The School of Music at The University of Southern Mississippi is pleased to welcome you to our 2010-11 Concert Series. We are proud to continue the Sound Tradition of exciting, innovative and quality concerts the School of Music has been bringing to our community for 100 years. We are quite confident that in this year’s Concert Series there is something every music lover will find attractive. From classical to jazz to opera, from solo performances to chamber music to combined orchestral and choral works, our Concert Series will entertain, educate and feed the soul of every music lover. The year 2010 marks the Centennial of The University of Southern Mississippi. The School of Music continues the celebration with an array of international guest artists and our own talented faculty in a variety of musical settings. Our Wind Ensemble will premiere the Solar Traveller, a Concerto for Piano and Wind Orchestra by Judith Lang Zaimont with faculty member Elizabeth Moak at the piano. We will also present PRISM, a fast-paced, action-packed showcase of the instrumental program featuring The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band and Dixie Darlings. The Symphony Orchestra continues its tradition of bringing international talent to Hattiesburg as well as producing Puccini’s most moving opera, La Bohème, and our popular holiday celebration, Winter Wonderland. The choral program will host the Centennial Southern Miss Alumni Chorale and perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ moving Dona Nobis Pacem. Other special events include a Homecoming kickoff concert by world-renowned jazz artist Terence Blanchard and his quintet, and a concert by the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin. There are also dozens of faculty recitals, guest artist recitals and our Connoisseur’s Chamber Music Series for your aesthetic enrichment. The 2010-11 Concert Series is presented in this booklet in sub-series according to musical genre and ensemble type. We present it this way so that each music patron can go directly to his or her area of interest when searching for concerts to attend. If you want to search the series by dates, there is a complete list of concerts in the back of the booklet. We hope you will keep the booklet for easy reference, and we look forward to seeing you at all of our concert events this season.
