood when Billy Bob Plumbley, subbing for injured Dick Shinaut, hitting Clovis Riley with a pass in the end zone. Ed Ammons converted to give the Miners a 7-0 edge. The first Wildcat threat was stopped on the Miner 23 by a fumble, but after an exchange of punts, ACC drove 81 yards for a counter. Tommy Hinson drove over from the nine and Faye Treadway's conversion knotted the count at 7-all. A punting duel filled the remainder of the first half, but Plumbley hit Jim Walker with a 34-yard pass deep in Wildcat territory as the gun ended the period. The second Miner score was set up in the third period by a Hinson fumble on the Wildcat 34. Connell carried over for the score after a series of line bucks put the ball on the four. Ammon's boot was wide and 1W led 13-7. ACC scored again on a 61 yard drive Hinson carrying for the final eight yards. The Miner line blocked the conversion' to make the score 13-13. A blocked punt gave the Wildcats the ball on the Miner 29 to set up the winning TO. A series of line plunges carried to the one-yard line. The Miner line held for two plays before Ted Sitton scored on a reverse. Treadway converted to make the count 20-13.

Arizona Stadium, Oct. 13 - An underdog band of Miners trekked to Tucson and played powerful Arizona off its feet before going down in defeat 15-19. Coach Mike Brumbelow pulled many surprises out of his bag to dazzle the astonished Wildcats, even throwing an ll-man line against the powerful Arizona ground game. The Miners filled 16, 500 partisan fans with despair by taking the kickoff on their own 30 and travelling 70 yards to score. Quarterback Billy Bob Plumbley passed twice to carry to the Wildcat 27. Fullback John Connell, behind great downfield blocking, swept the remaining distance to score. The conversion was wide- and the Miners held a 6-0 lead. The lead proved brief as Wildcat Back Gil Gonzales broke over guard on the second Arizona play and raced 74 yards to tie it up. The missed conversion kept the count knotted. A recovered fumble on the Miner 40, followed by a great 60-yard dash by Ken Cardella and a successful conversion put the Wildcats ahead 13-6.

After a punting exchange, the aggressive Miner forward wall forced Bruce McCauley to punt poorly to the Arizona 42. Connell picked up 15 yards, then Plumbley lassed to Clovis Riley who scored behind vicious blocking. Ammons tie it up 13--13 with his extra point. The Miners carried on a. series of plays following a fumble to the Wildcat one-foot line, where Arizona took over and tried to run it out. Walker and Christian dumped Cardella behind his goal for a safety to give the Miners a 15-13 lead. Arizona scored again on TW's most potent weapon, passing. Back Eddie Miller hit on five of six passes, the last one covering 16 yards to Glazier in the end zone to give Arizona a four-point victory when they were favored by two touchdowns.

Kidd Field, Oct. 2o-Still high from their terrific showing against Arizona, the Westerners throttled the single-wing attack of the New Mexico Lobos and turned on the offensive power to crush the visitors 32-7. The passing of Billy Bob Plumbley and the line smashing of John Connell, Jack Burris, and Clovis Riley proved too potent for the New Mexicans.

Miner End J. D. Birkhead recovered a Lobo fumble on the New Mexico 42 and Plumbley capitalized on it with a touchdown heave to Riley in the end zone. Ammons' kick was blocked to keep the score at 6-0. Neither team could muster scoring ability in the remainder of the half and 1W went to the dressing room with a six-point lead. The third period starting with the Miners taking the kickoff and scoring on a 71-yard drive.

John Connell smashed the final four yards and Shinaut kicked the extra point. Gerald Campbell intercepted a Lobo pass and returned it to the NM 27 to set the Miners' third score. Riley bucked over in three plays and the extra point was wide. Lobo back Arnett tossed to End Bret for the single Lobo counter and the score was 19-7. Riley scored on a series of line plunges for the next counter, and reserve back Noel McCormick went 23 yards through tackle to end the scoring at 32-7.

