Iven though it's only August, this is the perfect time for tennis professionals to begin planning for 1994. To produce changes that are positive and geared to success, pros can never start early enough.

The situation is similar to that of a student who takes a lesson on Wednesday in order to prepare for a tournament on Saturday. The teaching pro might be able to make some cosmetic and minor changes to the student's game, but chances are substantial that growth will not occur.

Since changes are often difficult to implement, pros need the support of others to buy into' their programs. The following are some suggestions that hopefully will make the process easier.

Review the existing program Tennis pros should analyze their activities and participation during the past few years.

What trends are emerging? Are players taking more group lessons or private lessons?

Are they playing more singles or doubles?

How have their buying habits changed in the pro shop? Is participation in event programming increasing or decreasing?

To find the answers to these questions, I highly recommend that pros analyze hard data, not just feelings about the market and member participation. When speaking as the resident expert for the club or facility, be certain to provide actual facts, not estimates.

Build a team Since the foundation for making good decisions is having accurate information, consider enlisting a team of quality advisers.

Make plans now for success in 1994 The advisers should be from a variety of groups, such as managers and owners, other pros, staff and members.

• Club manager/owner — Before implementing any plans, make certain they coordinate with the overall scheme of the club. This also is a good time to start discussing the capital improvements that the club will require in the coming year.

It's an expensive venture to resurface courts or obtain new windscreens. If they aren't planned in the budget, the improvements have almost no chance of becoming a reality.

• Associate professionals — If you are fortunate enough to have associate professionals at the club, be sure to solicit their feedback and opinions. At this time in the planning process, the goal is to have as many quality people as possible to be your eyes and ears. After all, most programs rely on the pros to make them happen, and without their support, most programs will die. Also, if someone is directly involved in the decision process, he/she will take ownership of the project and help to ensure its success.

• Club and pro shop staffs — These employees are critical, since they have contact with, and speak to, all members of a club or facility. Members often find it easier to communicate with staff personnel, rather than a club official or director. For many members, it is less threatening and they are more apt to speak their minds. Be sure to train staff

personnel to forward all messages to the pro, regardless of how trivial they may be.

• Past, current and future members — Exit interviews (the interview given to members when they leave a club) can be very revealing and should be taken seriously.

Current club members, especially those who are inactive, should be polled to see what would help them become more involved in activities. With future members or potential customers, discover their needs and desires for service through questionnaires, letters and personal contact.

• Other USPTA professionals — One of the most valuable tools we have is our fellow USPTA professional. The sharing of ideas about successful programs is a key to the future of our Association. Being constantly in touch with peers to exchange ideas and projects is a requirement for success.

Once a pro has received input from a variety of quality sources, he or she will be in a better position to make decisions and changes to a business plan for the future.

This is simply another key part of being a 'professional.

Finally, would like to thank all of the pros who have made time to include USPTA's Across America Tennis Day n their schedules. More than 2,200 professionals from around the country donated their time for the betterment of our sport and profession. Dear USPTA. From June 2-6, attended the Florida Division Convention of the USPTA. The site at Sanibel Harbor Resort was a wonderful choice. The facilities were immediately at hand, the hotel staff was very attentive, and the evening sunsets were memorable. am writing to thank Ed Kraus, Florida convention chairman, for his efforts in coordinating an increasingly complex series of seminars, speakers and meeting rooms.

Rarely was there a situation in which a pro attending the event was inconvenienced.

Many people are probably not aware of the effort it takes to help a state convention move so smoothly.

Although attended the convention to attain the necessary points for continuing education, was impressed at the professionalism of all the seminars I attended. Barbara Braunstein conducted an especially comprehensive look at becoming a better employer through her Quality Management course.

My thanks to Ed for all of his work at this year's state convention, 'm sure that his future efforts will also achieve outstanding results.

The advertising game: USPTA Pro Penn ball bounces through comparison war Tim Heckler, CEO

JL hope most of you are as confused as am about the barrage of tennis ball ads appearing in various national magazines, n the current war of words and photos, it seems USPTA is either in an extremely enviable position or in a very perplexing one. After all, a product usually has gained notoriety if it becomes the target of a competitor's campaign, but it also could stand to lose as much if it mishandles the response to a negative assault.

The two major ball manufacturers in the United States, Penn Racquet Sports and Wilson Sporting Goods Company, appear to be in an all out effort to capture the largest share of the pro shop ball market. Penn, as you know, produces USPTA's pro shop ball USPTA Pro Penn.

