Warm-up for your lesson or match Warming up for a lesson or match is extremely important, not only for your performance, but also to help prevent injuries. Warming up your muscles allows the blood to flow to them and provides them with oxygen, which helps keep you going longer. A warm-up should be eight to 10 minutes or long enough to create a light sweat, enough to increase body temperature by I degree. Many injuries that occur on the court can be prevented if players are more fit and if they warm up and stretch prior to their activity.

The following is an easy warm-up routine to try that should make yo u feel less stiff, more limber and lighter on your feet.

Start with marching in place or a light jog around the court. Remember, easy does it when yo u start. Another drill that will get your heart pumping is called a four corner drill. Four corners is a series of movements that include a combination of high knees to the net, side steps along the net, a backward shuffle to the baseline and again side

step, facing the net. The next step is to slowly mimic the actual movements you will be using in your game. Go through all the shots by shadowing the movements in place. Repeat each shot three times. Continue on with the next shot before the player's heart rate returns to a resting rate.

The next part of the warm-up drill focuses on raising the heart rate and mimicking the movements of tennis , beginning with the forehand and backhand. We will add movement to this part of the drill. Slide sideways three steps, turn and shadow a forehand .

Slide back three steps to repeat this routine four more times. Repeat this drill again, but vary it so that you now are shadowing a backhand. Use the following shots: forehand, backhand, volleys, overheads and serves.

Once you have successfully completed this routine using different shots, you should have created a light sweat and be prepared for a tennis match or lesson. Create your own warm-ups and include movement drills that are similar

to those in tennis : split steps, back pedaling, sudden starts and stops , and keeping light on your feet. Also, go through all the shots of the game using just your racquet. Make sure that all your movements are controlled and that you are working within your own level.

In I976, John Naber captured four gold and one silver medal, and broke four world records in swimming. During his swimming career, he won 25 national Amateur Athletic Union tides and set a record by winning I 0 NCAA individual tides, while leading his team to four undefeated seasons. He was elected into the United States Olympic Committee Hall of Fame in I 984.

- Peter Drucker Tennis professionals in the '90s manage and work with people of different ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds.

To teach groups effectively, one must use management skills and personalize the impe~sonallearning and playing expenence.

Positive learning experiences don't just happen, they are planned and developed. If a pro doesn't plan, he plans to fail.

Most people who take lessons from a tennis pro want to learn how to play tennis, improve

their game, play league tennis or utilize their existing skills.

Most of them do not aspire to be the No. I player in the world. They have other professional goals.

They enjoy tennis because it offers physical, mental, social and emotional benefits.

Only about one-tenth of I percent of tennis players will have the motivation, ability, commitment and financial resources to become a truly great player. However, playing tennis on a social level brings a lifetime of pleasure and enduring friendships.

There are eight management keys for a tennis professional's success. When implemented, each of these keys will play a specific role in the dynamics of the tennis performance.

lanning. This is the most important mang ment key. Establishing long- and short-range goals and a strategy for how to achieve them within a reasonable time frame lays the groundwork for success. The tennis professional must plan how to select team members, schedule matches, check the team's equipment and apparel, and make travel arrangements.

After the matches , he reports the results and scores to the media. He also plans practice sessions and selection of doubles partners.

In addition, there are summer camps to conduct, league play to organize, private and group lessons to teach, a tennis shop to stock, court time to schedule and bookkeeping to do.

For this, a tennis pro must schedule her time wisely and answer the following questwns: What is going to be done where and when? What facilities and equipment will be n eeded? How many cases of tennis balls will be used? Do we need any umpires? If it rains, are indoor facilities available? What is the rain plan? What time will the matches begin when they resume?

are the "staff" being managed. Their performance on the court demonstrates the management and teaching skills of the tennis professional. The tennis pro must provide leadership and serve as a role model for her students. Before long, this form of management will develop an esprit de corp among the group.

irecting. It is helpful

to understapd the fferent leadership styles and how they operate within a tennis environment. It is also important for the leader to know her own leadership style.

