26 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT

Page 1

DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS,

Thank you for the extraordinary support you continue to provide to Utah Tech University. Your generosity and involvement help create transformative opportunities for our students and strengthen the future of our institution.

At Utah Tech University, our mission is rooted in preparing students through hands-on learning, meaningful mentorship, and experiences that connect education with real-world impact. As we launch Uniting Trailblazers: Strategic Plan 2030, a bold vision that will guide our university’s future and strengthen our impact across the region, we remain committed to expanding academic opportunity, fostering innovation, and deepening our connection with the communities we serve.

The University is entering an exciting new chapter of growth and momentum. Soon, Utah Tech will begin a landmark fundraising initiative designed to advance scholarships, teaching excellence, campus infrastructure, and community partnerships across the region. The success of this historic effort will only be possible through the continued partnership and generosity of our donors, alumni, community advocates, philanthropic foundations, and business leaders whose belief in Utah Tech helps move our mission forward.

Community support has always been central to Utah Tech’s story. From the institution’s earliest days, local residents made sacrifices to establish and sustain the University, even during times of significant financial hardship. That spirit of commitment and shared purpose continues today through those who invest in the future of our students and our region.

Thank you for your continued belief in Utah Tech University and in the students whose lives are forever changed because of your generosity .

THE LEGACY OF AVENNA GAIL SMITH

LIVES ON AT AVENNA PLAZA

The newly renovated America First Performing Arts Center now features a meaningful addition that honors a beloved member of the community - some many recognize, though perhaps not by her first name, Avenna. Serving as an entry to the arts center, the Avenna plaza has a plaque dedicated to Gail with the following message:

“This plaza is named in honor of Avenna Gail Cooper Smith, whose vision and generosity reflect the rich heritage of Utah’s Dixie and its ties to Utah Tech University.

The Avenna Plaza is the gateway to fine arts, athletics, and technology. It is a gathering place uniting students, families, and neighbors - providing a space to exchange ideas, discover talents, and form lifelong friendships.

In appreciation of Gail and Hyrum Smith’s contributions, and to reflect their deep gratitude for the founders’ vision for this University, may Utah Tech continue to be a place of connection for learning, creativity, and belonging for generations of Trailblazers who gather here.”

We are profoundly grateful for Gail and Hyrum and the vision they have shared with Utah Tech University and the community. Their commitment to education, the arts, and the community will continue to inspire generations to come .

STRINGS OF GENEROSITY

THE BRIMHALLS ENRICH UT MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Dennis and Linda Brimhall have made a lasting impact on the Utah Tech University Music Department through their generosity and commitment to student success. One of the Brimhalls’ most meaningful contributions has been their support of the annual Brimhall Cello Competition, part of the Cello Festival of Southern Utah. The event has attracted outstanding performers and students from across the country, raising the level of cello performance and instruction in the region.

“Since the Brimhalls’ involvement, we have brought many talented performers and students to campus,” said Dr. Ka-Wai Yu, Associate Professor of Music. “Some of these students have gone on to become national winners or finalists in competitions.”

Most recently, the Brimhalls donated a commissioned cello handcrafted by renowned luthier Paul Hart, along with a rare sevenstring bass viola da gamba. Together, these exceptional instruments, valued at more than $25,000, will provide Utah Tech students and faculty with access to world-class performance instruments.

Hart, a personal friend of the Brimhalls, has crafted more than 700 stringed instruments

throughout his distinguished career. Reflecting on his craft, he explains, “There’s a technique to building instruments: choosing the wood, using the tools. But there’s also an art: capturing the perfect sound.”

Before opening his own workshop, Hart worked for Peter Prier Violins and taught for several years at the Violin Making School of America. Utah Tech is exceptionally fortunate to provide its students with instruments of this remarkable quality, giving them the opportunity to learn and perform on handcrafted instruments created by one of the nation’s most accomplished violin makers. The instrument will remain at Utah Tech as the Paul Hart Cello, honoring Hart’s legacy while benefiting future generations of musicians.