In my opinion, USPTA's adoption more than 20 years ago of a pro-line tennis ball featuring the association's name, and our agreement to have Penn produce and promote it, largely is responsible for the current credibility of the entire Penn ball line even those Penn balls not covered by our endorsement.

If you played the game before 1974, you may remember when Penn was not among the three top-selling brands of tennis balls on department store and pro shop shelves. It was only after USPTA teaching pros adopted the Pro Penn brand that all Penn balls (for pro shops and general retail stores) began an unprecedented climb to the No. 1 position in the market share ratings. Although the business arrangements varied, the development of the USPTA Pro Penn ball was not much different than other private label brands being produced for other tennis distributors by General Tire & Rubber Company

(now known to us as Penn Racquet Sports a division of GenCorp). At that time, one of these resale distributors (and ball labels) also happened to be Wilson. Some years later, Wilson built its own factory and has since produced its own ball in the United States.

While we always have believed the USPTA Pro Penn to be the flagship ball in the Penn fleet, it still seems a notable honor to USPTA for Wilson to isolate our ball as its primary competitor in a nationwide consumer campaign. n the 70s, teaching professionals were, as they are now, the most credible source of recommendation for hard goods in the tennis industry. When the USPTA Pro Penn ball gained their support, it was only a matter of innovative by-product packaging and name identification that allowed Penn to improve the distribution of its own line of Penn

brand balls in other retail and discount stores.

This is why continue to insist that Penn's success was due not only to the smart marketing strategy of a great company, but to consumer credibility gained by other Penn brand balls largely due to acceptance of the Pro Penn brand by teaching pros.

Regardless, Pro Penn and other -Penn brand balls now have moved into the top selling position in pro shops and retail stores.

What is most significant to USPTA members is that the Pro Penn ball makes up an important part of Penn Racquet Sports' annual ball sales. This is good news, since USPTA, its divisions and our members receive commissions and discounts on sales of Pro Penn balls, which support many Association programs throughout the grassroots of tennis.

The Pro Penn ball also is unique in that it provides USPTA members with an exclusive product that can be marketed without fear and interference from discount retailers. This probably is the best reason for supporting the USPTA Pro Penn brand. Not only is it the highest quality and best-playing ball on the market today, but it also offers you the strongest industry support available.

During the past year, Wilson began running a series of ads to promote its own ball by attacking the Pro Penn ball. Occasionally, members have asked why Wilson would single out USPTA's ball in a negative campaign as opposed to all of the other Penn brand balls. While we always have believed the USPTA Pro Penn to be the flag(continued on page 13) ADDvantage August 1993

pecial events should be just that special. To make them that way, concentrate on the little details or extras when planning and implementing the event. Ultimately, it is these details which will set your event apart from others.

To do this, first find out exactly what kind of special events your members want you to host. Do they want a member/guest event, or a member-only one, and if so, what type?

Do they want to participate in a pro-am invitational an interclub champions challenge, a pro-celebrity exhibition, or a prize-money professional tournament? From my experi-

ence, most club members want to play rather than merely watch so let us examine events in which they may participate.

In putting together a member/guest event, decide if it will last one day or over a weekend have had great success with the shorter event and very little with the weekend one. Member/guest days can be extremely popular with women members because an event limited to one day makes it easier for them to find and invite a favorite partner who has no time conflicts.

partners of similar playing ability, so that they may be placed in two, distinct, fixed-partner, round robins one for the advanced and one for ntermediate players. Call them gold and platinum flights. Play five-game rounds (four games, no-ad plus a nine-point tiebreaker no matter what the score) Keep track of each doubles team's total games won. If some teams must sit out a round with a bye because of the number of entries, derive your winners by calculating the percentage of games won (total games won divided by the total games played).

Award trophies to the winners and runnersup of each flight, and give funny prizes, such as neon shoe laces, to some of the other players.

Begin this event at 9:30 a.m and finish around noon Give favors such as bag tags, T-shirts or commemorative towels to each player as she registers. Serve a continental breakfast before play starts and provide courtside soft drinks and sport drinks during matches.

Once play is complete, adjourn to an awards luncheon with an optional fashion show in your clubhouse dining room. Have the club's member/guest committee plan the menu and ask the management to provide complimentary carafes of wine, or glasses of champagne. Get local merchants to donate prizes which may be given away via a lottery drawing.

The cost for the women's guest day can be from as little as $20 per team to $40, depending upon what extras you provide. It is amazing what freebies will be donated just by asking.

