Dear New Mocs, Everyone has a story—including you. Until now, your parents, teachers and mentors have helped shape yours. But from here on out, you’re the author. The choices you make, the risks you take and the experiences you embrace will shape this next chapter. Your family, friends, and the UTC community will be there to support you every step of the way. But the story from here is yours to write. It starts with showing up. So go to class. Nothing beats the energy and connection of being there. And at UTC, “class” can refer to a science lab, a mixed-media studio, the Tennessee River, a neighborhood clinic—or any place where students engage in real-world learning that is built into the Chattanooga community. There’s so much here to explore, so find something that lights you up. Go to a game, join a club or visit the ARC. If what you want to do doesn’t exist yet, create it. Take it from me; I stayed pretty involved in college, but I still wish I’d done more. Don’t miss your chance. Study hard. Be curious. Be bold. Have fun. Go Mocs!
Dr. Lori Bruce Chancellor

Get to know us better OUR HISTORY
Founded in 1886 first as a private college, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga became a public institution in 1969 when it affiliated with the University of Tennessee. UTC is one of five public universities that make up the UT System. This is “Old Main,” built in 1886—the first building on campus—which housed classrooms, laboratories, the library and dormitories. Though the building was torn down long ago as campus grew, its image serves as a reminder of UTC’s longstanding history.
MEET SCRAPPY
Named after the University’s legendary football coach A.C. “Scrappy” Moore, our mascot is the ultimate Moc! You can spot Scrappy at events on campus and around Chattanooga.
Rep the Power C and show your school spirit!
WHAT IS A MOC?
Moc is short for mockingbird, the state bird of Tennessee. Known for fiercely protecting its home with gusto, the Moc became a perfect symbol of our student body’s determined spirit.