The " Theory X" leader is the General Patton and McArthur way of accomplishing tasks, by leading and teaching. The underlying assumption about people is that "I' m OK, you are not OK. I've got the answers , yo u do it m y way."

In tennis, there are times this style is valuable: when ordering supplies, scheduling matches or selecting team members. It is effective whenever decisive action is needed.

The " Theory Y" style of leaders hip is indirect. This is an open-door policy-maker who welcomes ideas, listens and allows the p erson an opportunity to work things out.

The underlying assumption about people is, "I' m OK, yo u 're OK, let 's get together and solve the problem." Theo-

ry Y is useful when assisting a student with academic, personal or family problems or learning difficulties.

Leadership style Z is an eclectic way of management.

The leader is flexible and, depending upon the goals and needs of the player and the situation, uses a blend of X and Y styles. The eclectic blend is helpful in dealing with the individuals , parents and groups of students. This leader is flexible with each situation.

ordinating schedules between schools, as well as scheduling the municipal calendar with holidays and vacations, is an obvious skill.

Communicating effectively is a continual management challenge. There is always a need to communicate to different populations : players , umpires, citizens, news media, parents and club members.

ennis imagery is used by virtually all great players in their training and competitive play. Considerable research has shown that combining mental imagery with actual practice facilitates learning and improves performance better than practice alone.

Tennis imagery is one of the most powerful tools that players have to enhance the quality of their competitive preparation and performance. It enables them to develop and integrate all aspects of t heir game including technique, tactics and mental skills. Tennis imagery may be used prior to and during the tournament season and can p rovide mental, physical and technical benefits.

Coaches can make tennis imagery sessions a part of training and help the athletes to develop their own tennis imagery programs. These programs may be organized in team meetings du ring preseason training.

Set imagery goals Most players at all levels of tennis use imagery in some way, typically in the form of daydreaming about t heir p lay. Goals are what enable these random imagery exp eriences to become a val uable part of training. Tennis goals provide purpose and focus to the imagery.

Coaches can assist players in deciding what they want to focus on in their tennis imagery. For example, athletes may have a significant technical flaw that needs to be improved. T hey may want to improve their self-confidence or another mental area. Some component of overall performance may be the emphasis , such as being more consistent or aggresstve.

In setting these objectives, p layers should focus on performance rather than outcom e goals. That is, imagery

should address specific areas related to imp roving the quality of their play rather than on seeing themselves win. Simply put, if players imagine themselves playing well, they are more likely to do their best and winning is the probable result.

Climb a competitive imagery ladder Players must create a competition ladder of tournaments in which they will be competing in the upcoming season. The ladder should start with the least important tournaments , increase through more important tournaments and end with the most important tournament in which they will compete.

Tennis imagery is then begun at the lowest level of the competitive ladder.

Players should stay at t hat rung until they can reach their tennis imagery goal.

W h en that is achieved, they should stay at that step for several imagery sessions to reinforce positive images, thoughts and feelings . Players should then work their way up the ladder until they reach their tennis imagery goal.

Match-specific tennis imagery Playe rs should not imagine themselves playing on some court in some m atch at some tournament. R ather, they should choose a particular tournament and site, e.g., I 8s at Kalamazoo. Players can then select a different match for every tennis imagery session, t hus reaching their tennis imagery goals on different co urts and in varying events and conditions. One thing that must be emphasized to players is t hat tournaments , sites and conditions should be appropriate to their competitive levels.

What to imagine Since a tennis match can last several hours, it would not be realistic for play-

ers to imagine playing an entire match.

Rather, t hey should select four to five critical match situations and imagine themselves playing them. For example, key situations might include the opening game, closing out a set, being down a break and p laying a tiebreak. Coaches can help players choose the situations that are most appropriate for their game. For instance, a player might have a tendency to let down when ahead or tank when behind. Imagery focused on these situations wo uld enable the player to practice positive responses to t hem .