A men's member/guest event also can be a single-day affair with courtside beer and a sandwich buffet for lunch but male members usually want a more extensive weekend tournament. The problem is the incompatibility of different teams' ability levels, caused by the dreaded, guest ringer.

Get around this by acquiescing and running a member/guest ringer tournament, complete with a team auction at a pre-tournament draw party.

By labeling it a 'guest ringer' and encouraging your members to invite the best

players they know to be their partners, your quality of play will be high and competition keen. Even your less advanced players who do not wish to compete in this 'too strong for my game" event truly will enjoy watching the high caliber of play.

A particularly difficult special event which allows members the best of both worlds is watching professional doubles and playing in a pro-am team invitational.

The entry fee for an event of this scale is usually $50 to $100 per team once again it depends upon what is provided. To do it right, supply heavy hors d'oeuvres with a cash/signature bar (where members sign for their drinks) at the draw party, a continental breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and courtside beverages as they play.

Award crystal or silver trophies to the champions and finalists and split the money raised.

A particularly difficult special event which allows members the best of both worlds is watching professional doubles and playing in a pro-am team invitational Such an event can include women and men, and can accommodate the different ability levels of both professional and amateur players. It consists of an optional golf tournament for interested fairway hackers, a prize-money, professional, doubles team event, and a proam doubles team auction tournament.

The golf event is held to attract sponsors, tennis professionals who like to play golf and members who want to play golf and tennis.

The tennis entry fee is $100 per player (an additional $25 for golf), including the professionals. For this, each player gets a tennis (and golf) goodie bag, new balls for each match, a poolside auction and draw party on Friday night, a continental breakfast, lunches during the weekend, courtside beverages and a Saturday night, member-hosted party.

Spouses and guests are invited to both parties.

Professionals are divided evenly and placed on four equally talented teams, ndi-

vidual matches consist of men's, women's and mixed doubles played on five or seven courts simultaneously. All matches are the best two of three sets, with the 12-point tiebreaker rule in effect, six games-all n any set.

Member amateurs and professionals also are placed on eight evenly matched teams and play an elimination draw with consolation round for first-round losing teams. Once again, individual team matches feature men's, women's and mixed doubles played simultaneously. A tentative schedule for an event of this magnitude may be found on this, page.

Finally, in order to stimulate interest in your club championship tournaments and those of nearby clubs, why not host an interclub champions challenge? Invite seven other clubs in close geographic proximity to send their club singles champions (women and men), club doubles champions (women and men) and mixed doubles winners to compete against one another over one weekend late in the calendar year. Small draws of eight players mean two matches on Saturday and one on Sunday (finals and consolation finals).

Have each club, not the entrants themselves, donate a $125 entry fee. Allot a $1,000 budget to provide balls, favors, courtside beverages and trophies, including an overall challenge cup won by the club that wins the most matches. If you can attract a sponsor, host a pre-tournament draw party on Friday night with a silent auction where all proceeds benefit a local charity.

Making events special requires much creativity, attention to detail and hard work, but their continual success is a direct result of your managerial skills and will make you something special as well <0>

The 66th annual event will be held Sept. 18-26 at the Boca Raton Resort and Club in Boca Raton, Fla. As with any USPTA event, the convention offers many opportunities for tennis-teaching professionals to expand their knowledge of the sport of tennis. This year's convention is no different, with more than 140 hours of education. This includes 19 Specialty Courses, which are available only to preregistered attendees and are free of charge.

Members can earn up to 30 education credits during the convention.

Professionals are reminded that the first phase of USPTA's Continuing Education Program ends Dec. 31 1993. Because of the. short amount of time left in the year, USPTA hopes many members take advantage of the seminars and free Specialty Courses offered at the convention. In order to attend the Specialty Courses, most of which will be offered in a condensed four-hour format, members must register for both the convention and the courses by Aug. 17

The four-hour segments earn two education credits each. An Awards Breakfast on Sept. 22 will recognize the new USPTA Professional of the Year and other outstanding members of the Association.

The free parties and receptions held throughout the convention add to the Boca nightlife, and offer pros a chance to network and meet in a casual setting. A covenant not to compete

,n the January/February 1977 issue of ADDvantage wrote an article on covenants not to compete as they relate to the tennis professional. I thought that would solve everyone's problems in this area, but still receive calls asking for my opinion. Let me try again, hope this will at last put the questions to rest, at least for another 16 years.

