Tabs on the guide are divided into the program areas offered by USN: MBA, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Orthodontics. Each USN program tab has lists of databases, useful websites, call numbers, and other details.

In addition to programs, there are also tabs with citation information, copyright issues, career information, workshops or tutorials, how to download handheld ap-

plications, the Library’’s hours, and other useful general information.

Changes in PubMed

This past autumn, PubMed made several changes to their database interface.

The homepage has been streamlined, requiring less effort to find resources.

Links from the blue side bar are now listed under the search box. Former tab functions are now under Advanced Search.

The NCBI site was also redesigned. Associated resources are now listed under categories.

Additional changes in early February include: x A Search Builder on the Advanced search page instead of separate fields x A link to Clipboard has

been added to the main page (shows when citations are added) A link from the homepage to a new Limits page with additional limits for dates and search field tags

Library Staff Continuing Education This fall Library Assistant Gaye D ’Agata attended the California Library Association Conference in Pasadena.

Gaye attended a half day fundraising institute listening to library trustees and friends talk about how they raise money for their libraries.

Topics for additional workshops she attended included librarians partnering with other community organizations, consumer health websites, automating a newspaper library, intellectual free-

dom, and cataloging.

It wasn ’t all serious as Gaye listened to Paula P o u n d s to n e a m u s in g ly praise libraries during the opening session. At an evening Gaming Social sponsored by the Young Adult librarians she played the Wii system for the first time.

Gaye reported, “Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution beat me down, but I rocked at golf and tennis! ” The last day of the conference, Gaye went to a workshop entitled, "Reaching Out

in All Directions: Unconventional Outreach for Academic Libraries." The presenter, who was from the University of San Diego, spoke about encouraging students to play an active part in planning their library services and space.

During the closing session, "Leadership at Every Level," California movers and shakers were recognized. All of them agreed that the definition of a leader is, "someone who motivates others to effect change by empowering other people."

Employee Spotlight: Talia Ashton “I am so excited to be part of USN! ” - New Library Assistant Talia Ashton

Talia Aston is the morning part-time Library Assistant at the LLRC in Henderson.

Originally from a small town in Wisconsin, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a Bachelor ’s in Wildlife Ecology in August 2003, and moved to southern Nevada about six months later.

She has worked a variety of jobs in the Las Vegas area, including desert tortoise biologist and water conservation aide. Talia has said, “I am so excited to be part of USN! ” For the past two years she has been taking graduate school classes online with Florida State University in

Tallahassee, FL. This past December, Talia completed her Master ’s degree in Library and Information Science!

Married with a 2-year old daughter, a baby on the way, and a dog, her hobbies include reading, hiking, and teaching American Sign Language to her daughter.

Employee Spotlight: Kelline Boel Kelline Boel is the evening part-time Library Assistant at the LLRC in South Jordan.

basically grew up in libraries and has been working with library systems since she was twelve!

She grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, and at eighteen moved to Utah.

Since her mother was a librarian, Kelline says she

Kelline earned her Bachelor ’s degrees in Accounting and in Business Administration from Stevens-Henager College. She is hoping to go

on and earn a Master ’s degree in Library Science.

Kelline loves Bollywood movies, historical fiction, music from different cultures and eras, and hanging out with her six children.

Loansome Doc may be the answer for you! Loansome Doc is the National Library of Medicine ’s Interlibrary Loan service, which allows you to request an article

from a barrage of medical and health science libraries throughout the United States.

Search Reserves in the Library Catalog We are excited to announce that reserves can now be searched via the Library Catalog!

Next, choose to search by course or instructor

Type the course or the instructor name in the search box.

Click on the words “Reserve Bookroom ” in the blue bar

Select the location you would like to search from the drop down menu

The results will appear

Click on the course or instructor name for the list of reserve items

Remember that reserve items are checked out for inlibrary use only.

Search tip: use an asterisk (*) to see all instructors or courses.
