Make the game fun for players Gordon Collins, President

E r most players, the primary reason for playing tennis is to have fun . Tennis certainly has many other benefits associated with it, but having fun usually is right at the top of the list. One of our most important roles is to 'set the stage' for the proper environment.

To maximize the experience our customers receive at our clubs or schools, I suggest that you keep the following points in mind .

A player 's experience usually is dictated by her first impressions. People come to our facil ities with predetermined expectations. If these expectations are met or exceeded , we have set the foundation for a successful outing. There are several key factors to consider.

• Is the club aesthetically pleasing upon arrival?

• Are the parking lots and grounds wellmaintained?

• Are the tennis courts, windscreens, nets and walkways in top shape?

• Did the first employee that the guest encountered greet her by name and with a smile?

If these impressions were positive, you have set yourself up for success.

Be innovative in your programming t

It is important to keep fresh ideas in mind for your programming . An excellent way to

find new ideas is to hold brainstorming sessions with the staff It is important to remember that all ideas are good ideas.

By creating a positive

By attending USPTA conventions and seminars, professionals have the opportunity to communicate with others in their field and learn about different programming ideas.

Professionals attending the USPTA National Convention for the first time will be surprised by the creativity and generosity of other members.

Also, ask club members or clients what they would like to see or do. They often know best what they need, and might offer new ways to learn.

Surround yourself with positive attitudes Smiling is the best way to keep a positive attitude. If a club member has a bad day at the office, but goes to his club and sees a place full of smiling staff members, it will help raise his spirits.

A head professional or club manager should remind all staff members that their attitudes influence the members' attitudes.

Creatively design posters and information sheets When designing posters and fliers, it is important to be creative, without going overboard. Even those with natural creative talent should seek the advice of a professional graphic designer. Clubs with smaller budgets can get good ideas by studying the format of other good fliers or posters.

It is important to keep bulletin boards fresh and up-to-date. Replace old posters immediately.

Professionals have the ability and responsibility to make a club an enjoyable place for members and potential members. With all the talk of a declining industry, it is more important than ever to promote tennis. By creating a positive environment and increasing club membership, club professionals can do their part in growing the game for the entire industry. o ADDvantage July 1994

Press portrays narrow view of tennis 'Big picture' slwuld include tennis teachers working to get sport back on track

Unless you 've been hiding under a rock or living in a cave, you know the sport of tennis has received some negative press lately.

Sports Illustrated scrutinized tennis in a recent cover story, "Is Tennis Dying?" Playing pros took a beating and tennis was portrayed as a sport with little direction . A week later, one of the most visible women players was arrested for drug possession and the press devoured the news with great enthusiasm .

This was followed by a feature on the ups and downs of the women's professional tour in the May 22 edition of the Houston Chronicle.

The general public now is familiar with these tennis issues, but do they really care?

It's baseball season , the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League just con,9luded their finals, and people already . :are looking forward to football season .

I m sure we all would like to see tennis regain the public's respect. We'd also like to see an ncrease in player participation . just think we're going about it the wrong way.

Before we all take off in different directions, we should take a look at our sport from within . We're fragmented , self-absorbed and always look to blame the other "guy' (group) for our problems.

It's interesting that many of the positive aspects of tennis and the promotional efforts of tennis teachers were not included in the recent media blitz. Maybe we haven't earned the respect we deserve for all of the programs we support and create. Maybe the powers that be, or the writers, don't know that tennis-teaching professionals make up a strong industry group that influence our sport at its core grassroots players. wrote the following letter to the editor of Sports Illustrated. Since there's no guarantee that it will be published in the mag<fzine, I thought I would print it for a much more captive audience.

Dear Editor ¡ Yes, tennis is experiencing some tough times. The fact that you elected to spotlight our sport with negative sensationalism (Is Tennis Dying? May 9, 1994, cover) will not help our cause.

