The Battleships of the Iowa Class A Design and Operational History

BY PHILIPPE CARESSE TRANSLATED BY BRUCE TAYLOR

The four battleships of the Iowa class, the crowning achievement of U.S. battleship construction, had exceptionally long careers and each left a distinctive mark not only on the U.S. Navy but on naval history at large. Built as the ultimate American battleship and designed to engage the major units of the Japanese and German fleets, the vessels were commissioned in the closing stages of World War II, the beginning of half a century of service during which individual units saw action in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Lebanese Civil War, and finally the Persian Gulf War. As such, these ships are symbolic of the primacy of U.S. seapower during the Cold War. The preservation of all four members of this mighty class as museums is testament not only to their enduring fascination for successive generations of Americans, but also to the immense technical, financial, military, and political resources wielded by the United States during the second half of the twentieth century. PHILIPPE CARESSE was born into a naval family in 1964 and joined the French Navy

in 1982, serving in the destroyer d’Estrées. He has published an extensive range of ship monographs on the French, German, U.S., and Japanese navies from the latenineteenth century to World War II, and is coauthor with John Jordan of French Battleships of World War One and French Armoured Cruisers. He is the harbormaster of a marina on the Côte d’Azur.

• The ultimate reference work on America’s greatest battleship class • A fitting tribute to a class of vessels which has been preserved in its entirety • Unprecedented level of detail on the specifications and careers of all four vessels

EDITED BY THE KURE MARITIME MUSEUM AND KAZUSHIGE TODAKA; TRANSLATED BY ROBERT D. ELDRIDGE

Originally published in Japan in 2005, each album in the Japanese Naval Warship photo album series contains official photographs taken by the Kure Maritime Museum, as well as those taken by private individuals. These pictorial records document the main types of Japanese vessels, from battleships to submarines, based on the best images from Shizuo Fukui, a former Imperial Japanese Navy commander and technician. These photos include the ones Fukui began collecting as a young boy and continued to do after he began work as a naval shipbuilder, and those that he was given in order to complete a photographic history of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s ships. The latter included images gathered by Nagamura Kiyoshi, a shipbuilder who proactively collected photos, and from the collection of machinist Amari Yoshiyuki. Moreover, with the help of shipbuilder Makino Shigeru, among others, Fukui was able to continue gathering photographs and other items throughout the postwar period. Thus, it is not an exaggeration to say that Fukui dedicated his entire life to this work. These images are especially valuable because of the widespread destruction of official documents at the end of the war. THE KURE MARITIME MUSEUM (also known as the Yamato Museum) is located in Kure

Six Victories

BY VINCENT P. O’HARA

North Africa, Malta, and the Mediterranean Convoy War, November 1941–March 1942 Six Victories examines one of the most interesting and instructive naval campaigns of World War II: the war on traffic in the Mediterranean during the fall and winter of 1941–42. It is a cautionary tale of how sea power was practiced, and how it shifted 180 degrees overnight. Based on British and Italian archival sources, the book emphasizes strategic context, the role of intelligence, and the campaign’s logistics. In October 1941 the British Admiralty based a surface strike force in Malta to attack Axis sea lanes between Italy and Africa. Aided by Ultra intelligence, submarines, and bombers based in Malta, this force dominated the Central Mediterranean. From the end of October through the middle of December 1941, less than a third of the supplies shipped from Italian ports arrived in Libya. Shortages of ammunition and fuel finally compelled the Afrika Korps to retreat four hundred miles. Then, in the span of thirty hours, this all changed. First, Italian naval forces broke the blockade by fighting through a major convoy that arrived in time to blunt the British advance; next, the strike force plowed into a minefield laid by Italian cruisers; and finally, in a daring attack, Italian commandos crippled the Mediterranean Fleet’s battleships in port. The swing in fortune was immediate and dramatic. Six Victories breaks new ground in the historiography of World War II. A compelling story, it relates lessons that are relevant today and should be required reading for all who practice the art of power at sea and for those who want to understand the intricate and interrelated factors that are the foundations of military success. VINCENT P. O’HARA is an independent scholar and the author of eleven works, most

recently Torch and Clash of Fleets. He holds a history degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and lives in Chula Vista, California.

• Extensive use of non-English language archival sources • Breaks new ground on how Ultra intelligence affected the Mediterranean campaign • Provides valuable lessons on how militaries are successful and lessons on the fragility of success

Churchill’s Phoney War

BY GRAHAM T. CLEWS

A Study in Folly and Frustration Given the dearth of scholarship on the Phoney War, this book examines the early months of World War II when Winston Churchill’s ability to lead Britain in the fight against the Nazis was tested. Graham T. Clews explores how Churchill, as First Lord of the Admiralty, proposed to fight this new world war, with particular attention given to his attempts to impel the Royal Navy, the British War Cabinet, and the French toward a more aggressive prosecution of the conflict. This is no mere retelling of events but a deep analysis of the decision-making process and Churchill’s unique involvement in it. This book shares extensive new insights into well-trodden territory and original analysis of the unexplored, with each chapter offering material that challenges conventional wisdom. Clews reassesses several important issues of the Phoney War period including: Churchill’s involvement in the anti-U-boat campaign; his responsibility for the failures of the Norwegian Campaign; his attitude toward Britain’s aerial bombing campaign and the notion of his unfettered “bulldog” spirit; his relationship with Neville Chamberlain; and his succession to the premiership. A man of considerable strengths and many shortcomings, the Churchill that emerges in Clews’ portrayal is dynamic and complicated. Churchill’s Phoney War adds a wellbalanced and much-needed history of the Phoney War while scrupulously examining Churchill’s successes and failures. SERIES: STUDIES IN NAVAL HISTORY AND SEA POWER