“The Brimhalls’ donation has inspired generations of cellists,” Dr. Yu said. “The Paul Hart Cello has already been used by one of our students for her senior recital and by faculty and guest artists in performances. It has opened doors for students who otherwise would not have access to a professional-level instrument.”

Through their generosity, Dennis and Linda Brimhall are investing in the future of Utah Tech’s student-musicians .

UCCU SUPPORTS STUDENT SUCCESS

THROUGH A LANDMARK PARTNERSHIP

The new Utah Tech University UCCU (Utah Community Credit Union) branch is set to open this fall in the student housing district on campus and will provide students with convenient access to essential financial services. In addition to banking resources, the branch will feature a satellite bookstore as well as an ice cream and snack shop, creating a welcoming space where students can take a break while also managing their financial needs in a convenient on-campus location.

“This partnership is a commitment to the financial success of every Trailblazer and this entire community,” said Justin Olson, President and CEO of UCCU. “Our credit union was founded on a college campus, and our roots in higher education run deep. We’re thrilled and honored to join Utah Tech in building a bright future where education and financial strength go hand in hand.”

This transformative $7 million gift from UCCU will enhance student programs now and in the future, including the establishment of a financial literacy center housed in the College of Business. It will also help advance key capital projects, allowing these initiatives to gain meaningful momentum, and provide student scholarships.

We are deeply grateful to UCCU for their vision and partnership in supporting our students’ success and the university’s continued growth .

ON THE HORIZON

AT UTAH TECH UNIVERSITY

Looking ahead, Utah Tech University has begun fundraising for one of the most significant investments in its future—a new Student Union Building. More than a building, it will become the heart of campus and the future home of the Trailblazer experience.

Our new Student Union Building will become the heartbeat of campus, bringing students together to connect, lead, innovate, and belong. It will be the place where friendships begin, organizations thrive, traditions are created, and the university community comes to life.

This transformational project represents an investment in every student’s journey and in the future of Utah Tech. Together, we are creating a destination that will inspire generations of Trailblazers and shape the future of our university for decades to come .

SHAPING THE FUTURE SIDE BY

active learning. active life.

At Utah Tech University, innovative teaching and meaningful philanthropy have come together to create a lasting impact on student learning. Dr. Emma Prendergast, who serves as Director of the Humanities Center and Program Coordinator for Humanities and Philosophy, was able to create a lasting experience for her students thanks to the generosity from friends of Utah Tech.

Through a mini-grant from the “active learning. active life.” fund, Dr. Prendergast redesigned her Social Ethics course to include a hands-on philanthropy experience. Students in the class served as a grant-making board, researching nonprofit organizations, engaging in thoughtful deliberation, and collectively deciding how to allocate real funds to charitable causes. The experience gave students a rare opportunity to apply ethical theory in a practical, realworld setting.

“This was an utterly transformative and meaningful active learning experience for my students that could have never been possible without the grant award,” Dr. Prendergast shared. “It was the most fun teaching experience, too.”

Dr. Prendergast later presented her innovative approach to the Utah Tech University Foundation Board, where it made a strong impression on board members, including Susan Ertel, Associate Professor Emerita of English at UT. Inspired by the presentation, Susan and her husband Phil, who taught philosophy at UT for 20 years, decided to take action to ensure this program would continue for future students.

The result was the establishment of the Endowment for Intentional Generosity in Social Ethics, designed to permanently support and sustain this experiential learning opportunity for future students. Phil said, “The value of this particular course is that it provides hands-on experience in ethical thinking and also helps develop a sense of philanthropy in young people.” Susan commented, “Any way that we can guarantee that this kind of practical classroom experience can continue for multiple semesters is important to us.”

With help from Development Officer Janie Belliston, the Ertels were able to create this endowment with another

SIDE

donor who provided matching funds to meet the $25,000 requirement. Together, the two donors, with the second donor wishing to remain anonymous, made an impact.