Sports Illustrated does point to the professional players as a cause for some of tennis ' problems, yet it does not address the many other segments .of our industry that are working hard to rebuild our sport. While some of the points in Sally Jenkins' article are valid, the information is incomplete and may do irreparable damage to tennis, destroying the very market we hope to impress the nontennis-playing public.

Tennis is making a serious effort to reach these nonplayers and "grow the game" through various programs, very few of which are mentioned in Ms. Jenkins' article.

While the story 's research might verify Courier 's reason for reading a book during changeovers, the editorial brevity of such an article rarely does justice to a person's motives. I don't think the actions described in the article exemplify his overall attitude about tennis. Courier has supported our game in many ways, including the promotion of USPTA tennis-teaching professionals.

While he may not be a showstopper like McEnroe, believe he has a long-term dedication to tennis. Your article conspicuously omits the positive actions of many players, especially the legendary ones that made tennis successful and continue to promote the game, only a few of which include Jack Kramer, Pancho Segura, Billie Jean King, Rod Laver, Cliff Drysdale and Fred Stolle.

Playing professionals are important to our industry, but the tennis teacher has direct contact with recreational players. Surveys indicate that teaching professionals have considerably more influence over consumers . Teachers represent a consumer 's first contact with the sport and

Now that Sports Illustrated has covered the negative aspects of our game, I hope you 'll consider giving tennis the positive coverage it deserves. I'd be happy to provide you with more than enough information to do this.

There are many hard-working people (and projects) in the tennis industry that are trying to spur a renewed interest in tennis. These people make their living teaching children and promoting a healthy and drug-free lifestyle through a great athletic endeavor.

Sadly, what Ms. Jenkins left out of the article is that, despite our problems, tennis is a wonderful lifetime activity that provides exercise, camaraderie, competition and fun for millions of players young and old, novice and advanced.

Poor volleys corrected with proper shoulder rotation QUESTION: I have a student who seems to reach forward for every forehand volley; so much that he looks very uncoordinated. As a result, his volley is inconsistent and lacks depth into the court. Can you offer any suggestions on how to work with him?

ANSWER: n the last month have worked with two world-class players (one ranked in the top 200 and another in the top 300 by the ATP Tour) who seem to do the same thing . One of them simply uses too much arm action with very little shoulder turn . have had to work very hard to get him to keep the arm action synchronized with the shoulder rotation , especially on the backswing . have him quickly set his hand and immediately turn his shoulders. At the completion of each forehand volley backswing , the arm itself should have moved very little, but instead be taken back more with the shoulder turn. This has helped him gain more consistency and depth on the shot.

The other client was a bit more interesting.

He was taught as a junior to set the racquet the same way on every volley, and then lower or raise the hand/racquet depending on where the ball contact was going to be. n other words, he always would prepare for a waist-high forehand volley. If the ball was at shoulder height, he would move his hand vertically until it was behind the ball and then move forward to ball contact. If it was going to be a low volley, preparation would be waist high and then he would lower the hand/ racquet straight down and forward to the ball

These extraneous actions caused a lot of problems in timing , racquet control , shot depth shot consistency and power. The hand was moving so much (especially out of sync with the shoulder rotation), that racquet control was impossible to achieve.

My goal with this player was to have him set the hand as one normally would for the volley, and then prepare with the shoulder turn, but take the racquet back with this shoulder turn so the racquet face was directly beh ind (or even slightly above, depending on the type of contact and spin you desire) the ball This enabled him to synchronize the trunk and arm movement so that racquet control was achieved more easily. nstead of relentlessly reaching for every volley, the stroke became more compact, efficient and effective. o

USPTA DRILLS The SO-ball game Purpose: To develop footwork for the advanced beginner, direction for the intermediate player, and passing shots for the advanced player. The game measures groundstroke proficiency.

Some juniors lack discipline and organization in their practice habits. In many cases, the players just hit. The 80-ball game can replace a lack of competition and provide juniors with objective feedback that sometimes is missing in pr~ctices.

