A Message from the Dean On behalf of the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, I am pleased to congratulate the members of the class of 2024.

To the family and friends of the graduates: I would like to give a special acknowledgement to you for your support during these challenging, but rewarding, years. Today, I hope you will relish the shared feeling of pride in what your graduate has accomplished and in the abundant opportunities ahead.

To the graduates: As you receive the degree you have worked so hard to earn, remember that you are a driver of change and innovation. Whether you are now a new pharmacist, pharmacologist or pharmaceutical scientist, health economist or regulatory expert, you are entering the healthcare continuum with the potential to save lives and improve the human condition. We are counting on you and the change you will bring to our world.

In the years to come, I encourage you to remain close with your former professors and fellow Trojans. We will take great pride in your achievements throughout your career, and you are forever a member of the Trojan family.

The 117th Commencement Address

Sean Penn Actor, filmmaker and philanthropist

Academy Award-winning actor, filmmaker and philanthropist Sean Penn will deliver the keynote address at the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences 117th Commecement.

In addition to Penn’s world-renowned acting and directing career spanning 50+ films — including Oscar-winning roles in Mystic River (2003) and Milk (2008) — he is also the co-founder and chairman of the global humanitarian nonprofit organization CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort).

Driven by an ethical imperative to save lives and aid vulnerable communities, Penn originated CORE to distribute aid in Haiti following the country’s devastating 2010 earthquake. More recently, CORE partnered with USC Mann and Los Angeles agencies to operate the country’s largest COVID-19 testing and vaccine distribution mega-site at Dodger Stadium.

Currently, CORE is providing vital humanitarian relief to those in need amid the dire crisis in Ukraine, Haiti, Sudan and beyond, while also continuing impactful programs in the United States that focus on emergency response and preparedness, addressing climate change and health access.
