From the Editor...

A

nd just like that the 2018-2019 school year is over! For some, this means graduating from the University of Sioux Falls and moving on to graduate school to further their education. For others, you’ll be hitting the doors of your first “big kid job” as soon as you walk out of the Washington Pavillion on the 19th. But for the rest of you who get to continue your time at USF, soak it in— because you’ll be preparing for graduation before you know it. So work really hard in your classes, and resist the urge to procrastinate until the very last minute. Participate in the monthly events like Humans vs Zombies or Crafternoons in Cooper’s. Take a step outside of your comfort zone, make new friends and join new clubs. Like writing for The Vessel, because I feel obligated to leave one last shameless plug. But most importantly… enjoy every second you have left at our beloved University.

I was only able to experience my junior and senior years at USF, but in that short amount of time I have met some of the most amazingly kind humans and some of my new, lifelong friends. My time here has changed and impacted my life so greatly, and I will be forever thankful for what USF has given me.

So to every person I have had the pleasure of meeting and the entire campus that has made me feel at home— from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Preparation for graduation Story by Kullyn Meffert

I

t is that time of the year again. That time when high school and college seniors have to make decisions about what they are going to do in their future. It is time for graduation.

But what does it take to be ready for graduation? Traci Osterberg, with the Registrar’s Office at the University of Sioux Falls, thinks it starts at the beginning. “In my opinion, preparing for graduation begins when students start at USF. When they enroll each semester students are progressing towards completing the Liberal Arts Core and their major which is ultimately preparing them for what comes after graduating from USF,” says Osterberg.

Preparing for graduation from the beginning of one’s college career takes some of the stress of graduating away.

Making preparations for graduation early on in one’s academic career does help. What other steps should students take in order to be prepared for graduation? Osterberg says that having an academic plan is a good place to start.

“I would recommend students make

a course plan for each semester while they are at USF, work closely with their advisor each term, and stay engaged in their courses. There are so many people on campus that are committed to making sure students are successful during their time at USF and after they graduate. I would encourage students to ask for help and really take advantage of all of the support USF offers.”

Having a plan about what you need to do is a good place to start.

Another thing that does help in preparing for graduation is asking for help and taking advantage of that help.

That help and support is something that Osterberg thinks students do not know a lot about.

“I would say that students don’t always know about the support services that the Academic Success Center offers to students. They work with students with their resumes, they will do mock interviews, and they often have connections with employers as

well. Their services are available to students even after they graduate!” The Academic Success Center is there to help students with a lot things to do with preparing for graduation. A good way to prepare for graduation is to take advantage of all of the services that are provided. A student does not have to go into graduation alone.

“I would tell them not to stress and again recommend they connect with staff members at USF. We are in the business of helping students graduate and moving on to what’s next and we love to help students and see them succeed!” says Osterberg.

The staff at USF are here to help students. They want students to succeed. Having that help can take some of that stress off of a student’s shoulders.

Graduation means one chapter in a student’s life is closing while another is opening. Being prepared makes the transition between chapters a little smoother. Asking for help is a good thing, one does not have to walk through graduation alone.

Share Scholarship at Eleventh Annual

niversity of Sioux Falls students gathered in Cleveland Hall Tuesday, April 30, 2019 for the Eleventh Annual USF Research Symposium. The Research Symposium is an opportunity for students to share their scholarly work through presentation panels. Presentations are adapted from research essays that students have created during their academic career. This years’ topics included the French Revolution, treatment of ADHD, Hebrew tradition, and a variety of other researchbased studies.

Dr. Sarah Sinnott headed organization of this year’s Symposium, ensuring that the day unfolded without a hitch. Sinnott was excited to be involved, as she finds the Symposium to be an invaluable opportunity for students and faculty. “The Research Symposium is great for students to understand that the work they do in their classes can have a real impact in the world. People present on topics that could make a difference in how we understand things, how we think, how we treat people, how we run business. The things we study really do have value outside of class.”

For Sinnott, the Symposium has the ability to engage students and faculty in new conversations about a multitude of subjects.

“It’s great to be able to talk to somebody about their research because it sparks interest in you to do your own research, and find some things that interest you that you didn’t know about before.”

The Symposium is a platform for students to share their own research, but it is also an opportunity to learn from the studies of others. Most notably, attendees are able to sit in on an annual keynote speaker. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Joshua Pope, Assistant Professor of Spanish at Doane University. Pope introduced the linguistic research that he had conducted while studying abroad in Spain in his presentation, “Learning Language and Life Lessons During Study Abroad.” Sinnott, who was tasked with choosing the keynote speaker, was deliberate in her invitation to Pope. “My idea for the speaker was to find somebody in the area that hadn’t previously spoken at a symposium before. I also knew that Spanish

was an area that hadn’t been represented. So I reached out to [Pope] because he has done something that is very important to me, which is study abroad,” said Sinnott.