The 80-ball game is a series of eight tests in which each student hits 10 balls for a total of 80 shots.

The 40-minute drill requires six students of similar playing ability, 30 tennis balls and two 33-foot ropes. Each rope is placed parallel to the single sidel ines; exactly 6 feet inside the singles line. The objective is to hit the balls into the proper target areas. One point is scored for each shot landing in the target area.

The game is divided into two halves. n the first half the student participates in four forehand tests. The first two measure the skill of hitting the forehand down the line, and the third and fourth tests record the forehand crosscourt shot. Each student hits 40 balls. n the second half each student participates in four backhand tests two down the line and two crosscourt for a total of 40 shots.

T h ~ teacher feeds the balls from the service line so that they land behind the other service line, allowing the student to hit them inside the baseline. The student runs to the ball and tries to hit it into the target area. After hitting one ball the student runs to the end of the line and waits for her next turn . n every test, each student hits 10 balls.

The students who are not hitting balls retrieve them and record the number of good shots landing in the target area.

A player who scores between 25 and 35 points is classified as an advanced beginner.

The 35- to 49-point range are scores of intermediate players. Advanced players score between 50 and 65 points. A 'tournament' player would score more than 65 points.

Tennis professional finds satisfaction in keeping tennis fun

neke Inky' Fischer is celebrating her 30th anniversary as the city of Boca Raton's (Fla.) tennis instructor. She also is marking 30 years as a USPTA member.

Each day of the week which began Feb. 27 she received a surprise from her players and friends balloons, a cake and other gifts.

At the end of the week, she was greeted at the Memorial Park Tennis Center pro shop by the mayor of Boca Raton and the city parks and recreation director. The mayor proclaimed March 4 as lneke Fischer Day and gave her the key to the city. One of her brothers, whom she had not seen in seven years, attended the celebration , and th13re were cards from friends and family throughout the United States.

It was one of the most beautiful days have ever had in this business. To be honored like that was just really 'II never forget it."

Fischer is an independent contractor for the city of Boca Raton , and she teaches tennis to people of all ages. She also coaches a women's league B-2 team in the Palm Beach County Women's Tennis Association , which comprises 20 women, the majority of which are between the ages of 40 and 50, although one of her players is 72 . always tease my women's clinic players because they don't chase after the balls, she said . say, 'A younger girl would of had it. _ -

Fischer was 10 years old when she first picked up a tennis racquet. Her family moved from Holland to Tenafly, N.J. in 1946, while she was recovering from spinal meningitis, and her brothers taught her to play tennis to help strengthen her back and legs.

As she grew up, Fischer continued to play tennis during the summers between high school terms. n 1953, she earned a spot on the New Jersey Junior Wightman Cup Team .

in those early days (late 1950s), the facilities for PE. were always the last ones to get any money, and as a result, the kids just hated coming to class because they knew that by the time they got back in the locker room somebody would have stepped on their clothes. There weren't enough showers and there weren't enough benches. It got so discouraging, because you love something so much and you want to transfer that to them, and then everything works against you In 1963, Fischer moved to Boca Raton and specialized in teaching tennis, which suited her better, she said . She first worked part time at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, and then was hired to start a tennis program for the city in 1964.

'Those people are out there (on the court) because they want to be out there, and that is a big plus, she said. It makes it much easier to teach "When 'm teaching at night, people come from their offices and say 'Oh Inky. almost canceled today. I just had such a rotten day.'

Then, when they finish their half-hour or hour, they 'll smile and they 'll say, 'm so glad I came because I feel so good .

'That's neat. That's a lot of satisfaction right there. think that 's what I like the most about teaching tennis giving people a good experience.'

Throughout her coaching career, Fischer has used creativity and a sense of humor to develop tennis programs and promote the sport in Boca Raton .