“They’re Killing My Boys!” The History of Hickam Field and the Attacks of 7 December 1941

BY J. MICHAEL WENGER, ROBERT J. CRESSMAN, AND JOHN F. DI VIRGILIO

“They’re Killing My Boys!” is a detailed combat narrative of the 7 December 1941 Japanese attacks on Hickam Field—then one of two major U.S. Army airfields on the island of O’ahu. Since the field served as a base for long-range bombers, the Japanese military desired to put Hickam out of action to prevent U.S. forces from searching for and attacking their carrier force. Typically, military historians tend to focus on the devastation sustained by the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. Although the loss of life at Hickam Field was less than that sustained by the Pacific Fleet, the attacks on the former location caused destruction and mayhem that was disastrous and wrenching. This work describes actions in the air and on the ground at the deepest practical personal and tactical levels, from both the American and Japanese perspectives. Such a synthesis is possible only by pursuing every conceivable source of American documents, reminiscences, interviews, and photographs. This accumulation of data and information makes possible an intricate and highly integrated story that is unparalleled. The interwoven nature of the narratives of both sides provides a deep understanding of the events at Hickam Field that has been impossible to present heretofore. MILITARY HISTORIAN J. MICHAEL WENGER has co-written eleven books, as well as numerous journal articles, newspaper features, and reviews. His main interest is Japanese carrier aviation and doctrine in World War II. He lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Once Upon a Time in France

WRITTEN BY FABIEN NURY; DRAWN BY SYLVAIN VALLÉE COLORED BY DELF; TRANSLATED BY IVANKA HAHNENBERGER; LETTERED BY HALEY ROSE-LYON

Based on a true story, Once Upon a Time in France follows the life of Joseph Joanovici, a Romanian Jew who immigrated to France in the 1920s and became one of the richest men in Europe as a scrap-metal magnate. For some, he was a villain. For others, a hero. As Germany occupies France, Mr. Joseph thinks his influence can keep his family safe, but he soon finds that the only way to stay one step ahead of the Nazis is to keep his friends close and his enemies closer. Though he plays both sides of the fence as a Nazi collaborator and French resistant, a tangled web of interests forms around him that proves it will take a lot more than money to pay for the survival of his family. An international bestseller with over 1 million copies sold, the French series Once Upon a Time in France, collected here in one omnibus edition, has won the BDGest’Arts Best Scenario Award, BDGest’Arts Album of the Year, and Angoulême International Comics Festival Best Series Award, among many others. FABIEN NURY has scripted more than fifteen comics series, including Once Upon a Time in France, which won the Best Series Award at the Angoulême Comics Festival and The Death of Stalin, which was adapted to the film with Steve Buscemi. Nury is also a television screenwriter and has created the Guyane TV series. SYLVAIN VALLÉE graduated from the Saint-Luc School of Brussels. He started as a

cartoonist and a freelance illustrator in advertising. He published his first comic book with Glénat at age 25 and has worked on a dozen series. “To portray Joseph Joanovici in a X graphic novel is to plunge into Xthe dark alleys of World War II. The X Gestapo, collaborators, inhuman sufferings, the Resistance—Joseph X Joanovici combined a little of it X all, blended into a dark, maleficent alchemy. . . . The story is breathtaking, and readers [are] riveted by the force of Fabien Nury’s script and the intensity of Sylvain Vallée’s graphics.” — JEAN-PHILIPPE LEFEVRE, Coup de Coeur BD

Smedley

BY JEFF MCCOMSEY

Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler is one of the most decorated Marines of all time and is a legend among the Corps. Coming from a background of privilege, Butler became a Marine to prove his worth. Through conflicts like the Philippine-American War, the Boxer Rebellion, the Banana Wars, and the War to End All Wars, he helped define what the Marine Corps is today. Smedley begins in the summer of 1932. Butler is retired from the Marines and has lost his bid to be a Pennsylvania senator. When he is invited to speak at the Bonus Army encampment in Washington D.C., he arrives early to mingle with the other veterans, who press him for stories about his legendary exploits. How did he win his Medals of Honor? What was it like in China? Smedley is a man in his element as he recalls his toughest scrapes to an eager audience of World War I veterans, who we discover have a few war stories of their own. JEFF MCCOMSEY is an American writer/illustrator working in comics for the past ten

years. He is also editor in chief of the New York Times best selling historical zombie anthology FUBAR, now into its sixth volume. Jeff and his family reside in the quaintly hip city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he also teaches the occasional class at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design.

