CEO’s message Keeping up with USPTA: It’s easy with websites, email and social media!

A

s USPTA CEO for the past 30 years, I’ve been involved in every imaginable aspect of this wonderful organization. From creating policies and procedures to attending meetings and representing USPTA around the world, I’ve been proud to have been a part of an era of unprecedented growth and change for the world’s oldest and largest group of tennis-teaching professionals. By virtue of various tasks over the years such as answering member questions and concerns, participating in sensitive negotiations with endorsees, advancing the computerization of USPTA, planning and implementing many programs and benefits, being involved in the purchase of our World Headquarters, helping to establish our USPTA Hall of Fame and much, much more, it’s been a great ride!

Our endorsees are also using webexclusive means to register members for special benefits. And, speaking of endorsement benefits, don’t forget to sign up for your HEAD contract, which is due Jan. 31, 2013. You can check out other endorsee benefits by visiting http://benefits.uspta.com/.

And, that’s not all. Today, social media will let you and me keep up with what’s happening with fellow Tim Heckler members and others across the city or around the world. We can communicate via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and LinkedIn. And, USPTA first started using computers to organize don’t forget to pin those great ideas on Pinterest! New features for your personal website

Y

ou may have noticed some new features popping up on your USPTA personal website. Now that the update is complete, we wanted to introduce them to you.

Document upload You can now upload several types of documents to your website and create links to them. This is ideal for brochures, fliers or registration forms. The acceptable formats are .PDF, .DOC, .DOCX, .XLSX, and .TXT. To upload a document, click on the Uploads link (formerly Upload pictures). After you have uploaded the document, you must click the “Publish changes” button at the bottom of the page. To create a link, go to the page from which you want to link the document. Type in the name of the document, such as Fall Tennis Brochure, highlight it and click the Hyperlink icon. Select your document from the Existing Document dropdown, check Opens New Browser, then Apply. Click Save, then Publish changes. You now have a link that will open a separate document. Links Until now, the links page on your website had a standard set of links provided by the website template. You can now add your own links to this page. A red Links item has been added to the menu, and this page works like all the other pages that you can edit. If you do not use this page, the default links will remain. YouTube A YouTube feature has been added to your edit page options. While you have always been able to embed a video by pasting the code into the code view, this new button makes it easier. To add a video from YouTube to your website, first copy the URL of the YouTube Web page. Then put the cursor on your page where you would like video to be placed. Click the YouTube button and paste the link into the YouTube link field. Click Insert and a gray www.ADDvantageUSPTA.com

box will appear on your page. Click Save, the Publish changes. (The video appears after you save the page.) Crop If you upload a picture that has too much empty space around the subject, you can now simply crop it with a new tool that has been added to the edit page options. After you have inserted an image on a page, select the image, then click the crop icon. A new box will appear containing the image with a red line around it. Click on a side and move the line to the desired location. Click Crop Picture and your image will be cropped. (The original image on the Uploads page will remain unchanged.) Header image This feature allows you to upload a header image that will be placed at the top of each page below the menus. (This is similar to Facebook’s cover photo, but not as tall, and we have reduced the height of the menu to accommodate the new header photo.) This header would be an ideal location for a landscape view of a club, tennis court or even group picture. The recommended image size is 800 x 150. If you upload an image that has different dimensions, it will automatically be resized to fit. (This may result in a distorted image if not proportionally correct.) Personalized certified member logo Don’t forget that you can now add a personalized certified-USPTA member logo to your website. There are two ways you can do this. First, log into Member documents and select Certified member logo. Go to the “Download your logo” section. Select medium or large for the size and JPG for the format. Click “Download this logo” and save to your computer. continued next page ADDvantage/December 2012

You can now add a personalized certifiedUSPTA member logo to your website. Log into your USPTA website and go to the About me, My facility or Upload pictures page. Select a field and click Browse. Select the logo and click Open, then Publish changes. If you upload this logo on the About me or My Facility pages, it will be placed in a specific location on the page. If you upload it in the Upload pictures page, you can insert it into any location. Please see the personal website instructions for help with this. The second option is to embed your logo. One advantage to this method is that it doesn’t use one of your image fields. To do this, log into Member documents and select Certified member logo. Go to the “Embed your logo” section. Select the size you want and select IFrame for the embed method. Copy the code on the left. Go to your USPTA website, log in and go to the page where you want your logo. Click Edit page and select the View source icon. In the source view, put your cursor where you want the logo. This will be easiest at the beginning or end of the page. Paste the code. Click the View source icon again to view the page. You can drag the logo around the page, however, you cannot wrap text with this option. (Use the upload image option to do that.) Click the save icon, which will close this window. Then click Publish changes.