Enhancing tennis imagery quality Total reproduction. Imagery is more than just mental. It involves players seeing and feeling themselves playing their best. Good imagery should be a total reproduction of the actual tennis experience. It should include all of the thoughts , emotions and senses (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) that are experienced during an ac tual match.

Imag ine realistic conditions. It is important that players imagine themselves performing under realistic conditions.

That is, if playe rs are not seeded and will be playing on outside courts , they should imagine themselves playing und er these conditions. They should only imagine themselves playing under ideal conditions if they are usually seeded and play on the center courts. Players should always do imagery under those conditions in which they normally comp ete.

Imagine realistic performance. Players should focus on playing well rather than perfectly in their imagery. For example, junior players imagining themselves playing under tough conditions against a difficult opponent should not see themselves playing flawlessly like a pro.

playing within their ability and coping well with the difficulties.

Tennis imagery sessions Tennis imagery sessions should be done three to four times per week. It should not be done too often because, as with any type of training, players can get burned out on it. A quiet, comfortable area where they will not be disturbed should be set aside. Each session should last about IO minutes. Players may expect to see some results in six to eight weeks.

Tennis imagery journal ~.

One difficulty with tennis imagery is that, unlike physical or on-court training, the results are not tangible. An effective way to deal with this problem is for players to keep a tennis imagery journal.

'I)lese logs should record key aspects of every imagery session including the quality of the imagined performance, any thoughts and feelings that occur, problems that emerge, and what they need to work on for the next session.

Tennis imagery journals enable players to see progress in their imagery, thereby making it more rewarding.

Tennis imagery is a skill It is important to emphasize that tennis imagery is a skill that, like any other skill, will develop with ti me.

Coaches may find players who can' t seem to imagine themselves playing clearly or who make errors in their imagined performances. Both of these are natural and expected. But if players are patient and put time and effort into an organized tennis imagery program, they will become skilled at imagery in a short time and will gain the many benefits tennis imagery has to offer. ro,.

charge, grassroots tennis program filled courts from coast to coast with new players of all ages and abilities this spring. Thousands of children and adults took advantage of free lessons offered during the eighth annual Tennis Across America campaign.

Willard Scott invited more than I I million viewers of the "Today" show on NBC to take advantage of these free lessons.

He gave a USPTA "hot line" phone number for viewers to call to find a tennis clinic in their area. USPTA referred several hundred callers to local Tennis Across America sites immediately after the segment aired on May I 5, and calls flooded into the World Headquarters for weeks.

Nearly 2,000 teaching professionals hosted hundreds of instructional clinics for participants - including prospective students - who ranged from first-timers to advanced players.

In addition to these free public clinics throughout May, USPTA's Tennis Across America includes a series of multicultural clinics for groups who normally do not have the chance to play (including inner-city youth and wheelchair athletes) and followup lessons to keep players in the game.

The instructional clinics are held at public and private tennis facilities, park and recreatiOn centers, schools and other locations. The program depends not only on pros , but on help from

volunteers, donations from industry manufacturers and bigname support from honorary cochairs.

Serving as honorary co-chairs ofUSPTA's Tennis Across America this year were: pro tour stars Zina Garrison Jackson, Pam Shriver and Marianne Werdel-Witmeyer, along with Davis Cup coach Tom Gullikson, Tennis Week publisher Gene Scott and training expert Jack Groppel, Ph.D. Garrison Jackson led her own Tennis Across America clinic for youth at the Memorial Park Tennis Center in Houston. Students from the Zina Garrison All-Court Tennis Academy and new players from the public picked up tips from the veteran pro at the May 24 clinic. The academy is a nonprofit tennis program held at public parks throughout Houston.

Nearly I5 teaching pros in the USPTA Delaware District decided to take the courts to the kids with a "Tennis in the Streets" event in Wilmington on May 9.

