HOLIDAY CHORAL SPECTACULAR 2025

Page 1

Greetings and welcome to our annual traditionthe Holiday Choral Spectacular. On behalf of my colleague, Dr. Gregory Fuller, we invite you to sit back and enjoy the sounds of the holidays with a vast array of musical styles and genres. The Southern Miss Symphony is proud to combine two celebrations this evening.

Our country is poised to turn 250 as we cross into the new year. In addition, the “Waltz King” Johann Strauss II turned 200 at the end of October, as we presented his operetta Die Fledermaus. Strauss himself created the perfect work for the occasion, so we will open our program with a waltz he used to great acclaim during his American tour of 1872.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all!

“Each voice singing carols is a note of peace in the American choir.” – Langston Hughes (adapted)

Veni, Sancte Spiritus

Agnus Dei - Lux Aeterna

O Nata Lux

O nata lux de lumine, Jesu redemptor saeculi, dignare clemens supplicum laudes preces que sumere. Qui carne quondam contegi dignatus es pro perditis. Nos membra confer effici, tui beati corporis.

O born light of light, Jesus, redeemer of the world, mercifully deem worthy and accept the praises and prayers of your supplicants. Thou who once deigned to be clothed in flesh for the sake of the lost ones, grant us to be made members of your holy body.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus

Veni, Sancte Spiritus, Et emitte coelitus

Lucis tuae radium. Veni, pater pauperum, Veni, dator munerum,  Veni, lumen cordium.

Consolator optime,

Dulcis hospes animae,

Dulce refrigerium.

In labore requies,

In aestu temperies,  In fletu solatium.

O lux beatissima,

Reple cordis intima

Tuorum fidelium.

Come, Holy Spirit,

Send forth from heaven

The ray of thy light.

Come, Father of the poor,  Come, giver of gifts,

Come, light of hearts.

Thou best of Consolers,

Sweet guest of the soul,

Sweet refreshment.

In labor, thou art rest,

In heat, the tempering,

In grief, the consolation.

O Light most blessed,

Fill the inmost heart

Of all thy faithful.

Without your grace,

There is nothing in us,

Nothing that is not harmful.

Cleanse what is sordid, Moisten what is arid,

Heal what is hurt.

Flex what is rigid,

Fire what is frigid,

Correct what goes astray.

Grant to thy faithful,

Those trusting in thee,

Thy sacred seven-fold gifts.

Grant the reward of virtue,

Grant the deliverance of salvation,

Grant everlasting joy.

Agnus Dei - Lux Aeterna

Agnus Dei,  qui tollis peccata mundi,  dona eis requiem.

Agnus Dei,  qui tollis peccata mundi,  dona eis requiem sempiternam.

Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine: Cum sanctis tuis in aeternum: quia pius es.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,  et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Alleluia. Amen.

Egyptian March (1869)

Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world,  grant them rest.

Lamb of God,  who takest away the sins of the world,  grant them rest everlasting.

May light eternal shine upon them, O Lord, in the company of thy Saints for  ever and ever; for thou art merciful.

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and  let perpetual light shine upon them.

Alleluia. Amen.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Dr. Gregory Fuller is a professor of music and the director of Choral Activities at The University of Southern Mississippi. He conducts the Southern Chorale and the Hattiesburg Choral Union, teaches graduate conducting courses, and supervises candidates in the master’s and doctoral conducting program. Previously, Professor Fuller held conducting appointments at The University of Missouri in Columbia and Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa.

Dr. Fuller has appeared as a conductor or clinician in 25 different countries and 30 states. His performance record includes 16 refereed (blind audition) invitations, including podium appearances at the national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Music Educators National Conference (MENC), and the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO), along with numerous state and regional convention appearances. Dr. Fuller has organized and executed over 60 tours, including more than 30 international trips to three continents. Included in that travel portfolio are many concert tours, study groups, pilgrimages, and four conducting symposiums for his choral graduate students in Estonia, Salt Lake City, Russia, and Sweden. He has served the Mississippi Chapter of American Choral Directors Association as college and university chair, convention site coordinator, and President.  In summer of 2026, Fuller will appear with the Southern Chorale at FestivalSouth in Hattiesburg, in Italy at Incanto Varese and at the White Nights Music Festival in Haapsalu, Estonia.

