‘Noises in the Blood’ was a project Lua made whilst she was a student on our course. The project helped her become a nominee of Magnum Photos in 2018. For this project Lua was inspired by contemporary Jamaican dancehall ritual. Made in collaboration with a group of British Jamaican women in Birmingham, Lua recreated scenes from dancehall culture at the participants’ homes. By embracing the impossibility of fully understanding this cultural expression so very different from her own, she playfully dissects the ideas of femininity and sexuality within the performances.