When she volunteered to begin a recreational tennis program at St. Paul Lutheran School, which her son, Greg, attended, she discovered that the school had no tennis courts. So, she tied old tennis nets between palm trees in the parking lot. it pays to have a sense 'It was great fun of humor,' she said .

She then established the boy's and girl 's tennis teams, which competed with other junior high teams on the city courts.

'This was big time. We practiced on 'real tennis courts, as the kids would say,' she saia . (continued on page 16)

Executive Connnittee restructures rneniliership categories, adds new nolllllenilier category

Several USPTA membership categories have been restructured and a new nonmember category created, as a result of an Executive Committee decision made at its April meeting .

Benefits of the existing categories remain the same.

USPTA recently ¡included pend ng members in the membership structure. This is a provisional teaching category which leads to becoming a certified member, pending successful completion of the USPTA Certification Exam. The Executive Committee elected to change the name of this category to affiliate to better identify the category.

Existing affiliate and club members now are grouped together more appropriately as corporate members. This is a nonteaching category for which the Certification Exam is not required . Corporate members will receive a new membership certificate.

A new nonmember category, USPTA associate, was created for college and high school coaches and physical education instructors. This category was developed to improve the skills of all people who teach tennis, and to increase the player base.

People in this category do not take the Certification Exam and cannot hold USPTA office or vote in USPTA elections.

USPTA associates will receive many

member benefits, such as AOOvantage magazine, the membership directory, a listing in the directory, Tennis magazine and Tennis Week magazine (for U.S. members only) .

Other benefits include discount rates on educational events and publications , medical , disability and group life insurance (not on-court liability) for a nominal rate; the option to purchase USPTA merchandise; Pro Penn ball discounts; and awards. USPTA associates will not receive some certified member benefits, such as the $2 million liability insurance, the opportunity to play in tournaments, the USPTA Employment Listings and free endorsee products. 6

Site proposals requested for new USPTA tournament

U

SPTA has created a new men's and women's national tournament, and is inviting certified members to submit proposals for sites to host the tournament.

The tournament, to be held annually in April or May, is for the open and 35s divisions with singles and doubles competition .

It replaces the International Tennis Teachers Championships, which no longer can be held during The Lipton Championships, because of space constraints.

Members who wish to propose a site as a venue for the tournament for a three-year period, may submit a formal proposal to the USPTA World Headquarters. The national office has prepared proposal guidelines listing key requirements for the tourney.

Members should contact their division president to request a copy. The proposal should contain responses to the list of questions.

Proposals will be accepted by mail, and must be received no later than 5 p.m ..

Central time on Aug. 1 Five copies of the proposal are required.

The tournament site, which will host the event for three consecutive years, will provide the tournament setup, athletic trainers, players' party, hotel accommodations for tournament personnel, and a portion of the prize money. Competition courts must be in USTA regulation design, and the site must have 12 or more courts of the same surface with lights, and one stadium-style court with the same surface.

USPTA selection criteria include the quality of the host site and how it meets USTA and USPTA specifications; the financial package presented ; airport accessibility· hotel accommodations previous experience by personnel at the host site in hosting successful tournament events; and additional player entertainment opportunities in the host city.

USPTA officials will inspect the finalist host sites and will announce their decision at the national Awards Breakfast during the USPTA National Convention. o

National Convention worth 8 credits The Continuing Education Program insert in the December 1993 ADDvantage incorrectly noted that the US PTA National Convention was worth nine continuing education credits.

The National Convention always has been worth eight credits. We apologize for this mistake.

Attendees will earn eight credits just for attending the convention, but they can earn up to 28 additional credits (far more than the nine credits necessary for the entire education period) by also attending Specialty Courses, a CTC, and USTA sport science exams scheduled during the convention.

People who lack education credits for the first period may earn enough credits to satisfy both education periods.

More than 20 four-hour Specialty Courses, each worth two points, will be held in addition to the regular convention seminars and activities.

