LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Halloween is upon us! This means pumpkin-carving, seasonal hot drinks, and cold(ish) weather.

Halloween means a lot of things – but one of the first in mind for many students are the numerous parties occuring all over. After these past few weeks of midterms, it’s always good to blow off a little steam, but keeping consent and safety in mind is always important. Take this hectic social time as prime opportunity to take advantage of our school’s numerous resources – SafeWalk being the most pressing.

The close of this month reminds us that the end of the semester is quickly approaching. The next few weeks will be draining, and we certainly aren’t out of the woods yet. But at the end of the day, our university is always here to support us until we can run back into our parents’ houses in time for the holiday season.

You’ll find them searching for misplaced modifiers on the third floor of the Belo Center for New Media. Booking an appointment online guarantees you a 30-minute one-onone session with a peer writing coach.

Squeezed for time, but still need to be sure that writing is clean? Try this Writer’s Emergency Editing Checklist: • Is every sentence complete with a subject, verb and an object?

• Have I spelled every name correctly and checked every proper noun?

• Is my tone appropriate for this assignment? Journalists keep it simple. Research papers demand more academic language.

• Do the subjects and the verbs agree? A singular subject takes a singular verb.

• Am I consistently using past tense or present tense?

• Read it aloud. Does it flow or am I tripping over awkward phrases?

• Am I using active voice? If I can use the words “by a zombie” after the verb, the sentence is probably passive.

ORGANIZATION-OF-THE-MONTH:

NSSLHA National Student Speech Language & Hearing Association

When people think of Speech-Language Pathology, they don’t often understand the true meaning of the profession and how widespread its impact is. The National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA) here in Moody have made it their mission to change that. NSSLHA is actually a student branch of the national American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) that has many chapters all throughout the country, Moody’s chapter being just one. This student chapter works to expose people to the work and community of Speech-Language Pathology, creating much-needed awareness for the field.

NSSLHA focuses on three pillars: advocacy, service, and membership. Active members are required to get at least five service hours per semester. They are also required to get two advocacy points which they can earn by advocating for stroke victims and stroke awareness, participating in events like ACL earplugs and standing up for issues within the community. They hold social events and study hours for members and have a very small, tight-knit community. That being said, anyone can get involved in NSSLHA. The organization was designed for any students that have an interest in speech and hearing disorders and what they can do to help. All you have to do is attend one of their meetings, pay dues, and participate in events to become a member of the organization. NSSLHA’s next meeting is Oct. 24 at 5:30p.m. in PHR 2.108.

Through their work, NSSLHA hopes to spread a sense of awareness here on campus about their major. They host speakers from different fields of Speech-Language Pathology to better educate members about opportunities within the field, and participate in events and challenges to spread awareness to everyone about the importance of Speech-Language Pathology. Currently, NSSHLA here at Moody is participating in the #silencechallenge through Austin Speech Labs, an organization that works with people who have suffered strokes and lost their speech ability or motor skills. The purpose of this challenge is to experience what it is like to lose the vital modality stroke victims do by nominating someone to be silent for an hour. If silence is broken, you are encouraged to donate to Austin Speech Labs to help their crucial work with stroke victims.

The work that the NSSHLA does both on and off campus is to raise awareness for the Speech-Language Pathology community and the issues that it faces. These issues affect people everywhere and their mission is to help more people understand these issues and how to help.

BE THERE OR BE SQUARE You know that old box you haven’t used since moving into your apartment, and is probably still lying in the middle of your living room floor? Upcycle and use it as your costume. Cut holes for your arms and head, then simply slide on your new cardboard masterpiece. You’ll bring “being square” to a whole new level.

But little did you know, Facebook just became a little more useful to you. This Halloween, consider being Facebook. That’s right. Just write “book” somewhere on your face, and you’ve got yourself a pretty legitimate Halloween costume.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT I have always been passionate about the way in which information about hearing loss is communicated to patients and their families.