A covenant not to compete might be first introduced when a professional applies for a tennis teaching job at a club. One of the terms in the club's contract proposal is the following: Upon the termination of this agreement, employee agrees that he or she will not teach tennis within a radius of 25 miles from the club for a period of at least one year.' This clause involves the following set of considerations: 1 Why is the clause important to the club and to the professional? For the club, sometimes it is almost a question of survival. The club is trying to ensure that a popular professional does not take a portion of its membership with her (or him) when she departs. For the professional it is also a question of survival. She must make sure that when she leaves the club she will be able to acquire another teaching job as soon as possible in the same neighborhood, and not necessarily have to move elsewhere.

2 Do courts enforce a covenant not to compete? Not necessarily. Absent a controlling statute, the usual test for enforcement by a court is whether or not the clause is reasonable. The decision will be based on whether the court believes a club has reasonably protected its interest in its clientele, as opposed to the professional's right to earn a living in her own neighborhood. Sometimes a court will modify the clause on its own initiative to reduce the time or distance set forth.

For instance, it may reduce the time of prohibition from six to three months or a distance of fifty to ten miles.

3. How does the question of enforceability usually arise? The issue will often

arise in the following manner. Sue, a tennis professional, needs a job. She approaches the Dry Gulch Country Club, which has an opening. 'Sure, the owner says, 'you can have the job. Just sign this agreement. It contains the covenant not to compete: no teaching within a radius of 25 miles for one year. Sue, expecting to stay at the club for a long time, and needing the job, signs. A year goes by.

Sue has become quite successful. Many club members like her teaching. The junior program is flourishing. The contract is coming to the end of the term. Sue wants more money but the owner says Too much. Sue says Not enough' and they part company. Here is where the fun begins.

Again, Sue needs a job. All suitable clubs in the area, however, are within a 25-mile radius of her old club. Hoping that the first club will not bring legal action, she applies for work at a neighboring club.

She either does not tell the owner of the covenant not to compete or he decides to ignore it. n any event, she gets the job.

By word of mouth, information reaches the old club of Sue's new position. At neither club is there a significant initiation fee and Sue is a better teacher than the new professional at the old club. Many of Sue's prior pupils start drifting to the new

club, n addition, Sue soon has a successful juniors' program with many of her former charges. The owner of the first club is not oblivious to this and commences a law suit against Sue and the new club. He seeks specific enforcement of the covenant not to compete plus damages.

4. The court's verdict? am sorry you asked because cannot give you a definite answer. It would depend on the law of the particular state in which the club is located. For example, in Colorado, which has a statute covering covenants not to compete, verdict for Sue and her new club. Colorado's agreement not to compete statute reads as follows: 8-2-113. Unlawful to intimidate workman â&#x20AC;&#x201D; agreement not to compete.

(1) It shall be unlawful to use force, threats, or other mea*ns of intimidation to prevent any person from engaging in any lawful occupation at any place he sees fit.

(2) Any covenant not to compete which restricts the right of any person to receive compensation for performance of skilled or unskilled labor for any employer shall be void, but this subsection (2) shall not apply to: (a) Any contract for the purchase and sale of a business or the assets of a business; (b) Any contract for the protection of trade secrets; (c) Any contractual provision providing for recovery of the expense of educating and training an employee who has served an employer for a period of less than two years; (d) Executive and management personnel and officers and employees who constitute professional staff to executive and management personnel.

As you can see, in Colorado, for a covenant not to compete to be enforceable it must be coupled with the sale of a business or some other interest. And, even here, the Colorado courts have ruled that the covenant must be reasonable as to both duration and geographic scope, n Sue's case, the covenant not to compete was not coupled with an interest and therefore if the matter arose in that state she would have prevailed.

In states which allowed covenants not to compete without the necessity of being accompanied by the sale of a business, but still evaluate the reasonableness of the covenant, my strong feeling is that the covenant was unenforceable.

One year is much too long a time to legitimately protect the first club and 25 miles is far too large a radius, particularly if all the neighboring clubs are within this area. I think 10 miles for two months might be considered reasonable. But, one would have to research cases in the jurisdiction to give a more definite answer.

5. Solicitation of members. What if Sue solicited members of her first club to follow her to the second one? In my opinion, this would be wrongful. A club's membership list is its property and the professional may not make use of it. She can develop her own list from public sources such as the telephone book but she may not use

knowledge gained in her prior job a fine line perhaps. Another fine line is whether she can mail a neutral announcement of her new position to the old club members. Whether a court would construe this as a solicitation is arguable.