Nippert Stadium, Oct. 27-The passing combination of Billy Bob Plumbley to End Jim Walker accounted for all TW's scoring in their 18-53 loss to Cincinnati University. The powerful Bearcats were jn command throughout the contest as they scored almost at will. Power, experience, and beef proved too much for the young Miners in the fray. George Christian intercepted a Bearcat pass and returned it to the CU 24 to set up the first Miner tally. Plumbley passed to Walker on the first play from scrimmage for the counter. Alert Curtis Elam recovered a Cincinnati fumble on the CU 25 for the Miners' next counter. A seven-yard pass to Walker from Plurnbley accounted for marker. Leroy Gibson recovered a fumble on the Miner 28 and TW went all the way to score. A 23-yard pass Plumbley-to-Walker climaxed the drive. Cincinnati Quarterback Gene Rossi engineered the Bearcats to their seventh triumph as his passing netted 340 yards. Rossi passed to Jarvis for the first Bearcat marker and Bob Dougherty scored twice in the first period. The other Bearcat scores were made by Dix Anthony on a 13-yard dash; Joe Concilla on a two-yard line buck; a 52-yard Rossi pass to Staub; and Jack Hill's pass to Jack Delaney.

Kidd Field, Nov. 3-Texas Tech's mighty Red Raiders came to EI Paso expecting a light workout with Texas Western's Miners but found a tough job ahead of them. Again it was the story of power, weight, and experience against spirit, courage, and hustle as Tech rolled to 27-7 victory. Texas Western's only score came on the opening kickoff of the second half, when back Noel McCormick brought the crowd to its feet with an electrifying 89-yard dash behind perfect blocking to SCore. McCormick took the ball on his eleven, angled toward the sidelines, behind vicious down field blocking, was in the deaf at 35 and easily outdistanced the defensive backs to paydirt. Ed Ammons' conversion was successful to give TW seven points. Jim Turner climaxed line-smashing 80-yard Tech drive by smashing over from the one for the Raiders' first SCore after nine minutes of play. In the second period Turner duplicated his feat with a 44-yard sweep around end to put the Raiders ahead 14-0. Cavazos capitalized on a Miner fumble to give Tech its third score, and a few minutes later, Phillips intercepted a Miner aerial and returned it to the TW nine.

Arterburn blasted over the middle four plays later for the final score.

Abilene, Nov. 9 - Texas Western's Miners met a bigger, more experienced Hardin-Simmons team at Abilene and for three quarters held the Cowboy scoring machine to one marker per period. Then came the fourth quarter and the Cowboys went wild to score 26 points. The Western offense tor the night, passing, proved to be their down tall as interceptions broke up every drive the Miners could launch. The Cowboys unleashed a crushing ground game after taking the initial kickoff and marching 81 yards to score. Quarterback Bob Hart circled end for the final five yards.

In the second period Hart completed a touchdown pass to Bill Cagle for the second Cowboy score. Dunny Goode scored behind a cordon of Blockers in the third period, and in the fourth period everything happened all of it wrong. Interceptions led to three of the four markers. Riddle passed to Cagle for the first TO; Yanez swept end 37 yards and the second counter; Barrett intercepted a pass and raced 50 yards for the third; and Cox swept over guard and went 74 yards for the final marker. John ConneJl and Clovis Riley provided the ground attack for the Miners and Billy Bob Plumbley and Billy Davis passed for consistent yardage, only to have interceptions break up every drive they sparked.

Kidd Field, Nov. 17 - The Miners met the high-flying Tempe Sun Devils the week after the Sun Devils had humiliated Arizona's Wildcats by a score of 64- I4 and brought the Tempe crew down to earth with never-say-die hustling and brilliant defensive maneuvers. Power and weight earned a 23-13 victory for the Tempe visitors. A roughing penalty in the final minutes was the break which gave the Sun Devils their clinching touchdown. The roughhouse slashes of Marvin Wahl in and Bobby Tarwater had smashed to the Miner 15 where the rules infraction occurred. The penalty advanced the ball to the one and Wahlin drove over the clincher. A few minutes before Tempe had gone ahead 16-13 on Claude Sanson's precision field goal. The Miners scored first after Gerald Campbell had returned a punt to the Sun Devil 27. A Plumbley pass was intercepted and returned to the 17路, but Tempe fumbled on first play and Bobby Dirrneyer recovered on the six. Plumbley rammed over center to the six-inch line and Connell rammed over on next play. The second Miner counter came after line-smashes of Noel McCormick and Jack Burris carried to the Tempe six. Clovis Riley drove over for the TO.