Rear Admiral Herbert V. Wiley A Career in Airships and Battleships BY M. ERNEST MARSHALL

September 2019 352 pp. | 6 x 9 | 27 b/w illustrations, 1 map | Hardcover | ISBN: 978-1-68247-317-7 $39.95* | Member: $23.97 *Short Discount Textbook BIOGRAPHY & MEMOIRS

This book is simultaneously a biography of Rear Adm. Herbert V. Wiley and a history of the U.S. Navy’s lighter-than-air (LTA) program. As tensions rose between Japan and the United States over control of East Asia and the Pacific Ocean, the prospects of war between the two nations increased. The Navy tracked Germany’s use of zeppelins during World War I and saw an aircraft with the potential to conduct long-range reconnaissance over the oceans—something that could not be achieved by airplanes or surface ships. While rapid progress was being made in manned flight, it was still young enough that the future of LTA vs. HTA (heavier-than-air) flight was unknown. At the time, airships had a much greater range than airplanes. In its history, the Navy had four great airships—the USS Shenandoah, the USS Los Angeles, the USS Akron, and the USS Macon. Wiley served on all four of these vessels and the history of each is covered through his career. Three of the airships met with disaster and Wiley survived the crash of two of them. Through an examination of the records of the Navy’s Courts of Inquiry, M. Ernest Marshall explores in detail the events leading to the crashes. M. ERNEST MARSHALL graduated from the University of Virginia College of Arts & Sciences and the School of Medicine. He is a retired professor of medicine who devotes his time to historical research and writing. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, with his wife, Lisa. SERIES: HISTORY OF MILITARY AVIATION

From Kites to Cold War The Evolution of Manned Airborne Reconnaissance BY TYLER MORTON From Kites to Cold War tells the story of the evolution of manned airborne reconnaissance. Long a desire of military commanders, the ability to see the terrain ahead and gain foreknowledge of enemy intent was realized when Chinese airmen mounted kites to surveil their surroundings. Kite technology was slow to spread, and by the late nineteenth century European nations had developed the balloon and airship to conduct this mission.

8

November 2019

By 1918, it was obvious that the airplane had become the reconnaissance platform of the future. Used successfully by many nations during the Great War, aircraft technology and capability experienced its most rapid evolutionary period during World War II. Entering the war with just basic airborne imagery capabilities, by V-E and V-J days, air power pioneers greatly improved imagery collection and developed sophisticated airborne signals intelligence collection capabilities. The United States and other nations put these capabilities to use as the Cold War immediately followed. Flying near the periphery of and sometimes directly over the Soviet Union, airborne reconnaissance provided the intelligence necessary to stay one step ahead of the Soviets throughout the Cold War.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf at 75 A Retrospective EDITED BY THOMAS J. CUTLER

Often appropriately described as the “greatest naval battle in history,” the battle of Leyte Gulf (23-26 October 1944) was actually a series of battles in which both sides exhibited courage and resourcefulness yet suffered from confusion born of poorly conceived command relationships and ineffective communications. Marked by awe-inspiring heroism, failed intelligence, brilliant deception, flawed strategy, effective tactical planning, great controversies, and a host of lessons learned, it involved hundreds of ships, included nearly 200,000 participants, spanned more than 100,000 square miles, and resulted in the deaths of thousands of sailors from both sides. Every facet of naval warfare was involved—air, surface, subsurface, amphibious, and—with the introduction of the kamikaze—a forerunner of guided missiles. Ten original essays by eminent historians take new looks at various aspects of this rich history, providing fresh insight and offering different perspectives that will answer some old questions and likely pose new ones. This retrospective collection is further enhanced by a collection of articles culled from the rich archive of the Naval Institute’s Proceedings and Naval History magazines that have long sustained the debates and the lessons learned from this important historical event. THOMAS J. CUTLER is a former gunner’s mate second class and retired lieutenant

commander who has been serving the U.S. Navy in various capacities for more than fifty years. He currently holds the U.S. Naval Institute’s Gordon England Chair of Professional Naval Literature and is a Fleet Professor of Strategy and Policy with the Naval War College. He is the author of many articles and books, including A Sailor’s History of the U.S. Navy and several editions of The Bluejacket’s Manual.

Dorwart’s History of the Office of Naval Intelligence, 1865–1945

BY JEFFERY M. DORWART INTRODUCTION BY REAR ADM. THOMAS A. BROOKS, USN (RET.)

This is the biography of the founding in 1882 and operation through two world wars of America’s first permanent intelligence agency, the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI). Jeffery M. Dorwart shows how and why a tiny, late nineteenth century U.S. Navy bureau created to collect information about foreign warship design became a complex and sometimes troubled domestic and worldwide intelligence agency. More significantly, this history of ONI demonstrates how the founders and first generations of U.S. naval officers trained to man warships at sea confronted what seemed an inherent dilemma in new missions that interfered with providing technical and operational information to their navy. Dorwart explains the forces that created this dilemma and how ONI officers responded in different ways to their intelligence mission. This history recounts how from the very beginning ONI duty during the last decades of the nineteenth century seemed conflicting. To some, the new assignment of collecting and collating data for the U.S. to build a “New Navy” of steel and steam powered warships armed with the latest rifled ordnance was exciting. Other naval officers viewed appointment to this small office as a monotonous dead-end assignment endangering their careers as shipboard operators. This book is essential reading for understanding the past and future of naval intelligence.