Linguistic research was also explored by juniors Anna Buxengard, Carly Knutson, and Julie Willison as they addressed the experiences of English-language learners in Sioux Falls in their presentation, “Language and Social Justice in Sioux Falls.” They interviewed individuals from a variety of different backgrounds, ultimately presenting the dissonance between Englishlanguage learners and the larger Englishspeaking community. To communicate this dissonance, the students began their presentation by introducing themselves in Spanish. Buxengard said this aspect was essential. “The presentation is about not being able to understand English, feeling uncomfortable or worried that you’re not going to understand the information that is given to you. So, we decided that we’re going to start speaking in a different language and make people feel uncomfortable, because that’s how [English-language learners] feel.”

The trio was well aware of the social significance of their project, and was therefore all the more motivated to share their research. “All of us wanted to do this, so it made it easier to work together and make it happen. Whereas other group projects are an assignment, where it isn’t voluntary and you may not want to work with the other people,” said Willison.

Knutson said personal involvement makes a project all the more effective. “[The presentation] turned into more of a passion project. You have something that you want to leave your audience with, as opposed to just saying ‘here’s a bunch of numbers on a screen, do with it what you will.’”

The Research Symposium was filled with long-gestating passion projects. Senior Jessica Mays presented on the personal and

the professional, as she had two different presentations on Tuesday. She explored creative writing in “The Only Enemy is Time: A Collection of Sestinas,” and local history in “Flu Vacation Enjoyed Here: Sioux Falls College and the Spanish Flu in 1918.”

The benefits of the Research Symposium are multifold: it serves as a platform for scholarly inquiry, but it also provides professional experience for students. “[The Symposium] is important for people who are going out and trying to find jobs or getting into grad school, to show that you have done primary research and can present on it clearly. It’s what a lot of schools and employers will be looking for. You have the experience now to connect with [other presenters] and enjoy research that’s outside of your field,” said Mays. Tuesday marked Mays’ fourth year of presenting at the Symposium. According to Mays, the key to a successful presentation is thorough preparation. She offers the following advice to future presenters. “Make sure you plan ahead and [plan] strategies to engage the audience with your topic and be ready for any question that might come up, so that you can prove that you know your topic other than what you’ve prepared to tell them.”

Next year’s Research Symposium may be far off, but students interested in presenting can begin speaking with their professor about potential topics. Many projects are the culmination of extensive research, writing, and preparation, so it’s not too early to begin the process.

Rainbow Comics Welcomes Artist

Rainbow Comics in Sioux Falls celebrated two big events on Wednesday, March 27. First it was Batman’s 80th Birthday and second, but no less important, the release of Detective Comics #1000. As part of the celebration, comic artist Doug Mahnke was on hand to autograph the landmark issue, which features his art on 12 pages of the comic.’’

This was a big deal not only for comic book fans, but also for the city of Sioux vc since it is not often major artists come through town.

The event drew a large crowd from all over the region to Rainbow’s 3310 S. Minnesota Ave location. The store was packed to see Mahnke sign his name to everyone’s copy.

According to the DC Comics website writing about Detective #1000, “This 96-page issue is stacked with an unbelievable lineup of talent that will take you on a journey through Batman’s past, present and future...”

It is impossible to deny the history of Batman and Detective Comics.

80 years is a long time for anything to be around, let alone a comic book character. But, somehow, Batman made it happen.

Stay tuned for the next Comic Cornerstone, where I’ll be reviewing the first 5 issues of IDW’s new Transformers series. So, until then, stay comical!

Fans started arriving an hour before Mahnke and his manager, Jon Jespersen got there. Rainbow has plenty of fans, but they aren’t usually there all at the same time. That big a crowd usually happens once a year during the annual Free Comic Book Day celebration.

For Media Studies and Art students at the University of Sioux Falls, change is in the air. Both departments have added new classes and created a partnership that supports the rapidly changing interactive and digital technology media field. This program merger, called Media and Visual Arts, gives students more options and classes to prepare them for jobs in digital art and media. This huge change will allow the gap between the Visual Arts and Media students to meet in the middle.

The exciting news was released this spring, after many years of putting in research, time and collaboration between Associate Professor of Art, Ceca Cooper and Assistant Professors of Media Studies, Nick Poppens and Nancy Sutton. Media and Visual Arts will draw students interested in traditional art and media, but also those hoping for a career in digital marketing, interactive art and design, and corporate video production.

“This is the only local college who has taken steps towards this collaboration in the area. We hope this will give our students a step up in future endeavors,”

says Cooper.

With the collaboration in place, the 2019 Fall semester will be showcasing some of the new classes as well as classes that have been renamed and reimagined.

Cooper says, “We are very excited to bring new classes like 3D sculpture and digital painting to USF because it is something very unique and something fun for the students to be exposed to.”

Professor Poppens expressed his excitement with these new changes in the Media department. “We saw a need for further skill formation in terms of advanced video projects so we added a second part to our intro class called Advanced Media & Visual Arts. We also added a 2D/3D Motion Graphics course and a Media Graphics course because many of the careers our students were going into required these specific skills.

Other new courses include Intro to Social Media Management and other social media related courses.”