I tend to think it would. Rules about membership lists and solicitation of membership are not strictly issues pertaining to covenants not to compete, but they often arise as related problems.

Speaking on a practical level, what should you do if you are seeking a job at a club and it wants you to sign a covenant not to compete that you feel is unduly restrictive? My answer is either to argue with the club owner yourself or hire a lawyer to do it for you. Depending on how you feel about such things, you could sign the agreement with the hope that a court will not enforce it in the future. This is up to you. As to the last point, have been asked why a court will not enforce a contractual provision that a party entered into of his own free will My answer is that courts will always refuse to enforce clauses that are against public policy, e.g., a contract to commit a crime.

Finally, a recent case in New York state shows how closely a court will scrutinize a covenant not to compete, n this case, a dentist sold his practice to another dentist. The seller of the business agreed that he would not practice dentistry within a radius of 10 miles from the buyer for three years. The seller proceeded to set up a practice within a radius of 9.8 miles from the buyer. The buyer sued to enforce the covenant not to compete. The seller proved that the nearest distance to the other dentist was 10.2 miles by city street even though it was 9.8 miles as the crow flies. The court held for the seller in this case. It might be noted that in New York, plain covenants not to compete will rarely be enforced but that covenants not to compete coupled with the sale of a business will be enforced, if reasonable. &

reating programming opportunities to benefit teaching professionals has been the focus of USPTA's sports marketing efforts during the last few years. Across America Tennis Day and its supplemental programs, the USPTA Adult Tennis League, and the Champion of Champions club tournament program are projects the Association has developed and implemented.

For several years, there has been a great need for an infusion of new players and the activities necessary to keep them playing.

Most industry groups have responded by devoting time and money toward this effort.

USPTA has gone one step further by creating programs that not only increase general tennis participation, but also serve as profit-making ventures for its members.

The USPTA Adult Tennis League is a good example. The adult tennis league reaches new and existing players by using a strong grassroots network of dedicated professionals.

The league has been improved and redesigned for 1993.

'We have used our experience from the 1992 league season to improve the format for players and to make it more advantageous to participating professionals, Tim Heckler, CEO, said.

The league initially was administered from the national office, with part of the entry fees used to offset costs for staff time, programming, promotion and extensive computerization. The remaining portion of the entry

fees was given to Area Directors and divisions for the time they spent running the league.

This year, a new and improved 1993 USPTA Adult Tennis League includes the following changes: • Entry fees will not be sent to the National League Office, but will be kept by the professionals who organize and run the leagues.

• Area Directors (not the National League Office) will provide league awards, compensation to Site Directors (if deemed necessary), and any additional printing and postage.

CD The Area Director will send you a weekly league update to display at your tennis facility once play begins.

CD If there are no playoffs, the Area Director will send awards for the season champions (the top squad plus the top level in all four categories) to the appropriate Site Directors. If your squad receives an award, display it in your tennis facility with a group photo of squad members.

CD If there are playoffs, you will receive a playoff schedule from your Area Director Display this schedule in your tennis facility and give a copy to each of your captains.

CD Reserve courts for any playoff matches to be held at your facility CD Display playoff results and any awards won in your club.

RuUs ANd OPERATIONS oF TERMS Area — Generally an Area is a city and its surrounding suburbs, but this may be adjusted to meet local needs and player participation.

Area Director — A USPTA pro who runs the league in a designated Area. He or she does the scheduling, determines the squad and doubles formats, selects league awards, establishes the entry fees, provides incentives to Site Directors and relays information to USPTA. Level — One of four playing divisions of a squad, based on the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP). Each level has two doubles teams.

Level captain — A player who is in charge of the two doubles teams on his or her level. A level captain must see that each team member plays at the correct NTRP level and reports at the proper time and place for each match. At home league matches, he or she should see that his or her teams provide balls (preferably USPTA Pro Penn balls). Before each match, level captains of opposing squads must exchange lineups in writing simultaneously Also, both captains must record match scores and send score cards to the Area Director each week.

Mixed level One women's doubles team and one men's doubles team play at each level in a squad.

NTRP rating — A rating of a player's skill according to the National Tennis Rating Program,'which was developed^y USPTA, the United States Tennis Association and IRSA, the Association of Quality Clubs.

Site Director The tennis pro at the facility or club (site) who coordinates one or more squads. The Site Director does not have to be a USPTA tennis professional.