Communication Sciences & Disorders, a major in the Moody College of Communication, encompasses a wide variety of focuses in speech, language and hearing. Undergraduate students within this major have the choice of studying Audiology, Speech-Language Pathology and Deaf Education/Deaf Studies. These students have the opportunity to engage with research and hands-on experience at the Speech and Hearing Center, as well as the Lang Stuttering Institute. Most students from CSD go on to graduate programs to pursue clinical positions within their specialization. We met with two CSD graduates who are now attending a graduate program or working as a specialist

Shelby Callaway (UT ‘17) studied Audiology and Deaf Education and was involved in Communication Council and served as an undergraduate Teaching Assistant for entry-level American Sign Language (ASL) classes during her time as an undergraduate student. Allie Jensen (UT ‘15) studied Speech-Language Pathology and was also involved in Communication Council as well as opportunities within her major and classes.

search experience in undergrad, but it was so great that Moody offered this, and this experience helped prepare me for grad school. The CSD professors in the Moody College of Communication were really excellent and had so much knowledge, as well as cutting edge research that they were able to share. I felt the workload at UT also prepared me to balance my graduate school coursework and practicum successfully.”

While passion for their studies is a commonality for all Moody students, individuals within CSD are often led to their specialization by incredibly inspiring and life-changing moments.

Shelby is currently a first year student in the Doctorate of Audiology program here at UT Austin. While she has much more to learn, she is currently interested in counseling families with children who are in the beginning stages of their journey with hearing loss. Allie graduated from the University of Texas at Dallas this past May and currently works as a Speech-Language Pathologist intern in Fort Worth ISD, working at an Elementary School with mostly kids with Autism.

“I am hard-of-hearing and have been visiting an audiologist almost my whole life. I have always been passionate about the way in which information about hearing loss is communicated to patients and their families. My experiences growing up with hearing loss are what inspired me to pursue audiology and change the way people view hearing loss,” said Callaway.

The foundation created for students by the CSD program not only prepares to become competitive graduate school applicants but also compassionate and determined professionals within their field.

“During my undergraduate career at UT, I was able to enroll in a class that allowed me to participate in research where I provided speech therapy to a child. It is rare to get clinical and re-

Current CSD students as well as alumni continue to advocate for individuals affected by communication differences & disorders and promote a culture of respect for others. The department also encourages awareness among other Moody and university students through events and programs, such as outreach for International Stuttering Awareness Day on Oct. 22.

MEN OF MOODY As of the UT 2015 Fall Enrollment Report, The Moody College of Communication recorded 1,519 female and 620 male students. With this undeniable difference in mind, we asked the Men of Moody about their experiences and unique perspectives, including their involvement and passions.

COLTON MORRIS WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE GENDER IMBALANCE IN MOODY? “In my Moody classes, I find myself surrounded by an absurd amount of talented people with many different gender identities and backgrounds. While much of how they identify themselves informs the ideas that they have, I am a firm believer that one’s sense of self does not rest solely upon what box they check on a form. It is important that people of all walks of life have a voice, the diversity present in Moody is a wonderful indicator as to how the concept of mass communication continues to be defined, as something more inclusive than ever.”

CONNER JANSEN WHAT MOODY-AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS ARE YOU INVOLVED IN? “I am the Social Coordinator for the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA). We are the organization in Moody for CSD majors. It is a nationally recognized organization by the American Speech Hearing Association (ASHA). It’s an awesome org for CSD people to hangout with other CSD majors and find amazing ways to start working in the field through service opportunities (and it looks great on Graduate applications, if you’re a CSD major reading this right now).

Finally, I am in my first semester of the Senior Fellows Honors Program in Moody. It is an amazing program for students from diverse backgrounds to have amazing discussions about society in America and the World. If you have the opportunity to apply, I highly recommend it for anybody who enjoys conversation, especially conversations about deep and difficult topics.”

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR MAJOR? “I can immerse myself into making things, everything from scrawling page after page of jokes to creating intricately designed research presentations. The Advertising program provides you with the tools necessary to find your own critical lens by which to process the world around you and then gives you the space to make something of it. It’s something I am incredibly fortunate to be a part of.”

I am an undergraduate member for the Student Audiology Association. It is basically the same thing as NSSLHA, but specifically for Audiology majors since we are the minority in the CSD world.

STEREOTYPES OF THE COMMUNICATION MAJOR If you look around Moody College of Communications, you will find the student population to be dominantly female. If you ask University of Texas’ students their opinions on Communications majors, you will find a common thread of stereotypes such as social, friendly, and passionate. However, these positive truths lead communications as a discipline to be viewed as both feminine and less worthy of respect: two related concepts. These ideas originate from myriad reasons, some straightforward, some intersectional, and some deeply embedded, so we will touch on two specific reasons.

