Welcome to the closing concert of our first ever Haydn in Hattiesburg festival. What you are about to hear is an orchestra that started its life together on Sunday afternoon and has crystalized into a mature group of musical friends. The event itself was dreamed up almost exactly a month ago to provide a meaningful festival experience here in Hattiesburg as international travel became just too risky for many of our students. This week has reminded us of the power of music to bring people together.
Franz Joseph Haydn is known as ‘Papa’ Haydn because of his role in developing both the string quartet and the symphony. His work in those genres resulted in a massive output that was very influential on the generations that followed him. This influence was keenly felt by his most famous pupil – Ludwig van Beethoven. Haydn himself was a humble craftsman who was immensely popular with the musicians that he oversaw at the Esterhazy court. As you will surely hear that craftsmanship is matched with unending elegance and a keen wit. We look forward to championing Haydn, and the music he so inspired, both today and in the years ahead.
Today’s program will start with an overture for small wind ensemble by Felix Mendelssohn that he wrote at the incomprehensible age of 15. Haydn’s penultimate symphony was part of his final set of London’s symphonies and earned its name from the dramatic opening. Beethoven’s most classical symphony shows the evolution of the genre in the hands of one of music’s greatest trailblazers.
