COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER TONY AND JESSICA BASSO Tony Basso was born and raised in Price. His wife and partner, Jessica, was born in Simi Valley, California.

Jessica moved to Price with her mother when she was twelve years old. Tony graduated from Carbon High School in 1987 and College of Eastern Utah in 1989. Jessica graduated from Carbon High School in 1991 and attended CEU's Cosmetology program until she left to work with Tony in 1993.

Tony is a natural born entrepreneur. His formal business beginning was at age 16, when he started a limousine service. As a result of this experience, Tony not only gained valuable business experience, but more importantly through this business he met Jessica.

After graduation from high school, Tony went to work at Kraync Motors. After two years he decided to try his hand at real estate. This interest continues today under the name of AJB Holdings. He owned and operated Basso Specialty Merchandise on Main Street.

Tony was drawn back to car sales in 1993 when he and Jessica opened Mad Man Basso's. With humble beginnings across the street from their current location and five cars which they drove home each night, they built the successful business now known throughout the state. The Bassos have in recent years added a car rental service, RV sales, and more real estate holdings to their partnership.

Together they have set and reached each goal that they have written down. Their advice to CEU students is set goals, love what you do and do what you love.

Tony and Jessica have one daughter, Katrina who is a precocious six-year old at Castle Heights Elementary School.

HONORARYDEGREERECIPIENT MICHAELMILOVICH Michael Milovich was born in Price and raised in Helper. He graduated from Carbon High School in 1968.

Mike received his Bachelors of Finance from the University of Utah in 1972 and immediately went to work for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. Soon thereafter Mike was hired away by First Security Bank and moved to Spanish Fork.

Immediate success in developing new businesses led Mike to progressively increasing responsibilities with First Security in Salt Lake, Rock Springs and finally back home to Helper in 1976. Mike's continued success led to new offers that would have required him to transfer out of the area. Instead, he elected to accept an offer from First Interstate Bank in 1979, which allowed him to stay in the area.

Mike left banking to purchase and run Helper Food Town in 1981 and did so until he sold the store in 1992. He worked for Bookcliffs Sales from 1992 to 1995 when he was approached to take over the operations of Carbon Credit Union. At the time of his move to the credit union, it had assets of nineteen million dollars. Today it boasts assets of over forty-four million dollars.

Mike's career in public service began in 1978, when he was elected to the Helper City Council. He served on the city council until 1982. He then temporarily retired from public life until he was convinced to run for county commission in 1992, where he has served for the past eleven years.

Mike married Lianne Fossat also of Helper, July 29, 1972. They are the proud parents of three successful daughters: Anita Bruno of Price, Monica of Syracuse and Darla of Salt Lake City.

Mike ascribes to and continues to live by the motto of the Jaycees with whom he was involved when he lived in Rock Springs, Wyoming: service to humanity is the best work of life.

VALEDICTORIAN MELANIEKIM WOODRUFF Melanie was born on Misawa Air Force Base, Japan. She admits to earning her MRS. Degree in 1985 and after raising six children, ages 5 through 16, added full-time college student to her to-do list.

"Most people have hobbies," she said. "My hobby is school. I love the educational process. I think most everything is interesting and I thrive on intellectual pursuits."

Earning a perfect grade point average was not done all by herself, she admit. "One learns to juggle and everyone in the household pitches in to help. It can not be done alone. Everyone in my family has a job and we all respect each other's busy lifestyles."

She enjoyed taking classes with all ages of students and felt she came closest to ruining her perfect grade point average in her chemistry class. "That was a tough class," she quipped.

Woodruff was admitted to the CEU LPN's fall program and hopes to continue her education until she completes a master's degree in nursing.

SALUTATORIAN AMYR. WATKINS Amy was born in Stuttgart, Germany. She started her college education at Utah Valley State College. After earning her MRS. Degree in 1993, she put college on hold until returning.to school in 2001 at the CEU San Juan campus. With three children ages 8, 4, and 1, she transferred to the Price campus Winter Semester 2003 when her husband accepted employment in Price.

"CEU has been a wonderful experience for me. After not being in school for almost ten years, CEU proved to be extremely valuable for what some would call a nontraditional student. The class sizes were small, classes were challenging, and the instructors' focuses were on seeing their students succeed and pass. I have set high standards for my academic performance and CEU has allowed me to achieve these goals."

"The motto I followed since returning to college has been 'An obstacle is something you see when you take your eyes off the goal."

She plans to earn a bachelor's degree in accounting.