Besides the new classes, Media Studies staff updated the Marketing concentration to include Social Media. Now called Social Media and Marketing, it will offer classes in Social Media Management, Digital Strategy and Web Analytics, and Web Design. Along with the concentration, Media Studies has partnered with the Degree Completion Program to offer a Social Media Marketing Certificate which will offer an additional course in Email Marketing. Students can also get a minor in Media Studies along with an associate's degree.

So as the Spring semester winds down, and many University of Sioux Falls students meet with their professors to talk about what classes they need and want, they will see a lot of new and interesting digital options in Media and Visual Arts that just might lead to an exciting career. T

he Vessel is a student lead news service for the University of Sioux Falls, encompassing a website, news broadcasts, and a magazine. The magazine about life on the USF campus comes out once a month during the school year and has deep roots in the history of the college.

It started as The Stylus student newspaper and was published from 1909-1981. From The Stylus to USF College Week, the USF Media Studies program has had multiple versions of their publications and news programs as the journalism field evolved technologically. Two years ago, these formats converged under the branding of The Vessel. The Vessel Staff is finishing up the 2018-19 school year and are looking back and reminiscing about what this group means to them and the school.

Marissa Lute and Jessica Perez are the student leaders of the 2018/19 Vessel magazine. Marissa is the Editor-in-Chief and Jessica is the Creative Director.

"Being a part of The Vessel means a lot to me," says Perez. "It has given me the opportunity to learn about media and help me figure out what I wanted to do with my life."

Producing a monthly magazine, distributing it across campus and publishing it online provides students with the opportunity to establish a byline and work in a real-world journalism setting.

"I think The Vessel is a great opportunity for all students, even if they aren't media majors. It allows for us to be creative, highlight current students and influence the campus in a positive way," says Lute.

“The best part of hammocking is getting together with all of your friends to hang out and enjoy the nice weather.”

L

iving in South Dakota, we are all aware that the warm weather may be here one day and gone the next.

So when it hit 70 degrees and sunny outside, USF students left the dorms to celebrate the day. Here are some of the ways they enjoy the sun.

Hammocking: USF’s campus is home to many beautiful trees and areas to enjoy everything nature has to offer. The USF Hammock Club meets every single day from 3 to 7 p.m. if the weather is nice enough. President Adele Kenkel and Advisor Kenedy Kieffer compiled a group of 15+ hammock lovers. Before members actually formed as a large group they had previously been hammocking on their own and decided to start doing it together. Besides just liking the idea of hammocking, there are many aspects that make it so special for club members.

and arms. President Steven Brown accumulated more than 25 hacky-sack enthusiasts. The group as a whole meets on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. outside on the Quad or the Stewart Center if the weather is bad. Besides the scheduled Wednesday night meet up, you can find various group members out and about at random times throughout the week.

Slacklining: Combining both aspects of hammocking and hacky-sack, slacklining puts your balancing abilities to the test by walking the tightrope from a slightly less terrifying height. USF’s slacklining club meets up whenever there are outdoor campus events such as picnics taking

“You definitely don’t need to know how to slackline, but we encourage everyone to try. But if people just want to hangout outside with us, that’s fine too!” says Zawadzki. He says his favorite part about the sport is that every time he goes out, he gets a little bit better.

As the warm weather returns and is here to stay, you can enjoy all of these activities yourself by simply joining these USF clubs.

Become a hacky-sack pro, master the art of slacklining, or climb to the highest point of a tree and hang out in a hammock.

Whether you’re interested in the adventure, snacks, nature, friends, or you simply just want to hang out, the USF Hammock Club is the club for you.

Hacky-Sack Club: If you’re into something that requires more activity and skill check out the hacky-sack club. It may seem like a simple activity, but it takes concentration and coordination to move that hackysack around with just your knees, feet,

ndividuals often love being a part of something bigger than themselves, and that’s exactly how Sioux Falls native Caitlyn (Cat) Carman lived her life. That is why University of Sioux Falls junior, Kenzie Erickson, decided to bring the Live Like Cat organization to campus.

on campus and will now lead Live Like Cat. "We did the book drive for Live Like Cat earlier this month and plan on doing another book drive after break. We are also looking to the education department and anyone who has ideas of what more we can do," says Erickson.

Friends and family say Cat was the most giving, passionate person who would light up a room just with her smile. She loved with her whole heart and cherished every moment of her life. Caitlyn tragically passed away from a car accident on March 8, 2018, but that didn’t stop family and friends from continuing her legacy. The Live Like Cat Organization went live on her birthday March 30, 2019. Caitlyn had a passion for education and literacy, was majoring in education at the University of South Dakota, so her organization focuses on giving back to children as well as to teachers. Around the USF campus, there are Live Like Cat boxes where students and anyone interested can donate old and new books to the organization.

Erickson met with Barb Olson, Caitlyn’s mother, and Alex Carman, Caitlyn's sister, to talk about how this could be accomplished. Olson said she loved the idea and was excited to see the organization develop at USF.