Seniors a growing market for tennis

B

y the year 2000, the percentage of people in the United States ages 50 years and older will have increased by one-third , and the number of seniors playing tennis will have increased as well The USPTA Phoeni x Challenge/Love 50 Senior Recreational Leagues first recognized the growing senior population 12 years ago, and since then , the Phoenix Challenge/Love 50 league has grown from 30 members in its first year, to more than 2,000 members from the United States and around the world .

The Phoenix Challenge is a senior doubles league for players 50 years and older with NTRP rankings of 2.5 to 4.5. There is a special division for seniors 65 years and older, in which the NTRP ranking is not considered . Players pay national dues of $20 annually.

Following the league playoffs is the popular World Championship competition , held in April at a resort location. Senior teams from around the world attend this event.

National Convention provides education, credit opportunities ~e

National Convention provides an excellent way for USPTA members to further their education and earn continuing education credits.

More than 20 Specialty Courses, including four taught in Spanish , are scheduled during the convention , and members who register

by Aug. 16 may attend one or more courses for a $40 flat fee. The rate is available only to those preregistering for both the convention and the Specialty Courses. Walk-on registration for the Specialty Courses will not be accepted at the convention.

The deadline to cancel is Sept. 1 Anyone canceling late or failing to cancel will forfeit one-half the course fee.

Two Specialty Courses are eight hours long, the others have been condensed (from

eight hours to four hours) to accommodate the convention schedule. Members will receive two credits per four-hour course, and four credits per eight-hour course, toward their Continuing Education Program requirements.

Members interested in taking the Certification Training Course or upgrading their classification must prereg!ster by Sept. 1 by calling the USPTA Membership Department.

The Certification Exam and CTG-will be offered in portions over a six-day period . The CTC also is offered at a discounted rate of $40. Anyone interested in becoming certified must meet the membership requirements before they are allowed to preregister for the exam. Those interested in membership are encouraged to have all requirements met in August. o

Convention briefs Airport shuttle to National Convention Shuttle transportation is provided by La Quinta Hotel, Golf and Tennis Resort to and from the Palm Springs Airport. The price is $29 per person, per transfer. The shuttle departs on the hour from the hotel for the airport.

(continued from page 10) Fischer again showed her ingenuity during the early years of Boca Raton High School (late 1960s and early 1970s), when there was not a budget for tennis. While still working for the city, Fischer volunteered to organize a doubles tournament and player auction' with a professional auctioneer Local businesspeople teamed with high school players to compete.

The businesspeople bid on the player of their choice, and each participating adult received a free dinner for two from a local restaurant. The eyent raised $1,950, which paid the teams' tennis expenses for two years.

Fischer initiated 'Circus Day' in 1984 to kick off the city of Boca Raton's summer tennis program. Circus Day attracted 30 children in its first year. Its popularity grew, and so many people signed up during the last year it was held (1993), that they had to turn people away.

Fischer has been a USPTA member for as long as she has been with the city of Boca Raton . She joined U$PTA (then USPLTA) in December 1963, and served as secretarytreasurer of the Florida Division from 1966 to 1971 'When I first joined USPTA, there were very few women, and the meetings were like the good old boys were coming together for a few beers and a round robin , she said .

Fischer believes USPTA is moving in the right direction with educational programs.

It is so important to rejuvenate yourself by going to professional seminars, Fischer said . 'Getting nine credits is nothing if you enjoy your profession.

Fischer said the most important thing she can do for her students is to not push them .

She likes to emphasize the recreational aspect of tennis.

It gives them the confidence to be able to call up a friend and say, Do you want to hit some?' she said Fischer said she used to be a rigid teacher, and that all her students had the same swing and the same footwork.

'They were all new nky clones' walking around , she said .

Now, Fischer has relaxed her methods. truly believe in tennis on the lighter side, she said. 'Over the years 've mellowed , and have gotten to the point that if the ball goes over the net and it stays inside the lines, then let it go and let them run with it. And as long as you know they aren't hurting themselves, you leave them alone and let them enjoy it. o 16

Mixed doubles rule: Players eliminated from, or not entered in, regular doubles play may enter mixed doubles. While limiting each player to two events, this enables players to avoid choosing between two events.

