The first El Paso Sun Carnival took place in 1935, the year before the event became tied to a football bowl. Since 1936, the Sun Bowl has pitted first high school and then college football teams against each other in games usually played in late December or on New Year’s Day. Since the 1960s, the celebration has also included a basketball tournament.