2013 USPTA HEAD STAFF CONTRACT Dear USPTA Professional: What a year for HEAD Penn! It’s been a great 2012 as you’ll see below and we’re poised for an even better 2013. In fact, 2012 will be the best year in the history of HEAD Penn USA in sales and market share. Thank you for your support along the way and buckle up because in 2013 we have even more exciting plans. IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE USPTA HEAD STAFF CONTRACT! HEAD Penn Racquet Sports will continue to handle all contracts electronically. You can easily submit your contract via the website link: http://uspta.head.com. The site will be open on November 1. You can also log onto the USPTA.com website, go to Benefits, then the HEAD section for the link. HEAD is a brand with momentum! Andy Murray switched to the new YouTek™ IG Radical Pro this year and has had the best year of his career, winning the Olympic Gold Medal and the US Open Title! We also celebrated 25 years of the Prestige with all of our legends coming back to relive their greatest moments! The US Open Men’s semi-final had 3 HEAD players. Andy played with the Radical, Novak with the Speed and Thomas with the Instinct. Concluding with a 5 hour Radical vs. Speed final! Maria also completed her career Grand Slam by capturing the French Open Title playing with the Instinct! 2013 will bring a new HEAD technology. We will use a new material called Graphene which enabled us to create a completely new and patented way to redistribute weight from the middle of the racquet to the tip and the grip. This provides more power and maneuverability in a lighter racquet! Novak and Maria will be launching this new technology in the Speed and the Instinct. And since HEAD is the leader in Social Media fans, you know we will put some fun, cool virals out to drive consumers into your shops! We will also launch a completely new Power Series with 3 racquets that fit perfectly into HEAD segmentation: the Prestige PWR, the Speed PWR and the Instinct PWR! Why should only competitive players be able to use the best known racquets? All these products will also be available on your contracts. HEAD is excited about our launch of Sonic Pro EDGE string. The new pentagon shaped string creates increased spin, superior control and precise touch giving you the EDGE you need to devastate your opponent! We are also adding two new grips: HydroSorb Pro and HydroSorb Comfort. Based on the success of HydroSorb Tour, the Pro will give you more feel and if you are looking for more cushion, the Comfort will be perfect. We launched our Pro Penn Marathon tennis balls at the 2011 USPTA World Conference, and these premium balls have taken the pro specialty market by storm during the past year! USPTA pros around the country have noticed how much longer these Pro Penn Marathon balls are lasting in their teaching carts which, with the combination of our long-wearing high tenacity LongPlay felt and our Encore Technology, are helping stretch their facility budgets further than ever before. We are extremely proud to be the official ball of the USPTA for the past 39 years ... thank you for making Penn tennis balls the US market leader year after year! We’re proud to be partners with USPTA and take our relationship seriously. We truly appreciate you and your efforts to grow the HEAD Penn brands and the game of tennis every day when you step on the court. All the best, Greg Mason Amy Wishingrad Roger Petersman V. P. Troon Country Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., will host its third annual Special Olympics Tennis Fun Day on Jan. 12, 2013. This event has done much in the past and will continue to provide and offer fun to these special athletes as much as funds permit. Mark Pachtner, USPTA, has committed his time and resources since 1998 to support the Special Olympics and his goal is to raise $3,000. The free clinic for children, teenagers and adults with intellectual and, in some cases, physical challenges is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at Troon Country Club. They expect a total participation of approximately 110 people - 45 to 50 special athletes of all ages and help from 50 to 60 volunteers, teaching professionals and club members. During the Fun Day of clinics and exhibition play, the volunteer pros will hit with each other and play points with the participants. But the special athletes will not compete against each other since most have never played tennis before. Each athlete will receive a new tennis racquet and a gold medal for participation during the awards luncheon following the tennis clinics. A donation of $50 will sponsor one special athlete for this great event. There are two ways you can donate: via PayPal using the account mark_pachtner@yahoo.com or mail a check made out to Pachtner Tennis Academy with a notation “Special Olympics Tennis Fun Day 2013” to Troon Country Club, 25000 N Windy Walk Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85255. All donations will be reported by name directly to Special Olympics Arizona as a charitable contribution. For more information or to volunteer for the Special Olympics Tennis Fun Day, contact Mark Pachtner at the Troon Country Club, 480-358-7718, or mpachtner@trooncc.com.

Camaraderie and competition were the watchwords for the 25th rendition of tennis’ longest-running and most successful fantasy camp, “Tennis Fantasies with John Newcombe and the Legends.” This year’s camp was held Oct. 2126 at its longstanding location, the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels, Texas. As befits a silver anniversary, the event was rapidly sold out, with 100 campers in attendance – including 79 alumni. Founder and director Steve Contardi gathered the biggest cast in the event’s history. Thirteen legends were in attendance – all of whom have won Grand Slam titles or represented their nation in Davis Cup

play (often both). Legend captains were Hall of Famers Newcombe, Roy Emerson, Fred Stolle, Owen Davidson, Mal Anderson and Mark Woodforde, as well as such notables as Rick Leach, Brian Gottfried, Marty Riessen, Charlie Pasarell, Ross Case, Dick Stockton and rookie legend Murphy Jensen. The 2013 rendition of Tennis Fantasies takes place Oct. 20 - 25, 2013. Newcombe, Emerson, Davidson and Ross Case are also the headliners for a mixed doubles Tennis Fantasies event that will take place March 7 - 10, 2013. For more information, contact Steve Contardi at 1-800-8747788 or 513-489-9700 or stevec@towneproperties. com or visit www. tennisfantasies.net.