Dr. Fuller has remained active as a conductor in orchestral and wind settings. To date, he has appeared with professional or university instrumental ensembles on over 100 occasions. He is known as a champion of new extended works. He has conducted national or world premieres of 11 new extended works in the last two decades, including recent performances of St. Michael Songs and Skysongs by Tõnu Kõrvits and Et Lux In Tenebris Lucet: Requieum for the Forgotten by Richard Burchard. Fuller has helped prepare orchestral choruses for more than 50 important performances, including presentations with the St. Louis Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Mobile Symphony, Pensacola Symphony, Sioux City Symphony, Mississippi Symphony, Gulf Coast Symphony, and the outstanding orchestras and wind ensembles at the University of Missouri and The University of Southern Mississippi. In five seasons as conductor of the Sioux City Municipal Band (formerly the Monahan Post Band, a 100-year tradition), he hosted many successful artists, including internationally acclaimed horn player, Michael Thompson.

Fuller has served a variety of different roles with community choruses and in churches, starting as a graduate assistant with the Choral Union in Columbia at the University of Missouri, where he eventually premiered Phropheta Lucis by John Cheetham, a choral-orchestral work commissioned for the University’s Sesquicentennial Gala Concert. In Sioux City, he quickly expanded the resources, membership, and audience of the Siouxland Master Chorale, culminating in several tours and a short residency in Yamanashi City, Japan, which included a performance on Japanese National Public Television. The Choral Union at Southern Miss is the primary orchestral chorus for The University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. Among regular performances of substantive oratorio, in 2007, they were a partner with the Mississippi Arts Commission presenting state-wide performances honoring Mississippi composer William Grant Still. In addition, the Choral Union performed The Prodigal, a Southern Miss-commissioned oratorio by Mack Wilberg at the American Choral Directors Association State Convention in 2015. While in Iowa, Fuller worked closely with the Catholic Diocese of Northwest Iowa in planning and executing music for Episcopal liturgies. This included the rededication of the Cathedral of the Epiphany and the ordination of Bishop Daniel DiNardo, now Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of the Galveston-Houston Diocese. Fuller is currently the choirmaster at Parkway Heights United Methodist in Hattiesburg.

Currently serving as associate professor of music and associate director of Choral Activities at The University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Jonathan C. Kilgore conducts Concert Choir, Spirit of Southern, and the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale. Additionally, he advises and teaches courses in the undergraduate and graduate music education curriculum.  Dr. Kilgore came to Southern Miss after eight years as director of Choral Activities and Fine Arts Department chair at the Jackson County Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Dr. Kilgore has conducted a variety of ensembles, including concert choirs, vocal jazz and contemporary a cappella ensembles, and show choirs.  He has planned and led concert tours to Brazil, Canada, Hawaii, California, Puerto Rico, and Texas, as well as many trips in the Southeast region. In addition, choirs under his leadership have performed in Austria, the Czech Republic, and throughout Italy. Concert Choir is proud to have had four state ACDA Conference performances in Mississippi and Louisiana since 2019, and Spirit of Southern was privileged to perform at the Southern Region ACDA Biannual Conference in Louisville, Ky.

Active as an adjudicator and clinician in the southeast, Dr. Kilgore has served as president of the Mississippi Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association and maintains membership in the College Music Society, the National Association for Music Education, and the National Collegiate Choral Organization.  He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and the Master of Music in choral conducting performance & pedagogy from The University of Southern Mississippi and the Bachelor of Science in music from Millsaps College.

Gregory Wolynec is in his second year as director of Orchestral Activities at The University of Southern Mississippi. He directs the Symphony Orchestra, oversees the graduate program in orchestral conducting, and conducts performances of the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company. He is also the founder and music director emeritus of Middle Tennessee’s acclaimed Gateway Chamber Orchestra (GCO), which he directed for 17 years. Wolynec previously served as director of instrumental ensembles at Austin Peay State University (APSU) in Clarksville, Tenn., from 2003-24.