Erickson grew up with Caitlyn and is the organizer of the Live Like Cat club at USF. Erickson was the leader of Love Your Melon when the club was active

The Live Like Cat Club will start with continuing to bring awareness of Cat’s legacy around campus and will eventually branch into apparel, donating money and supplies to first through third year teachers, as well as the Live Like Cat scholarship opportunities.

Erickson says, "Literally she was the best person ever. Everywhere we went, she was the one person that would make everyone laugh. She was such an amazing person on the inside and out and never failed to make everyone else's day a little better. She always put everyone elses happiness before her own."

Life Lessons Learned from Cat: 1. Never take life too seriously

USF Football Team Gives Back

eing a college athlete is a unique experience shared by only 420,000 students nationwide. The title Student Athlete carries a great deal of weight with responsibilities ranging from the field to the classroom to the community. One overlooked aspect of this platform is the ability to give back and impact the community through off the field efforts. The University of Sioux Falls football team got their chance to give back on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7, when the men of the Coo spent their weekend with the participants of the 2019 South Dakota Miss Amazing event.

Miss Amazing is a national competition featuring young women with varying types of special needs. The South Dakota Miss Amazing program’s inaugural year was in 2015 and has experienced exponential growth. The 2018 event was highlighted with 28 participants and the program’s first sold out event. A production that big needs volunteers. There are three main avenues of volunteer work with the Miss Amazing event: being a Buddy, lending a helping hand, and the Right Hand Man program.

The Buddies of Miss Amazing spend the day with the participants, getting to know them and helping them get ready for the event. The Helping Hands do professional hair and makeup for the participants,

and the Right Hand Men escort the participants on stage in their evening wear.

Augustana University is generally the main source of the Right Hand Man volunteers, but when USF football’s Head Coach Jon Anderson was approached with the opportunity to help he decided without hesitation that it would be a great opportunity. Upon learning more about the program and the positive things involved with it, he knew the young men on his team would make the perfect Right Hand Men for the weekend. Anderson says, “anytime we can give back and be selfless it benefits us.” He also highlighted the fact that although the football team is a community in itself, it is part of and can positively reflect the entire USF community as a whole.

Courtney Nelson, the Assistant Director for South Dakota Miss Amazing spoke about the typical pool of volunteers that they draw from. “In the past, we've always used Augie football players and other men from the community, but Katy (State Director) and I decided to include as many groups as possible, which meant putting everybody outside of their comfort zone and inviting USF players as well.” Nelson says the event went very well and all of the participants did great and seemed

comfortable on stage. “Having USF players there made the experience so much more enjoyable,” said Nelson.

Two key figures on the team, Redshirt Junior Mike Enalls and Senior Elijah Perine stepped up and helped in a major way over the course of the weekend.

Enalls, a starting linebacker and Sioux Falls native said it “felt right” to give back and help out in his home community. Perine, a starting offensive lineman for the Coo added that he “learned to live everyday to the fullest” and has a new appreciation for helping other people bring out the best in themselves.

Overall it was a great weekend for the Sioux Falls community and everyone involved with the Miss Amazing Program.

Feedback from both the players and the organizers of the event was nothing but positive. Nelson added, “as long as USF wants to come back, we would love to have you all there!”

KCFS Radio is the University of Sioux Falls student operated radio station.

Students get the chance to work in the station to play music or host a talk show. 20 current USF students are producing their own shows this spring semester. The radio studio is part of USF’s media program but accepts students from all majors.

Radio is supervised by USF student Radio Managers Hannah Wold and Grant Sweeter. “We help out the people that need help. If there’s a mechanical issue, we’ll fix that. We’re in charge of tracking radio lab hours and adding new songs. Basically, just keeping an eye on the radio lab,” says Sweeter. This is Sweeter’s second year as the Radio Manager.

The number of DJs has grown this semester. About half of the DJs are receiving credit as a part of their Media Studies degree. “We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores that are joining and that’s really exciting, it really is. For me, the last couple of years I’ve been a part of it, there has been time with a lot of empty spaces.

So, this year to see the calendar as full as it ever has been, people that are joining are not just taking one hour, they’re taking many hours,” says Sweeter. The radio studio is also filling up with students who are volunteering for fun without any class credit. “People realize it’s fun to DJ and do radio stuff like that. I think the online atmosphere makes it easier

too because there’s less pressure for people. If you make a mistake, it’s okay,” says Sweeter.

Students have access to thousands of songs in the studio's radio program.

DJs can also play music off of their laptop or phone. Many have even shared their show on social media to let others know when they are on the air.

Ethan Roggow is one of the DJs this semester. “I really enjoy it because it involves music and I really like music, that’s kind of my passion. I really enjoy sharing music with other people,” says Roggow. Radio DJs are welcome to play whatever style of music they want as long as the lyrics are family friendly. Roggow plays music during his show with his brother. “We grew up on Rock music so a lot of the stuff we play is rock. Sometimes we put in cool little playlists. Sometimes we’ll play some deep cuts, sometimes we play the classics. We try to have a variety but a lot of it is Rock,” says Roggow.