Amarillo, Nov. 24-A thrilling victory over the West Texas Buffaloes at Amarillo closed out the season for Coach Mike Brumbelow's young Miners. The final score was 13-7, with Gerald Campbell providing the first touchdown on a sensational 70-yard punt return behind great down field blocking in the second period and the second counter was scored by Jack Burris late in the final counter. Center Bud Roland intercepted a Buffalo pass on the Miner 40 to set up thefinalcounter. Crunching ground smashes carried. to the six-inch line in 12 plays, and Burris blasted over to give the Miners a 13-7 edge. West Texas drew first blood in the second period when Bobby Clark climaxed a 43-yard drive by sweeping around end from the 10 yard line. Campbell's jaunt tied it up and Ed Ammon's conversion put the Miners ahead to stay. The game was played on even terms except for the Miner scoring. Each team had 14 first downs and the Buffaloes gained 308 yards to 237 for the Miners. Four Miner pass interceptions and the punting of Dick Shinaut gave the Miners the edge in the clash.

BASKETBALL The '51-'52 basketball season was not one of the better seasons for the Miners, as defeats overshadowed victories, 17 to 8. Thrills and excellent performances, on both individual and team levels, were evidenced over the season.

The best performance of the year was against Arizona's Wildcats, as the Miners fought all the way to earn a 70-64 victory. Center Gerald Rogers was leading team scorer with 377 points, and game average of 15.1 points. Merrill Autry garnered 298 points for the runner-up position.

Track at Texas Western in '52 reached the highest peak of the postwar era. Coach Dale Waters corralled many top athletes and built an excellent squad around Captain Javier Montes and all-around athlete John Connell.

Other holdovers from the '51 squad are John Birkhead, Bobby Dirrneyer, Noel McCormick, and Dick Shinaut. Added to these are three outstanding freshmen who placed in the Texas High school track meet last spring, Jack Burris, 220 and 440-yard dash; Howard Creamer, high jump and broad jump; and Don Floyd, hurdles. Montes and Connell both are pointed at the Olympic Tryouts and the honor of representing the Unj~ed States on the international field of competition. Montes continued settmg records in his outings, the first mark to fall being the Border Olympics mile. As the season progressed, Captain Montes led the Miners to the best track year in the postwar era.

Men's Intramurals got off to an exceptionally good start in the '51-'52 year with many strong teams competing for the Grand Intramural trophy. The Cavaliers took an early lead with a victory in the Basketball tournament, augmented by placing in Volleyball.

They were undefeated in football at the time of this writing and showed excellent prospects of beating out the strongly-contending Sigma Alpha Epsilon group for the trophy in that sport. Representation in the various tournaments gave many athletes a chance to perform and provided one of the better intramural programs in years. Competition was high, with the teams being evenly balanced. Intramural Director Robert (Dusty) Caroline outlined an extensive and comprehensive program and expressed great satisfaction at student participation.

WOMEN'S ATHLETICS

Lack of interest in cooed intramurals in past years brought about the creation this year of the Women's Athletic Association, sponsored by Mrs. Kathleen Craigo and dedicated to the promotion of health and poise among Texas Western co-eds. Participation from the beginning was excellent, with volleyball, basketball, rhythms, tennis, and other sports on the agenda. Delegated authority to student sport directors was a large factor in the extensive cooed participation, as every woman's organization on campus, as well as independent women's groups, was represented in competion.

Winners of 51 consecutive shoulder-to-shoulder matches, the Texas Western rifle team has made a name for itself in the shooting circles of the Southwest.

A total of nine trophies and some 90 medals have been won by the Western shooters in the past two years.

Among the tournament which the TWC rifle team has won are included the Southwest Invitational in 1951, second in the Invitational in 1952, first in the Paso Del Norte league for 1951 and 1952, first in the New Mexico Open Tournament in 1951.