Wolynec has sought to revolutionize the potential of the 21st century orchestra. His unique programming philosophy received national attention with GCO producer Blanton Alspaugh receiving two GRAMMY nominations and a win as Classical Producer of the Year. Ambitious multi-media family concerts have been recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts and the League of American Orchestras. He spearheaded pandemic projects, including the Magical Music & Timeless Tales video series, the YouTube broadcast of the Beethoven @250: Humanity in 2020 concert, and America’s Haydn Festival in May of 2021, featuring performances by GCO, as well as the St. Lawrence String Quartet, pianist Henry Kramer and hosted by Bill McGlaughlin. In 2021, Wolynec also worked with composer Cristina Spinei to successfully launch the first NFT of a musical work commissioned by an American orchestra. This was profiled on NPR’s Marketplace Money. He also oversaw a multi-year project in collaboration with Nashville Ballet to create a new Nutcracker employing the music of Tchaikovsky, Duke Ellington and Vinico Meza. In 2025, Wolynec oversaw the groundbreaking release of recordings of Osvaldo Golijov’s massive La Pasión según San Marcos in audio, video and virtual reality formats.

Wolynec holds a BM in music education and clarinet performance from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, as well as the MM and DMA in instrumental conducting from Michigan State University. He was a recipient of a Fulbright Grant to Prague, Czech Republic, where he studied conducting at the Prague Conservatory. There, he also worked with the Karlovy Vary Symphony.

For Carlos E. Tello Herrera, conducting is more than leading an orchestra—it is about channeling music’s profound ability to inspire and transform. A native of Cali, Colombia, he currently serves as the Symphony Orchestra conducting graduate assistant and co-conductor of the new Hattiesburg Civic Orchestra.

Carlos is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in orchestral conducting at Southern Miss with Dr. Gregory Wolynec, where he also received his master’s degree in orchestral conducting studying with Dr. Michael Miles. His musical foundation began with a bachelor’s degree in double bass performance from the Conservatorio Antonio María Valencia in Cali, Colombia, and a Master of Music Research from the International University of La Rioja, Spain.

Previous conducting experiences include leading the Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra Tito Sangiorgi, where he served as chief conductor. Carlos’ artistic vision emphasizes music’s transformative power, bridging cultures and ideas through performance.

Erick Diaz Quispe is a conductor, pianist, and educator originally from Lima, Peru. He currently serves as graduate assistant of the University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and co-conductor of the Hattiesburg Civic Orchestra.

Erick is pursuing a Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting at USM under the guidance of Dr. Gregory Wolynec, further expanding his artistic focus on the podium. He previously completed both his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in piano performance at USM under the mentorship of Dr. Ellen Elder. Originally trained as a pianist, he earned his Bachelor of Music in piano performance and the professional degree of Licentiate in piano performance from the National Conservatory of Music in Lima, studying with Carlota Bravo.

In addition to his orchestral work, Erick has developed meaningful experience in the choral conducting field, working with beginning and intermediate choirs in both Peru and the United States. His broad musical background and growing leadership experience reflect his commitment to developing a dynamic and versatile career as a conductor. Since 2022, Erick has been an active member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), the Mississippi Music Teachers Association (MMTA), and the Hattiesburg Music Teachers League (HMTL), through which he continues to promote excellence in music education and community engagement.

With these funds, we’ll be able to

(1) professionally livestream our worldclass performances so that they’ll be available anywhere the Internet can be accessed,

(2) record these incredible musicians’ concerts for commercial release, and

(3) take this show on the road with touring ensembles playing in prestigious concert halls throughout the country and eventually the world.

I can think of no better cultural ambassadors for our great state than our own gem here in Hattiesburg, and we invite you to join us on this adventure with a one-time or multi-year gift to the USM Foundation’s “Bringing Mississippi to the World” fund. Details for doing so can be found on the back of this insert.