There are six residence halls located on campus, Burgess Hall, New Residence Hall, Grand Island Hall, Kroske Hall, Sullivan Faith and Living Center, and Collier Baker Hall.

Each hall has resident assistants (RA) on every floor.

There is a screening process for students wanting to become an RA at USF. “There is an IMPACT selection process so whether you want to be a resident assistant or a peer advisor or in student government everybody completes the same application and then has an individual interview with their areas of interest. RA’s are chosen on a number of categories, one is their skill at relating well with people, their ability to relate with a variety of different types of people, their teachability, their commitment to the university and our mission,” said Corey Ross, Vice President for Student Development/Dean of Students.

The RA’s hold a leadership position within the USF campus community.

Their position on campus is extremely

important. “We think RA’s are important for a lot of different reasons. One of them is first and foremost to build community.

This is a really important aspect of the residence life program. And the ability to create an engaging and exciting, a safe hospitable space is really important for us, for the students to thrive and to succeed academically. And so, they’re the front lines of the students that are right there making sure everybody’s taken care of, everybody’s safe, and that community is being built,” said Ross.

Josiah Abraham, an RA on the first floor of the men’s wing in the Sullivan Faith and Living Center said, “You get to choose between all of the RA’s in the building which nights to go around and we have to stay up until the inter-visitation hours to do rounds during that but the duties mainly consist of keeping all the residents safe and making sure everyone is doing alright and following the rules.”

ormer University of Sioux Falls offensive lineman Trey Pipkins is now a Los Angeles Charger. Pipkins was selected in the 3rd round during the NFL draft. All Conference, All Region, and All American were previous honors given to Pipkins during his college football career. These honors show the dominance he had across the NSIC as a top offensive lineman in the country. An Apple Valley, Minnesota native, Pipkins came to USF to play football. Pipkins spent five years at USF working on his craft and performing at a level no other USF offensive lineman has done before.

He gave up only two sacks in his 43 starts at USF. Also, in those 43 starts he had 234 total knockdowns. He became one of the most dominant offensive linemen the NSIC has ever seen. Pipkins ability to play landed him a spot at the NFL Combine, a

feat no other player from the University of Sioux Falls has done before. Pipkins was also the first player from the NSIC to get invited since Zach Moore from Concordia St. Paul in 2013. Moore now plays for the Arizona Cardinals. The NFL Combine is the first step to making it to the NFL. The combine consists of many different drills that show speed, agility and strength.

It Is a monumental event because you only get invited If you are the best of the best.

The combine usually consists of the players you watch on ESPN on Saturdays from big name D1 schools. Pipkins was one of five division 2 players to get invited to the combine. He went to the combine and made it known that he could hang with those guys. He posted great numbers for his drills. Pipkins is 6’7� and 300 pounds and posted a top five vertical jump and a top 5 broad jump at the combine. Pipkins athleticism is what caught the eye of NFL scouts across the league. With his size and moving as well as he does, it showed

scouts the potential in Pipkins. He showed enough to get him individual workouts with some NFL teams.

Pipkins was drafted by the Chargers with the 91st pick in the Draft. When he got the call that he was drafted he was on the way to dinner with his family. He went earlier than most expected which is huge for a small school guy like him. Pipkins was drafted before any other player in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Minnesota. He became the second USF player to get drafted and the first one since 1984. He also became the second player in two years to reach the NFL joining former USF linebacker Dennis Gardeck.

Gardeck signed a contract with the Arizona Cardinals and was a big factor in special teams throughout the year. Pipkins is on his way to becoming one of the best athletes to come out of the University of Sioux Falls, and if he can keep up his dominance, maybe he could become one of the best in the NFL.

he Winter weather has found a way to carry over into April making some Spring sports quite complicated.

The University of Sioux Falls baseball team started the season a little rocky, losing their first ten games of the season. When conference play began in the middle of March, the Cougars have found more success but have struggled to win consistently in a tough Northern Sun Conference.

The Cougar softball team started the season with four straight wins and are currently around an even record. The Cougars are just over an even record for the conference which could help them aim for a conference playoff spot in early May, in Rochester, Minnesota. Last season, the Cougars went three games deep into the NSIC Tournament but was eventually eliminated by Augustana.

The USF Outdoor track season has had a cold and chilly start to the season. As of the middle of April, the Men and Women’s teams have only competed in three meets and even had one cancelled.

The Men’s Golf team has had a very productive start to the Spring season. As of April 6, the Cougars had only participated in four golf matches but earned a 1st, 3rd, 4th and 9th place finish in those contests. April 18-April 20 the Men’s Golf NSIC Tournament was in Kansas City, Missouri. 10 teams participated in the tournament with the Cougars finishing 5th place. The Cougars were led by Brenden Bassing and JJ Cooney who placed 11th and 13th out of 50 golfers. It was a great showing to wrap-up the 2019 season.

The Women’s Golf team started strong with a 3rd place finish in Arizona to start the season.