Firstly, there is an underlying societal belief that men are naturally leaders and women are naturally emotional. There is no altering or changing of this ingrained idea. Men are expected to fall into traditional career roles like business, engineering, or science. This is what will make the most money and make one a leader, in both the industry and in the nuclear family setting. However, women are not held to this same expectation. Women are allowed if not expected to be a bit more passionate and less monetarily focused.

Secondly, when it comes to communications as a major, people have the sentiment that Petersen & Almaguer sum up best, “When the word is heard by those unfamiliar with major, its definition is taken literally and the stereotype of Communication classes consisting of solely talking is developed. To further this idea, most students’ opinion of themselves is that they have already mastered the English language, so there is no point for them in majoring in something ‘they already know how to do.’” People hold the belief that communication is natural and easy. Humans naturally develop communication skills in the most simplistic of terms and so studying other disciplines often seems much more practical.

this though. It is advertising, journalism, entertainment. It’s lobbying in causes and diagnosing or treating auditory problems. It’s representing the public face of a company and succesfully navigating the corporate world.

This list does not even begin to encompass the full realm of communication disciplines.

Unfortunately, these embedded gender roles and effects have led to deep stereotypes that display themselves in a variety of settings from one-on-one conversations to industry practices. To look deeper into these stereotypes, we composed a survey to send to our fellow UT students and asked them to pick adjectives that describe the “typical” student in McCombs School of Business, College of Natural Sciences, Moody College of Communication, and College of Liberal Arts. The list of adjectives for each school were the same: professional, studious, friendly, ambitious, passionate, practical, cultured, social, responsible, sensitive, and self-assured. All adjectives are positive. Out of 277 results from students across all majors, the responses show a clear skew of opinions. The top three words associated with each major are shown to the right. The most shocking finding was only 6% of people described Moody students as studious and 8% as practical. Considering 61 of the respondents in Moody College of Communication, this means that at least 20 people did not use these adjectives to describe themselves.

While saying you’re majoring in Communications often leads to negative stereotypes, it is important to dispute these views and educate yourself and others on all that communications, the major and industry alike, entail. Communications plays an increasingly important role in the future because of constantly changing technology, which heavily relies on communication abilities and skills.

At the top of the list of lacking October box office performances was Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic Blade Runner (1982). In the sci-fi genre, nothing is more eminent than the questions of moral philosophy posed by the original film. The movie, or now the franchise, explores some of the most controversial questions facing humanity in the age of technological advancement: the line between human and AI, the emotions of androids, and the consequences of sentimental memory.

cal abilities, and his determination to uncover the secrets of the world he exists in. These very secrets stem directly from the events post-Blade Runner (1982), so the film takes an unhurried but wellpaced path that carefully bridges the 35year gap between films.

Blade Runner 2049 is very different from its predecessor, but is inextricably connected with the created world. How linked to human society is artificial intelligence? Is the advancement of android technology directly correlated to human progression or will our society plateau as we forgo men for robots? Blade Runner 2049 tackles these with an immersive, slow burn experience.

There are standout moments in the film that make it obvious that there were few, if any, women on the creative team, a trend seen often in sci-fi films. The female characters in the movie, however, have relatively solid foundations and development. Joi seems like a shallow “Her” at first, but is ultimately a pivotal character.

Luv showcases streamlined ferocity, a drive for success, and provides a female parallel to K’s hardiness. Both women are in-line with the world onscreen, but never fully realize their potentials, where a few extra lines of dialogue, especially for Luv, could have made her as dynamic a character as K.

not updated for the world we currently live in, that audiences are familiar with and participate in daily. This trait makes it feel like year 1982-movie in 2017.

Blade Runner 2049 is a technically gorgeous film. Cinematographer Roger Deakins strings together a mesmerizing visual masterpiece that invaluably assists the narrative’s immersion. Hans Zimmer’s score connects the original movie’s iconic sounds with music that fits the story building of Blade Runner 2049.

While the resolution of the film ties up many plot lines, it doesn’t quite catch every loose end. There are a few standing questions that aren’t answered, but can be explained away by assumption. Still, throughout all of Blade Runner 2049, there is a strong precision and certainty that makes clear Villeneuve’s love for the original classic.

Don’t forget to let go and let yourself have fun - it’s okay to not have a plan! Be sure to make time to spend with those close to you and enjoy the upcoming holiday season.

ADVERTISING Your innovative nature and positive, go-with-the-flow attitude make you one of the greatest people to be around! Advertising is hard though, always thinking about other people’s perception can be exhausting. Remember to take a step back and let the positivity that impacts other’s lives impact yours as well!
