Let's celebrate doubles in '96

The Voice of the Tennis Teaching Profession

e know '96 is the "year of the games" - Olympic that is. Atlanta will be a showcase for competitive sports at their best. And what better city is there than Atlanta to celebrate tennis participation ad infinitum? This is the land of ALTA (Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association) — of recreational tennis play with the greatest league participation in the United States.

And the vehicle used most for involvement of the masses is good old doubles. That's right. This is no shock to all of you in tennis.

Doubles is our best format. Our ADDvantage cover this issue is a tribute to this great game.

With all the action and initiatives out there to get participants into the game, doubles is and has been our best formula for player retention.

Doubles is a teaching professional's dream, isn't it? It's the foundation of our adult programming — with league play and spin-off coaching clinics necessary to join teams or to develop skills for recreational noncompetitive play. So many varieties on the theme: we can play with all the variables — age, ability, equipment, scoring . . . mixed gender dubs, same gender, age groups, mixed ages, same skill levels, mixed skills, handicapping — Tencap system. It's our means of delivering fun and fitness to tight-knit groups or complete strangers. It gives people a blend of socialization, exercise, challenge and enjoyment.

Teaching opportunities abound in doubles, don't they? Doubles strategy and tactics, special shots, movement skills, dubs formations, dubs communication — you name it. We can teach a zillion different doubles components 'til the end of time.

So, why this highlight? Aren't we doing it already? My purpose in celebrating doubles in '96 is to direct our attention to an obvious winning pre-

sentation of our sport. So simple, it's easy to stray from it. Gene Scott, publisher of Tennis Week magazine, challenged me with his thoughts that there is a tremendous amount that can still be done to promote doubles. Gene is a passionate believer in doubles.

At first, I admit I was a bit incredulous at Gene's contention that those of us in the teaching industry don't teach doubles enough.

But as I pondered his challenge, I realized that self-inspection of our industry and our own situation is healthy. If he could find 50 clubs that don't teach doubles at all, there is a problem. Maybe we do teach a lot of doubles, but couldn't we do more? After all, isn't this the crux of all our "extra effort" industry cooperation?

Do any of us focus enough on doubles with our junior students? If Woods not, let's zero in on this budding, impressionable market. Give them the tools for their future. Get them hooked on doubles for life. Kids respond well to partner and peer-related activities. We know team sports are the most fun. A few USTA sections are starting to focus on "doubles-only" junior events.

This is a good sign. We are doing a great service to any player's development — especially kids — when we insist on mastery of doubles skills: creating angles, infusing changes of speed and spin, lobbing, smashing and volleying, all necessary for accomplished doubles play.

Wouldn't it be nice, too, if the professional players got on the doubles bandwagon? Luke Jensen has said that he would like to see required doubles participation for all new ATP members.

We know the influence our former champions have had on doubles and its popularity; perhaps the artful elegance inherent in their singles shotmaking was due in part to their respect for, and participation in, doubles. You know who I'm thinking about . . . Smith-Lutz, Emerson-Stolle, Newcombe-Roche, McEnroe-Fleming, Navratilova-Shnver, Laver-Rosewell, King-Casals.

uestion: I have a 49-year-old former highlevel player who has recently developed slight muscle strains (or magnified soreness) in his arms and legs. Can you offer any insight into the problem as well as whether to use cold or heat applications?

you should rec^^^ommend that your student get a complete physical examination to determine if anything is wrong medically. Barring no medical problems, I would recommend a thorough nutritional analysis by a certified and knowledgeable nutritionist. Often, such afflictions can be traced to problems with nutritional intake such as poor hydration or lack of vitamins or minerals.

If both of these areas — the physical exam and the nutritional profile — show no problems, I suggest that your stu-

dent begin a formal strengthtraining and flexibility program.

Tennis is a tremendous fitness activity for the "average" player. But if your 49-year-old pupil wants to continue playing at a high level, simply hitting tennis balls will not be enough to physically prepare his body for competition.

If tournament tennis is a goal for any player, I recommend strength and flexibility training to not only protect the body from injury, but also to enable the athlete to play at a higher level.

Scientists have theorized over the years that with every decade of life beyond age 25 or 30, human beings lose 10 percent of muscle (and mental) capacity.

However, this is only true if you stop training physically and mentally. It is

your 49-year-old student has lost a little strength in his arms and legs, but he continues to push himself on the court.

With weaker muscles, protection from the shock of competitive tennis is difficult for the body to handle.

That's why strains are more common in older people.