North Market Street was cordoned off and portable nets were set up so that fifth- and sixth-graders from eight inner-city schools could experience several hours of free lessons with the pros. Wilson and Prince helped sponsor the event. Despite drizzling rain , 300 youngsters had the opportunity to pick up tennis racquets - some for the first time - and learn a few basics of the game. A disc jockey played music, and free hamburgers and hot dogs were served. Staff members from

This creative Tennis Across America event was timed to serve as a kick-off for the USTA's Summer Instructional Program. Mark Centrella, USPTA Delaware District president, said, "This grassroots effort successfully showed the kids that tennis can be fun. I think that we can expect to see some of these youngsters visiting courts this summer to 'get in the game.' " • In another cooperative effort, the Eddleman USTA Tennis Classic and USPTA co-sponsored the eighth charity clinic in conjunction with Tennis Across America at Brook Highland Racquet Club in Birmingham, Ala., on April I 6. John Sheffield, director for community development

of the USTA Southern Section, trained 25 volunteers to help I 50 men tally challenged athletes learn the volley and other basic skills. Glenn Roswal, professor of special education at Jacksonville State University, coordinated a skills competition for I2 Special Olympians. Other activities included a stroke demonstration by touring pros John Falbo and Mark McGuire, who autographed balls, hats and T-shirts. USPTA tennis professionals who took part in the event were Sheffield, Michael Kreider of Brook Highland Racquet Club and Charlie Badger of Chance Lake Country Club. USPTA provided loaner racquets, special tennis balls as prizes and banners. Shelby County schools held a follow-up event the next week.

• In Eddsboro, N.C., Mitch Adler held his fifth annual Tennis Across America clinic in conjunction with the Kemper Tennis Classic at Hermann Park in Houston. Onehundred fifty children from a local boys and girls club and multicultural programs attended.

USPTA pro Susan H. Minchau hosted two "special populations" clinics at the suburban high school where she coaches in Johnstown, Pa. More than 20 members of the Cambria County Association for the Blind and Handicapped, ranging in age from 20 to 62 , attended the clinics. balls, courtesy of Penn, to take home. Two college students who had played on Minchau's high school teams (one of whom was her son) helped make these two "fantastic Tuesdays" happen.

Fort Myers, Fla., was the site of a multicultural clinic co-hosted on April 30 by Cypress Lake Country C lub and Lee County Parks and Recreation for nearly 80 students from the Lee County Schools Exception Education program. "These mentally and physically challenged high school students squeal with delight as they make contact with the ball, something most of us -rake for granted," said Molly Beardsworth, director of tennis at Cypress Lake Country Club. "And the kids in wheelchairs never believed they could be playing a sport, but they are as eager to try as the others." Teaching the clinic were local USPTA pros: Beardsworth, Don Davis, Dolly Goldberg, Kiko Castillo, Fred Kangwa, Rich Snodgrass, Jeff Diggs, Diane Rich-

ards, Buffie Carter, Loretta Strickland, Bill Potoczny, Jeff Timmer and Gene Collins. Biola University in La Mirada, Calif , hosted a Tennis Across America clinic May I 7, with 3 2 participants.

Prizes were awarded for playing skills. The highlight of the day was a "hot shot" demonstration of between-the-legs lob retrieval by USPTA pro John Cartwright and Biola No. I men's player Jeff Culver.

Several adults got in line for Play Tennis America follow-up lessons.

• The Charleston Family YMCA in C harleston, WVa., hosted a multicultural clinic for the fourth year with a record 9 I children learning tennis basics and having fun. Local businesses provided the funds for Tshirts and prizes, including a tennis racquet, Nike fanny packs and sport water bottles. These were awarded for good behavior, best form, good sportsmanship, etc. Every child left with a Tennis Across America tennis ball, gold medal performance certificate and aT-shirt. Sixty-six men and women volunteered, and there were two USPTA professionals, Scott Zent, director of adult tennis at the YMCA, and Sean Murphy. Said Zent, "It was truly a community supported function. We are proud of Charleston's conununity spirit to help kids and support the great game of tennis." ibo

USPTA ADDS NUVEEN TOUR QUALIFIER TO NATIONAL SCHEDULE Nuveen Tour Greats Invite Doubles Players to join Them on "The Road to Naples" NAPLES, FLORIDA Ever wonder how you'd fare against McEnroe and Fleming? Your chance to find out begins at the Naples Open.

