Assamese is one of the 22 scheduled languages of India. It is officially recognized in the state of Assam. In northeastern Indian states, the Assamese language acts as the lingua franca for the people of the region. It has 14.8 million native speakers that live in three Indian states. These states are Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland.
Assamese has been around since the 7th century BC. The earliest form of this language was derived from the Kamarupi dialect of the eastern Magadhi Prakrit.
