A Message from the Dean On behalf of the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, I am pleased to congratulate the members of the class of 2023.

Today is a historic day. You are each a member of the first class to graduate from our 118-year-old school with its new name.

Today is also unique as we gather for Commencement at the USC University Park Campus for the first time in many years.

To the family and friends of the graduates: I would like to give a special acknowledgement to you for your support during these challenging, but rewarding, years. Today, I hope you will relish the shared feeling of pride in what your graduate has accomplished and in the abundant opportunities ahead.

To the graduates: As you receive the degree you have worked so hard to earn, remember that you are a driver of change and innovation. Whether you are now a new pharmacist, pharmacologist or pharmaceutical scientist, health economist or regulatory expert, you are entering the healthcare continuum with the potential to save lives and improve the human condition. We are counting on you and the change you will bring to our world.

In the years to come, I encourage you to remain close with your former professors and fellow Trojans. We will take great pride in your achievements throughout your career, and you are forever a member of the Trojan family.

The 116th Commencement Address

Janet Wright, MD, FACC Director of the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Janet Wright, MD, FACC, Director of the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will deliver the 116th Commencement Address.

Wright was appointed director in the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention in July 2021, after returning to CDC from a two-year detail in the Office of the Surgeon General as the acting Director of Science and Policy.

From 2011 to 2019, Wright served as executive director of Million Hearts®, a national initiative co-led by the CDC and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes in the U.S. within five years. In the first five-year phase, an estimated 500,000 cardiovascular events were prevented through the efforts in all 50 states and D.C. and over 125 public and private partners.

Prior to federal service, Wright served as Senior Vice President for Science and Quality at the American College of Cardiology from 2008 to 2011, and practiced cardiology for many years in Chico, California.