Creative marketing enhances benefits

of USPTA Adult Tennis League E

ach year, thousands of players participate in a variety of leagues throughout the country. There are leagues in the spring , summer and fall ; there are leagues for juniors, seniors and other adults ; there are corporate leagues and intraclub leagues, and many more.

With all of these leagues, how does one distinguish the USPTA Adult Tennis League from the others and successfully promote it?

First, identify the unique features of the USPTA Adult Tennis League. The squad format, with two doubl.es teams at each of four NTRP playing levels, encourages camaraderie among the most experienced and novice players. The recommended NTRP levels are 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5/5.0; however, tennis professionals may determine which four levels are most suitable for local players.

Competition may be held in women's, men's or mixed doubles. Area Directors, USPTA professionals who coordinate leagues in a specific location, and Site Directgrs, tennis professionals who organize squads at clubs and facilities, may select any of the three doubles formats. They also may create a mi xed-level league in which one women's doubles team and one men's doubles team compete at each level.

Secondly, generate interest in the league by using a few public relations tools. One tool is the sample press release which appeared in the league program guide in the June issue of AOOvantage magazine. Fill in the appropriate blanks, photocopy the release and send it to local newspapers, and radio and television stations. Also, submit the release to the club newsletter, and regional and local tennis publications.

The exi sting networks of local league players and tennis professionals also are very important. Since one of the most effective forms of promotion is word-of-mouth key players may be encouraged to participate in the league after hearing an explanation of its unique qualities. Explain that USPTA's league is not intended to replace existing P[Ograms, but to serve as additional programming during the late summer and autumn months.

Thirdly, develop creative marketing tech niques to promote the league to specific target groups. Tennis players often have special needs and interests. Identify those needs and interests and tailor the league accordingly. Specialized leagues in which players may have an interest include senior leagues, women's leagues or mixed doubles.

Once the league has been customized , organize a kick-off clinic with activities that will appeal to players. Kick-off clinics also serve as excellent opportunities to boost pro shop sales, such as hosting a fashion show to model the pro shop's apparel and shoe lines. For senior players, stock products such as vibration dampeners or cushion insoles for shoes.

Throughout the league season , professionals may host special clinics on topics such as mental toughness or footwork. A clinic emphasizing doubles strategies and tactics may work well during the early portion of the league season to help¡ players improve their skills. At special league clinics, professionals also may encourage food and beverage sales for the club by including a cookout or luncheon .

To promote the USPTA league to tennis players who traditionally do not participate in leagues, publicize the program at events they will attend. Hand out league information materials at golf tournaments, in the health/fitness center, or at appropriate social functions. Attend open board and committee meetings and announce the program to members.

Another way to attract nonleague players is to develop comprehensive packages that include a combination of lessons, clinics and league play. Offer students a 'special discount' on a program that incorporates

league activity as a fun, competitive part of the learning process. Group clinics for league participants may be a great way to encourage more players to register, since the cost of group lessons is often lower than that of private lessons.

Tennis carnivals bring fun to children, parents T.nnis carnivals are a great way for professionals to inspire children , involve parents and increase excitement in their junior programs.

The USPTA Little Tennis'M program provides an excellent opportunity for such an event during the final week of each season.

The carnival has stations which allow children to show off their tennis skills to their parents, and create lasting impressions which hopefully will influence them to sign up for the next season .

A station is a location where children will be involved with one specific activity. For example, at the first station, children may be asked to see how many times they can tap the ball from the ground to the racquet before they miss.

In a tennis carnival multiple stations designed to test or rely on specific skills are placed on a court. Children are divided into groups and visit each station for a short period of time (five to 10 minutes), after which they rotate to the next station .

Carnival events may include target hitting, relays, tennis games, and tests for eye-hand coordination , striking skills and tracking skills.