The Cougars have slipped a little with an 11th and 10th place finish to their next two matches.

The Augustana Invite was cancelled making this

year’s season much abbreviated.

The USF football team kicked off the Spring Football season in early April. The Cougars are focusing on adding tempo to the offense and trying to catch the defense off guard.

The Cougars will have Gabriel Watson returning who was a DII MVP finalist last fall.

Quarterback Caden Walters is also returning for his Senior season.

“I can feel he is getting more comfortable with the offensive scheme and with his teammates,” Head Coach Jon Anderson says.

The Cougars also have returning players such as defensive end Logan Dykstra, safety Tucker Stout, linebackers Brody Grantham and Michael Enalls. The Cougars have 9 of 11 returning starters on the defensive side and should be very experienced this coming fall.

Coming off of an historical 2018 season, the Cougar Volleyball team will look to go even deeper in the postseason. Last fall, the Cougars earned a 20 win and 10 loss season losing in the NSIC Semifinals to Minnesota Duluth. The Cougars will lose four very talented Seniors including Makenna Rockeman, Lexi Scott, Bria Barfnecht and Megan Hamstad, but there is plenty of reason to be optimistic for the 2019 season. The Cougars return 5 players who had valuable playing time last season including last season’s sets leader Krista Goerger. Avery Yaksich had 298 kills last season and she’ll return this fall as well. While the Cougars do lose some players, they return a strong and experienced group for the 2019 fall season.

As you can see, USF athletics is having a successful 2019 spring season and looks to expand in that into the fall of 2019.

Now is a good time to be a Cougar fan!

How to get a

hether you are a high school student looking for a part time job, a college student interested in working in the media field, or just someone who wants a fascinating job, working at a television station might be for you. Production Assistant positions offer the chance to work with cameras, audio, a live newscast and lets anyone interested get their foot in the door.

Applying for a Production Assistant position offers a positive: there is little to no experience required. “You do not need experience to apply for a Production Assistant job at KDLT. We train everyone who is hired to do the specific jobs they are hired to do,” says Jeff Johnson, director at KDLT Television.

Production Assistant duties include, “manning the studio cameras during the local newscasts, meaning they move the camera to a specific point on the floor in the studio and framing a shot, zooming in and out, panning left and right, depending on what the director calls for,” says Johnson.

Production Assistants are not limited to just operating cameras. “KDLT also trains Production Assistants to do audio during the newscasts, and graphics using Photoshop and XPRESSION software,” says Johnson.

Grant Sweeter, a Senior Media Studies major at the University of Sioux Falls, started his career in media as a PA at KDLT. “I applied to KELOLAND in late January of 2018.

I didn't hear back from them so I applied to KDLT and got that job in February of 2018,” says Sweeter.

Before his PA job at KDLT Sweeter was working at a local grocery store, and although the job treated him well he was ready for a job in his degree field. “I needed to take that next step, and I wanted to begin building a resume,” says Sweeter.

Sweeter gained a lot of experience and knowledge while

working at KDLT. “They (KDLT) had a PA that ran cameras, they had a PA that ran graphics, they had a PA that was a floor manager, they had a PA that did audio, and they either had a live photog, or another floor manager.”

Sweeter spent three months as a PA at KDLT before another opportunity came up. “When KELOLAND called me in July, they told me to re-apply for the PA job.”

Sweeter ended up getting hired for that PA job at KELO-TV. Sweeter is not the only USF student that got a PA job at KELOLAND. Kullyn Meffert, a Senior Media Studies and English major has been a PA at KELO for the last five months. Like Sweeter, Meffert was ready to take that next step. “I was ready to find another job besides food service, the money was good but it wasn’t worth my happiness,” says Meffert.

“Being a Production Assistant gives you a good idea of what other jobs might be interesting in the company,” says Johnson. “I’ve been at KDLT for almost 27 years and I have seen many Production Assistants become Reporters, Anchors, Photographers, Engineers and Master Control Operators.”

Sweeter is one of those PA’s who advanced into a full time position. Sweeter credits his experiences as a PA for helping him get his current role as a Sports Reporter for KELOLAND. “It was a combination of the experience I got at KDLT, and devotion and care for the job I had at KELO as a PA. Both of those jobs beefed up my resume to prepare me for the sports reporter job,” says Sweeter.

Meffert credits what he has learned from his time in USF Media Studies for his success. “The best advice they could give is to be vocal and ask for help, don’t be afraid to learn something new,” says Meffert.

The advice Meffert gives is this: “don’t be afraid of taking that entry level position.

That is your foot in the door.” Meffert realizes that once you get your foot in the door the opportunities to get that full time job will be within reach. “I would like to move into reporting or sport reporting, maybe even photography,” says Meffert.

You do not need to be a media studies major to get a PA job. “I look back at the five people that I PA with at KDLT, and only one of them besides me wanted a career in news,” says Sweeter. However, if you do want to wedge your way into a career in media starting off as a PA is the

Although Sweeter and Meffert found their way in the door with a job as PAs, they are not the only USF students starting their media careers. Marissa Lute, a Senior Journalism major was recently hired as a Web Producer at KELOLAND. For Lute, working in journalism was not

a hard choice. “It's been a family thing for me, I’m a fifth generation journalist in my family,” says Lute. It all started when “my Great, Great, Great Grandpa owned a newspaper business.”