Tennis players who always wondered if they could compete with the Grand Slam stars of the Nuveen TourH will have a chance to find out with the establishment of a men's over-35 open doubles qualifying tournament. The US PTA has joined forces with the Nuveen Tour and Collier County, Florida, in expanding the Tour's grassroots efforts to offer this unique opportunity to earn a spot in the 1998 Nuveen Masters'H - the annual season-end championship for the popular men's over-35 circuit.

The Naples Open is set for October 30-November 2 in the Southwest Florida community that hosts the Nuveen Masters. Sanctioned by the USTA and endorsed by the ATP Tour, the event is partially funded by a grant from the Collier County Tourist Development Council, with the goal of generating economic impact in one of America's most tennisfriendly communities. The City of Naples has more tennis courts per capita than any city in the United States, and aside from great tennis, there is something for everyone in Naples. Along with great tennis competition, the weekend will include networking opportunities, a Welcome Reception, golf outings, a Beach Party, children's activities and more - the perfect family retreat.

This US PTA event will feature $25,000 in prize money. The competition is open to doubles teams from around the world. The winning team from the Naples Open will advance to the 1998 Nuveen Masters round robin doubles draw with $50,000 in prize money at stake and a chance to compete with some of the greatest names in tennis like Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Yannick Noah, Andres Gomez, Johan Kriek, John Lloyd, Guillermo Vilas and Peter Fleming. In addition to the competition, the winners will take part in all the Player activities during Nuveen Masters Tournament Week.

The program is being implemented by Net Assets, which manages and promotes the Nuveen TourH. Entry fee is $80 per team and special accommodations packages are available at Naples hotels. Entry information can be obtained by calling 941/435-1300.

Shopping for lemon balls

erring children to pick up balls can be a challenge.

Making a "pizza" on the face of the racquet often gets spilled while putting the pizza into t he oven , and "stuffing the turkey" (shirts) gets itchy. So we purchased four yellow and red children's play shopping carts at T..1rget to pick up our " lemon balls." The kids pick up balls in pairs. They love to see how fu ll they can get their baskets and t he balls get picked up in no time.

T he children in our program begin to complain about the heat, and parents have to drag them to the tennis courts for lessons they already paid up front. T hat is when our "squirt blasters" come in hand y. We use this as an other way to motivate ball pickup. We have only one rule: if yo u want to get sprayed, you ha ve to be picking up balls. If yo u' re like me and need a little more exercise than just feeding and hitting balls back, I suggest yo u chase the children as they pick t hem up. Whateve r water is left in the guns at the end of the lesson is used to soa k the pro !

Love golf, but tired of losing? US PTA's open golf toumament uses the Callaway system of handicapping, which gives all players an equal chance to win, regardless of skill level. The tournament is set at the beautiful Pok ta Pok course. It is open to all members, spouses and friends registered for the convention.

Scramble from the courts and make new friends on an afternoon filled with golf, sun, laughter, prizes and competition. Join other members at tl~e sixth annual golf scramble. Each team will have four players, one from each of the A, B, C and D levels (established according to handicap listed on entry form). Team members will be selected by computer to ensure that all teams are equal. The tournament is open to all members, spouses and friends regist ered for the convention. Debunking the myth of accurate humans' 1 vs. inaccurate computers'

hat would be better: a tennis rating system administered accurately by humans, or one administered inaccurately by computers? Sound like an easy question?

Clearly, accuracy is important so we want accurate tennis ratings given by humans. However, do these humans have accurate self-perceptions of their own relative abilities? If they don' t , how are they going to feel when other players have rated them with designations they disagree with?

Unfortunately, we often have inaccurate self-perceptions of our own ability levels due to various dynamics.