How the Few Became the Proud Crafting the Marine Corps Mystique, 1874–1918 BY HEATHER VENABLE For more than half of its existence, members of the Marine Corps largely self-identified as soldiers. It did not yet mean something distinct to be a Marine, either to themselves or to the public at large. As neither a land-based organization like the Army nor an entirely sea-based one like the Navy, the Corps’ missions overlapped with both institutions. This work argues that the Marine Corps could not and would not settle on a mission, and therefore it turned to an image to ensure its institutional survival. The process by which a maligned group of nineteenth-century naval policemen began to consider themselves to be elite warriors benefited from the active engagement of Marine officers with the Corps’ historical record as justification for its very being. Rather than look forward and actively seek out a mission that could secure their existence, late nineteenth-century Marines looked backward and embraced the past. They began to justify their existence by invoking their institutional traditions, their many martial engagements, and their claim to be the nation’s oldest and proudest military institution. This led them to celebrate themselves as superior to soldiers and sailors. Although there are countless works on this hallowed fighting force, How the Few Became the Proud is the first to explore how the Marine Corps crafted such powerful myths. HEATHER VENABLE is an assistant professor of military and security studies in the

Department of Airpower at the United States Air Force’s Air Command and Staff College. As a visiting professor at the U.S. Naval Academy, she taught naval and Marine Corps history. She received her PhD in military history from Duke University.

SERIES: TRANSFORMING WAR

Hot Spot of Invention Charles Stark Draper, MIT, and the Development of Inertial Guidance and Navigation BY THOMAS WILDENBERG Charles Stark Draper, often referred to as “The Father of Inertial Navigation,” was the moving force behind the development of the floated gyroscope in the United States. Engineer, scientist, inventor, inspiring teacher, and dynamic leader, Draper founded the laboratory that brought inertial navigation to fruition for operational use in submarines, aircraft, and space vehicles. These factors alone make him worthy of study. But Draper also created and ran the famous laboratory, now bearing his name, that helped make MIT into one of the nation’s leading centers for government research. The story of his life and accomplishments cannot be separated from those of the Instrumentation Laboratory, which are one and the same. Thus, this biography of Charles Stark “Doc” Draper, is also a chronological accounting of the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory and its contributions to the nation. “Vincere!” The Italian Royal Army’s Counterinsurgency Operations in Africa, 1922–1940 BY FEDERICA SAINI FASANOTTI FOREWORD BY GEN. JOHN R. ALLEN, USMC (RET.)

Based on ten years of study in the Italian archives and on the ground, “Vincere!” examines a little-known topic: the counterinsurgency operations carried out by the Italian Royal Army in Libya and Ethiopia from 1922 to 1940.

Italian forces faced local populations while conducting counterinsurgency (COIN) operations in what was, for them, a new theater of war. In Libya, the rebellion was quelled in the space of ten years, at an admittedly high price for the regional forces. In Ethiopia, where COIN operations were interrupted by World War II, the available data suggests that military actions, accompanied by a more responsible policy toward the population, would have eventually defeated the insurgency. The use of air power in Ethiopia made a huge difference, and its lessons were learned long before the French experience in Algeria. The Italians waged counterinsurgency operations over twenty years in two geographically separate theaters, and in two very different operational environments. Much can be learned from these different experiences. FEDERICA SAINI FASANOTTI graduated in contemporary history with honors and then gained

a PhD at the University of Milan. She is a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. She has published five books on military history and her many essays and articles have appeared in a number of journals and historical magazines.

I Was Chaplain on the Franklin BY FATHER JOSEPH T. O’CALLAHAN, S. J. “Sudden death was everywhere . . .” On the morning of 19 March 1945, about fifty miles off the coast of Japan, the aircraft carrier USS Franklin (CV 13) was attacked by Japanese aircraft. Two heavy bombs penetrated the hangar deck, killing everyone inside. The planes on the flight deck were knocked into the air, their whirling propellers smashing gas tanks which spilled 17,000 gallons of gasoline. Fires raged from stem to stern on three decks. For four interminable hours, explosions rocked the Franklin. All communications, fire mains, and power were gone. Into the thick of the choking smoke and fury came a hero with a white cross on his helmet. “Padre” to the Catholic, “Rabbi Joe” to the Jewish boys, Chaplain O’Callahan was “Father” to everyone on board. Father Joseph O’Callahan tells of his own experiences, recapturing the perilous and heroic drama of the Franklin. He leads you through blazing decks to observe gallant engineers and pharmacists, as doctors and stewards man the battle stations.