Lute spent the first two years attending Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Nebraska. “At Northeast I studied mass media, and that was strictly online, and that’s how I ran the newspaper.” Lute also took broadcasting classes at Northeast, got the chance to anchor, and was part of the Northeast team that won a Nebraska Skills USA gold medal in News Broadcasting.

After Lute graduated with an Associates degree she weighed her option on what to do next. “I could have gotten a job right then and there, but just knowing everything, and going on with my last two years for my Bachelors has helped a lot.”

A Web Producer job is a fairly new media job. “I will be putting content on their (KELOLAND) website, and putting stories on social media. That way when people see it on social media it will direct them back to the (KELOLAND) website. I will be writing content for the anchors, and reporters” says Lute.

Competition Outside of the Classroom— University of Sioux Falls Soccer Club

By Lauren LaFavre Inspiration to create a soccer club grew from the University of Sioux Falls past Olympic games event in the fall of 2018. Jett Thune, a junior and soccer-lover, thought a club was needed. There are a hidden handful of athletes and non-athletes whov are avid soccer lovers and not participating in collegiate soccer here on campus.

By Keith Grant The University of Sioux Falls (USF) hosts clubs to give students a chance to become involved and create relationships that will benefit them in the future. Each club on campus must participate in a service project to aid the surrounding community while following USF’s motto “Culture for Service”.

Investment Club includes many business majors, but includes students from the art department as well, giving the club a diverse output to become involved in different projects.

Steve Horan, an Assistant Professor in the Vucurevich School of Business, leads the team of students in investing the portfolio for a profit each year. Steve says he leads them because of his passion and desire to help students make smart decisions while investing in stocks.

Investment Club uses a portion of its profits each year to send an average of three students on a mission trip, rewarding them for their dedication to the club and giving them a chance to practice USF’s motto “Culture for Service”.

Clubs on Campus

Thune immediately got in contact with the head coordinator of student events, and the group was approved. Thune gathered a cluster of friends from USF and Augustana for the first couple sessions, but further growth started quickly once news of the club got out. Social media posts have been a huge part in gaining more members.

In the colder months, Soccer Club meets in the Stewart Center on campus, but once the temps pick up, they meet at the soccer field behind Bob Young Field. They try to meet twice a week, but recent scheduling conflicts only allows them one night a week. Sunday night sessions set a positive tone for the week to come.

Israel Miranda, a co-founder and consistent member of the club emphasized, “Everyone is here just to have a fun time. It is really one of my favorite days of the week.” Thune also says this night to be, “The highlight of my week”. “Sunday scaries” goes unmentioned when knowing that it is a soccer club night.

So if you are looking to get some fresh air and new friends, grab a pair of shoes and come on down to the soccer complex Sunday nights from 4-6:00pm. Soccer club is always looking for new members, and don’t forget to bring a friend!

“For three different years we sent people to the Caribbean, Dominican Republic, and Guatemala. This past year we sent three students over to Kenya as a part of the Simba Ministries,” says Horan. Mission Trips have not been the only way Investment Club has practiced “Culture for Service”, they have also partnered with Avera to help in a local way. “My freshman year we participated in a drive through Avera for toys for kids at the Avera Behavioral Health”, said Hannah Matzner, Investment Club President.

Improvidence Club has a Plan

By Morgan Holien On Monday nights loud, absurd dialogue can be heard from Jeschke's Jones Theatre. Entering the room will provide you with spontaneous entertainment. It is the Improvidence Club, a group of USF students past and present that gather to create laughter and community through unplanned, creative situations. And they've got quite the surprise up their sleeve.

"I was painting on one of my murals and it suddenly came to me: we need to go bigger.

We need to do more, we need to light people's minds on fire and take their souls and, just, blow their minds. And so, created this."

Drew Veurink, a Junior and co-president of the Improvidence Club explained how he got the idea for a new Improv event, coining the title "Improviganza". Usually, Improv does a public show once a month, however Veurink's love for improv and making people laugh sparked the ambition to have "the "biggest Improvidence show in USF history."

For more information about Improvidence club, feel free to go to a meeting Monday's at nine, or contact the co-presidents through their USF emails. Improviganza will be held May 6 at 9:00 p.m. Going to the show, held in Big Z, will include snacks, a chance to win an Amazon gift card, and lots of laughs. Posters are hung around campus and posted on social media by members of the club --including their Facebook Page (search "USF Improvidence")-- for day-today reminders. Furthermore, they ask that you wear some sort of sandal shoe--because they're going to knock your socks off!

Chess Club Becoming Most Popular Club on Campus

By Chloe Peterson A-5, B-2, checkmate. One of the newest and fastest growing clubs on the University of Sioux Falls campus, Chess Club has been an organization that has brought together many individuals from all sorts of majors, grades, and backgrounds.

