ENDOWMENT FUND REPORT

University School of Milwaukee’s endowment is an essential investment in the school’s ability to maintain its leading edge as a nationally ranked independent school. From academics to athletics, and arts to innovation, life at USM is rich with activities as diverse as our student population. These valuable activities require funding to support the people and programs that contribute to the attainment of the school’s annual objectives. The school’s endowment, which originated with the predecessor schools and increases in value over time thanks to donor contributions and market growth, provides a significant portion of this funding annually. USM is grateful for all donors who have supported the endowment throughout the years, including over new investors who established a new restricted endowed fund this year.

As of June 30, 2023, USM’s endowment has a value of $95 million and consists of a combination of general endowment as well as nearly 100 named, endowed funds (listed on the adjacent page) established by USM donors to directly support school priorities. In keeping with our long-standing endowment policy, 5% of the average fund value from the trailing eight quarters is distributed to the fund’s designated program, or in the case of general endowment, to all aspects of the school’s core mission. In this manner, the endowment inspires our community members to invest in an area of school life that is meaningful to them and their families while helping to educate USM students as learners, leaders, and citizens.

For independent schools like USM, endowment is the di erentiator between sustaining and thriving. The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) has established a guideline that independent schools should aim to achieve an endowment valued at three times their annual budget in order to be a successful school into the next decade. At USM we take this very seriously as we approach, but have not yet achieved, this level. USM’s Endowment Board is led by President Tom Florsheim ’76 and is comprised of former members of the Board of Trustees. The endowment is managed by CommonFund, a nonprofit investment management firm that serves over 2,000 independent schools, universities, and nonprofit organizations. The school’s endowment policy follows a long-term investment strategy, calling for a 75/25 equity-to-fixed income ratio with meaningful international exposure and a careful commitment to alternative investments such as private equity. The thoughtful generosity of our donors allows the endowment to continue supporting our students and school of today and the future.

SENIOR GIFT PROGRAM

This 2023 Senior Gift program aimed to empower student involvement in the gift process. Will Piper, assistant director of alumni relations and reunion giving, shared insights on philanthropy’s significance and USM’s culture of generosity with the seniors. Subsequently, eight students volunteered for the Senior Class Gift Committee, meeting consistently throughout winter to conceptualize a class gift. The Class of 2023 decided on the “Class of 2023 Grove” and fundraising for a chosen bench, alongside initiating an endowed fund to perpetually support future USM students.

Committee members included Libby Cox, Louis D’Olhaberriagu, Emery Endres, Evelyn Graham, Jackson Lamanna,Einthiri Mudili, Osi Igwe, and Mackenzie Petersen. The committee drafted a letter seeking donations for the Senior Class Gift, striving for inclusivity by suggesting a $23 contribution per student to cover the bench cost. In addition, a separate appeal was made to families asking them to consider contributing to this cause.

The Senior Class Gift appeal garnered significant success, amassing 43 unique gifts that totaled over $12,000. This encompasses the bench’s cost, naming the Class of 2023 grove, and initiating an endowed fund that will continue to grow beyond $35,000. Subsequent gifts from the Class of ‘23 will contribute to this endowed fund. Class Agents Emery Endres and Einthiri Mudili from the Class of ‘23 will collaborate with the assistant director of alumni relations and reunion giving to oversee and allocate the fund once it reaches the $35,000 milestone.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION REPORT

USM’s Parents’ Association (PA) is an integral part of our school community, fostering a culture of generosity and building connections between parents and the school. Every parent or guardian is a member of the PA, and actively participating in this organization is a rewarding way for them to stay involved in their child’s education and contribute to the school’s overall success. Through various events and initiatives organized by the PA, parents have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with other parents, creating a strong sense of community within the school. Furthermore, the PA plays a crucial role in fundraising e orts, having donated over $600,000 in the last five years. Funds raised support PA-sponsored student and family activities and campus-wide initiatives made possible by the USM Fund. Through community, communication, collaboration, and contribution, the Parents’ Association continues to demonstrate its commitment to our school and families.

Last year, the Parents’ Association reevaluated its annual events and fundraisers to ensure they aligned with the school’s mission and created a support network for our families. Holiday Shops remains its main source of fundraising, which helps contribute financial support to activities that create a supportive, engaged, and inclusive school community.

A new initiative, the spring Give and Grow Participation Drive, enhanced the partnership with our school. During a dedicated week in April, Parents’ Association leadership e ectively communicated the importance of the USM Fund to our parent/guardian community, leading by example and sharing specific reasons why it is crucial. As a result, the parent/guardian participation rate increased significantly, demonstrating strong community involvement and support for our school and families.

BOOSTER CLUB REPORT

The University School of Milwaukee Booster Club is the parent organization whose purpose is to encourage support for all USM student athletes and athletic programs. It strives to foster school spirit and sportsmanship, provide volunteer and financial support, recognize the achievements of all team and athletes, and support cooperation and communication among all constituents. The organization also coordinates the Booster Club team parents who provide game day meals and help to plan the teams’ season events. Additionally, the Booster Club raises funds through membership, the collection of gate admissions and sales of concessions and spirit wear. These funds are utilized to purchase athletic equipment requested by coaches and to improve the overall athletic experience for our student athletes.