Father O’Callahan won the only Congressional Medal of Honor ever awarded a Navy chaplain. His inspiring account of the Franklin’s travail is more than a story of heroism, war, and men—it is a powerful and unforgettable story of faith. REV. JOSEPH T. O’CALLAHAN (1905–1964) was a Jesuit priest. He served in the U.S. Navy as a chaplain from 1940 to 1946. Following his retirement with the rank of captain, he returned to the College of the Holy Cross to teach philosophy. The USS O’Callahan was named in his honor. A Brief Guide to Maritime Strategy BY JAMES R. HOLMES A Brief Guide to Maritime Strategy is a deliberately compact introductory work aimed at junior seafarers, those who make decisions affecting the sea services, and those who educate seafarers and policy-makers. It introduces readers to the main theoretical ideas that shape how statesmen and commanders make and execute maritime strategy in times of peace and war. Following in the spirit of Bernard Brodie’s Layman’s Guide to Naval Strategy, a World War II–era book whose title makes its purpose plain, it will be a companion volume to such works as Geoffrey Till’s Seapower and Wayne Hughes’s Fleet Tactics and Naval Operations, the classic treatise that explains how to handle navies in fleet actions. It takes the mystery out of maritime strategy and will help the next generation think about strategy. JAMES R. HOLMES is J. C. Wylie Chair of Maritime Strategy at the Naval War College and a former U.S. Navy engineering and gunnery officer. He served on the faculty of the University of Georgia School of Public and International Affairs. He lives in Barrington, Rhode Island.

The Pacific War Remembered: An Oral History Collection

BY JOHN T. MASON JR.

In this remarkable oral history collection, thirty-three participants in the turbulent epic that began with the day of infamy at Pearl Harbor and ended with the signing of the surrender documents in Tokyo Harbor tell their stories. Their remembrances of heartbreak, frustration, heroism, hope, and triumph were collected over a period of twenty-five years by John T. Mason Jr. These recollections reveal perspectives and facts not included in traditional works of history. Each selection, introduced with a preface that places it in the context of the Pacific War, takes the reader behind the scenes to present the personal, untold stories of naval history. Included are Adm. William S. Sullivan’s account of the problems involved in clearing Manila Harbor of some five-hundred wrecked vessels left by the departing Japanese, and Adm. Thomas C. Kinkaid’s description of the communications breakdown at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. There are also the very personal recollections of humor and horror told by the unknown actors in the war: the hospital corpsman, the coxswain, and the machinist’s mate. Originally published in 1986, this volume is an unusual and lasting tribute to the ingenuity and teamwork demonstrated by America’s forces in the Pacific as well as a celebration of the human spirit. JOHN T. MASON JR. (1909–1998) was a trained historian with an advanced degree

“Mightily absorbing . . . There is candor in this book, and humor and an exhilarating sense, once common to us but now strange, that Americans who fought that war could do just about anything, and without getting wordy or pretentious about it or themselves.”

from George Washington University. He was also an Episcopal priest and graduate of General Theological Seminary. From 1940 to the end of World War II, he served with the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington, D.C. From 1960 to 1969, he was associated with the oral history research office of Columbia University under the guidance of the noted American historian Allan Nevins. In 1969, Mason established an oral history program at the U.S. Naval Institute, and it soon led to one of the most extensive collections of naval oral history transcripts in the country. In 1982, he retired as director of the Naval Institute Oral History Program, which continues to carry on his legacy today.

From the Cold War to ISIL One Marine’s Journey BY BRIG. GEN. JASON Q. BOHM, USMC The fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the former Soviet Union forced America’s armed forces to redefine themselves and codify their role as a key element of national power. New threats and emerging technologies changed the very character of war and demanded new strategies and an adaptable military to address them. Jason Q. Bohm began his service to our nation as a Marine at the start of this tumultuous era. He takes the reader on a journey from the turbulent times at the end of the Cold War through the current fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Bohm provides candid and useful historical background as, through a series of personal vignettes and rich operational experience, he describes how Marines translated strategic and operational objectives into tactical actions. In this unique way, he not only tells his story but that of the Marine Corps, and provides an invaluable look at the challenging times confronting Marines. BRIG. GEN. JASON Q. BOHM, USMC, an infantryman by trade, has served in many

command and staff positions in his nearly thirty years of service. Bohm commanded at every level from platoon to Marine Air Ground Task Force and has served in key staff positions including the Joint Staff and Director of the Expeditionary Warfare School.