For Dr. Prendergast, the establishment of the endowment was both unexpected and meaningful. “My class was so profoundly impacted by this experience that I cannot imagine not continuing the program,” she said. “I am grateful to the Ertels for seeing the vision and understanding the lasting impact this will have on my students and on future students who will benefit from this experience. The legacy they and the other donors have created will be enduring. I am overjoyed by their generosity.”

Through the collaboration of faculty innovation and donor generosity, Utah Tech continues to expand learning opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom, shaping not only students’ education, but also their understanding of civic engagement, ethics, and service .

INTERESTED IN CREATING AN ENDOWMENT?

ASK A DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

WHAT IS AN ENDOWMENT ?

An endowment is a special fund whereby the gift amount, or principal, is invested and a portion of the income earned on the principal is spent as directed by the endowment agreement. The gift amounts are held in perpetuity, or in other words forever.

WHAT IS THE AMOUNT NEEDED TO START AN ENDOWMENT?

An endowment at Utah Tech University can be established with a $25,000 minimum gift.

WHAT IS THE SPEND DISTRIBUTION ?

Each year, a portion of the earnings, currently 4% of the value of the endowment, is used to fund the award to the program or scholarship designated.

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF AN ENDOWMENT ?

Establishing a permanent endowment is a gift that keeps on giving. Endowment gifts expand the university’s permanent financial base and create a source of future income. It is a structured process that ensures your funds will be invested and provide permanent, sustained financial support.

BIG SKY EXCELLENCE

NEW ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Utah Tech University’s move to the Big Sky Conference is a defining milestone in the University’s history. More than a new athletic conference, it reflects Utah Tech’s continued growth as a nationally recognized Division I institution, expanding the visibility of our students, alumni, and Southern Utah on a larger stage.

As Utah Tech officially joined the conference, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ken Beazer reflected on the significance of the moment: “We are excited and proud to officially be members of the Big Sky Conference. As we begin our third decade of NCAA competition, it is gratifying to know that the hard work and sacrifices, and the successes we achieved over those first 20 years, has led us to this great day.”

The impact reaches far beyond athletics. Big Sky membership strengthens student recruitment, increases national exposure, enhances the student experience, and creates new opportunities for alumni engagement and philanthropic support. As Trailblazer student-athletes compete across the West, they proudly represent the innovation, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit that define Utah Tech.

Beazer noted, “The Big Sky is a conference that is known nationwide for its stability and athletic prowess. I believe Utah Tech University has a lot to offer the Big Sky as it continues to evolve into one of the premier conferences in the country.” That opportunity also comes with a commitment to continued investment. Success in the Big Sky Conference requires support for scholarships, academic resources, facilities, and championship-level experiences. With the generosity of donors and partners, Utah Tech is building a strong foundation for future generations of Trailblazers while advancing the university’s vision of excellence both on the field and in the classroom .

A WAVE OF SUPPORT FROM CINDY GILMORE

UTAH TECH WOMEN’S SWIM TEAM

Cindy Gilmore continues to make a meaningful impact on Utah Tech University through her dedication to women’s athletics and her generous support of the Women’s Swim Team. A familiar face around the pool, Gilmore is an active member of the Trailblazers Masters Swim Club and a loyal supporter at swim meets throughout the season.

Her commitment extends far beyond cheering from the stands. Over the past few years, Gilmore has generously supported the program and recently contributed $30,000 to the Cindy Gilmore Swimming Excellence Scholarship. This scholarship helps student-athletes cover housing costs and other essential university expenses, easing financial burdens and helping them focus on their academic and athletic success.

“I support young women athletes, especially swimmers, because women’s swimming is financially under supported,” said Gilmore. “I believe in the value of being on a competitive team and the lifelong lessons and friendships that can develop. I appreciate the dedication and sacrifice it takes to work toward a degree while competing athletically. I hope that my financial support helps ease that burden for Utah Tech’s women swimmers.”

Gilmore helps coordinate the Trailblazers Masters Swim club, which hosted its annual swim meet in March. The event raised $2,000 in support of the Utah Tech Women’s Swim Team and its continued growth and success.