It will take about six to eight weeks of training before your player will see the marked benefits of the strength and flexibility exercises. In the meantime, what should the athlete do to accommodate the pain after playing and the preparation before playing?

Athletic trainers and physical thera-

pists still espouse the use of cold applications for 20 minutes after playing and practice to ease pain and control swelling.

Heat applications are seldom ever used and, when they are offered, it is only in the preparation for physical effort and to assist in the warm-up. ^

Attendance (all ages) Make attendance fun by giving each child an attendance card with room to place a _ sticker for each day they are present. At the completion of the session, the children get to take the card home. It gives them something to show their friends or display on the refrigerator.

How to keep score

As the coach tosses or drops the ball, have the student say "bounce, swing" to assist with timing. The first time through the line, each child gets one swing, then two swings the following turn, then three, and so on.

If the children are small, have them use two hands for the forehand and backhand.

Wall tag (ages 4-5) One child at a time faces the wall and tries to catch a ball that is tossed against the wall by the coach. The student tries to catch the bouncing ball before it begins to roll. After catching the ball, the child places it on his racquet on the opposite side of the court and returns to the line.

(ages 3-5) A good way to teach the tennis scoring system is to have children repeat after the professional, "Love is zero, first point is 15, second point is 30, third point is 40 and the fourth point you win the game." Repeat the score before the conclusion of each lesson.

Another way we learn to keep score is to use the attendance cards. On the back of the cards write love, 15, 30, 40 and game. Give each child two pennies. The penny with the head is the server and the tails penny is the receiver. Describe or play a point. If the server wins, the children move the "head" penny to the I 5 and leave the other on love. Have them always announce the "head" penny score first, and announce it before the next point is played. Continue until the game is completed.

Special note: When teaching young children, remind them that learning to keep score is "tennis talk" so they won't confuse it with the regular way to count in school.

Stroke development (ages 4-5) Children hit groundstrokes one at a time as the coach either tosses or drops the ball. We use several teaching aids to assist in teaching correct form. Students use mr. peeWeeâ&#x201E;˘ racquets and foam balls.

To direct the low-to-high swing pattern, have the child begin by resting the racquet on the basket part of a ball hopper in the backswing position. Use the handle of a

The child shuffles to the center service line and hits a second groundstroke from a stationary ball device. After hitting the stationary ball, the child shuffles to a third hitting station along the service line. At this station, the child hits a ball from a pop-up ball machine, like the Tennis Twist machine. Wilson Teach Feet or poly spots are useful in indicating the path the children should take and footwork at each hitting station.

The rotations of hitting three balls at different stations and returning to the end of the line can easily accommodate six youngsters.

What's the point of it all?

ennis players, coaches, professionals and anlouncers often talk about how a match linged on just a few key points. Do you know the percentage of points you win and lose when you play a match?

In the 1995 French Open, Michael Chang won an excruciating semifinal match against Sergi Brugera, Chang was perfect in terms of sets won, winning all three of the sets played. His percentage slipped drastically, though, as he only won 55.56 percent of the games played (20 out of 36). In terms of points won, Chang captured only 51.36 percent of the points played (113 out of 220). If Chang had won three fewer points, he and Brugera would have won the same number.

As illustrated in this example, the probability of winning a point, game, set and match are substantially different. A player with a 25 Tencap has a better chance of winning a single point from Steffi Graf or Pete Sampras than they do of winning a match against them.

A better understanding of the value of one point can be gained by more closely examining Markovian chains as they apply to the tennis scoring system. My introduction to Markovian chains came from fellow USPTA professional Alex Dorato in the early 1980s. He and his father applied the studies of fellow mathematicians on the theory of Markovian chains to the probability of winning a tennis match.

Most tennis players have never heard of Markovian chains and fewer would understand their derivation. The good news is that they won't have to calculate their derivation as a means of better understanding how to cope with

losing on the court. All they need to know is that the theory determines probabilities of winning an event based on the method of scoring.

By looking at the table below, we can begin to see how just a couple of points can impact the outcome of a match. As might be expected, if a player wins 50 percent of the points, he will win 50 percent of the games, 50 percent of the sets and 50 percent of the matches (column I).

A player who can win 55 percent of the points increases the probability of winning a game to 62.3 percent. The probability of winning a set becomes 81.5 percent and the probability of winning the match is 91 percent. The unique scoring system used in tennis allows a player to win slightly more than half the points, but win the match by a decisive score.

By reviewing the possible scenarios from this table, it is easy to see that every point can theoretically have a significant impact on the match.