Adopting Mission Command Developing Leaders for a Superior Command Culture BY DONALD E. VANDERGRIFF In September 2010, James G. Pierce, a retired U.S. Army colonel with the Strategic Studies Institute at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, published a study on Army organizational culture. Pierce postulated that “the ability of a professional organization to develop future leaders in a manner that perpetuates readiness to cope with future environmental and internal uncertainty depends on organizational culture.” He found that today’s U.S. Army leadership “may be inadequately prepared to lead the profession toward future success.” The need to prepare for future success dovetails with the use of the concepts of mission command. This book offers up a set of recommendations, based on those mission command concepts, for adopting a superior command culture through education and training. Donald E. Vandergriff believes that by implementing these recommendations across the Army, other necessary and long-awaited reforms will take place. DONALD E. VANDERGRIFF is an expert on mission command, maneuver warfare, and leader development using the latest in learning methodologies. A noted speaker, award-winning author, and teacher, Vandergriff is also the author or editor of six books and over one-hundred articles. Battle of Midway America’s Decisive Strike in the Pacific in WWII BY JOHN GREHAN Aware of the sensitivity of the Americans toward Hawaii after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto believed that if he attacked there again, the U.S. commander, Admiral Chester Nimitz, would be certain to commit all his strength to its defense. For his attack, Yamamoto selected the Naval Air Station on the Midway Atoll which was beyond the range of most U.S. land-based aircraft. Yamamoto launched his strike on 4 June 1942, but the United States had intercepted and deciphered Japanese signals and Nimitz, with three aircraft carriers, knew exactly Yamamoto’s exact plans. Yamamoto had hoped to draw the U.S. carriers into his trap but instead, he sailed into an ambush. The four-day battle resulted in the loss of four Japanese aircraft carriers, the U.S. Navy losing only one. The Japanese were never able to recover from these losses, and it was the Americans who were able to take control of the Pacific. The Battle of Midway, unquestionably, marked the turning point in the war against Japan. JOHN GREHAN has written, edited, or contributed to more than three-hundred books

and magazine articles covering a wide span of military history from the Iron Age to the recent conflict in Afghanistan.

British Naval Weapons of World War Two The John Lambert Collection, Volume II: Escort and Minesweeper Weapons EDITED AND INTRODUCED BY NORMAN FRIEDMAN John Lambert was a renowned naval draftsman, whose plans were highly valued for their accuracy and detail by model makers and enthusiasts. By the time of his death in 2016, Lambert had produced over 850 sheets of drawings, many of which have never been published. Following the first volume on destroyer armament, this book covers all such weapons carried by the various types of British escorts and minesweepers of this era, including the “passive” elements like sweeping gear, decoys, and electronics.

British Submarines in Two World Wars BY NORMAN FRIEDMAN Although the Royal Navy did not invent the submarine, Norman Friedman’s new book demonstrates how innovative the British were in their submarine design— more so than most realize. Royal Navy submarines performed well in combat in both world wars, and often in unheralded ways. By 1914, Britain had the largest submarine fleet in the world and by the end of World War I some of the largest and most unusual of all submarines—whose origins and designs are all detailed in this new book. Heavily illustrated with photos and original plans, this volume, incorporating so much original analysis, will be eagerly awaited by naval historians and enthusiasts. British Town Class Cruisers Southampton and Belfast Classes: Design, Development and Performance BY CONRAD WATERS Entering service between 1937 and 1939, the ten British “Town” class cruisers were the most modern vessels of their type in the Royal Navy when World War II began. Built in response to large 6-inch gunned cruisers in the U.S. and Japanese navies and primarily designed for the defense of trade, they saw arduous service in a wide range of roles, playing a decisive part in victories such as the Battle of the Barents Sea and the destruction of the German Navy’s Scharnhorst at the North Cape. The cost was heavy: four of the ships were lost and the other six all survived heavy damage, in some cases on more than one occasion. In this major study, Conrad Waters makes extensive use of archive material to provide a technical evaluation of the “Town” class design and its subsequent performance. He outlines the class’ origins in the context of interwar cruiser policy, explains the design and construction process, and describes the characteristics of the resulting ships and how these were adopted in the light of wartime developments. Heavily illustrated with contemporary photographs and drawings by A. D. Baker III, John Jordan, and George Richardson, British Town Class Cruisers provides a definitive reference to one of the Royal Navy’s most important World War II warship designs. CONRAD WATERS, a barrister by training and a banker by profession, has had a lifelong

Battlecruiser Repulse Detailed in the Original Builders’ Plans BY JOHN ROBERTS The technical details of British warships were recorded in a set of plans produced by the builders on completion of every ship. Known as the “as fitted” general arrangements, these drawings represented the exact appearance and fitting of the ship as it entered service. Intended to provide a permanent reference for the Admiralty and the dockyards, these highly detailed plans were drawn with exquisite skill in multicolored inks and washes that represent the acme of the draftsman’s art. Today they form part of the incomparable collection of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, which is using the latest scanning technology to make digital copies of the highest quality. This book is one of a series based entirely on these drafts which depict famous warships in an unprecedented degree of detail. The subject of this volume was one of the last battlecruisers, elegant ships that combined a powerful armament with high speed but much criticized for their light protection. Repulse and her sister Renown were the only capital ships given sufficient priority to be designed, built, and completed during the course of World War I and substantial sums were spent on large-scale reconstruction during the 1930s. Both of these phases of the ship’s life are fully documented in two separate sets of plans, which allows this novel form of anatomy to cover the whole life of the ship.

French Armoured Cruisers 1887–1932 BY JOHN JORDAN AND PHILIPPE CARESSE Of all the threats faced by the Royal Navy during the first years of the twentieth century, the one which stood out was the risk to Britain’s sea lines of communication posed by France’s armored cruisers. Fast, well-armed, and well-protected, these ships could have evaded any attempted blockade of the French ports and, supported by a worldwide network of overseas bases, could potentially have caused havoc on the trade routes.