USPTA professional and director of tennis at Sport Fit Bowie in Bowie, Md., Kevin G. McClure, had his book “Tennis Directions” recently published in the Kindle store at http://www.amazon.com/. This book contains much of the instruction from “The Tennis Podcast” with Kevin G. McClure, the first audio tennis instructional series on iTunes. Later added to The Tennis Podcast was Inside Tennis with Kevin & Koz (Dave Kozlowski, USPTA) and Inside Junior Tennis (with Colette Lewis). A favorite part of these podcasts was the interviews with industry movers and shakers. Tennis Directions has tips in chapters headed as Mindset, Stroke Patterns, Play Patterns, Footwork Patterns, Mental Patterns and Fitness Tips. It is written concisely and in an easy-to-read style that was used for the audio series. Thanks to the following USPTA tennis pros who contributed one or more articles to the process: Ken DeHart, Tomaz Mencinger and David Smith. Due to the speed of the release, the website http://www.TennisDirections.com/, is not yet fully functional and everyone is being sent to Facebook at http://www.Facebook.com/TennisDirections. Kevin can be reached at sportfittennis@aol.com or Kevin@thetennispodcast.com.

Industry action Tired of throwing your old tennis nets in a landfill? How about giving them a second life as warehouse or cargo netting, or even debris covers for landscape contractors? That is exactly what Denver-based company, repurposedMATERIALS, does with the old nets. They have recently rescued several of old tennis nets from Gates Tennis Center in Denver and are ready and willing to take nets from anywhere in the world. repurposedMATERIALS founder, Damon Carson, met former USTA regional director Terry Walters at a sustainability conference. Carson asked his

usual question, “Got byproducts?” Tennis nets came up, and now Carson’s company is busy “repurposing” these retired nets. They are in need of more nets, so contact them next time you swap out your nets. What is “repurposing”? Repurposing IS creative reuse. It is NOT recycling that has gotten all the buzz since the 1970s. Remember, recycling requires huge amounts of energy to melt, grind, chip, or shred a waste stream into a useable raw material to manufacture something new. With “repurposing,” deal with byproducts and waste that get a second

HEAD racquet rebel Novak Djokovic ended the 2012 season with a 7-6(6), 7-5 win over Roger Federer at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. The Serb, who plays with a YouTek™ IG Speed MP, went down an early break, but took the victory in two hours and fifteen minutes. Djokovic achieved year-end world No. 1 status in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings for the second year in a row. This victory marks the second time that Djokovic has won the ATP World Tour Finals since winning in Shanghai in 2008. Djokovic, who also won the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year for his contributions through the Novak Djokovic Foundation, his role as a UNICEF ambassador and other charitable ventures, came back from 0-3 in the first set. As well as winning the Australian Open for a second consecutive season, Djokovic reached the final at six ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments this year, winning titles in Miami, Toronto and Shanghai. He came to the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals already with a 70-11 match record, the third time in four years he’s reached at least 70 victories, and moved to 75-11 at London. Federer had prevented a HEAD-to-HEAD final when he beat racquet rebel Andy Murray and his YouTek™ IG Radical Pro in the semi-finals. But Murray ended his season with confidence high after significant breakthroughs including the London Olympic gold medal and his first Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, Pakistan’s greatest tennis champion and highly regarded world humanitarian, announced today that his book “Stop war, start tennis: Lessons of life and understanding from a Pakistani tennis player” is now available for sale as an e-book electronically on Kindle at Amazon.com. The book details inspiring stories of the life and tennis career of Qureshi with the hopes of inspiring people to learn from both defeats and triumphs in sports or other endeavors. The book was co-written with Qureshi’s coach Robert Davis, also a contributor to such outlets as the ATP World Tour’s Deuce magazine, Tennis.com, Tennis Magazine Australia, the Bangkok Post, and the Jakarta Post among others. Shortly after his U.S. Open success, Qureshi founded his nonprofit foundation (www. StopWarStartTennis. org), created with the purpose of bringing hope through tennis to all those affected by war, sectarian conflict and landmines/ unexploded ordinance. Said Qureshi of his

foundation, “Whether it be wheelchair tennis projects in Sri Lanka and Cambodia or amputee centers in Iraq, to displaced peoples in Sierra Leone and Rwanda, I truly believe that our great sport of tennis can bring some joy and happiness into the lives of the young and old.” Qureshi is a two-time winner of the ATP World Tour’s Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the Year award (in 2002 with Hadad and 2010 with Bopanna) and in 2010 he was named a goodwill ambassador to the United Nations Development Program. In 2010, he was awarded the “Sitara-i-Imtiaz” (Star of Excellence) by the Government of Pakistan and also was given the Pakistan President’s Award for Performance in 2002, the Salam Pakistan Youth Award by the President of Pakistan in 2007 and, in 2003, he was a finalist for the Anne Frank Award For Moral Courage presented by the Anne Frank Trust.