When players are closely matched, or have Tencaps within 7 points of each other, the winning player will often win less than 55 percent of the points played. This was particularly evident in the previously mentioned Chang match.

An understanding of this is important to tennis professionals in helping their students establish productive practice sessions, develop their mental games, improve their techniques and strategy implementation and improve the tracking of goals and match play. By developing a discipline in which you focus on each point, it will suddenly become very easy to pick up several points a set â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and these points can be quite important. ^

How to increase profits teaching Play Tennis America

A

s tennis-teaching professionals, we need to "grow the game" for the overall health of the sport and the industry. This noble deed of "giving back to the game" is good, but as a professional business person, I am looking to make money in exchange for my teaching time. For the past two years, I have been doing just that â&#x20AC;&#x201D; introducing tennis to adults, juniors and children, and at the same time increasing my income, creating new students and industry consumers, and attracting new players to become members of our club.

Armed with an effective grassroots marketing campaign and an enthusiastic and fun lesson plan (modeled after Play Tennis America), and coupled with an entrenched local league retention program, I have been extremely successful.

To give you an idea, since March 1994, I have personally taught some $50,000 worth of PTA lessons. These are groups numbering between eight and 12

children (4- to 7-yearolds), juniors (8- to 15-year-olds) and adults (16 years and older), totaling more than 800 new players.

Of these, some 500 are playing local league team tennis (either Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association or USTA) and more than 50 adults have joined our club. I assume many if not all, are buying balls, shoes and attire, as well as upgrading their beginner racquets. We must be doing something right, but just what is it?

Marketing campaign I call it "bait, hook and catch." The "bait," or initial call to the non-playing public, is "Free tennis lessons for beginning adults and juniors!

We get asked this question about our free beginner lesson program all the time.

We simply tell respondents that they get two free one-hour group lessons followed by six more group lessons for $48 (this works out to $6 per lesson). Included in this package is a complimentary racquet and T-shirt. It is such

a good deal that they (adults, juniors and children alike) simply cannot refuse.

We buy the TIA's Play Tennis America generic racquets for $10.50 each and Wilson's Jr. Rak Attak for $9-50 each. A Countryside Tennis Center logo T-shirt costs us $5 apiece.

You watched the former head professional operate for many years and wondered why there were not as many young people or people of diverse backgrounds in the club as you thought there could be.

Now, as the head professional in this culturally diverse community, you want to increase business. Your first thought is to start a junior program and later, several leagues.

However, after mailing fliers and making telephone calls, you've still made no inroads with your neighbors. The prognosticators are telling you that by the year 2010, the United States will almost double its minority population. You can see the potential. Develop-

ing a strategy that will give you access to this community can grow your business and make you a star.

You know the residents and some of the children because you see them playing tennis (or trying to play) in the park. What are you, the tennis pro, supposed to do?

Begin by educating yourself on the cultures of your target audience. Watch the behaviors, interaction and mannerisms. Listen carefully to how things are said, how they are received and the responses. Become a student of human behavior, using the same skills you use to teach. The trick is to get to know someone in each group. It is always easier to get to know youngsters since they have fewer inhibitions. They are still developing and learning, and have not formed prejudices and opinions about many things, and are therefore more open to new people and ideas. Get the children involved and you will get the adults since many parents tend to follow the lead of their children.

Children can also offer avenues of introduction and insights into

parents that would be impossible for you to get on your own. Children tend to make comments like, "My lather doesn't like this or that." They can tell you what sports the f a m i l y enjoys most and why your ll<er went into the trash and what comments went w i t h it. They can also be your greatest allies m other ways. ;â&#x20AC;˘ W; Children tend to be highly competitive.

Once one child tries something and likes it, the resulting peer pressure will then make others want to try. Be prepared to make it fun for the youngsters by offering tennis scrambles and prizes for involvement. Solicit local merchants for sodas and food. Arrange with the local school's athletic director to give one free clinic per week or month at your club. Youngsters love field trips and no child should be too old or young for your program. Make sure you have enough racquets for each participant. It isn't necessary to start off with a tennis program, but include some activity that involves the use of a tennis racquet, ball and the net. Re-

Make the first impression a powerful one.

Before starting your promotional campaign do some homework. There is some basic information you must have before beginning your pilgrimage. Ask yourself these questions and be very honest when answering.

I . Do I recognize my biases?