The primary focus of the book is on the technical characteristics of the ships. Detailed and labeled drawings based on the official plans are provided by John Jordan, and each individual class of ship is illustrated by photographs from the extensive personal collection of Philippe Caresse. The technical section is followed by a history in two parts, covering the Great War (1914–18) and the postwar years, during which the surviving ships saw extensive deployment as “station” cruisers overseas and as training ships. This is the most comprehensive account published in English or in French and is destined to be the standard reference for many years to come. JOHN JORDAN is the editor of the Warship annual and a lifelong student of French naval

history. He is the coauthor of French Battleships, French Cruisers, and French Destroyers. PHILIPPE CARESSE, is a leading authority on late-nineteenth-century French warships. He is the author of the forthcoming The Battleships of the Iowa Class.

Fighting the Great War at Sea Strategy, Tactics and Technology BY NORMAN FRIEDMAN While the overriding image of World War I is of the bloody stalemate on the Western Front, the overall shape of the war arose out of its maritime character. It was essentially a struggle about access to worldwide resources, most clearly seen in Germany’s desperate attempts to counter the American industrial threat, which ultimately drew the United States into the war. This radical new book concentrates on the way in which each side tried to use or deny the sea to the other, and in so doing describes rapid wartime changes not only in ship and weapons technology but also in the way naval warfare was envisaged and fought. Melding strategic, technical, and tactical aspects, Friedman approaches World War I from a fresh perspective and demonstrates how its perceived lessons dominated the way navies prepared for World War II. Eagles Over the Sea Luftwaffe Maritime Operations, 1935–1942 BY LAWRENCE PATERSON The arduous development of a dedicated naval air arm for Germany’s resurgent military was fraught with the kind of fierce interservice rivalry that was rife throughout the turbulent history of the Third Reich. However, almost despite the odds, a small dedicated maritime strike force was assembled, germinating during the Spanish Civil War before being committed to action from the first days of the invasion of Poland. Concurrently, the operational Luftwaffe developed its own maritime units that would eventually subsume all of the Kriegsmarine-controlled formations as the war years progressed. Eagles Over the Sea offers an in-depth study of all the Luftwaffe maritime operations. The story of Luftwaffe maritime operations has frequently been written about in fragmentary terms, delineating between the planned naval air arm operating under Kriegsmarine direction and the “operational Luftwaffe.” Each branch of service—and even aircraft type—has usually been studied in isolation. This book, however, broadens the lens to study the development of German naval aircraft as a whole. Heavily illustrated throughout, this detailed and exciting operational history will be of huge appeal to both naval and aviation historians and enthusiasts. LAWRENCE PATERSON has spent many years researching aspects of German naval operations

and has written more than ten books on various aspects of the Kriegsmarine, including Schnellboote and, most recently, Hitler’s Forgotten Flotillas.

Glasgow Museums’ The Ship Models A History and Complete Illustrated Catalogue BY EMILY MALCOLM This publication will be the first full catalog of Glasgow Museums’ internationally important collection of ship models. Almost all of the 676 models, which range from elegant cruise liners to humble Clyde puffers, and from simple half-hull design models to magnificent display models, were produced by Clyde shipyards or Glasgow-based ship owners. It is the representation of models from such a distinct geographical area, together with the quality of the models, which makes this collection so exceptional. As well as general chapters about the collection, each of the 676 models has a description and color photograph. Some of the most famous ships launched on the Clyde are represented, such as RMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Hood, as well models of historically significant vessels such as the first European passenger steamer Comet and the world’s first commercial turbinepowered vessel King Edward. A stunning collection of photographs complements newly researched and in-depth chapters. The book will give readers worldwide a chance to see images of the models, a sense of the breadth and importance of the collection and a deepened understanding of the whole history of the ship.

Japan Triumphant The Far East Campaign 1941–1942: Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives BY PHILIP JOWETT The Japanese offensive in the Far East in 1941–1942 was extraordinary in its ambition, for their aim was to advance across the entire region. They clashed with an array of forces in a series of lightning campaigns that included famous episodes like the raid on Pearl Harbor and the conquest of Singapore. In this vivid photographic history, Jowett covers the whole course of the offensive, portraying not only the Japanese military which achieved such incredible success but the armies they overwhelmed.

September 2019 160 pp. | 7½ x 9¾ | 200 illustrations Paperback (USAC) ISBN: 978-1-52673-435-8 $28.95 | Member: $17.37 WORLD WAR II

In a sequence of more than two-hundred wartime photographs—many of which have not been published before—he focuses on the land, sea, and air fighting as the Japanese occupied so much of the region. Rare images of the Japanese forces as they prepared for war and then made seemingly unstoppable progress are matched by a selection of images of the armies they surprised and vanquished. Japan Triumphant gives a powerful impression of the character of the war in the area and records the appearance, equipment, and weaponry of the armies involved and the conditions in which they fought. PHILIP JOWETT has been writing military history since 1997. He has published many books on the armies of Asia in the first half of the twentieth century and has made a special study of the armies of China. He has also published on the Russo-Japanese War, the Mexican revolution, and the Italian and Japanese armies of World War II. His most recent books are China and Japan at War 1937–1945 and Chiang Kai-shek versus Mao Tse-tung. SERIES: IMAGES OF WAR