Here are some of the causes: The friends syndrome. This hap-

The fact of the matter is that computer--based ratings using playing results are many more times accurate than ratings developed from human perceptions of strokes and shots. The higher rated player has no desire to overwhelm her friend , and in fact wants to have an interesting game so she lets up and plays "friendly" tennis , allowing for a close match.

This often causes the weaker player to feel quite competitive at his friend 's level. It's reinforced when the better player tries to hide the "let up" and comments as to how the weaker friend is "really playing better." The weaker player even occasionally rationalizes , "I just don't play well against weaker players ," and wants to be given the higher rating for both status and (perceived) better games.

The "best performance illusion."

Tennis players don't have measurements and averages to help them gauge their performance as bowlers and golfers do. Consequently, tennis players frequently identify their playing level with their best remembered performance. They forget the other 9 5 percent of their matches. Golfers and bowlers are given ability level categorizations based on their average performance, and therefore know each time they participate whether they were below or above average. Some tennis players feel their playing level is at their optimum performance and therefore are upset when league or lesson administrators place them below that level.

The one-for-10 hit. Many tennis players wish to have the status of higher ratings . They are frustrated when told by local pros and administrators

• IV\ ltJ • USPTA Sedona Racquet Club in Sedona, Ariz. , where USPTA Master Professional Larry Lineberry is director of tennis , will host the $100,000 Sante Fe Development/ USTA Challengers of Sedona tennis tournament in October. The tournament will feature two $50,000 USTA Challenger tournaments , one for men and one for women.

Lineberry has directed 14 professional tennis tournaments with the USTA women's professional circuits since 1979. ·

Diane Selke, USPTAMaster Professional, is the new head tennis profesSelke sional at the Valley Country Club in Aurora, Colo. Selke is also the new head tennis coach for the boys' and girls' teams at Chaparral High School.

Bob Hammerlee, USPTA, was named the 1997 Patriot League Coach of the Year. Hammerlee received the award after leading Bucknell University's men's tennis team to a 14-8 record this past spring, and a fourth place finish at the Patriot League Championships. Bucknell is in Lewisburg, Penn.

Tom Maze, USPTA, has been named 1997 Dixie

Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Coach of the Year. Both his men's and women's teams at Methodist College in North Carolina won the DIAC Championships this past spring.

The men have won the conference title six times in the last seven years.

Dave Kozlowski, USPTA Master Professional and director of tennis at Laurel Oak Country Club, was a speaker at the 1997 Florida Division convention. He has also been busy on the professional tennis circuit this spring, interviewing Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, Pam Shriver, Tracy Austin and Chris Evert.

During the recent National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championships, USPTA Vice President Dave Porter received the Penn/ NAIA Coach of the Year award for his work as head women's tennis coach at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. Porter is also the head men's coach at BYU-Hawaii.

Cathy LaBruyere, USPTA, recently accepted the director of tennis position at Biltmore Forest Country Club in North Carolina. For the past six years , she has been the head professional at the Asheville Racquet Club and continues to teach in its junior development program.

Kevin Jackson of St. Pauls, N.C., was awarded the USPTA Southern Division PTM Scholarship Award at Methodist College. This $500 academic scholarship was established this year to recogni~ the PTM student exhibiting the greatest potential as a US PTA professional.

Jackson, who will be a junior this fall, has helped inner-city children via a scholarship camp, volunteered with tennis classes at an elementary school and assisted with local tournaments.

David Zeutas-Broer, USPTA, was one of 24 coaches selected nationally Zeutas-Broer to participate in a series of high performance coaching seminars sponsored by the USTA. These seminars are modeled after the U.S. Olympic Committee's high performance workshops for Olympic team coaches. Manufacturers Penn Racquet Sports renewed its sponsorship of USTA League Tennis programs. Under the agreement, Penn will serve as the official ball for all area, sectional and national championships.

Penn is also the official ball for the 1997-98 Nuveen Tour. This men's over- 3 5 Champions Tour is a year-round event.

Over 3 ,000 senior players from around the world gathered in Palm Springs, Cali£, in April for the Phoenix Challenge/ Love 50 Tennis Tournament.