Since we all have biases, you must be able to look at yourself and determine if you have ever made derogatory or inflammatory comments about anyone based solely on their race, gender, sex or national origin. Remember the words you utter are less important than the perception left in people's minds. Be aware of the devastating effect any perceived contradiction between your words and actions (body language) can have on your efforts.

Do I know my target audience?

Have you taken the time to learn about your target group?

diversity and awareness Does it seem inclined to any athletic activity, specifically tennis?

Does it watch tennis at home? Does it know any of the touring pros? Who are the group's favorites? In what sporting events do the children take part?

J. Do I know how my target cultural group acts and reacts in certain circumstances, primarily those that will be conducive to its learning?

Have you taken the time to visit its churches, places of entertainment, social clubs and Boy and Girl Scout groups? Have you watched parents when the students are performing in a play or athletic event? How do you interpret their actions and reactions? . Have I prepared myself well enough so that I am not perceived as meddling or threatening?

Have you created a foundation of trust and interaction with other community members who work closely with the youngsters and their parents, so that when you are introduced, you will be able to

"piggyback" off their reputation and use that introduction as sponsorship?

3. Have I prepared well enough to be perceived as a person without bias and with the ability to add value to the community?

Have you established enough of a foundation in the community so that people will say you are fair, trustworthy, helpful, honest and above reproach? Have you been careful to avoid taking sides in divisive issues? Have you always taken the high road in your dealings?

What would the community residents say about you if asked about your integrity?

What have you done to enhance the stature of your community?

What value to the community has your presence brought?

6. Have I been observant enough to learn what is perceived to be offensive?

Have you spent enough time with the youngsters to determine what offends them and/or their parents? In your discussions with parents, what did you learn?

/. Have I used active listening skills and incorporated what I have learned into my approach?

Have you listened well enough to determine likes and dislikes? Have you built your approach around how to meet the needs, likes and desires of your target group?

8. Do I know that certain acts, deeds, words and phrases can be considered offensive?

We have been conditioned in our culture to firmly shake a person s hand and look him in the eye. Certain cultures do not believe in a firm handshake until you have become a close friend, nor will they look you directly in the eye. Just because a person does not look you in the eye or seems evasive on introduction, does not mean the person cannot be trusted and will not be an active participant in your program.

9. Am I aware that people, even from the same race and ethnic background, see issues differently?

Regardless of ethnic background, the first thing that you must

understand is that each person is different.

People from my hometown and I feel differently on a number of issues and that difference is based primarily on my experiences, my exposure, my belief system and my ethical positioning. The key here is to be aware that all people are different and must be treated accordingly

Comments such as, "They're all on welfare", "They're all lazy" and "They all carry knives," will destroy any progress you have made in your community relative to building your business. These statements, though not intended to be malicious, cut very deeply.

Instead of arguing about it, why don't we try using really slow balls in a couple of pro tournaments on the fastest surfaces and conduct a poll to see if most people think the slower balls make the game more fun to play and watch on these surfaces.

Your argument makes it seem so unreasonable to say that the game is fine as it is. You seem to imply that the only people who argue this point are opposed to any form of change, •• But, as do most arguments, yours contains a dual-edged blade. Mind if I hold that blade for a minute? Thanks. / . ' V . - : > . ' The game of tennis, at the pro level, has changed drastically over the past 15 years. Almost every player quoted by you had : something bad to say about this change.

It seems, therefore, that they are the ones who are opposed to the change that has taken place in the pro game, and who wish to impose some sort of revisionistic "solution" on the "problem" that this change has "produced" in the game.

People play differently than they used to, and sometimes a : given game from this era isn't as great as a given game from another era. Not every match is a masterpiece, regardless of the era. I've seen some matches in the past couple of years that I believe are destined to be classics — Becker's defeat of Agassi at the 1 995 Wimbledon, for example, : v Tennis, due to changes in technology and the sheer condi- ; tioning of the players, is a different game than it used to be.

Why don't we let the game work itself out, instead of destabilizing things even more by adding new variables into the mix? I have a well-justified perspective that people, when intending to do well, often do ill. They makeThings worse when trying to make them better,-Often, the best thing to do is nothing, and let things work out as they will. I;A. said: : •

Changes to the Davis Cup I have always felt that the format of the Davis Cup is crazy. I : am from Rochester, N.Y., where the Ryder Cup was just held, and itwas a great sporting event that brought about interne- '•••%• tional competition. The best part was that it only took three days to complete. TencapÂŽ handicapping energizes recreational tennis

ecreational tennis is reaching a new level of excitement with Tencap , a USPTA-endorsed computerized handicapping and rating system that is catching on at public and private tennis facilities and recreation centers around the country.