The Men Who Flew the Vought F4U Corsair BY MARTIN W. BOWMAN First flown in 1940, the prototype Vought F4U Corsair instantly became the fastest fighter in the world and the fastest U.S. aircraft of any description. Powered by a huge 18-cylinder Pratt and Whitney Double Wasp engine driving an enormous 13-feet, 4-inch propeller, the first Corsairs were capable of speeds of 417 mph. This figure would rise to nearly 450 mph in later versions, despite the fact that fuel load and overall weight was increased. Martin Bowman’s comprehensive new book combines technical information and detailed development history with a fascinating combat history told, in many cases, by World War II pilots themselves. Well-researched and illustrated with dozens of rare and previously unpublished photographs, The Men Who Flew the Vought F4U Corsair is for any fan of the “bent wing bird.”

MARTIN W. BOWMAN is one of Britain’s best-known aviation historians and authors. His previous books have included works such as Legend of the Lancaster, Confounding the Reich, Duxford and the Big Wings, Clash of Eagles, and Lost Wings of World War I.

ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM

T

he Naval Institute Press is pleased to announce the publication of the oral history of the late Rear Adm. Herbert Spencer Matthews Jr., U.S. Navy (Retired). This memoir is noteworthy because of the variety of billets Admiral Matthews held during his long career and because he was the U.S. Navy’s first former enlisted pilot to obtain flag rank—one of only two altogether. He also served as Deputy Commander U.S. Naval Forces Vietnam during the controversial incursion into Cambodia in the spring of 1970. Matthews enlisted in the Navy in 1940, underwent flight training in 1942–43, and flew wartime patrols in 1944–45 as a member of Patrol Bombing Squadron 105 (VPB105). From 1945 to 1947 he served as a test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland. In 1947–49 he was a pilot in Patrol Squadron Five (VP-5). He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Tulane University in 1950–51 and attended General Line School and Communications School at Monterey, California, in 1951–52. In 1953 Matthews was assistant air officer of the escort carrier Salerno Bay (CVE110), followed by a tour in 1953–55 as flag secretary for Commander Carrier Division Two. He underwent survival training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 1955 and from 1955 to 1957 was executive officer of Attack Squadron 76 (VA-76). He was a student at the Naval War College in 1957–58; in 1958–59 commanded Attack Squadron 113 (VA-113); and served from 1959 to 1962 as part of the Institute of Naval Studies (a forerunner of the Center for Naval Analyses) at the Naval War College. He commanded Carrier Air Wing Two (CVW-2) in 1962–63 and served 1964–65 as executive officer of the aircraft carrier Hancock (CVA-19), including during early air strikes against North Vietnam. He was a Joint Staff planner, dealing with NATO nuclear weapons issues, 1965–67, then commanded the amphibious transport dock Hermitage (LSD-34) in 1967–68, during a Vietnam deployment. He commanded the aircraft carrier Independence (CVA-62) in 1968–69 and was selected for rear admiral in 1969.

GWy N DAvi E S, Department of History, Florida International University

The ferocity of the Japanese counterattacks tested the Americans’ resolve. Artillery radioman Moynihan and the infantrymen positioned in front of him withstood two banzai attacks on ing, “Banzai!” in honor of their emperor. Private Moynihan was at the 2nd Battalion command post, located about 100 to 150 feet behind the infantry companies, but that did not protect him

from Japanese attempts to retake the crest of the ridge and penetrate the draw. The Japanese troops typically did not expect to survive a banzai assault and pressed forward despite mortal wounds. . . .“When they came over… they [already] had tourniquets on their legs, by their groin, and they had tourniquets on their arms.”

Division, I am pleased that the author, Rodney Walton, prepared this book, which describes and explains the important efforts of U.S. Army artillery forward observers during the Battle of Okinawa, Japan. These forward observers were a key element in defeating the Japanese army. Due to their excellent performance and well-trained gun crews, no ‘short’ artillery round hit my Company L. Well remembered is our forward observer, 1st Lt. Ralph Palm, Battery C, 362nd Field Artillery Battalion, who was awarded two Bronze Star medals before being wounded on May 15, 1945.”

While other books about Okinawa have emphasized the role of infantrymen, armor, and U.S. Marines, this

work takes a fresh perspective by focusing on the vital role played by the U.S. Army’s forward artillery

By Rodney Earl Walton observers. They were the eyes and ears of American

While trying to maximize the damage inflicted on the enemy, the men had to deal with the ever-present possibility of firing on their own forces. The ability to shift artillery fire throughout the battlefield was a new development in World War II, and its evolution is fully examined in the book. Ultimately,

author Rodney Walton demonstrates that U.S. artillerymen matched Japanese gunners in intensity and surpassed them in effectiveness because their forward observers were able to provide a much shorter response time to requests for artillery support.

The son of one of the forward observers on Okinawa,

Walton has spent more than twenty years investigating what happened to his father and other artillerymen

during this epic battle. Interviews with the artillery-

men and the infantrymen they supported are central

to his story, which is filled with gripping and sometimes humorous accounts of what happened.