Balloons, Hula Hoops, stuffed animals, beach balls, inflatable targets, bean bags and large foam balls may be used in conjunct~on with activities.

For even more excitement, a volunteer could be recruited to dress as a popular cartoon character or clown to visit with the children . Hot dogs, popcorn, soft drinks or punch may be served as refreshments.

There are several steps a professional should take when organizing a tennis carnival.

• Write a lesson plan and include the following information: • Number of stations and length of time at each • An explanation and demonstration of what skill test, game · or activity will be presented at each station; • Number of tries a student gets at each station ; • Safety factor for each station; and • Scoring for each station .

• Separate children into groups based on their skill levels. It is important that the children be registered before the day of the event in order to determine group sizes.

Assign each group a color and give each child a colored name tag for his or her shirt.

• Encourage parents to wear name tags that match their children's for easy identification in case their help is needed . Professionals and assistants also should wear colored name tags that correspond with the groups they will direct to help children recognize group leaders.

• Mark each station with the appropriate color by using tape, posters or balloons, and explain to the children that they are to remain with their groups and not leave their areas unless accompanied by an adult.

• Group stations for each skill level on separate courts or half-courts to prevent accidents.

• Assign two or more parents or assistants to serve as monitors on each court.

Monitors will help supervise and keep score in competitive events.

At the end of the event, the professional should reorganize. children into one group and award individual and team prizes for such things as best performance at each station , most improved players, best specific skills and good sports-· manship. Every child should receive some type of award .

USTA • The USTA has named Lindsay Davenport, Mary Joe Fernandez, Zina Garrison Jackson and Gigi Fernandez to the 1994 U.S. Federation Cup team , which will compete at the Federation Cup, July 18-24, in Frankfurt, Germany. This is the final year in which the competition will be staged in one week at one site.

• More than 100 USPTA Texas Division members are serving on various committees for the USTA Texas Section this year.

Dennis Crowell, Amarillo, is vice president of the Texas Section, and Randy Mattingley, Fort Worth and Chuck Sanchelli, Houston, are serving three-year terms on the Texas Tennis Association Executive Committee.

Cheryl Potts, Plano, serves on the TIA as the Northeast Zone chairwoman and Dallas USTA Area Training Center Coordinator.

• An endowment created by The Club Foundation to fund education and research opportunities for the club management industry received a boost from The Textron Group. The group, which consists of Jacobsen , Textron Financial Corporation , Textron Specialty Materials and E-Z-Go, pledged $100,000 to Campaign of Excellence. The Club Foundation hopes to secure pledges totaling $3 million to create the permanent endowment.

• The Club Managers Association of America's executive vice president, James B. Singerling, has been named the president of the United States Culinary Team Foundation, a nonprofit education foundation established in 1983 to finance and promote the United States' involvement in nternational cui nary competitions worldwide.

• The U.S. Tennis Court and Track Builders Association will soon release its 1994-95 Membership Directory. The directory contains information on more than 250 companies and individuals worldwide, and the USTC&TBA, including membership criteria, meetings and the awards program .

Miscellany • High school students Cameron Gram of Fayetteville, N.C. Benjamin Gologor of New York, and Jeff Wang of Silver Spring, Md. won scholarships from Tennis: Europe. The

student athletes will represent the United States this summer at major international tournaments. The director of Tennis: Europe is USPTA member Martin Vinokur Gram will receive $2,000, and Gologor and Wang receive $1,000 each. The scholarships were created in honor of two Tennis: Europe participants who were killed in domestic air and auto accidents, respectively.

Asahi endorsement ends Asahi and USPTA will conclude their endorsement relationship on July 1.

For two and a half years, Asahi served as the exclusively endorsed shoe of USPTA. Tim Heckler, USPTA CEO, said that the relationship ended very positively, with good will between both organizations.

"We thank Asahi and wish them the best of luck in their endeavors," Heckler said.