Tencap provides a way for players of different abilities to equalize play through "free" points allowed during each set. The handicapping system uses "Tencap" ratings that are based directly on a player's match results. This objective Tencap rating changes to reflect the player's skill level as compared to others.

An estimated 30,000 players at more than 100 of the nation's top facilities

are using the system.

Some of those include the Bonita Bay Club in Bonita Springs, Fla., Quail Creek Country Club in Naples, Fla., Inverness Athletic Club in Englewood, Colo., Pinehurst Country Club in Denver, Park City (Utah) Racquet Club, Tiburon (Calif) Peninsula Club, Antioch (Calif) Delta Tennis Club, Dellwood (Minn.) Country Club, Minikahda Country Club in Minneapolis, Dunwoody (Ga.) Country Club, Atlanta Athletic Club, Richland Country Club in Nashville, Tenn., and the Arizona Biltmore Racquet Club in Phoenix.

Recreational matches, league play and tournament matches each receive different weights in the Tencap rating formula, ensuring an accurate assessment of a player's ability. Also, a player's Tencap can be determined from regular match scores or from handicapped play.

The Tencap handicap is the difference between two opponents' Tencap ratings.

The player with a higher numerical rating may at any time during a set award him- or herself the next point to be played up to the number by which the players' ratings differ. For example, if a 30-rated player competes against a 35, the 35 may take five "free"

Set scores from regular or handicapped match play are recorded at facilities using the system, and forwarded to Tencap's national office near Minneapolis. Tencap ratings are then updated and sent back to participating facilities.

Nearly 275 members of the Tiburon (Calif) Peninsula Club are using Tencap in competitive adult leagues and special events, according to Brent Abel, the club's director of tennis.

Abel also plans to use Tencap in upcoming programs such as his men's doubles outings. Twenty-four players used the system in a recent "Turkey Team Tennis" holiday event.

"Tencap helped solve the problems with our city-wide junior league," said JeffCobb, USPTA, an assistant professional at the Richland Country Club in Nashville, Tenn. Nearly 80 children played each Saturday during the fall league, using Tencap.

"It was great because it helped equalize play.

Tencap can be used in both singles and doubles play, and in club activities such as mixers, round robins and other on-court events. "Teaching professionals are using Tencap to add spice to their tennis programs, whether at private clubs or public recreation centers," he added.

"For years, golf has had a great handicapping system that encouraged play. Now tennis players have the same opportunity through Tencap," Heckler said.

USPTA is promoting Tencap at events in its 17 U.S. divisions, and plans to expand the system throughout

the entire country this year.

"We've found that the demand for Tencap from players, teaching pros and club owners is high," said Peter Hitch, president "of Ten Cap Inc. in Minnetonka, Minn.

"It's exciting to see the system in place at some of the country's top tennis facilities.

Sampras, Agassi to compete in 1996 Super Showdown

he top two men tennis players will battle it out again Saturday, Feb. 3 in Atlanta. Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi are participating in the 1996 Super Showdown, held in conjunction with The Super Show/96. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Tennis Industry Association's initiative to "grow the game.

Agassi and Sampras met five times in 1995. Agassi holds a 3-2 edge but they split

the two Grand Slam tournaments. Sampras holds one Australian Open title ('94), three Wimbledon titles ('93, '94, '95) and three U.S. Open titles ('90, '93, '95). He most recently led the United States to a victory over Russia after succumbing to leg cramps in a singles match. He and partner Todd Martin enjoyed a 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 win. Sampras is coached by USPTA member and former pro Tim Gulhkson.

Team Southern defeated Florida with a final score of 42-39 at the second annual Southern Tennis Association/Florida Tennis Association Challenge. The Challenge brought the top-ranked junior players from both sections together in a friendly, but competitive, match.

The Southern Tennis Association has renewed its agreements with three of its top sponsors. BMW of North America Inc. will return as the title sponsor of the BMW/ STA Mixed Doubles League for 1996. Prince will provide the official racquet and shoes and Penn Racquet Sports will supply the official ball for the league. Penn is also the official ball of the STA/Reebok Junior Super Circuit and the national USTA League Tennis Program.

Associations A report from the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association found that the average revenue for IHRSA clubs increased by 6.7 percent from $1,427,000 in 1993 to $1,522,000 in 1994The growth was fueled primarily by an 8 percent increase in membership growth. Seventy-six percent of the clubs discounted the enrollment fee in 1994, but the majority rarely or never discount membership dues.