Squad Eight doubles teams (two at each of four levels) that represent a tennis facility or organization. Each squad has a minimum of 16 players.

Team — One of two doubles teams at each level on a squad.

Each league consists of a maximum of eight squads, and each squad has eight doubles teams. Although a league may have fewer squads, eight squads offer the greatest player enjoyment. More than one squad may represent a facility Squads are divided into four NTRP levels of two doubles teams each.

The Area Director determines the NTRP levels for his or her league.

Each Area Director selects the seven-week league season (any time from July 1 through December 31) for his or her Area. Site Directors should be consulted on the best schedule for local facilities.

USPTA does not wish this league to replace those of others, such as USTA or Ultra Slim-Fast TeamTennis. Our objective is to create additional playing opportunities and we find conflict counterproductive.

PUyER EiiqibiliTy All players must be at least 19 years old when playing the first league match and may be listed on only one team roster Each player must have an NTRP rating to compete. A squad member may play on a higher level doubles team, but not on a lower one. Failure to play at the correct level will result in a forfeit.

Players added to the roster or moved to a higher NTRP level during the season must be submitted in writing to the Area Director prior to their first matches. The third move of a player is permanent.

Professional players and full-time teaching professionals are ineligible.

Schedules Schedules will be mailed by the Area Director to each Site Director whose squad has paid its fees by the stated deadlines. It is recommended that each tennis facility have two levels play at home and two levels play away each week to minimize court time at each facility

MATCHES Play will be the best two out of three sets, regular scoring, with a 12point tiebreaker if play reaches 6-all. Each team member may play only one match per day. If time becomes a factor, use no-add scoring or play a 12-point tiebreaker to determine the third set if the match is at one set apiece.

PUyoFFs The Area Director will decide if his or her league(s) will have a playoff and how many squads and level teams participate. Season results do not affect playoffs.

Warm-up is limited to 10 minutes and a 15-minute default rule will be in effect.

If there is no playoff: Champions will be decided in five categories top squad and the top four levels. Winners will be the squad and level teams that won the most matches during the season.

The Area Director will determine match times and will send a schedule to each Site Director who will forward it to level captains.

Home squads will furnish new balls to ensure consistency from court to court. It is recommended that only USPTA Pro Penn tennis balls be used for league play.

If two squads or level teams are tied, the tie shall be broken by the first of the following procedures that applies:

Most matches won during the season in head-to-head competition between the two tied squads or level teams.

The least number of games lost during the season.

The two squads or level teams will have a head-to-head playoff to determine the season champion.

ScoRJNq Each match is worth one point. A squad may earn a maximum of eight points in one week. Score cards must be received by the Area Director within one week of the match. Both level captains must return score cards. If only one card is received, it will be the recorded score; if neither is received, teams for both squads wil receive no points.

All forfeits shall be noted as a forfeit and the non-forfeiting team shall be given the score 6-0, 6-0.

If there is a playoff: • Squad playoffs. A tournament could be held for all squads in the league, with seedings determined by the final season results.

Rained-out matches should be made up within one week of the originally scheduled match, or both teams will receive no points. If a match has started and is suspended because of rain, begin with the same set and game score when play resumes.

Level playoffs (recommended). Same procedure as for squad playoffs, but will follow by at least 24 hours. If there is a tie, the winner will be decided by the first that applies: The least games lost during that playoff match, or a 12-point tiebreaker between the squads' No. 1 doubles teams at that level.

ship ball in the Penn fleet, it still seems a notable honor to USPTA for Wilson to isolate our ball as its primary competitor in a nationwide consumer campaign. The compliment is even greater when you consider that USPTA Pro Penn is sold only to pro shops, and when compared to the total national retail and discount sales of both Wilson and other Penn brand balls combined, Pro Penn can be only a small percentage of the gross national sales of all balls sold.

Wilson's financial investment in this negative advertising campaign has outdone even Penn Racquet Sports' efforts to promote the Pro Penn ball to national consumers. Gordon Collins, USPTA president, jokingly remarked to me, It has taken a company that is not endorsed by USPTA to put our name before millions of consumer players, even if their ads are a little negative.

As a further matter, Penn Racquet Sports has undertaken a serious campaign to promote its own Penn Centre Court and Penn 1 balls to USPTA pro shops. Since many pro shops carry at least two brands of balls, must assume this is Penn's effort tot retain the strongest pro shop market share.

