STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP: PRINCIPLES IN ACTION Overview Over a long career, seasoned leaders have developed strategic confidence and learned many lessons by trial and error. What if you could accelerate your path to strategic leadership? What if you had the benefit of seasoned mentors and the insights of established research in this area? This program delivers just that. Strategic Leadership: Principles in Action “Tough Situations, Timeless Solutions” is a deep dive into some of the most difficult situations faced by leaders across industries and geographies. You will have the opportunity to engage with like-minded colleagues to grapple with strategic leadership challenges and make critical choices about how you will leverage your own strategic leadership skills to create value for your team and organization. A powerful three dimensional model will anchor our discussions on who you are (Core), what you do (Role), and why you lead (Goal). The main responsibility of leadership is to execute the mission at the highest level. This is especially important in industries with high stakes missions, such as health care. Both research and experience demonstrate that a positive and consistent approach to leadership based on enduring principles is most effective. You will learn what principlebased leadership looks like in application, focusing on 16 guiding principles such as leading with mission, truth telling, and consistency. The art of successfully engaging in difficult conversations and avoiding the most common mistakes that undermine them is also a major focus. The application of these principles across the three dimensions of strategic leadership will be illustrated by both research and real examples from Dr. Gorman’s extensive consulting and teaching career and from Professor Horton’s 32 years of experience as a health care executive. The class will be interactive with discussion and case analysis.

Faculty | Dr. Patricia Gorman Dr. Patricia (Trish) Gorman is Managing Director of the Goff Strategic Leadership Center at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah, where she also teaches strategy. She is an accomplished educator, author, and consultant who helps individuals and organizations build the skills needed to execute innovative growth strategies. Previous non-academic roles include Director of Growth Thought Leadership at Deloitte, North America and Director of Global Strategic Learning at McKinsey & Company.
Faculty | Joseph Horton MHA, FACHE Joseph Horton is a professor (lecturer) in the Department of Management at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah. His teaching focuses on principled and authentic leadership, and ethics, which he believes are essential to true success in any field. Previous roles include CEO of Primary Children’s Hospital and Chief Operating Officer of Intermountain Healthcare.
