Hello! My name is Baily Vis, and welcome to “The Streaming Spotlight”. Each month I’ll be giving an update on everything new streaming on Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video and more!

Whether it be movies, tv shows, or documentaries, there’s a chance you’ll find it here. But, for the first installment, I’ll be giving you my top 5 favorite things on Netflix just so that you can get an idea of my tastes and sensibilities. Now without further ado, let’s begin!

Three orphans on the run from an evil mastermind who wants to steal their family fortune. Yeah, that premise might sound a little stereotypical. However, when the show doesn’t take itself too seriously and throws in a bunch of over the top elements, it somehow manages to work. Don’t go into this expecting some high caliber show with a deep message, because that’s not what you’re going to get. Leave all of your expectations at the door because this show will either meet them or subvert them. You’ve been warned.

I absolutely love superhero shows.

So, when you have a guy who is a lawyer by day and a vigilante by night, I’m all in! This show deals with a lot of heavy issues like social commentary and religion. Please note that, due to some extreme violence and graphic imagery, viewer discretion is advised.

Christopher Nolan’s second Batman film is a masterpiece of the time and the genre. Released in 2008, “The Dark Knight” kicked off the modern-day superhero era, and it delivered a fresh take on Batman’s iconic nemesis, the Joker. Played

by Heath Ledger, many believe he should have gotten on Oscar for his portrayal of the villain. He did, but it unfortunately didn’t come until after the actor had passed away.

The Fast and the Furious

I’m a nerd. But I’m also a car guy.

So, this movie was like a sugar bomb to 8-year-old me. Sure, it’s cheesy.

It’s not deep whatsoever. It’s just a fun movie where you can sit down for two hours and turn your brain off. Now, “The Fast and The Furious” isn’t particularly good, but it spawned a franchise that’s been going for nearly 20 years. So, they must be doing something right.

Stranger Things

You’ve got the 80’s. You’ve got horror. You’ve got a group of naïve teenagers. You’ve even got a little “Dungeons and Dragons”. What’s not to love?! ‘Nuff said.

We hope everybody had a relaxing and maybe adventure-filled Christmas and Interim break! We sure did! Both Jessy and I were fortunate enough to join one of the groups who traveled abroad over J term, and we can’t wait to show you our pictures!

Over these next few months, we hope to show you more of your friends and peers.

Although it is our last semester of running The Vessel, we’re on a mission to make

EDUCATION IN THE STREETS OF

T

he University of Sioux Falls incorporates an interim break, or J term, into the academic calendar every year. During this time, students have the opportunity to fulfill a course requirement, travel or simply enjoy their vacation time.

As a Christian Liberal Arts university, USF firmly believes that intercultural experiences are fundamental in the development of wellrounded individuals.

Which is why in order to graduate from USF students are required to complete at least one course for their Intercultural Awareness requirement. One of the ways that students can fulfill this requirement is by diving into a more immersive experience, rather than sitting in a classroom like other traditional classes.

Over every J term break, USF offers a few different trips for students. A trip to Peru, South America taught students a mixture of Spanish and History; while a tour through Spain gave students an abundance of art history during the most recent break.

When I first heard about the art trip to Spain last fall, I jumped at the chance to sign up for my first trip abroad!

I wish I could show you all of the 750+ pictures I took over the course of the trip, but even if I could, they just don’t do the places justice. To really give anyone an insight of what this trip was like, I’d just tell you to book your flights now. But because that’s not exactly feasible for everyone, I’ll do my best to tell you about our adventures!

Our journey began in the Sioux Falls Regional Airport on January 10th, at 4AM. The rest of the day was spent in the Minneapolis and New York City airports, where we all got comfy and made makeshift beds on the floors.

After what seemed like days of traveling (but really it was just 25 hours), the nearly forty of us made it to Lisbon, Portugal where we met our tour guide for the rest of the trip, Enrica. We didn’t know it yet, but this was just the beginning of our memories with her.

She greeted us with her fun personality and chocolates, which we all greatly appreciated despite our sleep deprivation.

Our first 48 hours were spent exploring the city of Lisboa– as the locals say. This was just the beginning of countless pictures, a few new friendships, sweet pastries and breathtaking views. The 50º weather was a nice breath of fresh air, literally.

The next few days were spent travelling and exploring Seville, Spain. The Giralda Tower, Catedral de Sevilla, and Christopher

Columbus’ gravesite were just a few of our stops. That night, we were treated to a flamenco evening that inspired everyone to reevaluate their dance moves.

I should actually mention that there were a handful of students who took this trip for their Intercultural Awareness credit.

The online class opened up a week or so prior to departure, and the Associate Art Professor, Ceca Cooper assigned the first task– read the “Tales of the Alhambra” by Washington Irving.

This later came in handy during our next historic destination: Granada, Spain, where we toured La Alhambra. That night we stayed in Torremolinos, right next to the Mediterranean Sea. Which was BEAUTIFUL. The next “first” we experienced was traveling across the Strait of Gibraltar to Ceuta via ferry. The city of Ceuta forms the borderline between Spain and Morocco. Once we reached our final destination of Tétouan, Morocco we began a walking tour of the old part of the city, and then we were treated to an authentic lunch with entertainment.

The following day was spent traveling to Madrid via Talgo train. Our sightseeing tour

of Madrid included Calle Mayor, Gran Via, Cibeles Fountain, Royal Palace, and The Prado and Reina Sofia art museums.

By Day 10, we made it to Barcelona to see Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia and Park Güell.

Our final night was spent watching an FC Barcelona futbol (or soccer) game. And even though the majority of us had no idea what was going on, it was definitely a great ending to such an amazing trip!

Not one interim trip is like another. Sure, maybe the destination is something you have seen before, but what really makes the trip is the people you get to experience it with. I will forever tell my friends and family about this once in a lifetime opportunity, and I am pretty positive I’ll never get to see as much as I did and step foot in three different countries like I did in such a short amount of time.

I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given, and now I get to start my last semester of college ever with such

amazing memories and new friendships.

I feel as though it has given me a better outlook on life– I am thankful for what I have and who I am, and I know there is so much more to see in the world!

So my advice to you, dear reader, is travel.

Before you leave the campus of USF after graduation, take an interim trip. Traveling abroad has created an unforgettable amount of memories for every student who has ever participated in an interim trip. And hopefully, it will for you someday soon!
