The University of Sioux Falls is pleased to announce the hiring of its newest member of the Cougar family. Nathan Hofer, a graduate of the South Dakota State University applied for and accepted the position of “Assistant Director of Student Activities” at USF. What drew him in was something he couldn’t get at a typical State school. “Something centered around faith was really important to me,” said Hofer. “I just love the servant attitude of the people that are here.” Previously, Hofer had been employed at the University of South Dakota as the Assistant Director of Student Services for Programming. There, he organized events such as homecoming and concerts. His reason for leaving? Hofer wanted to get back into a small university like where he was before employment at USD. Hofer was the Director of Student Activities at Dakota Wesleyan University once out of college. He was drawn to the university because of its small atmosphere and Christian beliefs. While at USD, he missed those aspects and after hearing about the opening at USF, decided to apply.

“The intimacy that comes from a small campus where you get to know students and get invested in them is what I really missed,” said Hofer. Ashley Maturan, USF’s Assistant Director of Residence Life, was apart of the hiring process for the new activities director, and was impressed with Hofer from the start. “You can just tell he’s super passionate about what he does,” said Maturan. “He just brings life to anything he’s a part of and he’s doing a fantastic job.” One of Hofer’s newest ideas being brought to life is the start of a student led activities board. The purpose of the team will be to come up with and plan new activities for USF students to participate in throughout the school year. “It’ll be the Cougar activities board and we have a Facebook page, twitter account, and we’ll be utilizing YouTube, ” Hofer said. As far as his time at USF so far, Hofer is comfortable and fitting right in. “It’s been a real blessing so far,” said Hofer. “It already feels like home.”

This Year in Radio at USF It’s great to be back at USF this fall. Lots of cool things to check out, especially our beloved radio station, 94.5 KCFS. Now that I’m a senior, I’m looking forward to making my final year at the radio station the best year yet. This is also my second year as station manager, and I’m going to tell you about some of the shows you can expect this fall. I am pleased to announce that we have over a dozen DJs this semester, with a wide variety of shows to offer. Several students have shows where they take many requests in a given time period. Since we play everything, you can imagine the interesting choices of music our callers want to hear. In particular, one caller asks for Huey Lewis & The News every day, and that is no exaggeration. A new show called Donut Hippo features Kaitlynn Wornson, Ryan Howe, and myself, and it airs every Monday at 4 pm. We take people’s hypothetical questions that they ask on social media networks such as Facebook, Twitter and elsewhere, and we answer them live on air. We have an underground hip-hop show every Friday afternoon from Ileana Enid, who goes by DJ name ILLZ. This show has received a lot of positive feedback from fans of the genre, with many listeners tuning in and throwing in requests. In addition to our student-run shows, we have wonderful multi-cultural shows from our Spanish and Ethiopian broadcasters that also receive a lot of positive feedback and exposure from our community. The best part about getting to be a part of the radio station is playing music that you normally would not hear anywhere else. My motto is to “embrace the weird” so to speak. The beauty about this station is you can play Slipknot and Michael Bolton next to each other on a music block, and no one thinks twice about it. Finally, the radio station gives us a chance to reach out into the community beyond just the university. We talk about issues going on in our city, and each show brings a different discussion about our culture here in South Dakota. Whether we talk about news or play local music, we love to represent this great state in as many ways as we can. Thank you to everyone for listening to or being involved in this station, because without you, we would not be able to do what we do. Here’s to another great year!