Meeting every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. individuals from all levels of experience, come to play, socialize, and learn about the game of chess.

It doesn’t matter if one has played their whole life, or has never seen a chess board before, this club invites all to come and fall in love with the game.

Not even a year old, Chess Club has become one of the fastest growing clubs on campus ranging from 10-15 participants every Tuesday.

Because of the increase in participants, President and founder, Salvador Jaimes, recently bought new chess boards for the club allowing more people to play at the same time rather than having to wait for their turn. He says that it is exciting to see how many people share this similar passion with him and how it is a great time to meet and get to know new people.

Jaimes started this club in the fall of 2018 with a vision in mind. He says, “I started playing chess when I was a kid, and picked it up again this summer. I then thought about getting people together to play regularly. And so Chess Club came to be.” Jaimes was able to get Dr. Jackson to sponsor the club in the fall and appointed Mitchell Mund as Vice President.

Both Jaimes and Mund have enjoyed watching the club grow each week and see the diversity of people that attend each event. Though this may be just a club for fun, President Jaimes sees a future for the USF Chess Club competing in duels and competitions against other schools.

“It would be really cool and worthwhile to put our skills to the test and compete against other chess clubs from different Universities and learn from them,” says Jaimes who is looking to have a duel with the members of Augustana University’s Chess Club. No matter what ends up happening, Jaimes is proud to have started a club that has the potential of competing against other universities.

USF Ukulele Choir to Meet Regularly this Spring

By Greta Smith Spring is in the air and the students of USF's Ukulele Choir are more excited than ever to get out of the dorms and spend some time strumming away the semester. Members of the club are in the process of planning regular meeting times and choosing pieces to perform.

Members often meet in the Jeschke art gallery to talk about rehearsals, custom apparel, and performances.

Ukulele Choir was started last year by USF junior Dayne Versteeg. Though the group was started on a whim last spring, it is now in the process of being approved by Student Senate.

“We started it last year, a couple of us decided to get together and just play ukulele,” says Versteeg. “We all started playing the same song and we decided to make it into a ukulele choir.”

Versteeg is excited to bring the group back for another season and has ordered stickers and t-shirts for this year’s participants.

Interested in Ukulele Choir? No experience is necessary! Sophomore Hannah De-Hoogh Kliewer has no background with ukulele but says she is “looking forward to getting to know a fun group of people while learning a new skill.” Hannah and a handful of others will join the group’s growing membership this spring.

Rehearsals are dependent on the weather and subject to change, but are tentatively scheduled for afternoons on the campus quad. What's on the agenda? Choosing songs, playing, singing, and hanging out. Versteeg plans to keep the choir as “chill” possible and is arranging to partner with USF's hammocking club and have joint meetings as often as possible.

Versteeg says the best part of Ukulele Choir is “the relaxed feel you get from it” and encourages everyone with or without a ukulele to come play, sing, and join the community. The choir is looking forward to warmer temperatures and the relaxing sounds of the season!

The University of Sioux Falls has a new club on campus. Steven, a sophomore at USF started the Hacky-Sack Club during the Spring 2019 semester. To anyone unfamiliar with the sport of hacky-sack, it is a game with an objective of keeping a small sack full of material from touching the ground. There are few rules to hacky-sack, but perhaps the most important one is participants are able to use every part of their body besides their legs and hands. This makes the game very similar to a drill that soccer players practice called “juggling”. A player's most valuable attribute in the sport is their footwork. Hacky-Sack Club meets for the sole purpose of playing the sport they love and improving their craft.

The founder of the club, Steven says that before the club started, he would play with some of his teammates on the cross-country team. They realized it would be fun to get more people involved, and that was when he started the Hacky-Sack Club. Steven says one of his favorite parts about the club is the energy that each member brings, and all the laughs and good memories they make.

New member Maria, a freshman at USF, heard about the club through Steven because she is also on the cross-country team. Maria has a different story from Steven’s, she came into the club with little background in the sport of hacky-sack. Her dad tried to get her into the sport when she was younger, but she only recently found a genuine interest in it. Maria says that part of the reason she decided to join is because she enjoys trying new things. Maria says she really enjoys the people she has met through Hacky-Sack Club and has enjoyed all the new experiences she has made with her new friends.

Maria’s friend Breena is also a new member and says she was skeptical, but Maria finally convinced her to join. Breena said that her stipulation for joining was that she could leave after 15 minutes of every session. Nowadays she doesn’t even look at the clock and is sad when meetings are over.

Hacky-Sack club wants everyone to know they are welcome to join, as long as they follow the rules. Steven says that there are three rules. Rule number one: Bring new friends to Hacky-Sack Club. They have made it clear that this club is all about inclusion. Rule number two: no selfserves (an illegal maneuver in the sport, where

somebody serves the first hit to themselves virtuously revealing that they are selfish). Rule number three is: “always have a hacky-sack on you .“ Steven says this is important because they want any members to be able to HackySack at any moment of the day.