Of course, if members carry a second brand of balls, we recommend highly that they choose another Penn product, but under no circumstances should they replace their own USPTA Pro Penn line with the Penn 1 Penn Centre Court or any other ball.

It is impossible for USPTA to undertake a comparable national advertising campaign against the funds, personnel or strategies of corporate giants. However, we have an ability with which no one can compete. We can communicate honestly and frequently with each member through our democratically elected officials and our national and divisional magazines and newsletters. Positive attitude and self-confidence are fundamentals for winning

player must have confidence in his or her tennis ability in order to win matches.

The amount of time it takes players to lose their confidence and become discouraged during a match determines their "confidence quotient' (CQ). The CQ allows a player to determine if he or she possesses a winning attitude.

This winning attitude comes from not getting discouraged no matter what happens during the match When players become discouraged, their confidence begins to give way to doubt and hesitation, and they no longer play to win, they play oot to lose.

This changes a winning attitude into a losing attitude, which is telegraphed to the opponent by body language, posture and movement on the court. Confident people are winners; they maintain a positive attitude no matter what happens and never seem to get discouraged. See where your confidence level fits in the following scenarios.

What's your CQ? CQ 1 This player gets discouraged when he starts to think about the upcoming match, or, if he can keep calm that long, when he sees the opponent walk onto the court. The opponent fosters these feelings, of course, by dressing in the latest fashions and carrying three or four racquets in a large bag. The bag also contains several extra shirts (for more important matches later on), dry socks, wristbands and extra string sets so that people will think he strings his own racquets.

Even if this player's opponent appears on court in a full leg cast, the match is over before it starts. The very idea of competition gets this player discouraged.

CQ2 This player has managed to get past the initial shock of seeing her opponent dressed for Wimbledon and her conviction that the woman actually was a Wimbledon finalist in 1983 or 1984. But she gets discouraged as soon as she begins to hit with the opponent, 14

who hits the ball back several times during warm-up. 'Good grief the player thinks.

"She is good. There's no way can beat her.'

Like players with CQ 1 players with CQ 2 have lost the match before the match begins.

CQ 3 This player has made it past the first two stages and begins the match thinking he can win. He is hitting the ball fairly well and his opponent has made several mistakes during the warm-up that give him renewed courage.

This guy isn't as good as he looks, can take him the player says to himself Unfortunately, players at this level lose this feeling of confidence (which mostly is a bluff) as soon as they lose a game which usually is the first game of the match CQ 4 At this level, the player actually can lose a game without getting discouraged, although she must take deep breaths and continue to repeat mantras to herself between points. But then two things happen at about the same time, which cause her game and her psyche to unravel. She double faults and also misses one or two easy shots (probably her favorite shots) the ones she never misses. All she can think about are those 'sitters' and that double fault at 30-40.

The mantras and deep breathing are forgotten, along with every good shot she hit before the silly mistakes started to creep into her game. Chalk up a win for her opponent.

CQ5

The player at this level has been cruising along feeling good about his game, hitting well and totally oblivious to the fact that his opponent hasn't removed his warm-up suit.

He has gotten past the lost games, his own double faults (several by this time) and the 13 or 14 'sitters' he has missed. The match is progressing nicely until he loses his own serve. At this point he begins to feel discouraged and his confidence is shaken.

'Good grief! A service break! There goes my game, he thinks. My whole game is built

on my serve, when that goes 'm lost." Needless to say, he has lost.

CQ 6 The player at this level is fairly successful.

She has a certain amount of confidence and doesn't get discouraged easily. She wins about half the time and she's hard to beat if she gets ahead She becomes discouraged when her opponent has a hot streak and hits several of her best shots back, or her concentration starts to wander. She was in control of the match until this happened. Then, she loses her concentration and begins to worry about her opponent, especially if her opponent takes the lead in the match, nstead of changing her game, or simply trying to stay in the match until her opponent cools off and/or her own concentration is restored, her game starts to fall apart and it's the beginning of the end.

CQ7

This is closer to the level of a serious tennis player. This player wins a fairly high percentage of the games he plays and many of his matches. It's hard for him to become discouraged. The fancy clothing and large equipment bag have no effect on this player.

He isn't shaken by a couple of double faults, silly mistakes, or even losing his serve. For

the most part, he is able to keep his mind focused on the task at hand. The turning point occurs when he loses the first set and his opponent is playing well. All he can think about is the score, all those opportunities, and his opponent's extraordinary luck.

Unless his opponent breaks his leg or has a heart attack, it's all over except for the shouting.