Together, members of the Trailblazers Masters Swim Club remain committed to supporting Utah Tech’s women swimmers through both collective efforts and personal generosity, helping student-athletes thrive both in and out of the pool .

REFLECTING ON A REMARKABLE YEAR

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS

HALL OF FAME AWARD DINNER

In recognition of their significant contributions to Trailblazer Nation, Dr. Wayne Provost and Lindsay and Laura Atwood were inducted into Utah Tech University’s Hall of Fame in October.

Established in 1998, the University’s Hall of Fame honors members of the University community who have provided a significant gift to education through service or financial contribution and achieved distinction in a field of study, profession or through community involvement.

Lindsay, who was honored posthumously, and Laura Atwood have built a lasting legacy rooted in generosity, entrepreneurship and a deep commitment to education. After Lindsay’s passing in 2019, Laura continued their shared mission, notably supporting the College of Science, Engineering & Technology, including the Lindsay and Laura Atwood Genomics Lab. Their contributions also led to the creation of the Atwood Innovation Plaza, a hub for entrepreneurship and innovation.

Known as “Doc” throughout the University community, Provost has been involved with patents since the early 1970s, contributing to innovations like the insulin pump, portable dialysis machine, and re-sealable cereal box top. As founder and director of the Innovation Guidance and Solutions Center at Utah Tech University, Provost has helped more than 500 individuals navigate the intellectual property process, resulting in hundreds of patents, copyrights, and trademarks .

UT CLASSIC

DRIVING BIG SKY SUCCESS

Participants in this year’s Utah Tech Classic invested in a defining moment for Trailblazer Athletics. As Utah Tech prepares to compete in the nationally respected Big Sky Conference, proceeds from this event will help provide our student-athletes with the resources to compete at the highest level while proudly representing Southern Utah on a national stage.

This event was made possible through the generous support of our Title Sponsor, McMullin Injury Law; Gold Sponsor, SkyWest Airlines; and Silver Sponsors, Utah Community Credit Union, Dixie Power, Back Nine, Canyon View Credit Union, and the Rural Health Care Foundation. Alongside every golfer, volunteer, and sponsor, these partners are helping propel Trailblazer Athletics into an exciting new era of Division I competition and positioning our student-athletes for success on one of the nation’s premier stages .

FIRE & ICE SCHOLARSHIP GALA FRAME

THE FUTURE

The 22nd Annual Fire & Ice Scholarship Gala, held in March, was an unforgettable evening celebrating generosity, student success, and the power of community support.

This year’s event was guided by First Lady Angela Smeed, whose vision and direction helped shape the theme and experience of the gala. New momentum was also introduced by President Shane B. Smeed, who announced the addition of honorary co-chairs to further elevate engagement and support for the event.

Serving as co-chairs, Alma and Melissa Jeppson alongside Brandon and Becky Staples played a pivotal role in the event’s success. Their leadership helped the gala reach new heights, including raising the most funds in its history.

“The Fire & Ice Scholarship Gala is important to us because scholarships really do change what’s possible for students,” the Staples shared. “We were both scholarship recipients, and we saw firsthand how removing financial barriers can change the direction of a life - giving students the chance to work hard, grow, and reach their potential.”

The event raised more than $465,000 in support of the Marcia Wade & Dorothy Orton Pay It Forward scholarship and the Student Resource Center. Nearly 400 guests attended an art-themed evening featuring student performers showcasing a wide range of artistic and creative expression.

Special thanks to the many donors, community members, volunteers, staff, faculty, and students who made the evening possible .

“I am incredibly grateful to have received the Marcia Wade & Dorothy Orton Pay It Forward Scholarship. Attending the Fire & Ice Scholarship Gala as a scholarship recipient in the past was an inspiring experience and seeing so many people invest in students’ futures meant so much to me.

This year, I had the opportunity to attend the gala again because I worked for Strategic Finds that proudly supported the event as a Diamond Sponsor. It truly was a full-circle experience.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned in college was the importance of building connections and growing my network. Returning to the gala in this new role has a reminder of the lasting impact donors have on students.”
