Fresh Beginnings for

College Monthly

Welcome to campus! This year will be an exciting year for all Cougars. It will bring a closing to the college experience for some, and open the door to a new life chapter for others. Your dedicated College Monthly staff will be here to fill you in on everything from the Homecoming football game and school dances to First Fridays downtown and your favorite boutiques and coffee shops. Kicking off the year with some new members on our team, Jaden Beukelman joins us as the Advisor after graduating from USF in 2014 and designed what is now known as College Monthly. Also new to our staff is Senior Natalie Miller working as our Advertising Manager. Bringing in all things pictorial is Senior Christin Vander Pol as Visual Editor. And returning as Content Editor is Junior Miranda Cain. We pride ourselves with being a student lead media source and invite you to participate with us in bringing news to campus and telling your story, your way. From all of us at College Monthly, we hope you have a great start to your year, and look forward to getting to know you!

SENATE NEWS. My name is Lauren Nelson and I’m the current President of Student Government. For many people this is a brand new experience, and for many more this is round two, three, four or maybe even five! To everyone who has been here before, seek out the freshmen. Let’s all make them feel welcome. To the freshmen: WELCOME! You are about to embark on what I hope is one of the best, most memorable journeys of your life. I would like to take a moment to tell you about an on-campus organization that I love: Student Senate.

What is Student Senate?

Get Involved!

Student Senate is a part of Student Government that is in place to represent the larger student body and address the questions, suggestions, concerns and ideas of USF Students. Every year there are significant decisions to be made on behalf of the student body, and it is amazing to be a part of the decisions that affect you and many other people! Each grade is represented in Student Senate, typically with five Senators per grade. But get this: the freshmen class gets six senator spots – two per freshman residence hall (Kroske, Grand Island, and Burgess).

Freshmen elections come quickly after the start of school. Be on the lookout for posters, handouts and emails about how and when to run for Student Senate! If you are a sophomore or above, elections for Senate already happened last spring, but do not let that stop you from setting up a time to visit a Senate meeting or sharing your ideas and thoughts with a Senator to pass along to Senate. Freshmen: DO NOT count yourself out at the thought of “running for office” – you would be surprised at how many people you will meet in the process of running for Student Senate, and who does not love some If you like being in a position of leadership, good ol’ fashioned campaigning? Every consider Student Senate. If you are an idea single person at USF has something to offer factory, always thinking of new ways of doing and ideas to give. YOU have valuable insight things, consider Student Senate. If you want to share with Student Senate! I guarantee to make a difference in the lives of your fellow it. If you have any additional questions, visit students and students to come, please, by all Student Development or pull myself or any means, consider Student Senate! You have current Student Senators aside and ask away. got nothing to lose, and so much to gain! This year is going to be great, folks. Prepare yourselves for awesomeness! Let your voice be heard! Sioux Falls art community flourishes Story and Photos by Kristine Reiner

Sioux Falls is a growing community, especially when it comes to the art world. If you have ever ventured downtown or taken a walk on campus, you have seen the well-known Sculpture Walk. This features works from all over the state and region. The sculptures are changed yearly to bring a fresh creative touch to our city. If you have not gone exploring downtown, the Sculpture Walk is a sight I strongly encourage you to check out. These sculptures are just one example of the beautiful art all around the city. The art scene in Sioux Falls is blossoming into something wonderful. This is thanks to local artists who dedicate a huge amount of time coordinating with other artists as well as business owners to showcase, promote and sell their art. As an artist it is not always easy to find places to show for free. Sioux Falls is different. We have so many local businesses that graciously help local artists have a more prominent role in our community. For instance, Black Sheep Coffee is always looking for people to show their creative side. This is just another perk of living in such a close-knit and wholesome community like Sioux Falls.

Anyone looking for some inspiration can visit many galleries in the downtown area to get an art fix. First Friday is a great way to go around town and see what artists are up to. Every first Friday of the month artists hold numerous receptions and display all sorts of works in Downtown Sioux Falls. One of the galleries that goes all out for this occasion is Exposure. They are located on 401 North Philips. It is a great place to see local art as well as hang your own works. Exposure is a welcoming place for artists because not only do they hang works, they also have studio rentals available.

Connected to Exposure is Jam Art & Supplies. Jess Miller had a vision of creating her own art reuse center here in Sioux Falls. She made that vision a reality over the past two years. Not only can you purchase cheap, donated art supplies, you can also take one of the art classes they offer for children and adults. Be sure not to miss the next First Friday— September 4th.

CONNECTING FOR LIFE President’s Welcome

Welcome to the University’s 132nd year! We have been hard at work planning new programs, activities and special events for you. But more importantly, we have been praying for your arrival and improving our campus to enhance your experience. The theme for student development is ‘Connecting for Life.’ This theme reinforces the belief that many of you will develop strong friendships and meaningful relationships that will bring you a lifetime of joy and encouragement. The connections that you will make within the USF campus community will make you stronger and more prepared for the day when you walk across the stage to receive your diploma. Throughout the 2015-16 academic year, faculty, staff and students will be developing a well-being initiative that we are calling USF360. The initiative was named by students who participated in a focus group this summer. USF360 is not limited to health and physical wellness; it is about developing the

whole person in every area of life—all 360°—as part of our commitment to adding value to your higher education experience. While USF professors are experts in teaching content, each and every employee at USF is committed to helping you build on that academic content, knowledge and skills to prepare you for success in all aspects of life-spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical, social and financial. The key ingredients are in place for a great year in the life of the University of Sioux Falls. As you begin this academic year, I want to encourage you to be intentional in grasping all that USF has to offer—from our rigorous academic programs and outstanding faculty and staff who desire to get to know you personally, to the meaningful connections that you are sure to make with friends and colleagues that will enrich your life. Blessings for a great year, Mark Benedetto President

Bringing the Beat Back Story by Ben Gertner

As a musician in Sioux Falls, I grew up trying to find places to play the songs I wrote, as well as get inspiration from other local artists. Until recently, it was difficult for artists like me to find accommodating avenues for our music. Today, the opportunity to experience music in Sioux Falls is much more open to all ages. One of these places is a local record shop called Total Drag. Total Drag is a place where people of all ages can both participate in and experience the music scene. Locally owned by Dan and Liz Nissen, Total Drag is a shop that sells records, tapes and books of both local and national bands. Dan and Liz are supportive of the music scene and care a lot about the people involved in it. “We’re just doing it completely different than any other venues usually do it,” says Dan Nissen. “Like, we never take any door money from any of the shows. All the door money paid by the people, the attendees of the shows, goes to the bands every single time.” There are many other venues in town to experience music such as The District, the Denny Sanford Premier Center, and Latitude 44. Whether you’re looking to be involved in the music scene or just experience it, there is something for everyone in Sioux Falls. Nissen describes the mucic scene as an extremely welcoming, tight-knit community of people.

Watch for shows from USF musicians such as Stringed Soul, Remember to Breathe, and The Disarmed! 14 | COLLEGE MONTHLY