This year the Western team took the first place William Randolph Hearst trophy for the Fourth Army Area. This area is made up of the states of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

The credit for this fine team goes to the sponsors of the team, the military science department of Texas Western. Lieut. Wayne McGrath, who founded the team in 1949, was called away from the college in the fall of 1952. His place as sponsor of the team was taken over by Sgt. Alvin Galus who -devoted more than enough time to keep the team on the winning trail.

Col. Evans R. Crowell, professor of military science and tactics, gave the team his whole hearted cooperation and support and was in a large way responsible for making Third Annual Southwestern Invitational Small Bore Meet a huge success.

With 20 teams from all colleges of the Southwest and as far west as California, attending the three day Meet, Texas Western's ROTC department and the rifle team are looking forward to an even move successful season next year.

All prospective actors and actresses at Texas Western should aim for membership in Alpha Psi Omega, the national honorary dramatic fraternity on campus. Members, having previously demonstrated their ability and merit in College Players productions, represent the very best in campus talent. A group whose purpose is to furnish incentive for higher quality dramatic work, it also provides information and intercollegiate contracts. Founded in 1925, Alpha Psi Omega is the largest national college organization in any departmental field with 230 college chapters.

A national organization with the definite purpose of bettering the college and university bands in the United States, Kappa Kappa Psi was founded at Oklahoma A. & M. in 1919. The local chapter, Alpha Chi, was installed at Texas Western in April of 1947, and is one of the most active and respected honorary organizations on campus. Among other activities, the group actively supports the band, raises funds, and concentrates its efforts toward a large and better Texas Western band.

The most recent honorary organization on the Texas Western campus is Pi Delta Phi, composed of French students and founded here on April 27, 1951. The national organization was founded at Berkeley, California, in 1906. Members, the most outstanding among French students at Texas Western, consist of 7 regular members, 2 special members, and 6 honorary. The group strives to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the French language.

Linguists at Texas Western find membership in Sigma Delta Pi a highly satisfactory affiliation. A national honorary Spanish fraternity, it was founded at the University of California in 1919, and since then has concentrated it efforts toward promoting an intere t in cultural and literary Spanish influences; toward providing a nucleus for Spanish language student activities and regional meetings; and toward rewarding those who show special attainments and interest in the field. Alpha Iota chapter was granted its charter in February, 1937, and was installed in April of that year. Active members must be enrolled in an advanced Spanish class, and have a B average in Spanish and C in all other courses.

The increasing number of women in college bands across the country promoted the formation of an honorary girls' band organization at TEXAS TECH in the fall of 1939.

The new organization was based upon the same principles as Kappa Kappa Psi, honorary fraternity for bandmen. The group received its charter on March 6, 1946. Dedicated to promoting band work among college students and to encouraging musical ability and cooperation in musical organizations of colleges and universities, Tau Beta Sigma also helps new students adjust themselves to new environments upon entering college.

Intercollegiate speech tournaments held at Abilene Christian College and in Tuc on this year saw the Texas West路 ern Debate Club take honor in several divi ions. Members walked away with awards, many of them first, in oral interpretation, after dinner speaking, original oration, and argumentation. From seventeen to nineteen colleges cornpeted in the tournament.

Advantages of membership are numerous, among them the opportunity to improve powers of oral expression.

ARCHITECTUREOF TEXASWESTERNpresents a spectacle both unique and beautiful. Only in the mountains of far - away Tibet can counterparts of this architecture be found. Angular lines, sweeping, overhanging roofs, and rugged simplicity give campus buildings a beauty which fits into and flatters the rugged hills and terrain of the campus. Years of care by landscapers and gardeners have produced beautiful, rolling lawns in the andesitic soil.

Buildings reflect the growth of Texas Western. Old Main, Kelly Hall, Burges Hall, and Seamon Hall were among the first. Later

buildings reflect a modification of the rugged simplicity of architecture, with the Centennial Museum, Engineering Building, Benedict and Worrell Hall in this era. A new era was introduced with the building of Administration, and the postwar building continued with the elaborate ornamentation. Bell Hall, Hudspeth, Miner Hall, Cotton Memorial, Student Union Building, and finally the Science Building and Magoffin Auditorium complete the cycle.

Tradition and utility are bound together in each building, and the complete picture is one beauty unique in this hemisphere.
