CELEBRATING 70 YEARS BUILDING A FOUNDATION In 1957, the University of South Carolina Department of Nursing transitioned to a four-year program with support from university leadership. The School of Nursing was established as an autonomous educational unit, becoming the 10th such school at USC. Amy E. Viglione was appointed as the first dean. Located in the McCutchen House, the first class for the new BSN program consisted of 37 students. Under Dean Viglione’s leadership, the school focused on student support efforts through privately funded scholarships, renewable clinical facility contracts, and qualified faculty appointments.

Beginning in spring 2027, USC Nursing will commemorate its 70th anniversary by incorporating special recognitions and storytelling into existing college events and initiatives throughout the year. The milestone celebration will honor the college’s legacy of leadership, education and service while highlighting the impact of its alumni, faculty, students and partners across South Carolina and beyond. The anniversary will also coincide with the University of South Carolina’s 225th anniversary celebration, connecting USC Nursing’s history and future to the broader legacy of the university.
