MAYA SOLIS-STOKES & AUBREE RASMUSSEN

Throughout her time at Utah State University, she has been actively involved in A-Team, Student Events Committees, Panhellenic Council, serving as the Panhellenic President, and Alpha Chi Omega, where she currently serves as Vice President of Chapter Relations and Standards. She has also supported students as a member of the 2023 A-Team, Peer Mentor, and a Recruitment Counselor, helping other find their place on campus. Maya is passionate about creating meaningful communities, promoting involvement, and fostering a strong sense of belonging. She is honored to celebrate and recognize the incredible work of Aggies tonight.

Aubree Rasmussen is a sophomore at Utah State University, pursuing a degree in elementary and special education. She is passionate about getting involved across campus, from sporting events to service initiatives, and is always seeking new ways to build community. Aubree currently serves on the Student Events team, where she enjoys creating engaging experiences that bring students together. She is honored to host the Robins Awards and celebrate the outstanding nominees being recognized this evening.

THE ROBINS TRADITION

The Robins Awards are the most coveted of all Utah State University honors and the awards night is the year’s most prestigious event. This year marks the 77th year since William “Bill” E. Robins was student body president of Utah State University. It is in his name that we continue to celebrate this renowned tradition.

In 1954, Bill and his wife, Geraldine, traveled to a convention in Colorado. Shortly after taking off from the Denver airport, the plane crashed. Both Bill and Geraldine were tragically killed, leaving behind Nicholas, their one-year-ld son. Sigma Nu, the campus fraternity which Bill served as president of, created the Bill Robins Memorial Fund. The purpose of the fund was to raise money that would provide a scholarship for his son’s education when he was old enough to enroll at Utah State University. Seven years later, the tragedy of the Robins family was compounded when the small boy was stricken with leukemia.

The awards memorialize the name of the campus hero, Bill Robins. As the initial visionary of the Taggart Student Center, he demonstrated his strong leadership ability. Its existence today is due, in part, to his pioneering efforts. The name of Bill Robins has stood through the passing years as a symbol of the best youth has to offer. As a memorial to him, the Robins Awards continue as a tradition of Utah State University.

The featured award of the evening is the Bill E. Robins Memorial Award. Now in its 68th year, the Robins Awards Ceremony has grown to include several other awards for student achievements and excellence, and has become an honored tradition at Utah State University.

PROCESS OF SELECTION

The Graduate Student Teacher of the Year was voted on by a selection committee from the School of Graduate Studies. The Undergraduate, Master, and Doctoral Student Researchers of the Year were chosen by a selection committee from the Office of Research. The Scholar of the Year and Legacy of Utah State Award are limited to one person per college in each category. Finalists for the Female and Male Athlete of the Year were selected by the Athletics department. The Gerald R. Sherratt Award is selected by the Robins Awards Organizing Committee and recognizes a member or group of the University administration or staff who has shown unsurpassed dedication and service to students and often goes unrecognized for their contribution. The Talent of the Year finalists were chosen from the departments of Art & Design, Music, and Theatre Arts.

This year, more than 300 nominations were submitted for the Achievement of the Year, the Organization of the Year, the Val R. Christensen Service Award, and the Robins Family Memorial Awards. Those nominated were asked to submit a comprehensive biography by which a selection committee could evaluate their accomplishments and merits. This selection committee was comprised of faculty, staff, and alumni. Special congratulations are to be extended to each finalist tonight.

LEGACY OF UTAH STATE

award

In the fall of 2005, Utah State University mourned the death of eight students and one instructor who were killed in a rollover accident while returning from an agricultural trip near Tremonton.

Steven Bair, Dusty Fuhriman, Justin Gunnell, Jonathan Jorgensen, Justin Higgins, Curt Madsen, Ryan McEntire, Bradley Wilcox, Evan Parker, and survivors Robbie Peterson and Jared Nelson are all people that created a legacy. It was a great tragedy for the University and for the families involved, but the overriding message from the community was one of love, hope, and support.

The Legacy of Utah State Award was created in memory of those involved in the accident. The award is given each year to the student who embodies the true spirit, heart, and soul of Utah State and demonstrates love and support for the University family while leading with a vision of hope for the future. It recognizes a student who shows commitment to the institution and their program of study, as well as demonstrates internal involvement and service, department dedication, perseverance during times of adversity, and contribution behind the scenes.

To select the award recipient, each dean appoints a committee with representation from students, faculty, and administration. The committee nominates a deserving and committed student from each college.