CQ8 The player with a CQ of eight is a good player. She hangs tough and doesn't seem to get ruffled. This player even can stand to lose the first set without getting discouraged.

But her confidence has been shaken, and the competition is over if her opponent continues to play well and she begins to make silly mistakes or loses her serve again.

If she cannot turn things around within a game or two of the second set, she starts to panic and berate herself. Her body language is a dead giveaway. Her legs are black and blue from self-inflicted bruises, she constantly mutters to herself and alternately stares at the court and her racquet in disbelief. She seems to want to find a place to hide. She and her opponent both know who will win this match.

CQ9 This serious tennis player wins most of his matches and is able to come back from a set down, even if he's not playing especially well or his opponent is playing superbly. He simply doesn't get discouraged at least not until his opponent is serving for the match. The thing that separates the player with a CQ of nine and a player with a CQ of 10 is the moment in the match, somewhere near the end, where the nine player will become discouraged, in spite of himself When this happens, he begins to think negatively about himself and his game and the task ahead seems impossible. 'If only he thinks. It's at this point that a player with a CQ of 10 will raise his game. For this player, however, it's over.

CQ 10 This player simply never gives up and never becomes discouraged. If her opponent is playing well or hitting incredible shots, she figures it's just dumb luck and that she will hang in there until her opponent's luck runs out. The player with a CQ of 10 feels good about herself and her game, keeps her mind focused, and knows that as long as she's on the court, she has a chance to win the match, no matter what the score.

Accentuate the positive Confidence in one's skills is essential to winning in tennis, and a player remains confident by not becoming discouraged. Negative thinking feeds and grows on feelings of

d scouragement When players are discouraged, the task at hand seems impossible. They look back with regret, instead of looking ahead; they play it safe nstead of taking chances. Players begin to feel sorry for themselves and worry about the score, instead of thinking about ways to beat the opponent. They start to wish they were somewhere else.

Winners do not look back, they look ahead. They don't replay the last point, they play the next point. What's done is done.

They relish the challenge and hate to lose.

They love the game and feel good about themselves. Winners concentrate on the point as it is played; in between points, they look ahead to think of ways to win, no matter how well their opponents are playing. They know that the next shot could turn the match around.

No matter what your current CQ happens to be (everyone can locate themselves somewhere on this scale), it can be improved by adopting a positive, forward-looking attitude.

Don't get discouraged, no matter how desperate the situation appears. Keep in mind that as long as you are on the court, you can win the match. ®

USPTA • Tennis: Europe has announced that several USPTA professionals will travel throughout Europe to instruct groups of juniors competing in tournaments on red clay courts.

USPTA pros involved in the program are Dan Holden, Edwardsville, III. Nikki LaVoi, Hopkins, M nn Nate Thompson, Brookings, S.D. and Mark Fairchild, Huntington, nd Tennis: Europe was started in 1973 by Martin Vinokur, Ph.D., USPTA pro and former New York state scholastic tennis coordinator. Greg Anderson, also a USPTA pro, and Vinokur will be the chief supervisors of the European tennis tours.

• Paula Scheb, USPTA pro and vice president of the USPTA Florida Division, was named division Pro of the Year at the divisional convention She also received the national USTA-USPTA Volunteer of the Year award. Scheb is the tennis director at Cypress Lake Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla.

• USPTA pro David J. Contois has been named head tennis teaching professional at the Lakeridge Resort Community n Torrington, Conn. Under his direction, the resort's tennis programs will be expanded to include a new junior tennis academy. Contois also is the resident head pro at Pinewoods Health & Racquet Club in Torrington.

• The Racquets for Kids Clinic, sponsored by the Greensboro (N .C.) Tennis Association, Wilson Sporting Goods and Omega Sporting Goods, involved several USPTA professionals. The free clinic, held June 5 at

The children participated in a twohour tennis clinic and received a free racquet, tennis balls and refreshments. Participating USPTA pros included Kim Dillard, Andy Smith, Jim Winstead and Steve MacDermut. Dillard and MacDermut are co-presidents of the Greensboro Tennis Association.

MacDermut is the new owner of the Pinetop World Tennis and Swim Club.

Dillard, MacDermut, Smith, and Penelope Moor also serve as trainers for the Greensboro USTA Local Excellence Training Program, which began in May. The purpose of the program s to improve players' abilities (continued on page 24)

Miscellany • Sports for Understanding (SFU) International Exchange is seeking tennis coaches to lead teams overseas during the summer of 1994.
